Well, this was a hard desicision for me, but though SMW was great SMW2:Yoshi's Island was even greater (in my opinion). I just loved every bit of it from taking control of the Yoshis, seeing a whole new army of enemies that inhabited Bowser's army and to taking a  glimpse into the Mario Bros past.

I voted SMW1, because of the personal memories involved with it.

SMW1 by a very close margin.  As far as level design, it's a toss-up.  Yoshi's Island wins hands-down when it comes to bosses.  SMW1 wins when it comes to cool secret levels (the complex overworld map, plus star world and special).  In the end SMW1 takes the prize because of personal memories.

Super Mario World 2, in almost every category I can think of.

SMW2 has THE best level design I've ever seen in any platform game I've played. 2D or 3D. Especially when you play for 100% on every level. Not knocking on SMW1, as it had great levels also, but SMW2's are just brilliant. I also like SMW2's graphic style a bit more. I mean, I know it came out a lot later, but still. I have also perfect cleared (96 goals) SMW1 in about 2 hours 10 minutes -- in one sitting. SMW2 takes me a LOT longer to clear, even just speed running without regard to score.

One thing I do like more about SMW1 is its level select screen. My sole gripe with YI is that it's quite a bit linear. You have to play 48 levels in the same order every time you beat it. SMW1 has literally dozens of paths you can take to beat the game.

I can't help but pass a suspicious eye over those of you breaking this down into categories, making your taste look like a mathematical formula.  True love speaks from the heart, and I voted SMW.

I view EVERYTHING as a mathematical formula. Including love. Which is why I have an incredibly difficult time truly loving things. Or doing things that don't follow algorhythms.

Ahem. But I digress. If we're going by that criterion, SMW2 was just more fun in my eyes. I mean, yea, there's nostalgia factor working for SMW1, but I just remember back to playing SMW2 more, because I had so much fun with it.

This is like choosing which child is your favorite.

super mario world is great because it gives you the freedom of being mario and riding yoshi. there are more levels than yoshis island. it also has alot of power ups, but boss fights and levels arent as long because you can die easier than in yoshis island. the mario floating away in a bubble was a great idea. there could be harder and longer boss fights because you dont die as easily. and you dont have to be extremely causious. in super mario world you have too be causious because you die in from being hit once or twice. and your rushed because of the time feature. you cant search for coins, items and yoshi eggs because you dont want to die. so my vote goes to yoshis island it lacks some things in super mario world but still is better that SMW.

Hehe.  This reminds me of a character I'm fond of... but I'm not sure which.  Wait, I got it!

I would have to say that Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is the best game because the storyline is better than the usual kidnapping of the Princess, the bossed are a lot funner, and you don't automaticly die when you run into an enemy.

lol, yeah, YI is pretty much the only game that could get me both laughing and cussing at the bosses. At the same time.

Still, there's that special something about SMW that keeps pulling me back. I just can't decide. I like YI's original gameplay, and SMW's SMB/SMB3-esque gameplay.

i do have to agree. the classic mario games (the 2d ones where you jump on goombas and get power ups like mushrooms and fire plant) are more addicting than most other mario games like yoshis island. im not sure why.

I have always liked SMW2 and SMB 1 & 3 the most but SMW is okay. I desbise SMB2 it isn't even a game with a true Mario engine. Just some crappy Japanese game called doki doki panic with Mario Charachters. Nintend was mean and prejudice when they thought that the "real" SMB2 was too hard and that we needed a SMB2 U.S. version. I mean, What kind of enemy is wart or whatever his name is. Most people say that the rescue peach from Bowser is old, but without it, mario action games are nothing. Except for YI. But you, were fighting baby bowser, so that realy doesn't count.

Yoshi's Island. The levels were great. The crayon drawing graphics were awesome. But I think I love it because the bad guys were so imaginative.
The whole game seemed more...whimsical, I guess.

The first one.

Hard descision, but the first one wins by a hair.  YI was fun and different, but SMW was the first Mario game I had ever played.  Yeah, it's hard to beat something that involves a milestone.

Though Yoshi's Island was great, Super Mario World has a special place in my heart that even SMB3 cannot come into.

It's not really fair to compare these two, I think.  They're wildly different types of sidescrollers.

But, if I have to choose it'd be Yoshi's Island.  So beautiful.  It's one of those games I have a really deep emotional connection too.  I have it with SMW, of course, jut not nearly as much.

SMW2, but not by much...like someone else said, it was a lot more whimsical, and had great music and artistic background parallax scrolling.  The boss fights were cool too.

You lose.

Of course it's a true Mario game. Just because its gameplay is different and it has a lot of previously used elements from another game doesn't mean it isn't. It's an integral part of the Mario series, as shown by the fact that enemies from the game appear in subsequent games, like both SMWs.

Well, that statement was made a few months ago (I didn't think my spelling and grammar were that bad!). since then, I have actually started to enjoy SMB2, however, I still don't accept it as a "true" Super Mario Bros. game, even if I do enjoy it. I pretty much consider it as an excellent spin off now.

I'd call it a true Mario game, of course. I wouldn't call it the second game in the Super Mario Bros., series though, no. The Japanese version of SMB2 wins that title.
