General Chat / Color Method

How good are you with color, and color theory?  I got 8.3, with my biggest problem coming from not knowing which color section my mouse cursor was connected with.

Fan Creations / Brain Drippings and Comic pages
« on: July 08, 2011, 12:27:11 PM »
I'm newly trying to get some amount of work from my drawing abilities.  I am mostly working on a comic I hope to publish, print and web, sometime soon, but I'm also fascinated by the incredible amount of Eh designs on shirts, so I'm looking to throw my hat in the ring.  So I thought I'd show some of my work here, to you fellas.  The comic pages are without words because I'm just using the same files I put on my Facebook/deviantArt, and I don't want to have the story up yet.

So, yea, give'm a look, if you will. These are the more recent items I've completed.

Video Game Chat / Enhanced Remakes
« on: May 31, 2011, 01:10:54 PM »
Media heads, and for the purposes of this thread, Game Developers and Publishers have realized that people will buy the same thing multiple times.  Re-releases and ports are an effective means to safely test the waters of interest in a brand or franchise.  After all, development time is minimal, distribution is as simple as making it available to any of the online channels, be it XBLA, PSN, Steam, WiiShop, what have you, and, if successful, may invite a relaunch of the property with a new AAA sized title.

On the...well, it's kind of the same hand.  I guess on a different finger of the hand?  The thumb? Whatever.  Is the Enhanced remake.  You know, those old titles that now have HD on the tail end, if not outright then heavily implied.  These tend to mix the nostalgia of these old games with newer features like online multiplayer, redone graphics, new modes or levels, and the occasional control and balance tweak.  They are a mid-step between the dated of the original game and the expense of a new, massive title.

And then there's the consumer.  We gain the ease of having many of our favorite titles being easily accessible on one device.  While I personally still have every system I own ready to go at any point, I completely understand how that is unreasonable or impossible for most.  Getting those classic games is difficult to find, prohibitively expensive when you do find it, or, while good, not quite worth the hassle. Oh, sure, I very much enjoy Radiant Silvergun, but I'm not shelling out the cash for a Japanese Sega Saturn, plus the $100+ for the incredibly rare game when I can just wait and get it for $10 in a little while.  $10 that, to some extent, will go to the developer, not some dude in California. (And Yes, I know a Japanese Sega Saturn is not necessary and modding a US model is incredibly easy, but it's the only example I could come up with)

What are your thoughts on rereleases and remakes?  Awesome?  Not necessary? Evil money grab? Bitter that you have neither the original nor the means to get the remakes?

And also, what have you bought on more than one console/form?
I have multiple copies of Super Mario Bros. 1 (x3), 2US (x2), 3 (x2), Legend of Zelda (x2), Metroid (x3), Super Mario World (x2), Final Fantasy IV (x3), Gunstar Heroes (x3), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (x2), 3 (x2), 'And Knuckles (x2), Perfect Dark (x2), I sort of count the Street FIghter II games, but that's a weird case, Chu Chu Rocket (x2), Metroid Prime (x2), and more, I'm sure I'm forgetting.

General Chat / Catharsis
« on: May 24, 2011, 12:54:19 AM »
How do you decompress? Blow off steam? Whatever the term, dealing with and releasing feelings.

I tend to draw. Rarely complete items, sometimes I paint, more towards the abstract, or doodle, nothing that I need to be good, because in that state it won't look how I want and whatever I'm dealing with instead turns to aggravation.

Video Game Chat / Tournament/Competitive Play
« on: April 01, 2011, 09:31:57 PM »
I've been on a sort of competitive streak lately. Do you guys have any good tournament stories? How often do you participate? Would any of you be interested in getting a forum tourney going?

For those interested, the "Play to Win" games I tend to gravitate towards are SSBB, Super Turbo, I guess you can count Tetris, and Monday Night Combat.

Video Game Chat / Snoballs Chance Sequel
« on: January 02, 2011, 04:39:47 PM »
Games are pretty chancey. There's no surfire way to tell how games will do. Mediocre, or barely functioning games can get sequals and franchises, while truly phenominal titles sometimes get stuck with cult status, if they're lucky. Even with flocks of ravenous fans begging for more, for one reason or another, it looks like the idea of sequels is dead.

There are games we all found that just struck us as Right. We played it, nay, we absorbed it. The story, the characters, maybe the gameplay or art. And when done, we could only think "More". And we waited, like good little fans. Waited for any little bit of news on our new favorite (hopeful) franchise, word on sequels or DLC or even other games by the developers. And wait. And wait. But more time passing, fewer articles, and most dreaded and all too common nowadays, developers closing their doors. And here we are.

What games do you wish got sequals, but just don't see it happening? Even if it was said that the developers were working on one, but there hasn't been any word for a while, and they dodge the question of when it's supposedly coming.

Personally, I would love to see a new Banjo Kazooie like the first 2, or a new Perfect Dark. Outside Rare love, I'd like some more info on a new Mirror's Edge, and up until a little while ago, I would have said Deus Ex, but it looks like we're getting a decent sequal now.

General Chat / Comic Books
« on: September 03, 2010, 12:21:46 AM »
Comic books, graphic novels, funnies, sequential art.

Personally, I live comics. Reading them, reading about them, enjoying them through games and movies, anything. I stick with Marvel a lot, Spider-Man, Avengers, X-Men, but have grown quite attached to a number of DC's not-gigantic books, like Birds of Prey, done by the fantastic Gail Simone, and Zatanna, written by Paul Dini. I really enjoy the works of John Romita and John Romita Jr., as well as Chris Bachalo, who draws a wonderful Spider-Man, and Klaus Jansen. For Writers, other than Simone and Dini, Greg Pak and Fred van Lente, whom I was introduced through Incredible Hercules, which I can't recommend enough.

Do you read them? Is there a character you really enjoy? A team? Which of the big two (DC or Marvel) do you generally gravitate towards? What about Image and Darkhorse? Anything about the medium that you feel makes it special, unique? Do you enjoy the superhero fare, or do you stick to less mainstream stuff? Do you have a favorite creator(s)?

General Chat / Age limit for crafts?
« on: August 18, 2010, 10:04:07 PM »
This weekend, I'm going to a family reunion. To keep it interesting, since it's yearly, there have been themes the last few, like westerns, Las Vegas/ Candyland, for adults and kids, respectively, and this years is pirates. So, all the food will be kinda pirate-y, people dress up, and there are pirate themed activities for the kids. Sitting here thinking about it, and I thought it would be fun for the kids to make their own pirate flags, with cloth and different felt shapes and stuff.  But I'm not up to date on the family ages, anywhere from 5-14, so I ask you:

When does interest for crafts like this wane in kids? Would the older kids get bored? There are other things planned to keep them entertained, but I thought it might be neat. And that's why I bring it to you.

Video Game Chat / Rock band query
« on: February 05, 2008, 07:01:43 PM »
I'm currently thinking of purchasing Rock Band in the near future.  I'm still deciding on whether or not, and if I do, what version.  But there is something I've noticed when looking at the boxes.  It says that there is a guitar peripheral.  Not Guitar peripherals.  It seems odd to me that a game that uses 2 guitars would only come packaged with a single guitar, but I'd like to be sure.

The White Mushroom House / Tetris DS, please
« on: December 16, 2007, 02:04:24 PM »
I was hoping that there is someone here who is willing to part ways with their copy of Tetris DS.  I didn't realize that it had been discontinued, and I really need it.  I don't know how much you would want for it, but right now, I'm just trying to get it as soon as possible.  I plan on giving it as a gift this week, which may be impossible, but I'm willing to try.  If you have it, and are willing to sell it to me, please get back to me as quickly as possible.

General Chat / Assistance with Homework
« on: December 02, 2007, 09:35:07 PM »
I know that the majority of people here are in school, whether it be high school, college, or still somewhere below that.  Schools, for the most part, always give homework.  And the problem arises, what if you don't understand all of the homework given to you?  You could look online for a quick lesson in the subject, or call a friend, but pages online aren't the most personal and can sometimes be just as hard to understand.  You could call your friend, but let's say that your friend isn't taking the same course, or is as clueless as you.  What's a person to do?  That's what the idea of this thread is for.  I want people to come here and ask their questions, with advice from people who may be able to help.  It can be any subject, from coming up with a thesis for a US History paper, to trying to understand a reaction at equilibrium for a chem test, and any grade as well.  Basically, You set up the question by stating the subject/class/course/etc., to keep confusion to a minimum, and ask in as much detail as seems needed, ask the question.  I won't say that this is going to be the most riveting of conversation pieces, but I hope it becomes helpful.  Also, it would be advised to ask as soon as possible when you need help, so that a suitable answer can be found before the day it is due.

Now, the reasoning behind this isn't completely altruistic, as I'm actually looking for some help.  This is for AP Calculus.    Related rates.  I missed a class last week, and don't fully understand how to set up the problems.  Right out of the book, the question asks
Quote
A spherical balloon is to be deflated so that it's radius decreases at a constant rate of 15 cm/min.  At what rate must air be removed when the radius is 9 cm?
Now the book I'm using gives answers for odd numbered problems, and the answer for this one is 4860pi cm3/min, and I don't understand what to do to get that.  Saying that it's a spherical balloon, I imagine it might have something to do with the volume formula, but I honestly don't know, I only did two practice problems on Thursday during class.  Essentially, what I am asking is, what information do I use, and could someone give me just a hint as to what I should do with the info?  Here's hoping this was a good idea...

Video Game Chat / Summer Game-a-thon 07
« on: June 30, 2007, 03:01:20 PM »
Starting today, the 30th day in June, 2007, I shall start the journey of a lifetime.  I shall go through each and everyone of the video games that I own, and beat it.  By September 6th, I will have either completed over 20 years of games, or failed miserably.

Basically, I want to beat, in some form, every game that I own.  The reason for posting here is that I need your help.  Since for some of these games, it’s been years since the last time I played, I’m going to need some help.  And also, I need other people to know about it if I am to motivate myself to go through all of them.  Otherwise, I might get lazy and not complete the task.  I’m going to list the games that I need to beat, and I will use the site as a sort of continuous checklist, which I will update when I beat a game.  Okay, here’s the list, starting with Nintendo, going to Sega, then Sony. And there you have it, every game that I must beat.  The games with “?” are ones that I don’t know how to consider it beaten, or I don’t know how to make it harder for myself.  Mainly, puzzle games that have no ending I need some suggestions on.  I didn’t include games that I am borrowing from friends, since those aren’t part of MY collection.  I also did not include my DS games, since right now I am without a DS, making that goal impossible to complete.  I will allow any game I get in the next week to be a part of the challenge, so if I find the DS in that time, I will add it, otherwise, no.  As games are beat, I will take a photo proving that I have beaten it, and edit the list with the completed games crossed out.

My basic plan of action is to go through the NES, Genesis, and Gameboy games, as those are generally shorter, while worry about the RPGs until the end, as those take the most time.  All games will be played from the beginning, so no old, partial completions to work off of.  I might have at least one LoZ game going at all times, since those can also be quite time consuming.  Any suggestions or comments are welcome.  I might be forgetting something I wanted to say, but for now, I think this looks good.  Oh, and the spacing is a little off because I originally wrote this in another program, then just copied it over.

General Chat / Checking
« on: October 30, 2006, 02:26:15 PM »
At my job, the professor that I work for pays everyone with regular checks from HSBC.  Normally, I will cash the check within a few days, depending on when he pays us.  I was wondering if checks ever expire, because I've had one check for a little over 2 weeks, and I just found one in a pair of my pants from August 30th that I forgot about.  Other than screwing up my boss' checking account, will the check become useless after a certain amount of time?

I'm uneducated on this since I've only ever had a savings account, and my parents don't know.  Help is appreciated.

Fan Creations / More than the sum of their parts
« on: August 31, 2006, 11:08:01 PM »
I've decided to write a story about Mario.  I normally don't come into the FG&S, not really a fan of the games, and only a few stories I like.  But that's not the point.  The point is, I've had this story bouncing around in my head (or at least parts of it) and I was going to turn it into a comic, but I decided that it would take to long, and I'm not patient enough to draw each panel, so I decided to make a regular story out of it.  I haven't really decided on names or specifics.  I'm writing the story as I go, but I have the basic plot down.

About the story.  It takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom, and a few other places around the main nation.  It involves younger cast, though only about mid 20's for the main cast.  Bowser has become increasingly more ruthless, with less plots to overthrow the kingdom.  What is he planning?  Mario is still working on his skills and powers, and is finding it hard to last in some of the longer fights.  Peach hasn't had to do so much work in all the time she's ruled, and it's starting to show.  Will we find out the real reason Bowser has always wanted to take over the Mushroom Kingdom?

Alright, enough bad foreshadowing.  I'll put up the Prologue and 1st chapter, and see what people think.  Oh, and the original writing has a few swears, though it's only been 1 in the first 5 chapters, and for posting on here, I will edit them.

------------------------------

Prologue

As the smoke settled, both stood, with bated breath as to what the other would try next.
“I have to finish this now, before the whole city is destroyed!”, Mario thought quickly.  “I hope I have enough left on my gloves…”
Bowser knew something was going to happen, tensely waiting for a sign for what to do.  He instantly understood, as Mario began clinking his fingers together frantically, looking for a spark.  With little thought, Bowser let loose a monstrous roar, and began to charge.
“C’mon, c’mon…”  But there was nothing.
Bowser was advancing quickly, and Mario had to think fast.
“I got it!!”, and rapidly clapped his hands.
Tzzt!
Almost automatically, the small spark became an overwhelming blast of heat and fire, aimed directly at Bowser.  As the attack lasted, Mario felt the fatigue begin to pry at him, and the blaze become less focused, more difficult to control.
Mario felt something sharp graze his face, which momentarily made him lose his focus.  The resulting blast from his hands threw him back.  Slightly dazed, he tried to see through the smoke.
A fleeting glimpse of a spiked tail was seen slipping down the pipe.  By the time Mario got up and over to the lip of the warp, Bowser could have been anywhere, maybe millions of miles of piping away.
Panting, bruised, and a little singed, Mario trudged off.  For now, the Mushroom Kingdom was safe, and Mario needed a nap

Chapter 1

“Master Mario!”, a small mushroom retainer squeaked.
Mario rolled over, eyes squint, “Ughh…Wha…?”.
“Master Mario, you must wake up!  It’s nearly 8 o’clock!”, as the pintsized servant swept the covers from the drowsy hero.
Mario grumbled “That’s great, Big Ben, let me know when the clock strikes P.M.”, as he rolled with his back to the window, whose blinds were moved to allow the light to break the dark room.
Puzzeled, “Big Ben, sir?  But my name’s Tad.  Anyway, you don’t want to sleep the day away…-Oh, uh, SIR”, he quickly added, to keep from sounding disrespectful.
“Fine, Fine, I’m up…And drop the ‘sir’ stuff*.  It makes me uncomfortable.”
“Yessir”
Mario rolled over, looked at his watch, hoping it was actually later than 8 A.M., but was disappointed when it said 7:58.
“Oomph, last night was really rough on the ol’ rump…Hey, Tap, d’you know where I can get some aspirin?”
“Uh, yes, you’ve got some in your bathroom…and it’s Tad”, he said, barely heard by Mario.
Tad puttered over to the fine Mahogany door, pushed it completely open, and stepped on a short stool to reach the light switch.  The fluorescent light bounced off the pristine white tiles and the swimming pool-sized tub.
“…Whoa…”
Mario slowly shuffled in, awestruck by the mere size of it.
“D-do I get this all to myself?”, as he gazed at the dome ceiling, and felt the fine marble countertops.
“Heheh, yup, as long as you’re in the castle, this is yours.”
“Heh, sweet.”
“Alright, I’ll leave you to get ready.”, Tad said as he was walking out of the washroom.
Quickly, Mario stopped the little man “Wait, what?  What am I getting ready for?”
“Why, for breakfast with the princess, of course.  The food will be ready in…”checking his pocket watch, “23 minutes.  I’d advise you not to be late.”
Stammering, “Oh, uh, yeah, Okay…”
The bedroom door closed, and Mario was left standing there, in his still burnt overalls, wondering about the breakfast.  For a few months now, Princess Peach has been too busy to have anything more than a quick “Good job”, and now she’s able to have a full meal with him.  Well, I’d better get ready, don’t want to keep her waiting, he thought as he swallowed a few aspirin, and got undressed for a quick shower.  I have got to find out her contractor, as he slid the nacre door shut.

22 ½ minutes later..

Mario walked into the grand dining hall, to see it almost completely void of life.  That is, except for a single small mushroom retainer chef, and Peach at the end of the long table.  Each step against the stone floor echoed through the whole room, causing the two to look up at Mario.
Mario got up to the chair next to Peach, and looked down to her.  She looked up, and smiled.  She looked tired, yet her eyes showed vibrance
“Hello, Mario.  Please, sit, breakfast should be ready in a moment.”
“Okay, thanks.” Sitting down, he looked at Peach.
Are you alright?  You look exhausted.”
“Yeah, I’ll be fine; just been busy.  Bowser keeps springing these attacks, and I’ve been trying to keep the kingdom in one piece.  It’s rather alarming, though, that he’s started to attack innocent civilians.”  She looked down at the table, rubbing her hands together.
“Hm,” looking down at her hands, as well “Yeah, but I think things have calmed down for a while.  Last night, he seemed pretty spent, even before we began to fight.”  Mario knew she wasn’t telling him everything.  She only rubbed her hands when something was truly wrong.  The last time was when Bowser had killed her father 9 years ago, during the first rebellion.
Trying to change the subject, he turns to the redesigned halls.  “I love what you’ve done to the castle.”
“Oh, thanks.  It cost a bundle, but luckily the nation isn’t in too much debt…But if we can find Bowser’s base, we should be able to pull out about even.”
“Yeah, hopefully.  Ooh, the food!  I’m starving.”  Mario exclaimed, as a man with a tray larger than him waddled to the table, exhaled a quick “Bon Appétit“, before hurrying back to the kitchen.
Peach knew the way to Mario’s heart.  She told the chef to cook up a pasta-omelet, one of his personal favorites, and a few more traditional breakfast dishes, including a stack of hotcakes, and a nice fruit salad.
The rest of breakfast was mostly quiet, save for a few “Could you pass the…” and the frantic apologies of Peach upon knocking over the syrup onto the table.
The food was cleared, the table set for the lunch hours, and the two made some minor small talk, before Peach stood up.  Mario shot up, hitting his thighs on the hardwood table.
“Mario, I want to thank you for coming and having breakfast with me.  We don’t get together much, unless the kingdom is in peril”, she said with a sort of half-laugh.
With a smirk, Mario replied “Yeah, I’ve practically had to burn down the First Bank of Toad Town to get your attention lately”
They walked to the main hall, when Peach turned, “Well, I should get back to work.  The Chancellor is going to be rather uppity at me for just having a nice sit-down breakfast”
“Alright.  Can you get away from the Chance’ tomorrow night?  I was hoping to show you some of my master cuisine skills.” Mario boasted, while playfully puffing up his chest, giving a cheesy smile.
“Hahaha, yeah, I think I can.”
She leaned in, hugged Mario, and gave a gentle kiss, before walking up the flight of stairs to the towers, where most of the business went on.
Mario, rather happy with himself, walked out to the courtyard.  Luigi was speaking with Toadworth, both adamantly pointing and exclaiming over the garden on the Southeast corner of the castle grounds.
“Hey there, Luigi.  When did you get here?”, nodding at Toadsworth, who paid little attention to the red clad brother.
“Hi!  Oh, only about 15 minutes ago.  I’ve been discussing with Toadsworth what we could use these hybrid Piranha plants for.” Luigi excitedly bounced.
Rather bored with the garden talk, Mario began to wander away, “Alright, well, I’ll talk to you guys later.”
“Yeah, yeah, okay…” the other two trailed off while admiring the Man-eating lilies.
Hmm, wonder what I should cook up for Peach? and Where could Bowser have gone? were the main two, of the many things, running through his head as he walked into the town.

--------------

Well, that's the end of what I have on the computer right now.  Let me know what you thought, and I'll work on getting the rest of it typed up quickly.

Video Game Chat / Playstation recommendation
« on: August 13, 2006, 02:38:07 PM »
I just got a Playstation from my friend when he came back from Florida.  He "aquired" it from his uncle down in Florida, so there are only a few games, most of which are Tomb Raiders.  I want to know what other games I should add to the collection.  So far I only have
  • Tony Hawks Pro Skater
  • Tomb Raider 1, 2, and Last Revelation
  • Dead in the Water, some boat racing game kinda like Hydro Thunder, though not as good.
  • Army Men Air Attack 2
Note that I want any games you think I should get, in any genre.  Thanks
