Author Topic: The Valve Surprise  (Read 11830 times)

« on: June 07, 2010, 08:12:10 PM »
As you may know, Valve cancelled their E3 Portal 2 event to replace it with a "surprise". What will it be?

I hope beyond hope that it will be the announcement of L4D3, to be released this holiday season, just to see the L4D2 rage eclipsed thousandfold.

Gabe Newell has stated it is not Ep. 3.

My true guesses: L4D DLC or reveal of a new "Meet the..." vid.

Possibility: new IP?

There's a very slim chance it could be Steam on Linux.

Maaaaybe it'll be something Portal 2-related that they haven't announced yet, and them canceling the event was a trick.

Or maybe Gabe saying it isn't Episode Three is only partially true, and it'll be something else along with that.

They're skipping Portal 2 and going straight to Portal 3. Either that, or

It was such a shame when we did see some footage of Duke Nukem Forever after it was cancelled, because it actually looked interesting. Stuff I hadn't really seen before (but then, I haven't played the earlier games in the series, so I don't know if Duke flipped off his enemies in the past).

Anyway, maybe it's Freeman Sports, showing us that sports can be fun without having Mario in them. With the SMOD mod thrown in for good measure.
You didn't say wot wot.

I bet they've made a real portal-making machine and will use it to enter the stage, and then announce that one will be bundled with each copy of Portal 2.

Then they'll start making portals underneath everyone's seats, sending them all over the convention.

I don't really have any new ideas other than those already posted, so out of the ones in this thread, I'd most like to see a new Meet The vid and/or a new Valve game with all Valve properties.

I'm in a pretty 50/50 split between hoping for a new IP, or something so big in the Engineer update they need to show it at E3 (octopus gun!!!).

I haven't been following Valve, but Portal 2 in 3D with Natal/Move controls?

VALVE ANNOUNCES MAKING GAMES IS HARD

June 9, 2010 — Aperture Science, doing business as Aperture Laboratories LLC, in partnership with Valve today announced the successful completion of an ethics-review-panel-supervised release date restructuring process. Portal 2, the sequel to the ground-breaking title that earned over 30 Game of the Year awards despite missing its original ship date, is now targeted for a 2011 release.

Representatives from both companies acknowledged that public safety concerns factored into the decision. They went on to say that even though Portal 2 will arrive slightly later than planned, all life on earth won’t instantaneously stop as every molecule in your body explodes at the speed of light, which is what would happen should a rip ever appear in the fabric of Valve Time.

“Also, the game will be even better,” they added, missing an historic opportunity to create the first product delay press release to mention that a product is being delayed to make it worse.

To ask questions about how close we all came to dying, or to ask futile questions about the previously announced E3 ***PORTAL-2-THEMED-FOR-GOD’S SAKE*** surprise or, less futilely, to schedule an appointment to attend a Portal 2 screening at the Valve booth during E3, please contact Valve’s delegate to the EU’s Valve Time Studies Group, Doug Lombardi.

Hey, I just tells it likes it is. Any time Valve does anything people can't help but hype it to hell and back as The Next Big Game, and it only is about %20 percent of the time. So chances are, it's going to be the TF2 Engie update, or some major new stuff for L4D2.

Valve to Deliver Blockbuster Sequel With Steamworks Support

June 15, 2010 - Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises and leading technologies, today announced that it will deliver Portal 2 on the PlayStation 3 platform simultaneously with previously announced platforms. The PlayStation 3 version of Portal 2 will be the only console version to include Steamworks.

"When the PlayStation 3 was introduced, I was the one of the platform's biggest critics," said Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve. "However, Sony Computer Entertainment has proved that the PlayStation 3 is the most open platform of all the current generation consoles and has worked extremely hard to make the platform the most desirable for consumers and developers. As such, we are delighted to announce Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 and believe the Steamworks support included will make it the best console version of the game."

Portal 2 is the sequel to the title named "Game of the Year" 2007 by over 30 publications around the world. Portal 2 promises to break new ground in next generation gaming by expanding the award-winning recipe of innovative gameplay, immersive story, and creative inclusion of music while also introducing multiplayer co-op game modes.

On the PlayStation 3 Portal 2 will be supported by Steamworks, a complete suite of game features and services including auto updates, community features, downloadable content, and more. Previously deployed on the PC and the Mac, Valve's Steamworks development platform will make it possible to deliver the higher level of service gamers have come to expect.

"Valve is one of the industry's leading studios and Portal is one of the most innovative properties launched in the past 10 years," said Rob Dyer, senior vice president of publisher relations at Sony Computer Entertainment America. "Valve's decision to bring Portal 2 to the PlayStation 3 with Steamworks support is incredible validation of the power and openness and momentum of PlayStation 3."

Portal 2 is targeted for launch in 2011 on the PlayStation 3, PC, Mac and Xbox 360 platforms.

HYES.

Now I can play Portal but without the restrictions of turning all the graphics and effects to the bare minimum settings.

Incidentally, when Gabe says "most open platform," he's probably referring to the fact that Microsoft has ridiculous requirements even to get things like patches distributed through Xbox Live. See: Left 4 Dead Survival Pack, where Valve practically had to fight with Microsoft to get it to be distributed for free rather than it being monetized.

This Potato Sack thing is ****ing me off, because even my dad's high-speed connection can't handle five or six programs updating at once, and I don't think it's worth it just so a couple of weird jokes can up in show in games I don't play anymore.

A graphics card. Your computer is using your processor for graphics, which isn't good enough for higher end games.
