Title: Those darn Gamespy ads are getting WAY out of hand.
Post by: WarpRattler on October 05, 2004, 10:33:54 PM
I swear, it's like every other page I view, it comes up as a full-page ad that I have to refresh to get by. Also, aren't those things only supposed to come up a certain amount of times during a session? Or did that change? Whatever happened, I really wish they'd stop with the extreme amount of ads. Oh well, at least it's not like they're showing those Army ads or those stupid Flash pop-ups that you can't even close by pressing the X. Now THOSE are annoying. Well, I should be going back to chatting now...*slaps Deezer with a large trout for no reason in particular*

I have Windows XP with pop-up blocker turned on for classicgaming.com.  I also have, but rarely need to use the Yahoo! Companion Toolbar with a pop-up blocker and a pop-up blocker in my Norton Internet Security.

Although the pop-up blocker is not always turned on in my Norton, it blocks most ads.

Pop-up blockers don't block Gamespy interstitials since they aren't pop-ups...

This is a quick way to block any ad server:
Open the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
(This file might be somewhere else depending which version of Windows you have or different OSes like Mac and Linux, but it should be there somewhere)
Add these lines at the bottom and save the file:

127.0.0.1 ads.gamespyid.com
127.0.0.1 ads.gamespy.com

You might also have to restart your browser or computer.

Mine is C:\Windows\hosts

Works great, and I didn't have to reboot. ^_^

The adds don't bother me, its the Ad-Ware that bothers me...

I tried that so far so good... I thought that doing this required editing the registry...

Seeing as I use Mac OS X and Safari instead of IE, I don't know any sort of techniques for removing those horrid ads.

MacOS X has the hosts file too.  hosts has nothing to do with IE.

I can't find that file. If it helps any, I'm on WinME.

Ah, I see.

After getting help from a friend who knew more about the Mac's Terminal than I did, I was able to add those IPs in. They work great.

donotcare95, maybe run a search for hosts under C:\Windows\ ?

Huh. I never get full page ads or annoying popups, but the small ads are still there. They don't bother me usually...

If you have Firefox, I highly recommend
Adblock.
