Nintendo's 2008 conference has just ended in Japan, where they revealed an upgraded Nintendo DS model called the DSi. Among the new games revealed is the third installment of the Mario & Luigi series, tentatively titled "Mario & Luigi RPG 3." Short gameplay clips can be seen in NCL's DS lineup video (http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n10/conference2008fall/mov/ds.html?n10).
Here are a few stills from the Mario & Luigi RPG 3 footage:

:O :O :O
Correct me if I'm wrong, but is that a PLAYABLE BOWSER I see in the video? All of the evidence seems to point towards it...
-
It would also appear we are getting an updated Mario Paint:

Nintendo somehow got inexplicably awesome and decided not to tell anyone until now. Weird.

Of course they didn't tell anyone. It's in Japan. Japan gets the cool stuff, we don't. Or if we do, it's much later and we probably won't get the same promotional bonuses if any.
Then there was when Metroid Prime got an upgrade in Japan, where it gained a "Hard" mode and speech for scanned objects.
-
Well, PiT didn't exactly blow me a way, so... we'll see (I haven't watched the vids yets, so I'm not going to say too much).
-
:DDDDDDDDDD This is the best news I've heard in a while!
-
Awesome! Nate Bihldorff is going to have a field day.
-
Those enemies in the shell attack screen shot are clearly under the employ of Fawful. :D
-
Those enemies in the shell attack screen shot are clearly under the employ of Fawful. :D
I hope Fawful makes an appearance.
-
Them under his control leads me to think, uh, yeah he is. If he isn't THE main antagonist, he'll at least be a major part of the story.
A clearer shot of said enemies.
-
Whoa, does this mean that Mario and Luigi have separate inventories? And what's that moon-Mushroom meter in the corner?
I wonder what role Bowser will play in this game-- Peach is kidnapped by Fawful and Bowser wants her back?
Or will it be temporary playability, like in PMTTYD?
Also: the Nintendo DS is now the first system to have more than one Mario RPG made specifically for it.
EDIT:
Looks like Mario and Luigi are controlled as normal, but Bowser gets the X and Y buttons.
And Bowser accidentally eats the Mario Bros.
And the plot seems to involve the citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom getting inflicted with a curse or disease that makes them fat.

-
I am possessive of the excitementness!
But wait, will I be able to play this on my original DS or will I need to buy a DSi?
-
Looks like all the DSi stuff is compatible with normal DSes. (I'm assuming that's the case with stuff like Mario Paint anyway, it just won't have camera functionality.)
-
Well, if DS games are compatible with both the original ad DS lite, I would think they'd be compatible with this, too. And the DS lite didn't have any format-exclusive games... they were all just for the DS, not "DS lite" or "DS original." But the camera functionality probably wouldn't be there (but then, Chupperson already said that, didn't he?). I personally will be sticking with my DS lite. I need the GBA slot to Pal Park Pokemon (try saying that ten times fast), and I can't justify having two versions of the same system.
-
Definitely buying it.
-
It would also appear we are getting an updated Mario Paint:

Wait, isn't that the new WarioWare? The one where you can apparently make your own games?
-
Yes it is.
This game already looks better than Partners in Time. Hopefully this is the true sequel we've been waiting for since the GBA classic.
-
Nintendo just got epic again.
-
Yay, new game announcement!
I liked SS better than PiT, but the latter still introduced a lot of good elements I hope they implement in this game (improved sound, new gameplay gimmicks, darker story, etc.) Though, I'd like to see the return of the pseudo-free-roaming map, Bros. Attacks, Mario not looking like he's having a hangover when he's walking, and probably some other stuff I forgot. I really want them to ditch the map on the screen you're not playing on; it makes areas too linear and level-based. Then again, they could always pull it off correctly by allowing the map to scroll freely or some such...
From those screenshots alone, it looks like a sort of combination of the styles of the previous two games. Which leads me to the interesting thought...M&L1 was bright and funny, and M&L2 was more dark and serious, so...could Nintendo be planning to combine both styles in a super-wham-bam-diggity-awesome finisher to the trilogy? Or at least the game that'll make the series a trilogy if they're not going to stop here.
-
I'll have to keep an eye on this. That'll be all.
-
Nice! I'm DEFINITELY going to get this no matter what! Thanks for telling us about this!
-
Question: Why is it always good if Mario games have "darker" stories? Those are always the games that I like less. What Mario games need are off-the-wall settings, not "dark" ones.
-
Agreed. :D I'll be sure to keep an eye on this one. It looks awesome.
-
Well, I'm pretty sure Nintendo won't be finishing the series. It's still a fat cow to milk.
And...HOLY BEJEEZUS!
Are there any Japanese members who can tell us some of the words from the Toad bubble?
-
I think "dark" Mario stories are cool as long as they don't get Sonic at it.
I am excited at all this news. I will get his game, and I still have to get wario land...
(lol@ the people who though that Nintendo was dying)
-
Check out this Youtube Official Video!!!:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6oZsgvxO30
Looks like Fawful at 0:25!!!
Fawful beams seem to destroy Bowser's Castle...
Bowser seems to be a permanant character. Has special attacks.
Nerr-GACK!
-
The only things that worry me on sight at this point are the Bros. Attacks (I really didn't like how they were pretty much the only thing to use if you didn't want a boss battle to take three hours in PiT. Still, with no babies, it could be better) and the being-inside-Bowser thing (already done in PiT, people).
Everything else looks promising. "Cautious pessimism" here, as I said once before.
-
Let's hope the body navigating doesn't end like in PiT... :P
-
What! I was glad when it ended. An entire game involving exploding Bowser's innards sounds lame. Nah, I'm kidding, I understand what you meant. I'm glad they aren't doing "Mario Bros. plus babies plus Wario Bros!!!!!!!!!" That's what you might call... overdoing it.
I don't want to have to buy a DSi, so this being a normal DS game is cool with me. Except Mario & Luigi need L and R which would force me to play it on my old DS. But if the Lite gets a price drop, I might get a new one.
-
Question: Why is it always good if Mario games have "darker" stories? Those are always the games that I like less. What Mario games need are off-the-wall settings, not "dark" ones.
It isn't. That's my opinion, since I like those games more (has anyone beside me actually brought that up when describing positive aspects of the series?).
Speaking of Bowser, how is that much space inside his body? Bowser's only about twice Mario and Luigi's size, at least in this game. Same goes for Bowletta in SS...maybe they just wanted the "going inside something's body" since it was used in both previous games? I've never really been fond of the concept, but I'll have to wait and see how they pull this one off.
-
I think Mario and Luigi are shrunk somehow...(And Peach, from looking at the video)
-
Why is it always good if Mario games have "darker" stories?
I had that idea between "growing out of Mario" (stay with me) and going on to other games. Now I play other games that may or may not be darker than most Mario games, and still appreciate the lighthearted plots of the simpler games. Seriousness and Mario are okay together though, but if every game were like Partners in Time in terms of what happens to The Mushroom Kingdom and how big the threat you must overcome is... that'd be kind of lame.
I really can't get a good prediction for what the heck this game's about. But it looks good. Of course it'll be good.
-
Wait, isn't that the new WarioWare? The one where you can apparently make your own games?
I stand corrected. The layouts are so similar. . . .
-
I still kinda wish they stole my idea. Using Bowser instead of them seems like a wasted opportunity to me. They've already done enough funny things with him. The prospect of this game involving Mario and Luigi being forced to work alongside Wario and Waluigi would've been pure gold (and no BP, my idea never involved the Babies. I was merely pointing out how M&L2 featured a four-character setup, as half-arsed as it was).
-
Well... it is about Mario & Luigi, not "Mario & Luigi & Wario & Waluigi." Besides, such a pair-up is a bit too predictable. Mario pairing up with Bowser feels more interesting, because they've been rivals since the (near) beginning.
They might appear during the game, somehow.
They've already done enough funny things with [Bowser].
Not really. Bowser was mostly possessed or had amnesia in SS, and had a very small role in PiT. According to Nate Bihldorff, villains like Bowser are the most fun to write dialogue for, as they always have the best lines. Wario nor Waluigi aren't really villains, just anti-heroes. So I should be expecting a lot of funny things when Bowser's around.
-

It would, if they hadn't already teamed up in SMRPG and Super Paper Mario.
Now, Bowser playable in a 3-D Mario platformer? Hmm...
-
You may be onto something there.
-
Is it me or does this game remind me SO much of SMRPG? I mean, the SNES-inspired map screen, the re-did Mario & Luigi sprites (Look more...RPG-ish), and Bowser.
I DO like this game so far. Reminds me of SS. Also, a sprite comparison

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Often praised for it's iconic graphics. LOADS of custom styles and edits.
(https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fthemushroomkingdom.net%2Fimages%2Fss%2Fmlpit%2Fss_mlpit_pre05.jpg&hash=20e5c0d8f7f5257d3e868ddf2aa0613c)
Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time. It's sprites are rarely used. Notice how they're smoother and better animated then the SS ones.

Mario and Luigi 3. Looks like a combination of the two, and better represents the artwork. Also more cartoony. (Ironically, Mario looks dopier then Luigi for once)
-
Cool! Can anyone give me a direct link to the video that shows gameplay, please? I can't seem to find it on the website.
EDIT: Thanks!
-
One thing I look forward to in M&L3 is its impressive art style. I felt SS's art style wasn't colorful enough given the GBA's color palette, and PiT's color scheme had an overall dark look. M&L3's colors look the most cheerful. Given that the colors often represent the atmosphere I suppose that M&L3's story won't be as dark as PiT's, but more wackier.
Plus, Toads suddenly becoming fat sounds wackier than say, Toads having their life force sucked out by aliens.

-
At least Mario doesn't flick his nose when he's deciding what tactic to use. :D
-
I can't tell you what I consider some definite pros:
Return of BP, even if not in Bros. Attacks.
Much better style than PiT (though still honestly anywhere near that of SS)
Babies removed.
Babies removed.
Babies removed.
-
Wow! I can't wait for this game. Hoperfully Fawful (and Popple) make an appearance here. Those enemies have that wacky smile and glasses. Just like Fawful.
-
I can't tell you what I consider some definite pros:
Return of BP
Aw geez. Thanks! :D
Babies removed.
Having them around was cool in Partners in Time, but I'm glad they're not making a return. Their presence was important to the freshness of the last game, and having 'em again would be stale.
-
Well, why would they appear again? The only reason they were in PiT (obviously) was because of the time travel gimmick. Now, those babies are back where the belong: Making mariologists' heads explode in sports games.
-
Nobody could sin hard enough to actually deserve to be a Mario spin-off character.
-
Top 5 Points of Interest: (Add or take...)
1. Fawful?
2. Bowser as a major player?
3. Fat Toad Disease
4. Concepts from PiT
5. The Chancellor's Return???(From SMRPG)
-
5. The Chancellor's Return???(From SMRPG)
I was about to just say something about that to... I like how newer games are starting to use old charicters from older games that havent made a apperance in a long time.
I wonder if this is because they can't think of any new charicters to make up of...
-
C-h-a-r-a-c-t-e-r.
-
Toadsworth is somewhat similar to the Chancellor, but it's not that big of a deal.
-
The guy in that screen is not the Chancellor. He doesn't have a robe. By that logic the guy running the Toad Town store in Paper Mario is also the Chancellor.
-
Waluigi expresses why he should be in Mario and Luigi 3:

We can't disagree with that kind of logic.

Classic Waluigi moment!

It appears that Prince Peasly is making a comeback!! Watch this trailer at 0:24 seconds in:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6oZsgvxO30
Does this mean the return of the inhabitants of the Beanbean kingdom? God I hope so. As others have already stated- it does appear that fawful will be back. I hope that cackletta and popple make a comeback as well. The characters of the beanbean kingdom were great!
-
I paused there and zoomed in far, and I can't tell who it is (someone said it might be Fawful) It wasn't good enough quality to tell who exactly that was. Only time will tell.
-
I thought this was already discussed.
THAT'S NOT PRINCE PEASLEY, UNLESS PP HAS:
1. GIANT green eyes.
2. Is ridiculously small compared to the last game.
The only evidence is that SOME people think that's his cloud, but you can't tell.
Actually, it looks neither like PP or Fawful.
-
Yeah like jmbdlazer said, only time will tell. But I really am convinced it's prince peasly, mainly because yes that looks like the could he flew on. Also, that's how big he was in the first game!
and if anyone I seriously don't think it's fawful, those "big green eyes" look like peasly's head to me. But of course, it is HORRIBLE quality and very small, so there's a very high chance that I am wrong about all of this. xD
-
I thought it might be a Lakitu, personally, but there was so little detail I hardly knew what it was except for a white and green blob.
-
Looks like fawful to me.
(https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg362.imageshack.us%2Fimg362%2F7569%2Fml3screenshotyy1.png&hash=3c2008b65a7adc1ad918756a916f10ab) (http://imageshack.us)
-
Peasly rides a winged bean, not a cloud. And that looks more like a flying throw pillow.
-
I thought Peasly did ride a winged throw pillow. But that looks like Fawful to me, too; Peasly might have had a cape, but he wasn't bald.
-
I'll try to draw out the sprite to show how it could be either Peasly or Fawful.
-
Looks like Fawful wearing his headgear to me. I could have wrongness, though.
-
Toadbert confirmed and some random new info:
http://www.mariowiki.com/Mario_%26_Luigi_RPG_3
-
I'm not sure if that's "new" so much as it's some people who decided to look deeper into the trailer than everyone else.
-
Last I checked, the Super Mario Wiki allows speculation.
-
I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I'm just saying that it's not like some new news Nintendo unveiled. Sorry if it sounds antagonistic or anything.
-
I was playing PiT, and I got to Fawful's Bean and Badge. Fawful said, "One day, however, I will try to take over the world again." Perhaps...
-
OLDer then my dead grandmother.

That was the best part of PiT, IMO.

That was a necessary post.

Looks like I started a trend in posting. The Subject Line Trend.

I hope you aren't proud of how you ended that sentence with a preposition.

That is the type of errant pedantry up with which I will not put.

-
Point?
-
This makes me really really happy. PiT was a bit of a disgrace, so this'll be some good relief.
At least Mario doesn't flick his nose when he's deciding what tactic to use. :D
I personally liked the odd dancing in SS. It was so... weird. Totally fit the mood of the game.
-
Yeah! I miss Mario's level up dance! Luigi's could use some improvement, but it wasn't bad.
-
Mario flicking his nose while thinking in PiT was incredible! I wanted to make Baby Mario go away so he would keep doing it!
I don't get why Partners in Time was such a "disgrace." It was a good game. Not like its predecessor in terms of plot, execution, and, being second, originality--but in style, it really built on the foundation Superstar Saga made.
The third game has a lot of room to top PiT though, I guess. I hope it does, and I'm looking forward to it. This isn't really worth noting, but I had this weird delusion in a semi-sleeping state some Sundays ago that it was confirmed that the main villains were both Fawful and Popple who were not teamed up, but being equally destructive in their attempts to achieve some goal before the other. Right now I am awake, and I can see that this sounds really lame.
-
I finished SS, but I never finished PiT. The battle system wasn't fun enough. I liked some elements of the game, but the walking around and the battles were two of the things I didn't.
-
It was a good game. Not like its predecessor in terms of plot, execution, and, being second, originality
Yeah, those are nonessential, alright...
-

You know, I just had a thought: let's assume for a second that the screenshot is Peasley. He might be able to help the Mario Bros, considering he was shrunk down and eaten (see the Pirahna Bean fight, I believe). Maybe he'll be shruken down and eaten again (by Bowser), and he'll have to find the Mario Bros.
-
Umm...okay.
I'm sure everybody thought of this.
-
No offense to Peasley, but I'm still hoping that's Fawful.
"I am waiting like an elevator. I have the commerce. I run Fawful's Bean 'n Badge, but... the day comes coon when Fawful rises again, and then no baby's candy has safety! I am counting chickens before they are even eggs, before the chickens are even chickens. I WILL! HAVE! FURY! I LAUGH AT DEFEAT! I FIGHT WITH RAGE! I HURT YOUR FACES!"
-PiT
You never know...

Sooner then I thought...:D
The only way you could get me to believe that that might be true is if the information came from a reliable Japanese source. And it has to be Japanese or any other culture that doesn't celebrate April Fool's.
-
February 11 is also National Foundation Day (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Foundation_Day) in Japan, though it's hardly an April Fools-like holiday, unless there's something I'm missing.
-
This is very cool, as soon as it comes up for sale I'm off to the stores!
I wonder who else is playable other than Mario, Bowser, and Luigi?
-
Playing as Fawful could be neat.
-
New screens, if anyone's interested. (http://gamekyo.com/newsen29597_mario-luigi-3-new-pictures.html)
(I could've sworn there was another thread discussing this game, but I've got a bad headache and I'm not in the mood to search much more than I already did)
-
(https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gamekyo.com%2FWebmasters%2FImages%2F73911020090113_173917_3_big.jpg&hash=597b62d72c77bd527f3372168f7b6dc1)
Looks like M&L3 will actually use the Touch screen.
-
According to some recent info, Mario and Luigi will be controlled with A and B, and Bowser will be controlled by X and Y.
It also sounds like Mario and Luigi will be stuck in Bowser the whole game...:(
-
I wouldn't be too sure. They haven't (and won't) release screens of the whole game. As far as we know, the inside-Bowser stuff could just last an hour, two tops.
-
Yeah. Mabey Bowser has his own, seperate quest that he's going on at the same time the Bros are having theirs.
-
Here's something I noticed:
(https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gamekyo.com%2FWebmasters%2FImages%2F73911020090113_173917_5_big.jpg&hash=40a2fb3af331587c085b2ed5b0159e57) (http://www.gamekyo.com/images5_4_29597.html)
I find it a little strange how that little Moon and Mushroom bar on the bottom right of the screen is only gone in this picture when Mario and Luigi are in battle. It remains in this picture and all the other pictures that show Mario and Luigi in battle:
(https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gamekyo.com%2FWebmasters%2FImages%2F73911020090113_173917_4_big.jpg&hash=942dc9f2156c8d62465476c3257c0521) (http://www.gamekyo.com/images4_4_29597.html)
I'd also like to thank ShadowBrain for taking his time in finding these pictures!
-
The Bros. will probably be stuck in Bowser's belly like they were trapped in Yoshi's belly in PiT. But eventually, they'll get coughed up (sorry to put it that way). And maybe that picture is just a minigame. Remember, there were minigames in the other M&L games, so this might just be a minigame where Bowser has to throw Goombas at something.
-
That's not really a spoiler, but... well, anyway, more game info (http://gonintendo.com/?p=69177) to assuage your concerns/speculation! (to some extent)
I'd also like to thank ShadowBrain for taking his time in finding these pictures!
Not a problem! I just copy/pasted the link from GoNintendo (actually, I never even looked at them before I posted them, so I have to thank you--et al--for bringing a few to my attention).
-
I have a terrible feeling that MAL3 will be rated with Crude Humor.

Tentative (Japanese) boxart.
-
Hm. This might stay. The Japanese boxart for the past two M&L games were bland too. But this is pretty funny.
-
Even more (http://www.nintendoeverything.com/?p=8467) new screens.
-
It appears that some game play (or at least inside Bowser) will be played in two dimensions like early Mario games.
-
Good night, this Bowser deal is getting annoying. Seems like a pretty huge chunk of the game...
-
Bottom line: We'll just have to wait and see until we can actually play it.
-
If that sticks for the North American release, I'm gonna be disappointed. But I bet we get something better.

I see a pattern.
-
True, so yeah, I'm not too worried. Until we figure out what the "real" theme of the game is here, though, it's hard to guess what the boxart'll be. Being in Bowser, of course, now seems like a focal point, so maybe it'll be some epic melange of all the characters going into Bowser's mouth. Or not.

Well, there's quite a character roster here thus-far...
And it FULLY puts to rest whether or not Fawful is in the game (lookin' awesome btw).
-
Mario looks really good in that picture. Like, "Hey guys, look! I'm back, and I took care of the angry impostor who was in Brawl! Didja miss me?"
As for Fawful, yes, we all like him. I think he's a bit overrated, but he's cool. Can't wait to see what he's up to now.
I'll be sad if E. Gadd doesn't return. When he first showed up in Luigi's Mansion, I thought, "Wow, Nintendo CAN come up with good 'mainstream' Mario characters!" Then he just had allusion after allusion and only really appeared in Superstar Saga and Partners in Time. I like what they did with him though, expanded upon his scientific expertise while still leaving a heavy emphasis on his passion for ghost research.
-
The Peach and Toadsworth pictures are from Partners in Time.
-
I'm interested in who the pink bull-hog is.
-
I'm interested in who the pink bull-hog is.
Ditto, and I see that there a couple of returning PiT characters...
Fawful is back for sure? WIN.
-
That block guy and block dog look pretty kickin'.
-
I was just thinking the exact opposite.
-
So you think they look pretty punchin'?
-
The block guy actually looks like Billy from Rolie Polie Olie. How is that not awesome?
-
CERO rated it A, which I guess means its fine.
-
(CERO is like the ESRB. That's the equivalent of an E rating.)

Hmm.. A Goomba with a sleeping problem, a Paratroopa with a bucket on it's head, and a Shyguy wielding what appears to be a magic wand (but Shyguys weren't in SMB3..)
YES! Fawful makes a comeback!
-
Whoa, Chef. Never thought of that. You have opened my eyes.
-
Hmm. I'm wondering if the Koopa, Goomba, Shyguy, and Gold Bomb-omb are going to be helping M&L like the others did in the PM series? And yeah, Fawful will probably be an even bigger pest this time around. Kinda looking forward to the Mario Bros. encountering him.
-
Whoa, Chef. Never thought of that. You have opened my eyes.
I hope you're not being sarcastic this time.
-
No, I'm not. A bit overdramatic, perhaps.
-
YES! Fawful makes a comeback!
We knew that. PiT said so. Fawful said that he "would become evil again" (paraphrased and translated from Fawful). Plus, enemys had a Fawful mask. However, he does look pimpin' in a cloak.
-
Plus, enemys had a Fawful mask.
...wait a minute you're right. Good observation! Now I'm really looking forward to this game... not that I didn't already highly anticipate it.
-
Actually, that wasn't my observation. Somewhere in this thread, someone else posted that.
-

He's always had a clock, except for when he took it off during the finale of the first M&L game, and during his big speech for the second game. What I'm interested in is the thing he's standing on: it kinda makes me think of the Spinner from Twilight Princess.
-

I...kinda think he means the new cloak....just KINDA.
And there's not much to his jet board for now really; just a more "regal" replacement for his old headgear w/ protective electric field.
-
I meant cloak, though clock is funnier. I don't think I'm going to edit it. XD
-
Fawful dressed as Flava Flav = Win.

I actually forgot that he had a cloak, but I thought the hover board was a part of the cloak. Also, so true.

Where did that awesome character banner come from? Corocoro?

Indescribable win.
-
Now there's a game cover I'd get excited about.
-
What the?!
You know, though: we should have a cover designing contest. The only rule being that the new M&L logo be on the box. Is there any where to get a blank box and the logo by itself? (I might have a DS box on my computer..)

Thanks for the links, Fullmetal Mari0. I have to say, I can't wait to play this game. Even though it looks like Mario and Luigi will be in Bowser's stomach for the entire game, the "levels" in Bowser's stomach look pretty good. For all we know, the whole Mushroom Kingdom could be in Bowser's belly. And since he super-inhaled (like Kirby) Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toadsworth and the others, they're going to be scattered through his huge body, meaning Mario and Luigi will have to travel to Bowser's brain, heart and other places just to rescue the others...all while trying not to become digested. I think it's kinda cool. Maybe while they're in his belly, they'll find an antidote for the bloated Toads and find out what gave Bowser super-sucking powers. I'm pretty sure Bowser will suck up anything he sees, including Professor E. Gadd.

Actually, I've already concluded that they won't be in there the WHOLE time; if you notice in some of the videos, not only does it show them in the outside world (already with the new bros. gauge & pretty high HP) you can also see floating blocks in the overworld; Bowser has no jumping function/button, so who's job is that gonna' be I wonder?
I personally think Bowser's insides are going to be kinda like an "intro" level of sorts overall (even though that's been a BIG focal point of the game's news so far).
It's going to be a killer game though, without a doubt.
-
Hey folks, NP's new issue has M&L 3 in it, in Previews. Check it out. Also, oh look, its the Fullmetal
Alchemist Mari0!
-
I'd still like to know what the moon/mushroom meter means. I notice that it shows up on one of the blocks (along with Jump, Hammer, Bros. Items, etc.) on this page:
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ds/cljj/battle/index.html
(It's the orange block w/the green and red thing, the shapes look like a mushroom and moon to me, anyway).
-
That's for the new "Bros. Attacks" (I don't know if that's the TRUE term for them, but it's kinda wishful thinking on my part).
But yeah, on that same page, that picture of morbidly-obese Weegee is one of those new attacks.
-
But the shell would seem to represent Bros. Items. Though, there seems to be a points system for using them...?
-
The weird pig shown in the pictures will be called "Sowser"
A mixture of Sow- A word for pig (But isn't it a mother pig...?), and Bowser.
Sounds a little blunt since Bowser's going to be going against Sowser, but whatever.
Okay, so here's my attempt at the story from what we've found:
A strange disease strikes the Mushroom Kingdom, infecting Toad's and blowing them to huge sizes. Mario and Luigi go to Peach's Castle to attend a meeting on how to cure the disease. Suddenly, Bowser attacks, and Mario easily defeats him. Bowser's kicked out, into a forest, where he finds the Lucky Mushroom (Which is actually a trap set by Fawful) with a Magikoopa, which gives him the ability to suck in things like a vaccuum. Bowser goes back, and sucks in Mario, Peach, Luigi, a few Toad's (Including Toadbert), and Chippy (The Strange Yellow Star). Bowser procedes to go on a rampage, sucking in all the Toad's in the Kingdom. Mario and Luigi survive, and run around, helping people. Later, Bowser finds his castle being attacked, and a strange pig (Sowser) takes over. Somewhere in all this, Bowser finds Brirock and Blodog (the Block things) and PROBABLY sucks them in (A source states that Brirock helps Mario).
Other Details:
*Fawful also takes over Peach's Castle
*Fawful is Sowser's Boss
*It appears (as Fullmetal said) that Mario and Luigi will eventually escape Bowser and roam the land. They may even join Bowser in the end. The official Mario and Luigi site shows 3 bubbles, one with Bowser and one with mario and Luigi in Bowser, and the two bubbles pointing to a bubble with a ?, which is the end game (or middle game) gameplay.
I CAN'T WAIT!!!!
-
"Sowser"....?
...Where's the source for that? 'Cuz I'm not seeing it on either the official Japanese site or the Super Mario Wiki.
And you do know that the random Magikoopa is Kamek, yeah?
The official Mario and Luigi site shows 3 bubbles, one with Bowser and one with mario and Luigi in Bowser, and the two bubbles pointing to a bubble with a ?, which is the end game (or middle game) gameplay.
-The hell? That's not it at all...
That page shows some of the Bros. actions, Bowser's actions, and the "center" one shows the Bros. influencing Bowser from the inside (in that video's case, helping to stimulate Bowser's muscles to allow him to pull Brirock's little island to the shore).
-
Scratch Sowser.
NP Info:
The name according to NP is Metabos.
Fawful is behind it all, confirmed
Toad sets up a shop in Bowser
Famitsu scores 35/40.
While there are "no dramatic changes," Famitsu's reviewers could find very little to complain about. "The fun action and lovely pixel art of the previous game has been further polished, creating a game filled with the sort of fun only the DS can provide." The M&L-touring-Bowser's-body gimmick is lots of fun, it seems, and while one reviewer "would ask for a little more length," this is still "a great game, one that serves as an example of how games should be made."

Uh-oh.. Sounds like we have another PiT, but I'll reserve judgement until I've actually played it.
-
Game length is overrated.
-
People wanting game length is the reason why games like Sonic Unleashed turn out crappy.
-
Game length is overrated.
QFT. Portal. World of Goo. Majora's Mask. Kirby's Dream Land. Luigi's Mansion. Need I say more?
-
Nope. You need not say more.
Unless you care to mention everyone's beloved Super Mario Bros.
-
I don't mind a game being short as long as it also feels substantial. Good short = Luigi's Mansion, Majora's Mask, Shadow of the Colossus. Bad short = Not to be mentioned for fear of a rebuttal.
-
Well, that's no fun.
-
Just like (un)said game.
-
Majora's Mask is considered short?
(SotC isn't as short as Ico, which I happen to like more, incidentally.)
-
Eh, it's only one other guy's opinion anyway.
I think just the extended amount of "freedom" as opposed to being confined in Peach's castle & past locales of the Kingdom is a very welcome addition.
-
Chup actually does have a point. Majora's Mask is packed with arguably more content than Ocarina of Time was, but people judge by the low dungeon count an ignore the huge amount of time spent between dungeons.
I didn't think Partners in Time was too short. I just hated the collecting system being used. Superstar Saga was more fluid, with no "chapters." One thing after another. The Beanstar pieces go against that a little bit, but you could really tackle those tasks in almost any order desired, if I remember correctly. Partners in Time had the blasted Cobalt Star Shards cutting the game up accordingly, with some fluid storyline after the Whomp Volcano bit.

Majora's Mask was confusing: I'm ashamed to admit, but the save system threw me off. I had to keep playing until I got sick of it.
You're right: M&L was more fluid, and you could tackle the Beanstar pieces in any order. I hope M&L3 is more fluid and less of go here, do this..
-
Agreed. And in relation to the previous debate over series boxarts: http://www.nineoverten.com/2009/02/06/looking-through-mario-luigi-rpg-series-game-covers/
-
Saving in MM is simple. Your progress is saved whenever you play the Song of Time, but a lot of what you've done is not. Basically you keep important things--bosses defeated, masks, weapons, songs learned, money that you have deposited to the bank in West Clock Town. You cannot really save mid-dungeon, or mid-anything for that matter, or you have to start it all over. It's do or die. You can make a save file at an owl statue and everything you've done that three-day cycle is kept, but time isn't reset. Some players can go through the game all in one three-day cycle (after the mandatory one where you're a Deku and can't do anything about it). I'm not one of those people.
Yep. Boxes. I can't wait to see what ours looks like. Or maybe I can. Given the premise of the game I can't be sure. The Japanese boxes all suck though. Books and covers, of course, but they don't do the games justice at all. Sometimes less is a good less--the MOTHER series has always had plain red boxes in Japan, which are strangely hypnotic as if to say "We'll just let this game speak for itself." You could say the same about the Japanese M&L boxes except for that they have just a tap too much for that. Superstar Saga and Partners in Time, on the other hand, have really impressive boxes that fit the games like gloves. Looking at them makes me want to play the games. That's good advertising right there.
-
I just wanna see what the game's US title is gonna be. Hopefully it'll be a play on Fantastic Voyage. I wanna be right. :D
-
I think the thing I'm looking for most in this game is an appearance from Popple. He was by far my favorite villian in SS, mostly because of his awesome battle music. On that subject, it'd be pretty cool if this game (or more RPGs in general) had MOTHER-style music, i.e. there's a ton of different battle songs, one for each few enemies. Just a thought.
-
Oh yeah. They went all out with that in MOTHER 3. Different versions of the same enemy have different versions of the same song, even.
-
Am I the only one who got so turned off by PiT that I'm not really even looking forward to this?
-
Yes.
-
I don't think those results are accurate.
-
Am I the only one who got so turned off by PiT that I'm not really even looking forward to this?
PiT wasn't that bad, but fi this game and several others come out at once that I want, this one is going to be lower priority. I don't even have Animal Crossing:CF yet..
-
That's a bigger priority?!
-
Only by this much. Both are going to be great games, and Nicky can play AC as well or watch me play. It's harder for her to watch on the DS..
-
Even though it's pretty much the same thing as the ds version?
-
Yeah, having played neither, I can't pass judgement on AC:CF or M&L3, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the latter probably is a better investment.
-
I personally am not an Animal Crossing fan, but CF seems more of an improvement on WW than M&L 3 looks to be on PiT.
-
City Folk is basically a graphics update with a few new shops.
-
A sequel isn't always really an "improvement" of a previous game.
-
Yes but this is 90% the same content.
-
I was referring to this statement:
CF seems more of an improvement on WW than M&L 3 looks to be on PiT.
-
Looks like Mario and Luigi RPG 3 has been released in Hong Kong.
We need Translators!
BTW, here's a gameplay video by an early player:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-LlVOvUg8s
-
Looks like the jump attack is now more like Paper Mario's.
-
My guess on what is happening:
Mario and Luigi are going into a meeting with the big shots of the Mushroom Kingdom (This happened after the virus went through the Mushroom Kingdom causing Toads to implode). Luigi falls asleep, because he thinks he won't be asked about anything. Toadsworth, unknown named yellow bomb, Peach and Mario try to find a way to fix the Toads. Bowser comes in and crashes the meeting. And thats that. My guess is that shortly there after, they get swallowed by Bowser.
-
In reference to the sixth link on the Japanese site, I note that the green shell stat is called SP, rather than BP.
-
I love how Mario dives in to protect Peach. He's still got that romantic charm in him.
