Title: What Amuses You?
Post by: Mr. Melee on June 07, 2006, 06:18:15 PM
What kind of things amuse you? Are you the person that laughs at a good joke? Or are you the hyperactive happy person who laughs at anything, such as waffles? Or possibly you're the creepy person who believes laughing is obsolete? Either way, just tell everyone what things actually make you crack a smile and chuckle.

For me, it's good music and weirdness (A.K.A. stuff me and my other friends only get).

I always laugh at someone who makes a funny point or is acting silly or telling a funny story.  My aunt always makes me laugh because her life is so ridiculous!  My uncle has a good way of making things funny also, but he is not a total goofball like my aunt.  I never laugh at someone who is being annoying or is telling a joke that is supposed to make you laugh just because it is a joke about chickens or refridgerators.

I love laughing, although I do not laugh at anything. I laugh at stupid things when I have had to much sugar!

I laugh at ironically funny things. Like yesterday, my mom came home with a burger for me and I said "yay, food." My mom responded with "what?" and I repeated "yay, food." Then my sister says from behind me "what?" And almost angrily I said "yay, food, you people never listen to me!!" And wouldn't you know it, my mom said "what?" We all just laughed.

I laugh at the wry turn of a phrase and clever puns when (pun intended) is not written next to them. People acting silly, not so much. Sometimes. If it's really really silly.

I used to laugh at anything as a child.

Now, not so much...

Subtle jokes are the funniest. I laugh at anything truly funny, not stupid-funny.

My friend John's pretty funny looking, so I laugh at him. Haha I'm kidding but he does make the funniest jokes.

This may sound weird, but I laugh a those "sick" jokes. You know, the ones I'd rather not tell here? Well, no idea why, but they entertain me, I laugh at other things, but that's when I'm with my friends.

I find it funny when people suck in helium and then talk.  :)
I also find it humorous when people get pleasures out of the simplest things.  For example, an onion in a salad.  This one guy I was sitting next started to sing "Onion!" because he found one in his salad.  This other girl was also very happy because she had an "imaginary popsicle".  It's weird, yet very funny.
I also like dry humor to a certain extent, but too much of it can just be cruel.  However, strangely enough, I have been told many times by a numerous amount of people that I have a "dry humor that is just hilarious".  One of such people was even my teacher after I acted a scene out in Romeo and Juliet.  O_o

There are two things that I find hilarious -- complex, somewhat dark humor, often topological humor (See the Daily Show/Colbert Report), and things that are so incredibly random, outlandish, or bombastic that your mind just gets thrown for a complete loop (see animutation/the Arfenhouse series).

Lowbrow/slapstick/toilet/"shock" humor is not amusing to me at all. I've never been a fan of comedy routines that focus mainly on race as the basis for the routine. I get it. People are different. Sheesh.

We'll still see him on saturdays. John's funny enough to fill up your week. (Speaking of, why is he never on MSNM? Or is it just that I'm not...? Well, my internet should stop shutting down on us now)
Today we were in Target and I was standing somewhere. My sister says "MOVE! You're in my way." And I wasn't even in the way. I'm not THAT huge, there's an aisle otherwise clear of people. So my dad puts his hands over his mouth like a megaphone and says "Attention shoppers, please clear the aisles. You're in my daughter's way." I just busted up laughing, I didn't care who was watching. On the way home I made a hand-megaphone and said "Please clear the road, this car contains a V.I.P." She hit me. Oh well. I have one crazy family.

XD I love that.  And I love this topic.  Three thumbs up.

What amuses me?  I laugh at funny thoughts I get in my head that anyone else would call stupid or insane.  I love comics like Dilbert, Garfield, and Far Side.  Dilbert is rediculous office humor, Garfiled is funny overweight/stupidity jokes, and Far Side is... far out there.  I also like Bible jokes too.  Like one year I was working in the kitchen of a Bible camp and one day was temporarily in charge of getting more cereal when we ran out.  So this girl in line for food asked me if I could get her some Life cereal because we had ran out.  So I left, came back with a box, and then said, "I have to come to give you life more abundantly!"  Ha, you have to know it.

I also like random jokes, pointlessness, and obnoxiousness as long as it doesn't cross the line*.

* This line that Y.R. speaks of is in his own definition and held to be judged by his own ideas.  Not all obnoxiousness may be judged the same way in all situations and all feelings.  Results may vary.  Please ask a doctor about this if you are nursing, pregnant, or may become pregnant.

I like many kinds of humor: parodies/spoofs, some bathroom humor, the Rocky and Bullwinkle humor that tests one's knowledge, Monty Python, the surrealism in Spongebob Squarepants, and much more.  I'm usually pretty funny, if you read any of my humor fanfics on fanfiction.net (Most recommended is Super Smash Bros. Insanity)

I laugh at everything. People always tell me I should act my age, but I can't help but laugh at toilet humor and fart jokes. Political humor also amuses as do parodies of religion. Both subjects always seem to play some role in huge decisions so it's nice to see them ridiculed. Racial and sexual humor get two reactions out of me: " Holy crap, that's screwed up" or "So freakin' true". I also laugh at tasteless humor, which has gotten me in trouble before. Slapstick is great too.

Glorb: >_< Legos rule!  They stretch your creativity and teach you about building skills while you're a kid!  When I was young I loved legos and built lots of cool junk.  Mostly stuff like little buildings and ramps that you could roll marbles around.  Never dis' da 'go's!

Randomness makes me laugh, which is a good thing, I guess, since my life is pretty random. Also, for you Pittsburgh folks out there, columnist Bob Smizik in the Post Gazette usually makes me laugh too, since his sports stories are so true yet he writes it so the players sound even more pathetic than they are.

I also got a lot of laughter out of the time my best buddy and I threw old computers from our school into the dumpster. I don't know why, but I laughed so hard at it. I think it's because I'm not really that up on technology and I've wanted to do it to so many of the computers that my school and college use/have used. I know Mac OS 9 (and the one that came before it, System 7) and that's about it. The school actually gave me this ancient Macintosh because the new computer dude didn't know how to use it and they knew I used the older Macs. I've only turned it on once and I don't use it much at all, but it looks sort of cute on my desk next to my iBook. It's one of those little fellows with a built in monitor called a "Color Classic". They say it can handle the internet with some card that they put in it for me, so maybe I'll try it if I ever get more adventerous with computers. (And for the record, I have a couple other old Macs sitting around--my old "Macintosh LC" from my childhood that is in its box (maybe it will be worth something?) and this black and white one which looks sort of like the "Color Classic" that's probably as old as I am called a "Macintosh SE" that I use for Quicken because nobody would probably steal something that old, plus I don't have a newer version of Quicken--my dad found this computer and had no use for it so I use it for my bank account. It's actually a really easy computer to use).

Yeah, I ranted off there. Another thing I find relatively funny, speaking of computers, is some people on AIM. I've seen people with the most random screen names, or ones that describe them perfectly that just seem really funny. Also, the way some people talk on AIM amuses me not only because it looks sort of funny but because I have to look it up--my dad got me a mouse pad that I used to keep next to my computer that had the meaning of all of them on there. Things like "L.O.L" or "B.R.B". They sounded like college degrees or something to me until I decoded them. It's pathetic that my dad knows more about internet lingo than I do, but then again I don't spend four hours in front of the computer at a time (though I've been using it more since I started college since all my friends are on AIM at night and that way I can talk to more than one at a time--the phone limits me to only one but I like the phone better because there is nothing better than a good converstion!)

Another thing that makes me laugh is when people have funny accents. I'm from Pennsylvania, so I laugh at southern accents all the time. When the movie "Forrest Gump" opened, I was laughing like a madman at Tom Hanks doing the Alabama accent. A lot of things in that movie made me laugh, like that line about Apple Computer being a fruit company and especially the entire football scene. (I used to think Apple Computer was somehow related to the local orchard when I was a little kid, so it really made me laugh). I have to really control myself when people talk with heavy accents from other countries (British especially). I don't know why, but it just makes me laugh.

There is one big thing I don't find funny though, and that would be bathroom humor. Burps, passing gas, and bodily excretion does nothing for me. For some reason most of the guys (and a few of the girls) I know seem to think it's pretty funny, but I don't see what's so funny about something that's not only disgusting but also just part of human life. It's like laughing at someone because their small intestine processes food, and I know nobody here probably laughs at that sort of stuff.

I also don't find people getting cheap laughs at the expense of others very funny. I have a friend, she's like a little sister to me, who is very ticklish. She literally will scream like she's been murdered and kick whoever tickles her really hard if you get her. Well, a good friend of mine liked to see this reaction. He tickled this poor girl intentionally many times just to see this (I had to get in his way for him to stop it). I mean, her reaction was funny, but she was in so much pain as a result. So I didn't laugh at all when I saw this happen.

Well, that was a long post, but it looks like it's been a while since anyone on this board has been amused (the last update to this topic looks to be sometime in June) so I guess this makes up for the four weeks or so nobody posted?

When there's nearly as much text in a single bumping post at the rest of the thread.  Good jorb.

When I post in a thread with out reading all the text of the preceding post.

When I keep typing "when" even though the questions was "what".

I don't know what amuses me.  When other people are laughing, I start laughing.  Unless they're laughing at me, then I pop a .47 calibur into their-- uh, I mean I feel bad when people laugh at me, so I try not to laugh at other people unless they're trying to be funny.

Sometimes people's attempt at humor is funnier than the humor they are attempting.  MB's THREAD thread title was hilarious to me, but this theard is about merely amusing things so I shouldn't have mentioned it.

Sometimes I laugh randomly to myself. Well, not quite randomly... I'll be thinking of something someone said earlier (I tend to do that... when I say something, I'll say it again and again in my head... Sort of strange, I know) and just start laughing and my sister will just turn and look at me like I'm crazy.

Humor is the small cracks in a self schema that can't be filled by logic.  If it's predictable--believable--it's not funny.  If it falls into an overlooked fallow and lands with a strange sound, and nobody can quite piece together the line of causation, you'll get some laughter.

Men taking footballs to the groin is funny.

Wow... that whole explanation of what is funny, and then you go and list something that isn't funny at all as being funny. I don't understand. That kind of stuff isn't funny, it's ultra predictable, especially in scripted events.

I also like things that let you use your imagination. For example: Anyone ever see the old kids TV show "Salute your Shorts"? If not, on the show one form of punishment the campers came up with for other campers was the Awful Waffle. An incident would go like this:

"I think he deserves an.... AWFUL WAFFLE!"
"I'll get the syrup!"
"I'll get the tennis racket!"

And everyone else would stand there and chant "Awful Waffle! Awful Waffle! Awful Waffle!" until some adult came and broke everything up. To me, the Awful Waffle is ingenious and hilarious because they don't describe it past syrup and a tennis racket.

... something that isn't funny at all..
No way.  Men taking footballs to the groin is funny.  I'm talking about a live performance here--not some America's Funniest Home Videos moment.  Also, women taking, say, a dodgeball to the groin can be funny.  It hits with a sort of dull thud, like a padded bellyflop, and they giggle like, "Haha, we have no weakpoints."  The post that I made before wasn't trying to be funny if that's what you're getting at.  It was remarkably dull in its analysis of humor, and the last sentence was intended not as a demonstration but rather an explanatory amendment to the general thesis:  Humor can never be analyzed perfectly.

Well the most amusing thing happened to me today. My family and I were coming back from visiting the grandparents, and someone passed us and kept zooming ahead. (They had to be at least going 70 in a 55 zone.) Anywho, I commented "If that's not speeding...I don't know what is." And a couple of minutes later, a highway patrol man flipped a "U" and pulled them over...it was hilarious.

70 in a 55?!  Sounds like somebody had to go real bad. >_<

You know, I just remembered something.  Last month I watched this hilarious video of the comedian Ellen Degenerous and she had a great message about procrastination.  It was so incredibly funny but the interesting thing was that it was like listening to a sermon but one loaded with humor and no spirituality.  Here's what it was like:

[Spoilers]At the beginning, Ellen started to talk about procrastination and I thought for sure that I knew what she was going to say (but I was so wrong).  Before she talked about procrastination she put it off for awhile to talk about other things, which I found hilarious.  She jumped from topic to topic about random stuff like frustrating objects (tough-to-open pickle jars, big rolls of thin toilet paper), looking stupid in front of other people, and lots more.  At the end of the show she finally got back on topic and convinced me that procrastination was a good thing. [/Spoilers]

So, at the end she said that procrastination can be a good thing because sometimes we hardly give people much of our time because we're so busy.  "We try to save as much time as we can... and what do we do with that time?  Absolutely nothing!"  I got a lot from that and now I try to remember to set time for other people and stop worrying about how I look.  I definitely suggest that anyone watch that movie because I think you'll enjoy it (a little offensive but not too much).  "Procrastinate as soon as possible!  Do not put it off." XD

I got amused yesterday because we went to this museum-type thing, and in this demonstration of the two-handed longsword in combat, there was some great comedy. Examples include crotch-kicking and the following:

Guy 1: If there's a four-foot piece of steel coming at you...
Both guys: GET OUT OF THE WAY.

Guy 2: It's never a good idea to fight with your shoe untied. *ties his shoe*

My cousin and I went to McDonald's last week and she got one of those happy meals that day. I also noticed Ronald, but he was on the box, very randomly placed among the pirates. Normally I don't notice stuff like that, but it was so random.

Do they even use Ronald much for advertisement anymore? Back in the day they used to give away random Ronald and Grimace toys a few times a year but now it looks like every toy is based off a movie unless it's a Barbie/Hot Wheels promo (which they ALWAYS used to have in August). Now there's just a few random Ronalds here and there but you never see the others (Hamburglar, Fry Guys, the Mayor, etc). They tore this old McDonald's in my area down and the walls were plastered with pictures of these guys there (plus they were on this electric three-seat Merry-Go-Round that was in the place and all over the playground) but the new one they built in its place is pretty much character-free.

The McDonald's Merry-Go-Rounds used to amuse me. Instead of horses they had burgers on the heads. There were three of them on this little tiny Merry-Go-Round. I think it could either be automatically or manually controlled--I remember seeing this light switch that seemed to control it at some point. They took it out of most of the McDonald's in the late 1990s. They didn't play music or anything but some of them were a bit noisy (I'm not sure how well these things were built or if it's because ten kids would pile on one of the burgers at the same time). Most of the service plazas along the PA and Ohio turnpikes seemed to have them in the late 1980s/early 1990s, as did the one location I mentioned earlier. I think the outdoor playgrounds sort of replaced them.

If anyone still has one of these at their McDonald's I'd love to hear--it used to be half the fun of going to McDonald's for me.

I was just on this long trip back home, and we stopped at a Mcdonalds chiefly to go to the bathroom.  But inside, they had some game systems set up on the side like they have at GameStop, and Super Mario Sunshine was going.  I also remember at a Mcdonalds by my old school there was a Ronald statue sitting on a bench.  I think they removed those things after a kid got his head stuck in between his arm once or something.  There were also the Mcdonalds play places, which were pretty cool.  I was actually scared to go deep into it, because I would have gotten shocked,  So I usually stayed in the ball pit, which is one of THE best things about childhood.  I wish they made adult ball pits... but then it wouldn't be so special.

I thought Markio was referring to the kid getting his head stuck in Ronald McDonald as funny, and I kind of think it's a little funny.

I thought of something funny to myself. Galloping duck! It just sounds funny, and when I try to picture a galloping duck, I laugh. Then I had to use it in a sentence with a good meaning, so I came up with, "A day in my life is like being a galloping duck." I also have a feeling YSR will find that galloping duck is funny.

Old cartoons, like the classic Looney Tunes and most cartoons shown on Boomerang.  I am also amused by physical humor, and jokes that don't revolve around sex and drugs.  Not to say I won't laugh at a joke like that, as I did when I saw "Talladega Nights."  This is why some of the shows on Disney appeal to me.  I am also amused by classic televison, such as Green Acres and Little House On The Prairie

I laugh at almost anything, it could be a weird situation, like I think its funny because I know exactly what they are talking about, but the other person doesn't.  Or it could remind me of something funny.  I am famous for laughing out loud, at moments that aren't really a good time for laughing, like when your getting yelled at by a teacher, and they're yelling while giving you a speech.  I always laugh during those, I can't help myself.

The only way to put me to sleep faster than watching those shows would be to hit me in the head with a hammer. I like the Munsters, though.

Mr. Melee: Actually, I didn't find it funny.  At first.  But then the fact that something you said I would find funny didn't even seem funny to me... made me laugh! XD Oh brother.  But if I saw a galloping duck on TV I'm sure I would laugh.  "Whut?  That's not a horse!  You got two halves of a coconut and you're bangin' 'em together!"

Right now I'm taking a philosophy course and learning about the great philosopher Socrates.  This guy is a genious and at the same time really funny.  He asks millions of questions to people and they get mad because he makes them look like idiots.  Sadly, he even gets put to death by the Athens because of it!  Here's a few of my favorite lines from him (but only the last one is something I think is funny):

“The unexamined life is not worth living”
“For he knows nothing, and thinks that he knows, while I neither know nor think that I know.  And in this I think I have a slight advantage.”
“My friend!  Will you leave me in despair?  And here I had hoped that you could teach me what holiness itself is.” (you would have to read the whole conversation to get it)

I love philosophy.  To a point.

LD: XD Excuse me for my ignorance but how can you get away with that?

CW's sig: I have more Bibles than Sapphira does.  And I probably have more spiritual books than she does too! (>=(:  )@)

That doesn't seem so nice, making people look like idiots.  Neither is killing, though.

I haven't seen my friends lately, I should try to find them.  They amuse me!

Oh yeah... I forgot to mention that Socrates made people look like idiots because they acted like they knew stuff, but after he questioned them for a long time he showed that they had no idea know what they were talking about.  It wasn't his goal to make them look like idiots but he simply had a passion for philosophy that he kept all the way to his death.

XD The message you say now after editing is pretty funny because it's the exact opposite of what you say before editing.  Did someone have a change of heart? ;)

Ohhh, I don't know about my geometry teacher. I can barely hold in my laughter. I'll tell you why.
1. Her name is Ms. Couch, for one.
2. She gives us 5-a-days, but they're typically 4 or 6 problems, and only once has it been 5.
3. There are prize drawings on firdays (you get tickets if you're working/done with your 5-a-day when the tardy bell rings). The prize "box" is CYLINDRICAL!!
4. Guess she likes smelly breath, she won't allow gum chewing in her class (which is the period directly after lunch.)
So I'm here, thinking "Do I really want to be taught math by such an illogical person?"

That kind of a coincidence.  My algebra teacher is a huge fan of cartoons like The Simpsons and Family Guy.  He tends to talk about them once in a while, which is kind of amusing.

My calculus teacher is an enormous Star Wars fan. He's amusing in general because he looks old but acts half his age (30-something).

Small towns in Colorado, and anywhere else for that matter, amuse me.  My favorite small town is Buena Vista, Colorado.  This is mostly because of K's, an exclusive ice cream shop that makes the greatest strawberry shake ever, in my opinion.

Didn't Luigison once say he was going to put Mario magnets on his teaching board?  If he didn't, then I'm going to sound pretty dumb. ^___^

Arrgh.  I there should be a place in the profile summary for an about me paragraph or if the search worked I'd link you to other places I'd answer the same questions.

Anyway, I teach high school 10th trrough 12th grade science.  Physics, chemistry, Earth, and physical science.

Edit:  Right now I'm taking the first semester (ends mid Jan) off to take care of Hannah (and my wife).

It's from #tmk. I said I should be the Grammar Nazi once. Then Bird Person said that if I was the Grammar Nazi, then he'd be Grammar Hitler. Anyway, I'm still waiting for Grammar Bowser to kidnap me.
