Title: Kid Icarus Uprising
Post by: billy chilly on March 24, 2012, 12:36:21 AM
I'm a little shocked we don't have a Kid Icarus Uprising thread!  (Or did I just overlook it?)

I've been on the fence about this one for a few different reasons, but with the game finally upon us, I'm pretty psyched for it. The original KI is my favorite NES game of all time, and I love that the man behind Smash Bros, Kirby and Meteos is the one giving us a brand new Kid Icarus adventure. The control scheme sounds... a little rough though. Do funky controls send Kid Icarus too close to the sun? http://shigeruslist.com/2012/03/23/i-hope-youre-not-sickarus-of-hearing-about-kid-icarus/

I got the game yesterday. The controls actually work just fine in my opinion. It's not that they don't work, it's just that holding the 3DS in the way necessary to play the game becomes uncomfortable after 20 minutes or so. A quick break solves that issue, though.

So, basically the same problem that Metroid Prime Hunters had? I think I'm okay with that, actually. I managed to tough it out all through that game, don't see why I can't do it again.

This is the most ribald Nintendo game I've ever played.

The game comes with that 3DS stand, so honestly I don't think the holding issue is that bad.

Since my brother went ahead and pre-ordered the game, we also got that download code for the 3D Classics version of the original Kid Icarus, which is awesome. Uprising has proven to be a lot of fun and a pretty unique twist to any typical Nintendo game. My favorite chapter so far is Chapter 5...

I just read about the game's control scheme.

No thanks.

It's not that bad. Though I see why they included the stand for it. And the circle pad pro is tempting.

The game itself is making me happy so far. Same thing as Punch-Out!!. You can tell somebody loved the NES and GB games and wanted to see Kid Icarus become something more. The weapons are really cool and the voice acting is wonderful. And I love how meta Pit is about the whole thing. Everybody's got something good going on with their characterization.

Are you left handed?

The only CPP control scheme is for right-handed sticking and left-handed stylusing. Which is odd. The only reason I can think why they didn't allow true dual analoging is that they didn't feel comfortable with how that would work with the ground-battle camera.

Ah, nope, I was fully expecting it to enable the right pad for aiming. Never mind.

I'm tempted to pick up the Circle Pad Pro, since I am left-handed. I'll see how well the "use the face buttons for aiming" control scheme works first, though. I did well enough with it in Metroid Prime Hunters...if it works here, I'll just wait until Monster Hunter 3G comes out (and probably ends up bundled with the attachment, like in Japan, and like how Monster Hunter Tri was bundled with the Classic Controller Pro here).

So my roommate actually went out and bought me a copy after I jokingly said that he should buy me one if he wanted someone to StreetPass with so badly.

It's pretty fun so far.  Reminds me quite a bit of Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days, what with the mission-based gameplay, customizable configurations, and hearts-as-currency (that's a good thing).

Loving this game so far. The button controls are fine, and the game itself is great fun. I definitely agree with BP about the characters, as well; everyone knows they're in a game, and the lack of a fourth wall is used to great effect here.

Thing I really like outside of the game itself: the character portraits on the inside of the box art insert.

(We should play multiplayer, guys! Everything about it sounds pretty awesome!)

Just finished the game. Now I get to go back and play through a near-endless amount of post-game content. So awesome.

The best part of the game was when spoiler spoiler   spoiler.

Also, multiplayer is definitely awesome, and I need to play more of it once I have better weapons.

I never used that stand for the game it was intended for, so I figured I might as well use it for something.

Also, I'm buying KIU for two of my siblings for Christmas.
