Title: Mario will be banned forever?
Post by: HolyAarom on August 23, 2005, 03:25:28 PM
Ever since that "Hot Coffee" scandal for San Andreas, The Government is speaking about changing about what we play forever.

"We cannot allow children to access pornagraphy in Video Games."
Ever since games have been a fad, gamers want to see more. Then developers make games like Dead or Alive and Rumble Roses. Now young viewers would want to see what their older brother/sister is playing and their minds will be screwed. That's not a good thing

Violence in games.
Ever since Mortal Kombat, Parents are concerned about people playing violent games. Especially the kids. To his day, Violent games are still made. They are getting worse. People are now acting violent from Video Games.

In conclusion, If Video Games continue to grow out of control, They will be banned. Even EC games.

Mario, Mario, He''s our man, If he can''t triple-jump and ground-pound, no one can!

Actually I don't think that's needed to be worried about.  I'd like them see to even TRY to ban video games.

Ummm…Signature…?

Mario won't be banned. Nintendo has a reputation for making kids games. X box games possibly

Give me a source, and who those quotes are of, and I'll take you more seriously.

I think you're getting all tied up in a knot over nothing. Angry parents are not anything new. Video games won't be regulated any differently than any other medium of entertainment, which means they won't be going anywhere.

Good point, Koop.

I agree that they shouldn't ban ALL games just because some of em are bad. I would hate for that to happen. :\

Video games are (or at least can be) an art form.  Banning any video game because of its content would be a violation of the first ammendment.

Video Games will not be banned.  It is the peoples problems if they are offended by a game.  As there are rating labels, and, though I don't have a problem with any games, if a person has an issue with the violent/explicit games, then don't buy it.

Please, please, PLEASE,  stop talking badly about both Mortal Kombat and the GTA games.  If you do not like a game because it is violent, don't buy it!

First, Mortal Kombat.  It was not the first game to contain violence.  Yes, it was one of the first games to be as graphic, seeing as I can still get the 'rip-the-guys-head-and-spine-out' fatality nearly every time on the original,  but don't talk about it as if it is the spawn of Satan and all that which is evil.  If you are going to blame Mortal Kombat for introducing Violence, then you might as well pin Duck Hunt for the idea of shooting for sport.

And GTA.  I personally don't like them, but that's no reason to rip them off the shelves.  I have already said this, but if you do not like the game, dont' buy it.  As long as a person isn't influenced into buying a horde of guns and taking on gangs and the police, I don't care who plays what.

Even if there is some insane law that bans so called 'Bad' games, Mario would have to start sniffing lines and do the horizontal tango with Peach to come anywhere near that.  Though not a kids game persay, it is still light-hearted enough.  Also, any ban would never work.  The US tried that before, only saying booze was bad, and thus was made illegal.  It backfired.  Somehow, I doubt this would work any better.

Well, considering the courts seem to actually belive Jack Thompson, I wouldn't be surprised if he somehow stumbled upon something supposedly inappropriate in a mario game and had it's rating rise.

Good luck with that Jack. I'll be over here selling copies of GTA: San Andreas to little kids despite the fact that I have a manager watching my every move.

I'll shut up now before I give him any more ideas.

Kelso: Guys this is a game of Cat & Mouse between me & Hyde. I''m gonna make him admit he''s been going out with Jackie behind my back.
Fez: Guys, what happens in Cat & Mouse if the cat is retarded?

I hope they do ban over gory games and games with porn in them then the world will come back to it's senses and buy GOOD games insted of the games with the most naked poeple or the ones with the most gore and if we're lucky everyone will stop calling Nintendo games "kiddy".
Title: Re: Mario will be banned forever?
Post by: Suffix on August 26, 2005, 09:34:10 AM
I sure wish "kiddy" would somehow morph into "fun," or "entertaining."

A. What the hecks are you talking about, all games will be banned?  Can anyone show me any case in which something was banned in America besides legal reasons (e.g., The Profit, countless sample-heavy recordings)?  With proper releases, you could have the filthiest of porn mixed with the most violent of murder and it would be perfectly legal.  The same applies to video games.

B. If you want to see GTA games off the shelf, run your own store.

C. Right on CMN. (I'm typing responses as I read this thread, so I may just be repeating things that other people have said)

D. People like naked people.  Not all people, but some.  That said, people will always buy games with naked people in them.  They won't be all the games that are bought, but some.  Games will probably become more cinematic over time, and while M-rated games will gain more acceptance (and Nintendo, if wise, will be releasing M-rated games like everyone else), it will probably blend in with the others, such as many people may go to see movies rated anywhere from G to NC-17.  It's just an initial shock thing.  In the future people will laugh at the concept that people were shocked by the stuff in GTA games.  If it had been a movie, it probably would have slid by everyone, unnoticed.

E. "kiddy" somehow morphing into "fun" or "entertaining" just doesn't make sense.  Unless you're in advertising.

Sex sells. The Bible does say, if you can't have anything your hands can't have, don't give it to your eyes. Okay, I might be a little extreme there, but I still think that it's not a good idea to do this kind of stuff.

Ugh, I hate these political-type arguments, but this one's good, even if it is unlikely. Besides, people don't need overly gory games, as Nintendo proves with its great sales with few M-rated games for their systems.

Have any of you heard that GTA:SA was issued an Ao rating recently? I must say I'm glad.

I strongly believe that all games like GTA and God of War should be rated Ao and taken off the shelves of ordinary stores, if they must exist at all. Even if games like those don't make people violent in real life, I believe that they can still corrupt them. And sex in games is NOT GOOD. My explanation for why it isn't can be found elsewhere (probably the "Mario in another T game?" topic). People could very well be inspired to sexual immorality in real life by playing a game with sexual content. It's considerably different from the violence thing. Also, parents will be more likely to buy their kids those games if they are found on the shelves of just any store. And younger kids playing those games would definitely not be good.

EDIT: Oh yes, and I don't think anyone's gonna ban the good games just because there are bad ones. That would be senseless.

"Have any of you heard that GTA:SA was issued an Ao rating recently? I must say I'm glad."

It's been at AO for quite awhile, but it won't be for long. They'll be re-releasing the game with the hot coffee thing taken out, and will most likely bear its original M rating.

Plus, the people at Rockstar made it completely inaccessible, you could only get to the game if you had something like a GameShark. They didn't think anyone would be smart enough to get to it.  Though, why they even MADE the "mini game" in the first place is beyond me....

And as I've said in another thread, not everyone plays video games for the violence. I know people (such as my brother) who own the game who enjoy the free-roaming aspect of the game, in which the character can go anywhere they want, and can stray away from the main point of the game, as it is completely open ended.

(My brother is 20, if you want to know. I also didn't direct this whole reply to you, smfan, the last paragraph is in general.)

Ok, this is also extremely stupid.

-Uh, Mario won't be banned because of something from a totally *different* game and *different* SYSTEM. That wouldn't make any sense for a something of a toally different nature to be banned because of something else. That makes absolutely NO sense.

-Mario like... can never be too bad. The worst thing I have seen in a Mario game is PM:TTYD when Goombella (right?) makes a sexual reference: "Those things really suck... HP." [in reference to the Fuzzies.] The worst rating I've seen is T for Mario... and like borderline E. Mario will never have intercourse with Peach or anything.

-Come on folks, let's grow up here. You don't have to censor EACH word that seems to be bad like "poppyc*ck" or "Andy Rodd*ck." They aren't "bad" words. I figure someone will censor "Moby D*ck" or something stupid in the future.

"...when used in a certain way."

That's what I'm meaning. I'm not meaning "sucks like a vacuum."

It SEEMS like a possible reference... really because of the ellipses after "suck."

Look at it this way, If a person orders a lasagna dinner and specifically asks for no meat, gets it twenty minutes late, and there is meat in it, they would say that the service there "sucks". Fuzzies are the suckiest bunch of sucks to ever suck... HP. And that isn't sexual in the least.

[edit]Also, GTA:SA is really fun. It has a good controll scheme and good gameplay, and as mentioned, incredible open-endedness. And anyways, the violence isn't very graphic or realistic when compared to what's seen in movies with teen ratings.

Ah, right, forgot about this thread.

Two things:

1. In response to Trainman's post, though the whole situation cannot happen, consoles wouldn't matter.  If they decided to ban because of something that happened on a movie on a DVD, then that would be DVD, VHS and cinema gone for you, even if it went straight to DVD.  But again, it would be unconstitutional.  And if they decided to ban the whole danged medium, Mario would most certainly go along with it.

2. "sucks", as in "I didn't get to do my homework and I got an F.  That sucks." is most certainly derived from sexual reference, but has found its way into a strange grey area because little children say it who don't know the first thing about sex.

Oh, come now. It's hardly a "reference" if what you're saying has nothing to do with the "reference" and you and the people who hear it don't think about what's being "referenced".

The word "gun" is actually a reference to a Scandinavian woman's name. When we talk about guns, are *any* of us thinking about Scandinavian women? No, and that's why I wouldn't call it a reference, either.

In conclusion: Goombella never made a sexual reference.

14th century. Probably < Scandinavian name Gunnhildr < gunnr "battle" + hildr "war," from the custom of giving women's names to weapons

A bit farther off.

But this is what makes language so great.  That things can just stray off and earn their own definitions like that.
