Title: Favorite Mario Kart
Post by: Tavros on November 02, 2013, 12:44:28 PM
So what's your favorite Mario Kart? Mine's my first, Super Circuit.

Tough call. DD was the most fun to play with friends, but I found MKDS's controls and physics to be the most solid.

Double Dash is awesome with friends. MK7 is my current favorite.

64 and DS are the ones that I have played the most of, by far. I played a good bit of Super Circuit, as well, and a small amount of Double Dash, but none of them quite tops DS.

DS is probably the best overall (7 could have rivalled it if it hadn't been rushed for Christmas), but Double Dash will always be my favorite.

I rank DS lower mostly because it's a hassle to play it with multiple people. A console Mario Kart with its mechanics would be supergood.

Console:  DD and Portable:  DS.

What about other kart racing games?  I liked ModNation, but the load times killed the experience.  I haven't played LBP Karting.  How was it?

I also enjoyed the Namco racing game at E3 that had Pac-Man, but I can't recall its name at the moment.

Excite Truck was the most fun I ever had with a racing game!

I always thought that DKR was the best racing game made for the N64.

Pretty much this, although DS does have an unfortunately hard-to-setup multiplayer experience.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed (seriously it's actually really good)

Hard to pick between 64, Super Circuit and DS. I went with Super Circuit because of Ribbon Road and Lakeside Park.

I remember when Super Circuit came out; I was obsessed with "unlocking Waluigi." Because the internet told me he was a character that would somehow fit on the roster screen even though it was already maxed out.

I think I liked Double Dash and DS about the same; anything with Baby Park. I haven't picked up DS extensively since I lost a wi-fi match to certain someone here. Actually, I remember that race being questionable at best; for whatever reason our games told us we won and the other lost.

One thing I love about MK64 is the way Mario, Luigi, and Wario sound. I think they have the best voices in that game.

Also nostalgia gets it my vote.

Are they about the same in Super Circuit? Because I couldn't stop laughing whenever I heard Luigi and Wario in it.

It reminds me of when I used to play Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and heard Mario say, "That tickled!" whenever I triggered a battle sequence.

Did you ever notice just how many characters in Super Circuit say the word "Bingo" when they hit someone with an item?

It's like they completely forgot what they're playing
Title: Re: Favorite Mario Kart

I believe that may stem from Luigi (and maybe a couple others) saying that in MK64.

Bingo! Hohohohoho!

MKSC recycled voice clips from Japanese MK64, for most characters.

In which Peach recommends that you "get lady" (http://themushroomkingdom.net/media/mk64/wav)

Probably Mario Kart 64, not because it is the most deep and complete Mario Kart, it is just by nostalgia... The voice clips are memorables, the music and... Bloc fort.

DS, but I miss the unique items and tag-team mechanic from Double Dash. Also, I believe I'm on record as saying that I legitimately enjoyed the bikes, tricks, and control system in MKWii, but the item insanity had reached critical levels at that point.

That item balance bull[dukar] was bad in MKWii and even worse in MK7.

I at least give credit to MK7 for vastly improving the first placer's pool of available items; you're better off frontrunning in it than in any game since MK64, and certainly better than Mario Kart Wii.

Gotta love Wario stadium.

My daughter is having hard time with MKDS since she can't snake.  My favorite is between DD and Wii.  Did you know that Mario Kart DS is now selling for $40 used?  I know because we lost our copy (I believe a neighbor to family we visited last Xmas may have it) I was looking for another copy.  Now I just wish my Wii U could play it natively (as well as the GCN DD).  Regardless I still have the Wii and GCN.

Which Mairo Kart do you think is the easiest for a beginner like my 7 year-old daughter?

After playing MK7, I'll switch my vote from 64 to 7 due to 7 being far more polished, having way more content, as well as online play. 8 will probably take the spot once it comes out.

I'm a huge fan of all the Mario Karts which makes it tough to say. I really liked Super Mario Kart (SNES), but I almost wouldn't even categorize with the other Mario Karts because it's just so different. Personally, I'd have to say Mario Kart 64 and Mario Kart DS are my favorites. I like Double Dash a lot and I was very impressed with Mario Kart 7.

Super Mario Kart Super NES! I love just about every other Mario Kart game too. Although, I didn't just vote for it because it's the first in the series I played and played the most, but also because it has memorable music, wonderful worlds (Super Mario World inspired) and a difficulty level that remains challenging, even through the ages.

There's definitely an aspect to Super Mario Kart that I don't think exists in any of the other Mario Karts.
I like them all, but I can definitely see why you like Super Mario Kart so much. Something about the Mode7 graphics just gives it a unique feel.
I think it'd be pretty awesome if they re-released it as one of the 3D Classics on the 3DS.
It'd definitely be a great candidate for it, especially considering that the original game is split screen just like the 3DS. (And the 3D would look pretty awesome.)

Definitely 64 for me. I've played every version except for DS and 3DS (aka 7).

They're all great games. I still remember playing the SNES version for the first time (this was a few years after it had come out, but before 64). I had played some other racing games in the past, but this was unlike anything else I had encountered. Shells as projectiles? Bananas to slip on? Quirky Mario characters? Yes, yes, yes!!!

The 64 version only built on that. I loved having the wacky voices (no other game has as great of dialogue--64 is simple but effective, and you've got to love Wario going "wahhhh" all the time), the new items (still remember when the game came out; a buddy of mine got it first and he wouldn't stop talking about the spiny shell being added), the graphics (yeah, we all know the racers are 2D sprites, but it was pretty darn good for 1997), and the music. Not sure if they had a CD soundtrack for this game, but I'd definitely buy it even today.

Super Circuit was great too, and I admittedly bought a Game Boy Advance solely for this game. (I did get a few more games later, but being able to take Mario Kart in your pocket pre-smartphone was a good thing).

Double Dash and Wii were OK, but I felt they lost a little bit of the magic of 64. Maybe it was because I was getting older, but I just felt they could have benefited from better soundtracks, fewer characters (8 worked well, 12 is plenty enough, anything over is just overkill), and addition of lost features (like the inability to jump on Double Dash). You can read my opinions on the Wii U (aka 8) in the other thread.

As I said, they're all great games, and I've pre-ordered any version which came out if I had the system to play it on at the time. To me, one of the biggest advantages of the game is the broad age appeal. I'm 27, almost 28, and enjoy Mario Kart as much as I did when I was 10. I know guys in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and even 60s who play the games, and we're not talking parents who are playing it to play against their kids. Not too many games have that great of appeal.
