It seems like lately we've had a bunch of users in #tmk - some of which are FF members, though that has no bearing on anything - that do nothing but annoy everyone else. As I post this, there's someone in there advertising a channel on another server, spamming, flaming, complaining about us not talking about Mario in there - and now talking about how he's high (and there's precedent for a ban based on that alone). There are five people in there with the power to kick and ban - and all of them are idling.
I see two solutions to this:
1. The current ops and half-ops being more active. I know this isn't really possible - Chupperson left, Fifth is busy with game programming, Sapphira is obsessed with The Sims 2, Deezer is doing whatever Deezer does, Sunbun is...doing whatever Sunbun does...Bird Person isn't around often due to comics, gaming, and his connection (he has a worse satellite connection than I do), Suffix was deregistered for inactivity, and n-fani lives in a radically different timezone than the rest of us. Still, it's either this or...
2. Appointing more half-ops. There are a few channel regulars that are there during the ten hours or so of regular activity and pay attention to stuff like this going on and are competent enough to deal with this.
I'd really rather not take the route of bobman, TEM, and (until recently) SolidShroom and leave the place, and I'd also rather not pull a Mr. Melee and ignore people (story: he had Chupperson - a full op - on ignore, and had to keep putting him on his ignore list because it wouldn't stick). When we're not dealing with retards, it's pretty great - especially on those occasions when Super Caterina! visits - and I'd rather not leave that behind because of a few idiots.
-
I'm around all the time except when I'm at school or asleep or somewhere else (when I'm arting, my screen looks like this (http://moonside.kontek.net/tmk/artstudio.png) so I can sort of pay attention) and I just don't indicate I'm gone anymore. And there are loads of times I'd love to kickban people but am too soft to do it without a real reason.
I'm for the promotion of trustworthy regulars, sure.
-
Tcha! I've been maintaining my registration pretty well now, but I haven't bothered to ask to be registered with M_B again. Perhaps it's about time, eh?
-
There's always going to be members in the chatroom who annoy others. It was that way when I frequented, and I'm sure it's that way now.
It sounds like it's gotten a little lax from what you're saying, but so has moderation around here. Is that really a bad thing?
Then again, I don't know to what extent it currently is. So maybe I'm just chest-thumping here.
-
Oh, how I miss the chatroom. Unfortunately, there's just no time for it.
I appeal to Black Mage's comments as listed above as suggestion. I'm in his boat.
-
"left"
Well maybe that is a pretty good word for it. There are many more rewarding uses of my time.
-
I need to go there sometime...
-
I think that any chatroom in which you get kicked for quoting the old Team Rocket motto has too much moderation.
Or an extremely annoyed moderator whose name rhymes with "Curd Person"...

[12:49:13] -Deezer- 1) No swearing.
[12:49:13] -Deezer- 2) No spamming/flooding.
[12:49:13] -Deezer- 3) No posting links to inappropriate content.
[12:49:13] -Deezer- 4) No impersonating forum users or chatroom users.
[12:49:13] -Deezer- 5) Do not harass your fellow chatters.
[12:49:13] -Deezer- And, yes, acting like an idiot will get you banned.

Sounds like Turtlekid1 blasted off again.
-
I'm not sure I understand. I've said and done stupider things on #tmk and no one has noticed/cared enough to kick me.
-
I should join. I can tolerate a good sum of people.
-
I suppose it's because there's a rule against acting like an idiot. But being an idiot?
-
Exactly! So the solution is to become a real idiot. I've been fine ever since.
-
After I learned the trade of idiocy the Bird Person Way (TM), I became a much more successful member here and on the chatroom... that I don't visit anymore.

Not a good thing for a staff member to admit.
-
Lack of moderation? Well, the need for it is virtually nil because no one talks at all, or it's a fast-paced discussion between 2-3 chatters. During both of those previous situations, everyone just says their one-liner or their "/me" line then everyone is suddenly dead again.
-
That's the times you're there. During the afternoon it's quite busy sometimes.
-
I tried for the first time yesterday and ended up in the middle of a Deadpool discussion.
-
I like how Jake entered the chatroom one time and got away with saying the N-word. Throughout the rest of the chat, I was talking with him on AIM about how he managed to just act recklessly and get no punishment.
It was lol.
-
Because BP is, as he admitted in this very thread long ago, too soft to do anything as a half-op.
-
It wasn't automatically censored by the server?
-
I'm guessing he used a different spelling or something.
-
I still wanna be an Op, I hate swearing as much as Sapphira does, I can't stand it when people act like idiots for no reason, I TRY not to break the rules. (I broke the No Spamming rule, but that was because I didn't know what spamming was or that I was doing it, but hey, live and learn. :/) But still, I wanna be a Op.

Good luck with that. In order to be even considered for a half-op position, you have to be up in the ranks quite a bit. I'm talkin' 007 or 00 Agent here. Based on your post count, you're probably not even an Agent yet. More like MI6 "In-Training".
(Go beat Facility in under 2:05. They like that.)
-
Not only in the chatroom, but here in FF too. I agree entirely with WarpRattler, people who don't have the time, or even want to bother with moderating anymore, should let people who they think would be good for the job be a half-op and get some experience.
I'm in General Chat all the time, look at my stats and you'll see its like the only place I enjoy posting. I know about anything that goes on in there. I don't even know if TMK has any mods from the east coast.

EDIT: Jeez, I just noticed, according to the timestamp, it has taken me a full year + one day to quote your reply, Jim.
...or it's a fast-paced discussion between 2-3 chatters.

Exactly, everyone is typing so quickly during those times, you can't get a word in edge-wise. There's almost no point of even asking questions in there. You ask a question and if someone starts discussing an answer with you, it's almost guaranteed to be interrupted by someone posting a URL to something they find funny or what-have-you. It can be annoying when you're in there to ask something legitimate and everyone kinda ignores it until about 15-20 minutes later when Fifth notices I said something in the midst of the firefight conversation and answers. I appreciate that he's always tried to answer my questions to the best of his knowledge.
That's just my experience. I'm not complaining or anything; I'm just reporting my findings every single time I go into the chatroom. So far, I've gathered this:
If you don't want to:
-Talk about JRPGs (and RPGs in general)
-Talk about shoot 'em ups
-Talk about collector's items that probably not a lot of people are worried about
-Participate in the linkbombing events
-Join the meme/lulz/one-up/4chan/etc. type discussion
...then gtfo.
-
The initiation test has to be harder, highschool level material.

The solution for most of that is to stop trying to talk to Warp.
-
I'd be offended by that if it weren't so true.
But seriously, yes, we talk about non-Mario video games a lot. We talked about collector's items and limited editions exactly once. Most people in there hate memes, so I don't know where that last bit came from.
Sometimes you'll see BP talking about comics or Valve games. Sometimes you'll see Jim talking about fighting games. Sometimes it'll be Fifth talking about game development. Sometimes you'll walk in on a huge argument about how Crash Bandicoot is mediocre. You really never can tell what you'll see until you go in there.
-
Well, Black Mage, the thing is, though, I've never really tried to talk to WarpRattler in the first place. That doesn't mean that I don't like the guy or anything, however.
I just don't have anything to say to him or to other members a lot of the time because I don't have anything meaningful to contribute since I'm not "in" on a lot of the games, etc. they talk about. I've tried my luck at bringing up other subjects sometimes, but it typically gets overshadowed and it happens to other members, I'm sure, and not just me. Again, to reiterate, I'm not complaining nor are my feelings hurt or anything like that. I'm "just sayin"
