I don't think so.
I'm now in a middle of a manga project. I don't think i start another now.
I want to draw as good as "Legendary" Toasty 64.

I partially agree with Todd, although I do like the general art style and such very much. I don't hold Toasty's work in very high esteem, though, I must say.

Speaking of Toasty, why haven't you put up Mario's High School Days Super Turbo yet?

Anyway, no, Todd, all anime is different. Sure, a lot of it is action-like, but most have actual plot lines, and are linear, unlike most American cartoons like The Simpsons. Each episode takes place just after where the last one ended.

I just want to learn how to draw in ANY style, personally.

If I had any drawing abilities, I'd be pretty happy.

The best I could draw would be a stick figure.

Assuming Manga is the style that Toasty64 draws in, then I guess it looks cool, but it can't be that stylish if everybody draws the same way.  I can draw like that, but I prefer my own style.  And I just want people to know that drawing well shouldn't matter, as long as you can draw what you want to, because I drew on one of the dividers on my binder a stick figure in a dance position with an umbrella while cheese fell from the sky and I wrote "IT'S RAINING CHEESE!!!" on the top, and people that have seen that think I can't draw and that all my pictures are "retarded" because of that one picture.  But you know what?  I wanted to draw that, so the hell with them and what they think about me!  I'll draw whatever I want, thank you, and if it happens to be cheese falling from the sky, then by goodness, let it be!

...Anyway, drawing is a way I express myself, or at least get out of being bored, and you don't have to draw well to enjoy it.  I suppose you could get better by tracing stuff and then sketching stuff and then making stuff into your own creation by tweaking it a lot, but whatever, I just like to draw my own way.

Toasty draws very strange manga, if you can even call it that.

I meant in general, all anime is the same.  I don't usually watch it and i know the plots are different, but just channel surfing at different times, some channels get the anime shows and they all look the same, and they're all generally about the same thing: some kind of little monsters/small animals (i don't know either but I don't find it very impactful)

I don't think Toasty 64 draws strange Manga.
Anyway: As the Manga section started, I think that i could draw some Mario Manga.

I've seen that before (MHSDST, not the Freaky Show).  Toasty hasn't updated MHSD for a looooong time.  I like his stories but I get annoyed that Mario and Luigi can usually beat the enemies in one hit (just like a certain blue hedgehog on TV) and that Donkey Kong is no where to be found when he's a fairly popular character, but his friends are there.  I do think that Toasty's art is a little strange.  The way he draws Peach makes her look like an old lady, and I saw this one Mario comic he drew where Mario pulled out a huge vegetable from the ground and got crushed violently (ew).  Other than that, his art is okay.  And yeah, why don't we update Super Turbo already?!?!

I agree with that Peach thing. She really looks like an old lady.
Well. I don't want to be exactly like Toasty, But i'm sure that if i weren't read his comics and looked at his pictures, I'm sure that i've never gone this far in Manga drawing.

Oh yeah, and that too.  I kind of started to wonder about that when Fox and Falco in MHSD acted so strangely around each other all the time.  I was like, "hmmmm, I hope that's not what I think it is" and then a few chapters later "Ack!  That's so gross!  I think I'm gonna puke!"  But I won't say anything because who knows what kind of people come here?  I don't want to start an ugly war.  But mariofan7 probably didn't mean that.

So did you learn manga from those japanese How to Draw Manga books or somewhere else?

I have two things to say:
1)You don't have to be good at drawing to be able to create "manga," or for the sake of simplicity, "comics".  I draw comics all the time, but none of them are publishing-worthy, by no means.
2)I never really was a fan of Toasty64's work.  I always imagined Mario as more comical in appearence.  For example, the Mario in SSBM has a moderately human appearence, but it'd still be wierd to see someone like that walking around in real life.  I guess that what I don't like about his work is the "anime-feel" that comes with it.  I guess.

In conclusion, I had nothing to say.

....So....what's wrong with that?

You could say that his works are a tad 'influenced'...

I have a certain reason to believe that Toasty does yaoi somewhere...

Or was it shounen-ai?

Jesus, you people are all uniformed retards. Running around everywhere screaming fallacies while wallowing in your own ignorance. By everyone, I mean Mr. Beats Without lyrics. Apparently, without a real brain as well. It's amazing to me how someone can judge such a vast amount of animation and comics by a few poorly imported shows seen while channel surfing. Anime and manga is such a vast genre (if I dare use such a limiting word such as genre on it) Some are very good, some very bad, some mature, some immature, on all different kinds of subjects. Sci-fi, historical, fantasy, reality. Contrary to his belief, not all anime are about small monsters. Most, infact, completely lack small monsters. Perhaps even large monsters. Or medium monsters. But I am rambling. The range is probably greater than that of American cartoons. I also find the quality and the entertainment value to be higher then most American cartoons.  While I'm on the subject, recent American cartoons are ****. I want my Freakazoid and Inspector Gadget.

Someone was talking about yaoi and shounen-ai. Shounen-ai is more.. uh.. mushy than Yaoi I guess. I'm not exactly an expert on this.

Also, it's impossible to draw Mario "manga" style. Why? Because he's already "manga" style. I really don't feel like going into detail here, and the webmaster of this site does a spectactular job explaining what anime and manga is. Too bad NONE OF YOU WILL EVER READ IT ARGHHH *EXPLODE* http://stuff.mit.edu/people/rei/Expl.html

This would be a lot easier on me if I could just reach through my monitor and stab beatswithoutlyrics in the face. But my knife might get stuck... I guess that's probably bound to happen now and then, but I'm afraid I might bend the tip a little, and the blade will never be quite as sharp again (quite as sharp again)

"Within this broad common stylistic ground, each manga artist's technique is distinct and unique. The stereotype is of characters with huge hair and large eyes, but there are many, many variations..."

This is what I was trying to point out (or at least this is what I believe): You don't need to know how to draw in this stereotypical style.  In fact, you don't even really have to be able to draw.  You could draw two sick figures having a out-of-the-ordinary dialogue and still call it "manga."  Whether it's good or bad (or even valid) is up to the reader.

Well put, Mad.

"You could say that his works are a tad 'influenced'...

Or was it shounen-ai?"

...Once again, I say, so? What is wrong with that? People can enjoy yaoi/shounen-ai. It's not a crime...

Okay...

Maybe I'm a tad discriminative against homosexuality, but I have nothing against homosexuals...
I'm not gonna discuss it any further in this thread...

But I still like Toasty's works - I really do!

Of course, I have also reason to believe that Toasty is taking Dutch law...

Hoo-boy! A European lawyer who is also a big Super Mario fan!? Where is this world coming to?

Title: Re: Manga!
Post by: Hope(N Forever) on December 05, 2004, 12:24:54 PM
It's a lot worse than that, Markio...

Yaoi is a type of Hentai (Japanese toon/anime pornography) which is usually made for girls' sexual pleasure...

Why girls? Because due to the fact yaoi is more of a male x male bonding (gay sex)...

In case you're interested, the opposite of yaoi is called yuri (female x female - made for boys' sexual pleasure)...

As for shounen-ai (and its opposite - shoujo-ai), it is related to yaoi (and yuri respectively), but it's a lot more milder (bonding without sexuality)...
