What is this so-called "box"?
Perhaps this explorer is, in fact, Snake, and is trying to get one last box before he finally dies from how Konami is treating him.

Obviously being able to throw the hammer, climb up a ladder, then catch the hammer again in Donkey Kong for Game Boy was inspired by this box art.

Little did we realize, Mario and Mr. Do were the same person (http://www.atarimania.com/pubs/hi_res/pub_mr_do_castle.jpg) all along.
