Alright, so I've got back into my writing. It's only a short piece, but I don't think I could have added any more to it, even if I wanted to. I threw this piece together on the train ride to university, and I'm hoping to find some way to better my writing, so criticism and comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I felt like a bandage, ripped from a raw wound and cast aside, devoid of use and meaning. My broken body lay below me. Part of me could still feel its aches and tremors. But it was too late for it now. I watched my own eyes close from the outside, felt my conscious self ebb into nothing. And yet, I was here. I was there and I was here.

Was this how it was meant to happen? It seemed so unceremonious, so unimportant. Like an afterthought. Passing in passing. My life had surely been more important than this. My ringed fingers, my scarred face. Even the limp that I wore, like a trinket of honour. I’d lived a great life. I’d left my mark upon the earth. It was as clear as the liver spots upon my hairless scalp.

A door opened. Light filtered into the room. Indistinct voices rang through the air. Screaming and shouting. I felt afraid. I didn’t want to go. I wanted to stay with the elderly gentleman at my feet. We still had so much to share…

Hands closed around my torso. Powerful and yet gentle. I didn’t want to leave, why would I want to? There was so much to leave behind. I felt myself being pulled forcibly from my safety. Painfully. Choking sobs wracked my frame. I was leaving. I stared down at the prone figure at my feet, properly, for the last time.

I felt like a bandage, removed at least from a healed wound. The weary body lay below me. Part of me could still feel her aches and tremors. But it was too late for that now. I felt my eyes open, felt my conscious self awaken. And yet, I was here. I was there and now I was here.

Mario Chat / If you had to get rid of one major Mario character...
« on: May 21, 2011, 06:39:38 AM »
I generally refer to them as the Big Eight, the eight mainstays of the series (especially the Mario Kart games) who seem to keep popping up.

Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Bowser, Wario, DK, Yoshi.

Let's just say that Nintendo have elected to chop out one of the characters from the Mario games, and they can never return. No adventures, no spinoffs, no Geno-like token cameos in mini-games, nothing. My question to you is... who would you pick?

For mine, I'd get rid of DK. He probably adds the least to the series storywise and tbh I hate his new voice with a fiery passion.

Mario Chat / Most Underrated Mario Game
« on: March 09, 2011, 04:14:48 PM »
We all have our favourites from the many Mario games over the years, but as far as widespread acclaim goes, there are always a few that slip under the radar. So, Fungi Forumers, I ask you this: which Mario games do you think are far better than what people would suggest?

My picks;
Yoshi's Story- very kiddy in terms of graphics and such, but all in all a fun (if easy) platformer that stands up well on its own merits. I think it suffers a lot from comparisons to Yoshi's Island when in reality it is quite a decent game.

Mario Kart Super Circuit- with less of the memorability of SMK and MK64, and the fancy graphics of those that followed it, it's not unfair to say that MKSC is the black sheep of the series, when in actuality it combines the gameplay of its two predecessors brilliantly over 40 tracks (half of them recycled but still...) and sports addictive and fast-paced gameplay for the GBA. I always feel nostalgic when I see a MKSC track pop up in a retro cup on MKDS/MKWii.

Game Help / L4D2 connection troubles
« on: December 09, 2010, 09:00:17 AM »
With a few spare weeks on my timetable, I've been looking to reacquaint myself with my old friend, Left 4 Dead 2, over Steam. Unfortunately, I've been having a few troubles connecting, which include but are not limited to:

  • Auto-disconnects soon after joining the server
  • Progress bar stopping and staying stopped before loading a level (this usually only happens when starting from the lobby)
  • "Steam validation rejected" messages when I try to rejoin a server (the progress bar also goes all of the way up quickly before this happens)
  • Black screens when the game should be loading

Occasionally I get into a game, and everything stays fine, but it's a real pain in the ass to have to disconnect from the games and even Steam repeatedly to try and make it work correctly. So far, I've only encountered this error in L4D2, and fingers are crossed that it doesn't manifest itself in other games. I've tried disabling uPNP, forwarding ports on my router, messing around with my firewall, and yet it's being a pain. If anyone could shed some light on the situation, it would be much appreciated. :)

EDIT: some system specs;

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ (2.6Ghz dual core)
RAM: 4GB, DDR2 800
Network adapter: D-Link Wireless G DWA-110 USB Adapter
ISP: Telstra Bigpond

A mindless one-shot about the bane of every Brawl player in existence, and a bird's internal struggles to cope with a recurring menace in his life. This is what happens when I'm up at 11pm/12am with homework to do and no desire to do so. Not a pretty sight by any stretch of the imagination.

The avian pilot leapt to the side in order to dodge a quick and ruthless attack by his powerful adversary. Falco Lombardi smiled to himself as he pulled out a blaster from his belt, letting loose a couple of quick shots to discourage any further action. How far had he travelled? Less than a decade ago, he’d been nothing more than a hoodlum, scouring the streets of Corneria City as a vulture would for weaker prey to pick on. He could recall it as though it were yesterday...

“Hey, you! Stop!”

“Not likely, bub,” shouted back Falco, sprinting like an athlete through the back alleys of the dank streets he called home.

One would think he would tire of this sort of lifestyle, but that one would clearly not know Falco very well. He lived to be on the edge, loved nothing more than the adrenaline rush of putting himself in actual, real danger. Now, with the Cornerian authorities running after him, stun guns firing at his nimble form, the danger seemed more real than ever. All he’d done was snuck into a couple of places here and there. Nothing at all, right?

Falco smirked. There was no way he could be stopped now. His rivals were weighed down with several more kilograms of heavy, bulky equipment, whereas he had nothing to contend with but the contours of the city he knew so well, and the slightest bit of wind ruffling his azure feathers.

Or so he thought.

Corneria, unlike many of the other planets in the Lylat System, was subject to a wide variety of weather conditions. Sweltering heat, chilling frost, powerful storms... and it had just so happened that the latest was rain. Rain that was making it very hard for Falco to maintain his balance, and rain that eventually caused him to flip sideways into a cluster of rubbish bins, with three guns barrels immediately pressed to his throat.

“Is it too late to come quietly?” he mused.

As it had turned out, that one stumble, that trip, had been his saving grace. After being chewed up and spat out by the legal system, Falco accepted a one-time offer to enter the Cornerian Army, where he’d met up with an idealistic young recruit named Fox. And, now... he was rubbing shoulders with the biggest fighters in the universe. If only he’d heard of them first...

“Hoo-argh!” the warrior yelled, thrusting his fist forward amongst a flurry of purple fire.

“Hoo-argh to you too,” Falco retorted as he stepped to the side, before delivering a strong kick to the head of his adversary.

He flew backwards with surprising force, in spite of all of his bulk and armour, and over the edge of the arena. Falco smiled to himself, taunting his recently-departed foe with a small salute. His physical fitness and combat smarts were at an all-time high, thanks to a mixture of his street skills and army-honed combat training. There was no way this medieval whacko was going to trash him.

“Foooxxx!!” whined his reptilian teammate.

Fox, Falco and Peppy sighed as one, lounging in their chairs and waiting for the high-pitched tirade from their junior squad member to cease. There was no questioning his commitment to the Star Fox team, nor his enthusiasm, just that his maturity needed a little work. Even Falco, the quintessential tough guy of the group, was knowledgeable enough to note that his reptilian ally was a whiny little twerp.

“Why do we have to go all of the way to Venom?” Slippy sniffled whilst throwing his arms up into the air in a mini-tantrum, “can’t we just fight them back from Corneria?”

“It’s about more than that, Slippy,” Fox replied, a determined look in his eyes, “he can always come back. I don’t want to let my father down by just doing what’s easy.”

“Fox is right,” Peppy agreed, “if a job’s worth doing, it’s worth doing properly. That’s what James always said.”

Falco groaned internally. While he’d heard all of the stories of James McCloud- decorated war hero, star pilot, Corneria’s protector, and so on- he was getting sick of it. Between Fox and Peppy, he felt as though he’d known the older fox his entire life, even though they’d never met. With all due respect to his best friend, he needed to move on.

“But—“ Slippy began, only to be cut off by the team leader.

“No buts,” Fox stated firmly, “besides, there’s no better time than now to strike. The best defence is a good offence, right?”

“Right!” Peppy yelled enthusiastically.

“Just think of it as a little trip...”

Several little trips later, he was one of the biggest heroes in the Lylat System, and not only that, but he was representing them in some strange new tournament. As his medieval opponent leapt off a platform above, he rolled aside, firing several shots from his blaster to discourage his foe. The stocky man kept coming, ramming forward with his shoulder locked in position. Falco jumped back, but not enough; the man’s momentum was enough to drive a powerful attack into the avian’s chest. He fell to the ground, gasping, before rolling aside to narrowly dodge a powerful punch that impacted on the earth where his head had lay not a second ago.

“Whoa,” he mused, “this is getting serious.”

Falco got to his feet, pointing at his rival.

“Aren’t you supposed to be King of Evil or something? Ha! My grandma hits harder!”

The evil man snarled, launching forward with his foot outstretched and dark flames enveloping his chunky frame. Falco leapt above the sudden strike, just enough to lay one strong kick to the forehead of his foe. The King of Evil’s own momentum spun him backwards, but before he could so much as right himself, the blue bird was already below him, following up with a powerful roundhouse kick which sent his opponent into the distance with a billowing trail of smoke.

“Don’t try me,” he snickered.

A hard-sounding thump indicated his enemy had landed, and a quick glance showed he had righted himself. Clenched fists showed Ganondorf was ready for one last attack. This suited Falco just fine.

“You want me, Ganondork? Come and get me!”

Both combatants started sprinting at each other, their weary bodies both beaten but pumping with adrenaline. Falco’s nimble frame allowed him to cover more ground; Ganondorf was simply too chunky. The pilot drew back one feathery fist, and...

...found himself flipping through the air, as the world was seemingly rent apart all at once. It instantly ended; he lay flat on the ground, unable to do a thing as Ganondorf’s powerful Warlock Punch sent the avian pilot over the edge of the arena and out of sight, with only one bitter thought to accompany him:

God[darn] tripping.

Fan Creations / An Otherworldly Voice: A Story of Fate
« on: December 24, 2007, 03:43:04 AM »
This is a fanfic I am currently working on. I got caught up in all of the Christmas spirit, and decided to write a story that is not related to Christmas in any way whatsoever.

Anyway, the general premise of this story is that it's a crossover, though I've tried to make it more original than the millions of other crossovers out there. Whether or not I've succeeded, well... you be the judge.

All characters used in this story do not belong to me (dang) but rather belong to their respective owners, who I believe are solely Nintendo and Sega. Before beginning the story, I'd like to thank them for making such inspiring games. And now for something completely different; the story itself.

PROLOGUE: It Doesn’t do to Dwell on Dreams…

The evil behemoth loomed over both of the heroes, an unnaturally loud roar emanating from its fang-filled mouth, before sending a powerful punch in the direction of the red-clad champion.

“Watch out!” shouted his blue partner, but it was too late; Mario was crushed beneath the scaly fist, as the cries of his friends provided a backdrop to a booming, roaring laughter. It seemed to put salt in the emotional wounds inflicted upon the witnesses, affirming their belief that Mario was really gone…

The blonde woman awoke with a start, sweating profusely. She sat upright in her pampered bed, breathing heavily. Her eyes were wide, staring without seeing, and trying to dispel the nightmares that had plagued her.

“Trouble, m’lady?” asked a meek voice.

“Not at all, Toadsworth,” the golden-haired beauty said quietly, still spooked by her vision.

Princess Peach Toadstool was not new to having nightmares; during the span of her life so far, she had undergone many terrifying experiences- most involving a certain Bowser- but this one seemed different. She had often dismissed her nightmares as just bad dreams, but now…

“Are you sure?” Toadsworth asked again.

Peach gazed down at her diminutive friend through stunning cerulean eyes; he was an old Mushroom Retainer, one of the many who resided in the Mushroom World. His small beady eyes were filled with worry as he absently scratched at his mushroom-top, white with brown spots. An uncomfortable squirming feeling erupted into her stomach as she realised the repercussions her dream had had on the aging Mushroom Retainer. He was leaning heavily on his walking stick, his generally neat attire looking scruffy and his white moustache unkempt. However, the word moustache triggered something in her memory… Mario, who wouldn’t panic like this…

“Yes, I am quite sure, Toadsworth,” she replied, struggling to keep the tremor out of her voice, “You appear to be quite tired; may I recommend a good night’s sleep?”

Toadsworth appeared to relax. Peach smiled to herself; after being rescued so many times by the moustached hero, she began to act more like him, more courageous and brave than the timid and regal princess who had originally been kidnapped by the evil Koopa King. Mario wouldn’t let himself fall apart because of something like that, and neither shall I, Peach mused.

Toadsworth, satisfied that the princess was alright, left the room, pulling a rich wooden door shut behind him. Peach was out from under the soft crimson covers in an instant; she pulled on a rose-coloured satin gown, getting to her feet and rushing to the door. The nightmare had been realistic; too realistic to be a coincidence. She had to see if Mario was alright. Pressing an ear to the door, she listened for any footsteps; there were none. She pulled open the door, stepping through the doorway quietly and making sure not to make too much noise. Mario was staying on the floor above her, in preparation for his surprise 30th birthday party.

So, why am I here-a, princess?” he had asked as he stepped gallantly into the palace’s main hall.

It’s a surprise,” she had replied, grinning to herself, “but you should get your rest. It’ll be a busy day tomorrow.

In the present, Peach Toadstool took a deep breath.

“It was just a dream,” she told herself sternly, “and when you walk up to his room, everything’ll be just the way it was before you fell asleep. Just relax.”

And, without further ado, she dashed into the darkness, willing her heart to heed what reassurances she had voiced.

A bit on the short side, but the next few chapters (or the ones I've written, at any rate) are longer. Anyway, enjoy, and Merry Christmas.

Forum Games / Star Fox: The Attack on Venom
« on: January 21, 2007, 11:45:12 PM »
Star Fox:
The Attack on Venom
(Working title)
A Roleplay based on Star Fox 64

Story
(an excerpt from Star Fox 64)

Corneria, fourth planet of the Lylat System. The evil Andross turned this once thriving system into a wasteland of near extinction.

General Pepper of the Cornerian Army was successful in exiling this maniacal scientist to the barren, deserted planet Venom.

Five years later, General Pepper noticed strange activity coming from Venom. James McCloud, Pigma Dengar and Peppy Hare of the Star Fox team were sent to investigate. Upon their arrival, Pigma betrayed the team and James and Peppy were captured by Andross.

Peppy barely escaped Venom and returned home to tell James' son Fox about his father's fate.

A few years have passed. Andross has again invaded the Lylat system. General Pepper has turned to a new Star Fox team headed by Fox McCloud to save Corneria and free the Lylat system once again.

Heroes

Fox McCloud*
A young, confident pilot who is the leader of the Star Fox team, which was founded by his late father. He graduated from the Cornerian Flight Academy with flying colours, and, instead of becoming part of the Cornerian Army like his close friend Bill Grey, he followed in his father's footsteps and became a mercenary. His mother was killed after one of Andross' attacks, and Fox vows to destroy Andross at any cost.

Peppy Hare*

Reserved by PaperLuigi
Peppy was a close friend of James', and is the oldest member of the Star Fox team. He once declined leadership of the Star Fox team, preferring Fox take the helm. He acts as a sort of father figure to Fox, giving him advice and helping him in combat. Peppy also has a wife named Vivian and a young daughter named Lucy, and, due to being a friend of James, is determined to take down Pigma, whatever the price.

Slippy Toad*

Reserved by Mr.Melee?
Slippy is a long-time friend of Fox, who graduated alongside him from the Cornerian Flight Academy. While not as skilled at flying as his friend, he is an invaluable team-mate, experienced with operating advanced technology. He has made several modifications to each of the Arwings (which are the ships that the Star Fox team fly), making them faster and more powerful.

Falco Lombardi*
Not much is known about the past of this shady character, but he has repeatedly been connected with people such as Katt Monroe and Leon Powalski. He often gets into arguments with the rest of the team, most notably Fox, but is a skilled pilot, perhaps even more so than Fox himself. Falco, while skilled, is also quite arrogant and sarcastic.

General Pepper
General Pepper is a more senior part of the Cornerian Army, and is famous for exiling Andross and therefore ending the threat- at least, for the time being. He is determined to see the Star Fox team back in one piece, having never forgiven himself when sending James to his death on Venom.

Bill Grey*
Bill Grey is a close friend of Fox McCloud and Slippy Toad, having flown alongside them at the Flight Academy. Instead of joining them in the new Star Fox team, Bill opted to follow the traditional route and become a part of the Cornerian Army. He is a skilled pilot and brilliant fighter, two qualities which make him a born leader.

Katt Monroe*
Katt is part of a mysterious group of fighters, determined to protect her planet; Zoness. She has been a long time ally of Falco, much to his disappointment, and her past, like his, is shrouded in mystery.

Villains

Andross
The once-praised scientist turned maniacal evil overlord currently resides on planet Venom, using its isolation and inhospitableness to launch multiple attacks on the rest of the Lylat system, most notably Corneria. He was once helping the planet, and is now its number one enemy. His army of fighters is expansive and almost insurmountable; but will it be able to defeat the Star Fox team?

Wolf O'Donnell*
Reserved by Ultima Shadow
A former friend of Fox, he quickly turned against Corneria after his parents were killed during his time in the Cornerian Flight Academy, suspected of being on Andross' side. Searching for answers, Wolf was taken care of by Andross, and grew to hate Corneria- and therefore, Fox.

Leon Powalski*
This mysterious chameleon is notorious for being a master of disguise and evasion. He once knew Falco and Katt, but in mysterious circumstances they became enemies to him. Joining Andross and Wolf, he started to grow slightly insane and twisted.

Pigma Dengar*
Another former ally of Corneria, Pigma was on the fateful mission that took the life of James McCloud- and was also the cause of his death. Now a part of Andross' ranks, he is greedy and notorious for being dangerous. He, like Leon, has a slightly twisted mind.

Andrew 'Algy' Oikonny*
Andrew is the nephew of Andross, and also part of his army. Despite being a sub-par pilot, he is placed very high in the chain of command, most probably due to his relation to the scientist. He has no specific grudge against Corneria or the Star Fox team, but, due to his cowardice and fear of his uncle, he fights against them all the same.

* Characters with an asterisk next to their name can be RPed as, and characters with a strike through their name have been taken.

Custom Characters

Custom characters are permitted in the RP, so long as they make sense. Please don't give your character some sort of all-destroying power... if you're doubtful, use an existing character if possible. If all characters are taken... who knows, I may add some more from the game. ;)

Nevertheless, custom characters should be created using this form:

Name:
Animal: (please try to be realistic)
Description: (colour, age, skills, etc.)
Good, Neutral or Evil?: (self-explanitory)
Ship: If it already exists, just the name- but if not, a description could help.
Extra?: (home planet, family, allies, etc.)

Rules and Tips

  • Please do not use chatspeak in your posts. Come on, could you honestly see someone saying 'lol' in real life?
  • If at all possible, don't control characters that are currently being controlled by other characters. Mentioning them is okay, just don't overdo it.
  • If you have something to say that is separate from your RP post, it would be appreciated if it is placed in a quote tag.
(Will probably update more later)

How to Post

This RP is different to the traditional kind of TMK RPG... it resembles more of an on-going story, except you primarily control your character and their allies (preferably none that already have an assigned character). You post a sort of mini-story centering around your chosen character, and continue with the story from there. Eg: If I were to control Wolf (which I do), then my posts would center around Wolf and his whereabouts. If I chose Fox instead, he would be the focus of my posts.

Worlds

Wikipedia Page on the Lylat System

The RP will span all 15 levels from Star Fox 64, ending at Venom. Note that Fortuna will still be called that, despite the correct name being Fichina.

All Levels:

Corneria, Sector Y, Meteo, Aquas, Katina, Fortuna, Zoness, Solar, Sector X, Sector Z, Macbeth, Titania, Area 6, Bolse Defense Station, Venom.

~~~
I'll probably update with more info later... my brain is dead right now. *clicks post*
Each day, we throw things away. Food wrappers, old documents, broken toys, vegetables, meat, fruit, and countless other obselete items. You can learn a lot about people from what they throw away- not that I'm suggesting you go through other people's garbage, or anything. :)
So, what's in your trash can/bin/garbage/rubbish? In mine, there are tons of food wrappers.
Forum Games / Mario Kart Survivor-type thing!
« on: January 06, 2006, 10:50:00 PM »
Welcome to Mario Kart Survivor! I'm your host, the Aqua Yoshi! (not really, but I wanted to be out of character) It turns out the Mario Kart characters have crashed on a deserted island, and, because I have nothing better to do, we're going to rip off Survivor!
Booting people off the island is simple. First of all, you check if the character has been booted off or not. When a character is eliminated, a <BOOT> symbol will be next to the name. Then, you vote. It's just that simple!
The first character to recieve five votes is booted, then all votes are reset and it keeps going until there are two karters left, in which the quota is raised to nine votes.
Confused? Doesn't matter. You can ask any questions in the thread. BTW, if the voting's closed, it means that someone's going to be eliminated in some funny way. Anyway, vote now- BTW, if your character that you voted against is kicked out, remove your vote if you want to vote again.
Intro: Crash
Mario looked up, his head spinning.
"Mamma mia, where am I?" he asked, looking around.
"You're on a deserted island, duh," Wario rolled his eyes, grinning.
"This is only part of the show, bro," Luigi laughed, walking up to his brother.
"Hey, do you want your paycheck docked?" asked Peach.
"We might as well make the most of this situation," Toad mumbled.
"H-How? We're stuck on a desert island! Surrounded by water!"
After playing Super Mario Sunshine, Yoshi was slightly afraid of water. Bowser laughed.
"I can finally cream all of you in battle!" he roared, but no-one was listening- everyone was looking at the gigantic beast that was in front of them.
"Eep." they all said in perfect unision, except for DK, who no-one could understand.
Video Game Chat / A Huge Dilemma...
« on: January 04, 2006, 05:07:27 PM »
My birthday's coming up pretty soon, and usually, by this time, I have a fair idea of what I want, but, right now, I'm not sure. I've compiled a 'Birthday Wish List' and am wondering what I should get. I like the games because:
The Sims: I would like to control the little people. To quote: 'Dance, my puppets'.
GBC: I've really missed playing SMBDX, and am also seeing if, like many have suggested, if Pokemon Crystal is a good game. It certainly seems good...
Hit and Run: Simspons. Enough said.
Gamepad: This could make gaming heaps more fun, and I could try and reinstall some of my older games to go with it.
Can someone please help me make ths decision? I'm stuck on which to ask for. Thanks.
Mario Chat / MKDS: Nitro or Retro? *Spoilers*
« on: December 27, 2005, 02:07:16 AM »
Mario Kart DS is in my opinion the best Mario Kart so far, with a total of 32 tracks! Stunning graphics, infinite replay value and a wide cast of characters put it at the top. However, there's one question that's been in my mind for ages- which is better, Nitro GP, or Retro GP?
Nitro GP may have new and interesting courses, but Retro GP puts a new spin on familar faces. You can also say you like both, or neither, or that you like one better but it could be better.
Post your opinions here!
Hey, everyone! Welcome to the first TMK Mario Sprite Sheet Challenge! I'll be your host, Ultima Shadow! Unfortunately, the contest is over... here are the results!
FINAL ENTRIES
DK and Rambi Rider by Super Sonic Yoshi
DBZ Mario Brothers, SMW style by SSJ3 Mario Brothers
Fighting Sprites, SMW Style by Metal Slug Mario (Attachment Number 1)
3rd place goes to the Dragonball Z-esque Mario Brothers sheet by SSJ3 Mario Brothers! Containing a large amount of poses, it was a great idea, but, unfortunately, didn't receive many votes.
2nd place goes to the Fighting Mario sheet by Metal_Slug_Mario! It may not have had as many poses as SSJ3MB's sheet, but it was extremely versatile and could easily be used for a fighting fangame! Great job!
And, finally... the first place ribbon goes to...
Supersonic_Yoshi and his DK Rambi Rider sheet!
This sheet had the least amount of poses, but was excellently designed, clear, and completely custom made! Showing true spriting prowess, it is a fine example of the computer artistry that TMK's members can produce.
Thanks everyone for entering the competition! Well, that's all, folks! See ya!
