Title: The most annoying level
Post by: Alisbet on October 09, 2010, 12:54:13 AM
What is the most annoying level that you have ever encountered in a video game? That is the question of this topic.

Gradius III (arcade), cube rush. This is objectively the most annoying stage ever, and anything else is included as a formality.

Shikigami no Shiro II, stage three. God[darn]ed walls.

If this was a bigger forum, someone would probably say Meat Circus.

Every level in MapleStory. HEYOOOOOOOO

As a kid I would have probably picked one from SMBj/LL, but I can't recall what level it was now.  Most recently NSMB 9-7 was annoying, but having the monkey having you jump/bounce on stuff was most annoying.  As for non-Mario games, I'll have to think about it and get back to you.

I'll agree that NSMBW 9-7 was awful.

I'm not sure what else...  Perhaps the final three or so chapters of Uncharted 2, which contain the hardest gunfights in the game.  Any given gimmick/vehicle level in Crash Bandicoot: Warped (except the N. Gin boss fight, which was awesome).

Yeah, in Uncharted 2, I remember that one part where you're in the entryway to the temple area, picking off guys with a Dragon Sniper in a bunch of different towers, was a major pain. And yes, the Meat Circus did hand my ass to me, although I'm not sure why this would need to be a bigger forum for someone to say that.

While not a level per se, Jabu-Jabu's Belly from LoZ:OoT provided me with four hours of hell.

The mall meetup in Mirror's Edge was quite annoying. On the escape, getting to the platform at the top without getting cut to shreds was crazy hard. The Sonic Adventure 2 Rouge level with he vaults was also annoying.

I was also very bothered by Jabu Jabu, for some reason. I suspect that even as an adult I would curse the eyes of the Water Temple's architect.

In Metal Gear Solid 3, Groznyj Grad on European Extreme is a huge pain in the ass.

I am still stuck on that part where you go through a rising door, go up onto a catwalk, and take out some guards.

Oh, just remembered: That part on the way to Nova Prospect in Half-Life 2, where you have the Ant Lions and are in shoot-out with those giant ships? Yeah, could someone please help me out there? That part alone is preventing me from ever wanting to play that game again.

Jabu Jabu's Belly and the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time are nothing compared to Jabu Jabu's Belly in Oracle of Ages. That said, Jabu Jabu's Belly and the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time are actually cakewalks.

What is it with NSMB9-7?  That level wasn't really all that bad.  That last Star Coin in 9-4, however, was horrendously annoying to get.  As for me, some particular memories are SMB2j/TLL's C-4, SMW's Tubular, SMG2's second crate-burning objective, and the final boss from Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure.

The Spider Ball Guardian. Dear God, the Spider Ball Guardian.

I guess because I played Trilogy edition and had access to such luxuries as the Spring Ball and reasonable damage output levels on its part, Spider Guardian never posed a threat to me.  Boosty was still murder, though.

I agree with Water Temple and the FLUDD-less parts of Super Mario Sunshine (I once drew a bad-looking comic about one of those FLUDD-less challenges, so it's pretty high on the annoy-o-meter). It'd be tough for me to pinpoint the -most- annoying level I've ever faced in a game, but I'll nominate any of the Story Mode challenges from F-Zero GX.

Oh yes, how could I overlook SMS? I'm in the middle of my first real playthrough, and I've already had my fill of those annoying challenges.  Oddly enough, the second one in Bianco Hills easily took me thrice the time and lives of the one(s?) in Pinna Park.

To me, water levels are not horrible, but I always find it really annoying. So when Super Mario Sunshine came out I think Nintendo just told me to screw myself.

But then I actually did like Sunshine.

As far as SMB3 goes, I suppose I should mention World 8.  Like, the whole thing, but especially 8-2.  I hadn't gotten a single Game Over until World 8.  Then I couldn't beat it no matter what I did.  Took me forever to finally get past it.

I think you people just don't play enough video games. SolidShroom's mention of Shattered Soldier is the only thing mentioned that comes close to the Gradius III cube rush.

How about, I dunno, fighting Jedah in Vampire Savior? Medicine Melancholy in Phantasmagoria of Flower View? Dust of Osiris in Melty Blood: Actress Again? Anyone in Twinkle Star Sprites?

STAR FOX ADVENTURES TEST OF FEAR

What about the Lightfoot strength test? I'm ashamed to say that I got my father to do that for me. I guess it's not too difficult now because I've learned how to mash the button rapidly by vibrating my finger. Which reminds me, the Solidus choke scene on European Extreme in Metal Gear Solid 2 just about killed me (it's many times harder than the Lightfoot test). The rest of the game is mere peanuts compared to that part.

The most annoying part of Mega Man Battle Network 3 was when you were stuck in Mega Man Mode, I don't remember what it's called, and you can't jack out.

OH GOD THIS

GBA + Mega Man spinoff + third game in that spinoff series + best game in that spinoff series by a long shot. People having played it is definitely feasible.

The only qualification those games get as "spinoffs" is that they have "Mega Man" in the title.

What about the Lightfoot strength test?
AUGGH THAT ONE TOO. Actually, I was going to mention the Test of Strength along with the Test of Fear, as it nearly reduced me to tears as a kid, but at least I eventually managed to--as you said--oscilliate my thumb to the point where I was able to succeed. Meanwhile, practice is practice, but it took a lot more than that to get through the Rare equivalent of that Darth Vader hallucination in Star Wars.

I thought it was gorgeous and it had an amazing soundtrack also. The combat was for the most part a total joke, but that was okay. It was still pretty. And Fox's controls were really fun. He had weight onscreen. It felt real to move him around.
Title: Re: The most annoying level
Post by: ShadowBrain on October 20, 2010, 07:37:22 AM
Yeah, I agree. I mean, looking back, it definitely suffered from your standard Rare vices (bad voice acting, fetch quests, excessive collecting, randomly balls-hard challenges, and undeniable structural similarities to a popular Nintendo series), but having never played the previous Star Fox games as a kid, I thought it was pretty cool. The concept, though, was... well, I know it's because it wasn't originally an SF game, but I get the feeling it would've been awesomer as some kid's CG movie (hey, that reminds me--whatever happened to that Dinotopia thing?).

Oh, and Krystal. ShadowBrain approves.

Oh, and Krystal. ShadowBrain approves.

PaperLuigi disapproves. She was the most annoying aspect of the game.

Back on topic, did anyone else hate the triforce collecting part in LoZ: The Wind Waker? I guess it wasn't difficult, just tedious (and therefore annoying).
Title: Re: The most annoying level
Post by: Chupperson Weird on October 20, 2010, 11:48:16 AM
Odama is awesome and sometime I need to get around to finishing it. I constantly talk it up to customers who see the two copies we have in the case.

SFA didn't really have that bad of acting. I guess Slippy and Peppy were a bit off, but Fox and Krystal were fine. Fox's voice was especially kickin' and I wish they could have kept Steve Malpass around to do it. But he was Rare. sigh

Very true. It seriously diminished the game's replay value as well.
Title: Re: The most annoying level

I would've preferred their original plan of having like, twice as many dungeons as what actually ended up in the game, before they were screwed by deadlines.

Triforce collection was tolerable, but if you're nitpicky about 100% completion, like me, you'll know how much of a pain it is to complete the map, the sea charts, and especially the Pictographs.

SFA didn't really have that bad of acting.

I actually really, really liked Fox's voice. And Tricky's voice fit him quite well, although he was a tad annoying at times.

Also, Mega Man Powered Up featured some of the most aggravating challenges. 100 in all. I'm not stupid enough to throw my equipment, but boy oh boy did I feel like breaking my PSP in two sometimes.

Oh, the voices matched the characters just fine--it's the quality of the acting (and those accents...) that was, at times, seriously lacking. But hey, it's not like it was set up to be the most epic game ever.

Let's see:

15. Nope. Poor programming doesn't warrant a spot on a "most annoying games" list.
14. Already discussed, and really not that bad.
13. I've not played it myself, but...what the hell? With their justification for it, you could replace it with pretty much any stealth level in any non-stealth-based game.
12. Nope. (Fun fact: there are a couple of weapon combinations that quite easily let you cheese your way through the original Gunstar Heroes. Gunstar Super Heroes is a far harder game.)
11. Again, the justification here is what kills it; in this case, the writer is a complete ***** and is so reliant on modern features that he can't play a game designed around not having those features.
10. ...What?
9. Nope. In reality, Contra's difficulty is far lower than most people would have you think, so can we please stop bringing it up as a hard game?
8. This person has never played an SNK fighting game.
7. Nope. Learn to play.
6. Bringing up the fallback "this is stupid hard" level discredits anything that might've been accurate from this list. The only thing that would've been worse would be bringing up Mushihime-sama Futari's true last boss.
5. Nope. Learn to play.
4. Still a memorizer.
3. Haven't played it, but another example of the justification not actually having to do with anything aside from the author thinking variety is a bad thing.
2. Again, poor programming doesn't warrant a spot.
1. See above.

Warp how have you not played SF64? Anyway no that level is totally not hard or annoying at all.
This reads more like a list of "these games are awesome because you actually need to be good" but throws in curveballs like Madden?!?!?!? and Call of Duty?!?!?!? to make me ultimately say "what the"
Most of this stuff isn't annoying at all. Does the author know what annoying is?
What the heck is pressure-sensitive jumping? I've never even played a game with that. Mega Man has always had variable jump height and still does, if that's what he thinks he means. I know some games don't, and those can be slightly annoying I suppose. Maybe he just didn't play any of these games.

Oh and that screenshot shows MK64's Rainbow Road, you know, one of the ones with guardrails.

Chupperson, I never owned an N64 during its heyday, and all my friends owned PlayStations. I own an N64 now but don't have that game, and it hasn't really been a high priority (but I'll definitely play it on 3DS).

I'm guessing "pressure-sensitive jumping" means the analog buttons make variable jump height easier for players who aren't smart enough to know how to let go of buttons early.

Seth might be annoying, but that goes for most fighting games' final bosses (restating my earlier complaints about Jedah and Dust of Osiris here), and again, SNK fighting game bosses are the worst.

I'm having trouble parsing cosmic_c's post. Is he saying speaking proper English is "prissy talking"? Or is it the subject matter? (If it's the latter, why is he on a video game-oriented forum?)
