Mario Chat / Re: This oughta leave a kid scarred for life....

Oh, Shintoism doesn't have anything to do with yaoi or yuri, I wasn't trying to imply that it did.  I mentioned it because V . . . erm, I forget how to spell the name (heh), but that person said that Shintoists don't believe that homosexuality is wrong.  Whether or not that's true, and I don't know enough about the religion to say, I was pointing out that despite that (and other factors that would indicate more tolerance, such as yaoi and yuri) a lot of people over there still view homosexuality as a sick thing, and homosexuals meet with a lot of prejudice.

"But I'm pretty sure gays choose to be gay."

Why would anyone choose to be ostracized, made fun of, threatened, unable to enjoy the same legal rights as heterosexuals, and have their dating pool restricted to like 10% of the population?

"If the people choose to be gay, that's fine, they choose to."

We don't.  But thank you anyway.

I respect everyone's religious beliefs and it's okay to not agree with homosexuality, but I hope everyone in this topic will extend those who disagree with THEM the same respect.

From everything I've heard, even though there's more queer exposure in the media in Japan--games and anime and such--when it comes to actually living there, they are perhaps even more intolerant of gays than Americans.  I knew a ******* who had lived with a family in Japan for 2-3 years and had seen gays treated horribly during her time there, and was terrified to let anyone know about her orientation.  So despite yaoi and yuri and Shintoism, there's prejudice everywhere.

Oh, and about Vivian saying "sisters," notice that after he says that he oldest sister calls him an idiot and corrects him.  I think the implication was that he WANTED Mario to think they really were all sisters when they're actually two sisters and a brother.

ETA:  Did that word SERIOUSLY just get bleeped?  Oh no everyone, better watch out what you type, TEH GAYE might be spreading!

Heh, come on now.  It's so cheating to put SMAS+SMW.  That's five games!  One CARTRIDGE, but still five games.  Of course the creator of the thread did set a precedent, so . . .

Old School:  Um, I think SMW.  I loved it and it took me years to find everything.  Runners-up would be YI and SMRPG though.

New School:  SM64--see SMW.  I need to play through that one again.  Runners-up would be both Paper Marios.

Pocket Power:  I dislike handheld systems, but I suppose M&L:SS.

Favorite of all of them:  Gah, that's too hard!  SM64, I think.  I'm still waiting for them to come out with another one that's that good.

Heh, sorry.  I didn't think that was a spoiler, since you can tell about . . . that person from the very beginning of the game (and even on the box art, if I'm remembering correctly).  I didn't consider it to be a "secret" character.

Yeah, if the mic's unplugged then it's automatically set to "off."  You have to go in and change it to "use controller" yourself, or plug it in.

I like MP6 so far, but I only got it a few days ago (i.e. Christmas).  MP4 is awful--it's the only one of the series I don't own.  (My mother and I are addicts.)

It amuses me that Toadette has a lower voice than Toad does.

Mario Chat / Re: Magnetic Super Mario Bros. Figure Dioramas
« on: December 18, 2004, 01:26:52 AM »
Ohh, that's how you do it!  I saw those at my local anime store (wizzywig.com) and picked one up--not the dioramas but the single magnet kind.  I got the fire Luigi (you can't tell which you're going to get when you buy it), but I've had a hell of a time trying to figure out how to stick it places, because it comes with this weird yellow block thing with a tiny metal disc embedded in it.  Not only that, but the magnet comes out of Luigi and I'm not sure if it's supposed to or not.  Maybe mine was broken.

Right now it's very precariously stuck to my fridge.

Aww, I like the koopa kids in the Mario Party games.  I love that level in, I think it's MP3, where you're on the Bowser festival board and they stop the game to have their parade and then you lose coins.  Well, not the losing coins part.  And no, Koopa Kids /= Koopalings /= Baby Bowser /= Bowser Jr.  Four different entities.  Or, well, 12 different entities, I guess.

Ironically, I dislike Mario and Luigi.  I play the games for the minor characters and the enemies, heh.

Man, lots of fave character posts up now.  (Hello fellow Chain Chomp!)

I do best with DK.  If I'm just messing around with friends, though, I'll use Young Link and put him in his white outfit and call him The Jailbait.  WHAT?

I don't think I saw Jr. Troopa . . . of course, now that finals are over, I can go play it obsessively some more.

I wasn't very attached to any of the partners in PM1, which is part of why I thought PM2 was better.  I like Bobbery, and Vivian and Koops.

I missed Kolorado though.  At least he got a shout-out or two.

The Pit was probably my favorite part of TTYD actually, at least the second half of it.  If you're leveled up enough, the first half is very boring, because it's not at all challenging and you never get more than one star point (in fact I don't think I started getting more than one until about the 65th "floor" because Mario was at level 30-something when I beat it).

Oh dude, the most star points I ever got on one battle was 81.  I was fighting some, uh, crap.  I can't remember what kind of enemy it was, but it was one of the kinds that can make more of itself--I think it was a group of Fuzzies actually.  I got down to two Fuzzies and both of them refused to attack me, but would instead create more of themselves.  Then I'd kill the two new Fuzzies, and then the original two Fuzzies would just make more!  I could have ended the battle with an item or special move, but since they weren't attacking me anyway, I decided to get some star points out of it.  After about 15 minutes I had killed something like 40 fuzzies, and finally they stopped calling new ones and started attacking me.  THEN, after I ended the battle, Merlee's curse took effect and doubled my star points.  81 star points for a battle that I only took about 3 points of damage on.

Tattle's got a Stylish?  Hee!  How do you do it?

Is his name different in different games?  My ghost was Doopliss too.  After I learned his name, I got stuck, because when he would ask me to guess and I'd enter it he would always tell me I was wrong.  It turned out I had copied it down wrong (Dooplis).  Bah!

Heh, TEC in general kinda creeped me out.  I thought he was going to go all HAL on Peach there.  "I can feel it, Dave . . . I can feel it . . . "

My scariest Mario moment is near the end of PM:TTYD too, so I won't go into it yet.

YES POSSIBLE SPOILERS UH OH

I finally beat the Pit of 100 Trials last night.  Man, I've never played a more nerve-wracking "level" in a game, heh.  The first time I attempted to get all the way to the bottom, I made it to level 89 and then died because one of my enemies attacked me twice.  If I had survived that one turn I would have been fine.  And of course in the Pit you can't save at all, so I lost everything I'd managed to win on the way down--a few badges, a level and like 600 coins.  Ouch.

When I beat it last night I had two really close calls.  Once I died on like level 94, but had forgotten I had a Life Shroom--phew.  Then on something like level 98, my whole game depended on me pulling off one of Koops's Stylish commands.  If I did the move, I'd gain enough star power to use Sweet Feast and save Mario (he was down to about 3 HP and I had no items or FP left), and then after I finished that battle I would get the single star point I needed to level up and everything would be refilled for my last fight.  If I missed the command I'd be killed on my next turn, one level away from the boss.  I managed to pull it off though, and I beat the Pit.  Yay!

(Koops's shell attacks are the only ones I've noticed where you can actually pull off more than one Stylish command in a single attack.  Can all the characters do that?  I really need to buy the Timing Tutor.)

*pointedly doesn't spoil Super Mario, heh*  But yes, there are just enough Shine Sprites.

Anyway, yes, spoilers for end of game ahead, highlight to read.

After you beat the Shadow Queen, if you go back to that same save file, you'll head back to Rogueport and meet Goombella there.  The Shadow Queen is still dead and everyone congratulates you, but you can continue to play the game and look for stuff you might have missed.  There were a few things I thought were odd about the end of the game that made me wonder whether I was really done:

1.  Bowser isn't mentioned in Goombella's end-credits roundup of what happened to everyone.  Even Grodus gets a semi-happy ending, but we never find out what happened to Bowser and Kammy.  Weird for a playable character to not get an ending sequence.

2.  The final issue of the RDM e-mail newsletter signs off with "We hope to see you again soon" followed by " . . . maybe sooner than you think, wink wink."  Um, okay?

3.  A Goomba chilling in the city underneath Rogueport tells you that you're now in the penultimate chapter of your adventure.

4.  Merluvlee's price to see my "future path" keeps going up.  When I ask her to read my fortune, she says to take care of stuff I need to do in Rogueport "first" and then gives my money back.

5.  Luigi's friend Screamy, who said he had a message to deliver and whom Goombella couldn't tell you anything about.  I find it weird that they'd design a completely new Marioverse species for one cameo character who never gets mentioned again.

Anyway, it's just idle speculation, heh.  Last night I beat the Pit of 100 Trials, finished all the troubles, and finally powered up all my characters, and it's not like anything happened then, so the game probably really is over.  But they definitely throw stuff in there to make you wonder about it, eh?

Hey Fifth, how do I do the spoiler text?  BB code?  I'd like to give some reasons why I'm not sure that's actually the end of the game, but yeah, pretty major spoilers.
