In spite of the fact that it says "Samus" right there on the selection screen, spoken by the announcer and all.

Hell, I had a similar problem with people thinking Samus was a "robot man".

Knowing what I knew about video games when I first played Melee, I probably fell into both of those groups.  Except I imagine I wouldn't have had any way of knowing what game Samus was from, let alone her gender.
If she is indeed genetically mutated such that she has an eye in the back of her head, then I guess that she is genetically mutated and has an eye in the back of her head.
