Title: Astro Empires
Post by: Lizard Dude on February 15, 2009, 06:59:10 PM
Because of tales of the whereabouts of a friend, I'm currently checking out Astro Empires (http://www.astroempires.com).

Join me if you want. My homeworld Lizaria is located in the galaxy Fenix-56, Region 83, System 21, Astro 41.

I only expected to sign up for one space-based MMO today, but I don't have to download a 600+ MB client to play this one, so I'll go ahead and try this out.

EDIT: Base location removed for reasons I'm not at liberty to discuss right now.

After less than one day of playing Astro Empires I've discovered a few things:

1. This game is overwhelmingly British.
2. I hate guilds that try to recruit players.
3. I really hate player names with guild names in front of them encapsulated by brackets.

Pretty fun, though. If I thought other TMK people were going to play, I'd form a TMK guild once my economy reaches 20, but...

I might join this if I decide to become a MONSTER NERD.

I actually made an account but then had the same revelation as Glorb.

I used to play this game with my Uncle, but he stopped playing, and ever since then, I've lost interest. Not to mention you practically need to be in a guild to get people to stop attacking you, and the guildmates get really [annoy]ed if you aren't on top of things. (What do you MEAN you haven't got x fleet yet?)

Oh god I started one. Worst part is, I'm way over my head and have no idea what anything does.

Okay, guys, I'm at economy 20. I want to say the TMK guild name (if I do end up making a guild) should be "wheres dezzer," but we did that before (http://themushroomkingdom.net/board/index.php?topic=6428.0) in another game (http://www.kingdomofloathing.com/). Anyone have a better idea? (I already rejected "The Mushroom Empire" as well.)

(Regarding that thread I linked...KoL has changed so much since 2006, the date of the last post. Much of the game has been given a complete overhaul, and with all the content updates we've had in the last few months, there's now effectively something for everyone - including a functional multiplayer dungeon!)

(EDIT: But they haven't changed the Bat Cave quest at all, aside from giving the Boss Bat some bodyguards that drop craploads of Meat.)

The Flood

It has the fungus theme and the space theme.

I enjoy this game quite a bit, and just started a new account on Fenix. As for a guild name...
I don't know. I kind of liked how Fifth suggested Shroobs.

Beta-42, Region 33, System 81, Astro 22.

Should I have started in Fenix? Bah...

Okay, so I'm on day three. Some thoughts:

1. About ten minutes after starting, I got a message from a guild leader that was basically, "Hey, you seem pretty cool, come join our guild, or maybe not, it's all good." Ten minutes after that, I got something along the lines of "WE ARE THE STROGINOFF WE ARE A PROUD RACE OF WARRIOR ALIENS WE WISH TO ASSIMILATE YOU INTO OUR BORG" or some such.

2. I'm playing AE now the way I usually play startegy games like Alpha Centauri: rushing to build lots of shiny new technology and buildings, and totally neglecting combat-related stuff. Also, I have yet to build a second base.

3. Our guild should totally be called Team Glorb.

OK, so, WarpRattler apparently isn't going to make a guild, so I'm going to make one. I need more name suggestions.

I just started a Fenix account. F56:36:38:21.

Well, guys, I'm part of a guild now. You'll have to create Team Glorb without me.

(I've found that I really like this game. I'm to the point where buildings and research take over a day to finish, so I can just queue up some stuff and not worry for a while while I'm busy with life and real games.)

I just started a new guild: Black Mesa Science Team (http://fenix.astroempires.com/guild.aspx?guild=2129). Join plz kthx.

I didn't really want to make a guild anyway.

So, I've just come across the reason why Astro Empires can ultimately fail to remain fun in the end: there are no real restrictions on attacking other players. By this I mean that in the most extreme case, a player who joined on day one can attack a player whose account isn't even a day old. (The whole "Fleet movements from F00-59 to F60-69 are not allowed until 15-03-2009" thing, to use the current "limit," doesn't count because it's possible for a player to start in one of the F6- galaxies on the 15th and be completely defenseless when players from higher galaxies start pouring in, and the limited amount of time they give isn't going to be enough to build a sufficient defense.)

The reason this has come up is because I just got a message from a day-one player (he's also 10.65 levels higher than I am, and probably has multiple fleets of tens or even hundreds of thousands of units to send at my budding fleet of 1730) saying that his (day-one) guild was going to slaughter everyone in our guild except the first five to confirm they would act as spies. (Keep in mind that none of the players in our guild have accounts older than a month.) Now, I know this game is all about PvP, but you'd think there would be level bounds for attackers or something so that having signed up for the game months earlier isn't an utterly unstoppable and unavoidable advantage.

All I know is that if my base gets decimated by some punk who started playing back in November because of this, I'm not logging in again - though it's not like I'll really have a choice in the matter, since I won't be able to do anything whatsoever for some time if my base is occupied.

EDIT: The slashed-out parts of this post are wrong. Apparently there are level bounds (in which players cannot attack other players that are ten levels lower) and the guy who sent this message to everyone in my guild didn't realize this.

I got a message from someone saying that his guild recruits by force and he'd start attacking my bases if I didn't join in two days. Thing is, there's like eight people in his guild, and I've been pouring cash into defenses on all of my bases, so I just went right ahead and started my own guild.

To Glorb:

Fight Scatter's fleet or die.

Eh wot?

EDIT: Oh, yay, overpowering weaker players FTW. Well, if all my crap gets destroyed, rest assured I have an unbeatable contingency plan: ragequit.

So, guys, guess who probably won't be playing Astro Empires anymore?

I got a message from the game early this morning telling me that I was using a shared IP and if this continues, my account will be suspended. It's because of my satellite connection, which handles dynamic IPs differently from other providers or something, and I can't do anything to change this except upgrade my account and request shared IP permissions - not an option, so I can either keep playing and hope I don't get suspended, or just stop playing.

You considered a proxy like PHProxy?

It lets me get around a ban I have on another forum. No, I didn't do anything wrong on that forum. I just have a IP of someone who did do something wrong.

My friend once got banned from Ogame for a year for the exact same reason...

That's bullcrap, for two reasons:

1) You probably will get banned, since a guy on my Beta guild got banned a couple days after he got the notice. So if that's the case, aarr.

2) Now I won't get to pwn Warp on my roaring rampage of revenge anymore.

(Hey guys, I'm still not banned. I suspect it was actually from when I used a proxy to play one day rather than because of my home connection.)

GLORB LOOK HERE:

My guild underwent a schism yesterday, with some members merging with Dark Squadron (a guild we'd been at war with for weeks) and some being stranded. I'm split between these groups, with a message back to the leader of the stranded (who got me started in the guild and helped me a lot, including trying to defeat you - which, by the way, will probably be happening very soon unless you answer yes to this) probably on Monday. However, I'm thinking since BM*ST doesn't have any real affiliation with the FF...if Scatter thinks it's a good idea, could we join?

If you mean join BMST, yeah, that'd actually be great. We barely meet the definition of guild anyway, and the one guild we're allied with seemed to disappear as soon as we teamed up, so new members would be super appreciated.

Heh...well, interestingly enough, they already joined Dark Squadron, and I just joined after finding this out. However, he did say they were open to the idea at the time. Anyway, I'll honor my word and not attack you (and I'd appreciate if I didn't have to decimate the fleets sitting on Ocestya and Balis).

Eh, it's cool. I'll withdraw my fleets and end my occupation tomorrow (I'd still like to milk the last few credits out of the whole deal).

Hey, I've said before, the greatest weapon in my arsenal is ragequitting. I'm not paying to play, so I'm not investing anything more than my time in this. Who knows, maybe my next move'll be to delete all my bases and quit?

EDIT: Alright, screw this, it's Disbanding Time. I need a new MMO.

This might be a good time to bring up RuneScape, if you can deal with the socialism and the incessant whining of the 9 year-olds (but that last part is a factor in every MMO).
Title: Re: Astro Empires

RuneScape? Incessant whining of nine-year-olds in every MMO? Turtlekid must be high, drunk, dumber than usual, or any combination thereof.

Try Kingdom of Loathing.
- No nine-year-olds.
- Its free-to-play model is much better than basically all of these other browser-based MMOs; donating $10 gets you a Mr. Accessory, which you can use as a +15 to all stats accessory, trade in at Mr. Store for neato burrito stuff like the Item of the Month, or sell in the mall for about 4.7 million Meat, which would be enough to let you get one of several older IotMs that have gone down in mall price rather than going up. Furthermore, you don't have to spend any real-life money to get these items; if you're dedicated enough, you can easily farm enough Meat in a month to buy a Mr. A in the mall. Last thing: unless you plan on being a speedrunner, you don't actually need any Mr. Store items. (Not stopping me from having a bunch of them, though, only about half of which I actually donated for - but then, I plan on attempting speedruns once I finish my current set of Hardcore runs [in which you have almost no interaction with other players - they can still do stuff like TP your house or throw pies at you, but you can't trade items, receive buffs, or acquire items from the mall - and no access whatsoever to most items from previous runs; specifically, I'm doing my last Bad Moon run, which is Hardcore plus no skills whatsoever from previous lifetimes, all of your familiars locked away, no ten-leaf clovers, and special adventures that don't appear in any other type of run to offset some of these problems]. Long parenthetical.) You used to need a Mr. Accessory or Mr. Store item in your inventory (or a Mr. Store familiar in your terrarium, or a Mr. Store skillbook on your bookshelf) at rollover (10:30 to ~11:00 Sun-Fri, 10:30 to whenever on Saturdays - all times Central Deezer Time) once to make your account permanent, but a few months ago, they removed that restriction, so all accounts live forever.
- KoL's wiki doesn't have any articles that look like they was typed up by twelve-year-olds.
- The content is hilarious, and the game part of the game is really fun to play now (unlike a few years back, when there wasn't an ascension game and a lot of the game mechanics were pretty awful).
