I have met alot of mario fans who dispise sonic like he killed their mother. Why is this? I like sonic and I'm the biggest mario fan in my huge school.

Personally, I think both Sonic and Mario are great games. Also, ever since the infamous death of the Dreamcast back in 2001, Sonic games have been on Nintendo systems (as well as the PS2 and Xbox). This means that, theoretically, there could be a Mario/Sonic team-up game! AWESOME!

Mostly it's probably just them playing the part of "person who likes Mario so much that he/she hates his old rival, Sonic". A smaller number of gamers probably don't like the games because Sonic isn't their kind of game and they can't help how they feel. And some people make up a kind of "Other" category that acts as a safety net for my argument in case someone points out a group(s) of people I have neglected to mention.
Personally, I like classic Sonic games more than old Mario ones (although I do like them), and like the newer Mario games (SM64 and SMS) more than the newer, 3D Sonic games (Of which I don't care for at all).
Edit: I wasn't being an equal opportunity pronoun user.

When I was little, my grandma's next door neighbgor had Sega. We used to play all o fhte Sonic games, and I loved them. It seemed quite similar to mario to me, just more... advanced than SMB. I never hated the games, but I never really started playing the 3D Sonic games, I was just more into the Nintendo scene when the N64 was out.When eventually the Dreamcast came out, I didn't have the money nor the desire to get one. I was thus out of the loop for Sonic Games, and never really got into the newer Sonic.

I like sonic! I used to watch the cartoons all the time. I actually liked the cartoons more than the game. Strange, huh?

I like Sonic more than Mario, that's for sure. I'd much rather have one of the Sonic Adventure titles or Sonic Heroes than Super Mario 64.

Yoshi55 hated Sonic, but got banned for FORCING people to agree with his topics.

I don't think yoshi55 got banned because when someone gets banned and you click on their name, at the top bar it would say banned by DZ or MB or any otherf staff member initials.

No, mario2_gold, that is inaccurate.
If a member got banned, then his CT (Custom Title) would say BANNED.
Besides, it was fate that he would get banned.
He did stuff that breaks the rules.

I used to not like Sonic, now I'm pretty well indifferent.

I don't hate Sonic. However, his recent games were highly disappointing and rather boring.

The Sonic games were created basically for two resons: a) to establish both a mascot and a "primary franchise" for Sega, and b) because all their original Sonic designs sucked big time. I mean, seriously, Sonic was first going to be a creepy big-mustached dude, then a bulldog, then a pengiun, then a panda, then a rabbit. In the end, they chose a hedgehog because everyone knows the majority of hedgehogs are blue and cpabable of reaching speeds over Mach 3.

Mario and Sonic, IMO, are like lasanga and potato salad. Both equally good, but together, oh so awesome. Most of my free time is spent trying to come up with the best plot for my upcoming "novel" which I have yet to rewrite. 8P
Anyways, they're both good, and I like him. Who knows? Maybe he'll be the character that Miyamoto said will be fighting along Mario in the next game...hmm...nah!

I don't know if Sega or Miyamoto would want that to happen. Maybe they should stay in their own games, Sonic in the Mushroom Kingdom sounds... not right.

Something about Sonic in an RPG seems...not right. I think the only game I could possibly see Mario and Sonic coexisting in would be a fighting game, though I don't want third party characters in Super Smash Bros. Ever.

I've enjoyed both Mario and Sonic. I used to watch the old Sonic cartoons a lot when they were on Toon Disney. However, Sonic didn't adapt to the 3D realm as well as Mario. Some of the recent games of that franchise are decent, but they don't live up to their 2D predecessors.

Sonic, the guy (or hedgehog, whatever) just bugs me. Why? Because of his constantly cocky attitude, and how he's always like: "Haha, yeah. That's right Tails, I AM cool, and I make cool comments all the time, and Eggman's fat! *wink and thumbs up*" He's just annoying! The complete opposite of Mario. Tails gets on my nerves as well, but that's just because of his high-pitched voice in the cartoon. What happened to his awesome british-sounding dull kind of voice??! "Sonic, we're losing altitude!" I loved it when he said that in Sonic Adventures.....
So what I'm saying, is, I don't like Sonic as a hedgehog, but I think his games are pretty fun (some, any way)...... and Tails should have his old voice back.

I think a lot of the hate stems from the SNES-Genesis days, when fierce loyalties to each system were around. It was like if you had a Sega, you were supposed to love Sonic and hate Mario, and vice versa on the SNES.
Sonic games are pretty good, but Shadow the Hedgehog... not even cool. Think about it, a Sonic game with guns?

In my opinion, it woulda been better, had it been an actual shooter. I mean, it's really just that: a Sonic game with guns. Guns + Sonic ripoff + going really really fast = poo. However, Guns + Sonic ripoff + lots of enemies + slower pace (but fast action) = radical. Can't argue with the math.

I don't hate Sonic, but I just don't play his games anymore. Mario seemed to connect to me more, but I used to love Sonic when I was a young boy. As a matter of fact, I got Sonic Advance for one Easter and i played it a lot during that time, but now (and probably forever), Mario and his brother are my best friends. It's very interesting how intrests change as people grow up.

I started out hating Sonic and I eventually got over it.
It all started back in the Nintendo versus Sega wars. I hang on fiercely to Mario franchises, hating Sonic and Sega for no reason at all.
When I went over to my cousins' house, they only had Sega. Since I'd go catatonic without video games at the time, I just watched. They were playing Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and I noticed a cute orange fox trailing behind. Kept telling whoever was controlling Sonic to slow up and let -her- catch up.
Yeah, at the time I thought Tails was female.
Whenever I wanted to play 2P, the game stayed in single-player mode (because to go multiplayer would be useless, I against someone who had played the game for probably six months). Naturally, I was always left 20 screens behind, constantly shouting "Wait for me!"
While I maintained that I hated Sonic, I loved Tails. Thought "she" was the cutest thing out there.
My friend brought over a GamePro magazine one day. I looked through it, didn't see anything interesting except stuff for other consoles (no good Super Nintendo games coming up? What a gyp). The one thing I did see that looked interesting - Ecco the Dolphin - looked to be the best thing ever. I read to find out what system it'd come out for, because it'd be great if it came out for Super Nintendo - it said Sega Genesis. I had to re-read that a few times, not believing that it would never come out for the Super NES. After my hopes were crushed, I was in tears - but I vowed one day I'd play that game one way or another.
A few months later, my friend brings over a CD with a couple games on it. One is Comix Zone, the other is... Ecco the Dolphin. I immediately threw Ecco into the CD drive, exclaiming that I've heard of it but never thought I'd be able to play it, or at least not this soon. At some point I praised it for coming out to PC. Started it, saw it was made by Sega, and thought "well... okay... one franchise that I like Sega for". Once I started Ecco, you wouldn't see me for another few weeks - played that thing through on the easiest difficulty (which was still a bit hard at some points), enjoying it all the way. I especially enjoyed the cutscenes, felt concern for Ecco, so I was happy when Ecco finally blew up the Queen Vortex.
Tried a little of Comix Zone and thought it was interesting (paper airplane attack! Various comic-book sayings as a fight progressed!), but never got past the second level.
After a while the CD got lost, and I never saw it again.
Since I liked Ecco, I decided one day to bite the bullet and watch the Adventures of Sonic cartoon (not Sonic SatAM). Tails's high-pitched voice further added to my belief that he was a she. I didn't quite know what to make of the cartoon - I just watched it for Tails. I couldn't have cared less about Sonic.
One day, I was casually browsing eBay, looking up rare stuff, and there I saw it - Ecco the Dolphin, PC version, mint condition, no bids (so I could do Buy It Now with no fuss). Perfect opportunity, and perhaps the last chance I'd ever have to get it, so I went for it. Arrived a week after, and I was happy.
Some time later I hear that Sega's going out of the console race and possibly making games for Nintendo's upcoming console, then known as "Dolphin". Mario and Sonic together at last, thought I'd never see the day. Because of this, I thought "well, Sonic's on Nintendo now... might as well give them a chance now that the feud's over".
Was introduced to Sonic SatAM shortly thereafter and loved it. Got Sonic Mega Collection for GameCube, played it mostly for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 which I loved (more for Tails and the overall better control than anything else). By this time I knew Tails was male, through websites and by realizing his real name was Miles Prower.
So it took the end of a war before I forgave Sonic and Sega, though as you can see, I gave Ecco a chance beforehand (because it looked so awesome that I was willing to look past it being made by Sega, otherwise I would have dismissed it). In general I don't care for the high speed of the Sonic series because there's usually obstacles I have a split-second to respond to thanks to not being able to see them far away in advance. I like high speed, but I like a chance to stay at that high speed instead of crashing into something every few seconds.
Despite this, Sonic Mega Collection is one of my favorite GameCube games, more for its excellent presentation than the games themselves. I enjoy it for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the great menus, the music for the menus (especially Extras/Options), the very high-resolution images and full manuals and everything, and the "Sonic Firsts" comic (most of the actual Sonic comic covers I don't care for, but #46 I go wild for because of Geoffrey St. John). They just went wild with the space afforded to them, and it looks very polished.
Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future for Dreamcast and PS2 though... from screenshots it looked beautiful. When actually playing it, it's still beautiful. The actual game's disappointing, but the visuals make up for part of it.
Sonic I think is okay game-wise, Sonic SatAM is great (I liked them more than the Super Mario cartoons), but Ecco I have a deep fondness for.

I forgot about the Sonic comics! In fact, I recently found in my closet an old Archie Comics Sonic book and a Sonic SatAM VHS tape! I've the DVD, though, now, so I don't need it. But still, the comics brought back some memories.

I love Super Mario with all my heart, yet I really like Sonic the Hedgehog as well! I really liked him ever since his first game ever!
Despite the fact I loved Nintendo games all my life, and I used to ignore what SEGA offered...

aaahhhh Sonic my first game ive ever played. Infact I dident even know about Mario intil a year after that. So far I have Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic Spinball, Sonic Adventure (gamecube) and Sonic Mega Collection. I used to be a Sonic fan for about 4 years. But then I got a n64 and became a Nintendo fan from then to now. I prety much collect alot of Nintendo stuff now. I have atleast 80 games that they made O_o

Why does he bug other people? Probably because he used to be the direct competitor to Mario. Why does he bug me? Because in videogames (and pretty much anything else), when put on a big show about being cool, it backfires. The punk music, the human world/Sonic world mergings, the swearing... He just needs to pull over and change the air in his head. I mean, the game (older ones, mostly) are okay, but... look at Mario. He's just cool because he doesn't try to be. Not to get all psychological, but I think people enjoy cool things when they decide for themselves if it's cool--not if someone else tells tries to make them think it is (and besides, the word "cool" is always, by definition, an opinion)

Well, during the Nintendo and Sega wars, I despised Sonic simply because he was a mascot for the Nintendo's rival system. That was reason enough.
When I played a little of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, that idea was reinforced because the game was so fast compared to Mario that I couldn't keep up. I was Player 2 as Tails, but because whoever was playing Player 1 was an expert, I was always left 20 screens behind.
I did like Tails though. Had nothing against him.
Years later, I decided to watch the Sonic SatAM cartoon and found that it blew the Super Mario World cartoon out of the water (my previous favorite merely for it being a Mario cartoon, although they always screwed up Yoshi). Sonic SatAM just had more depth to it, more seriousness, better-looking characters.
As soon as I heard a Sonic game would appear on a Nintendo console (back when GameCube was still known as "Dolphin"), I thought "the war is over at last, I can finally experience what I've been missing all these years." Snatched up Sonic Mega Collection for GameCube when it came out, and found out the Sonic games weren't half bad.
What hasn't changed in all those years is that I still think Sonic's a bit pretentious. If he'd just knock off the cool guy attitute, I might like him more. So I always play as Tails when given the chance.

I've always had an interest in Sonic. He's always seemed quite appealing. As I believe a user said a short while ago, his attitude is a bit of a downside to his personality. He seems a bit self indulgent. I've always preferred Mario, as back in '85 when I was about 16, I bought an NES and the first game I had for it was Super Mario Bros. The first home video game I ever played (obviously, I had before that played games like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong in the arcade). And I like his mustache. That's reason enough.
As I said, I do like Sonic. I like it's fast pace and it's general story, though as I stated, I do quite prefer Mario.

Well, this is weird, but my first system I ever got was a Genesis. I was 4 or 5. I liked video games, but not Nintendo in particular. Anyway, I didn't have a game system or handheld at the time so my neighbor let me borrow his. My dad never hooked it up, and thank God he didn't either. So we gave it back. Anyway, so I later got into Mario, blah, blah, blah. Anyway, go 10 years into the future and you'll see me playing the original Sonic on the Wii. Yea, I downloaded it. I love it too. The music sometimes...erm, is better than Mario. The platforming is kinda hard, but Mario has the better tight controls and everything.

I agree. One thing that I found strange was that in one post Glorb made a while back in that "Yoshi's Voice" (A.K.A. The seven year bump) thread, he said that he never played a Mario game before.

Actually, there's Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games. It's for the Wii and the Nintendo DS. It looks awwwwwsome!
