Title: Edible Mallow (UPDATED: FULL CAKE)
Post by: CrossEyed7 on December 31, 2008, 01:59:22 AM
For fun, we're making a Mario cake. The cake will be shaped like one of the little castles at the end of normal levels in SMB, and will be surrounded by characters made out of edible clay. I decided to make Mallow, because I'm pretty sure I've never seen him on a Mario cake before.

This is probably the best picture, since the colors look right.

Next to the SMRPG strategy guide, for comparison. SMRPG models are pretty easy to recreate, since it's pretty clear just by looking at them how they're put together.

His pants and the inside of his head are two marshmallows. His Froggie Stick is a pretzel. Everything is edible except for the toothpicks (one in his Froggie Stick arm, and one in each foot)

The only part I did was Mallow. My mom did the cake parts, my sister made Peach and the mushroom, and my brother made everything else.

He started out as Baby Luigi, and then the body kind of got full-sized, so I guess he's Teenage Luigi.

We had to move Mallow a bit -- the first time we put him on, his hand was behind Peach and it looked like he was grabbing her butt.

Awesome! Your next challenge is to make Exor, Mario, Bower, Peach, Geno and Toad. Good luck with the cake process.

Just make sure the cake doesn't come to life.

I actually did suggest we make Bundt/Raspberry for the next cake when we finish this one, so keep an eye out.

Just make sure the cake doesn't become a lie.
Fixed. Also, if I could actually bake and had the money to buy the ingredients, I'd copy your idea. Good luck with the cake.

Fixed.
That's what I thought he actually said when I scrolled past the post (Yes, I could've made the joke, but I feel unqualified to do so until I play Portal).

Back to the confection at hand, nice (marsh)Mallow! I look forward to the cake proper.

Well done!  But I hated reading this on an empty stomach...

Hi-res pictures! (Somehow I don't think these would count in the Hi-Def Mario thread, however)

Someone went crazy with the camera! Anyway, nice snapshots. I noticed one thing wrong with Mallow; He needs puffier shorts.
But! That's just my opinion.

Yeah. For accuracy's sake I wanted the shorts to be whiter than his body, but I had already used the whitest candy clay we had, so I had to use a marshmallow for his pants. My excuse is that he's lost some baby fat since we last saw him.

And I should have used jimmies for the eyes or something.

Wow... that goomba looks... scary.  No, seriously, like the evil minion of Bowser a goomba is supposed to look like.  The mushroom looks pretty good.  I like Luigi.  Probably something about the bulbous nose...

More threads should be updated with FULL CAKES. It just enhances the appeal!

(I'll comment on the actual cake when I can find the time and patience to load it)

Still on dial-up, huh? I was going to question the necessity of the 56k warning in another one of CrossEyed7's threads, but I guess it's been justified.

To contribute, have you considered making Mario, Bowser, and Geno to add to the top of the cake?

Nice job! I have to admit, that's one pretty scary goomba! And that chocolate castle looks REALLY good. Mallow looks heroic, and Peach looks ok too. I hope this isn't the finished cake. Cause you still need the star of the game; Mario. Besides that, the cake and all it's characters look pretty good.

So your original plan was to eat babies?

Not that that's bad or anything.

Well, it's a little late to add anyone else now, considering we've already started eating the top part. But if we do decide to make Bundt/Raspberry later (and I'm around at the time), I'll make Mario, Bowser, and Geno fighting it (since that would always be my party at that point). Mario himself wasn't really high on my priority list this time: everyone and their mother these days is making cakes with him on them, but only me and my mother, to the best of my knowledge, have ever made one with Teeneegee, Mallow, and the guy from the Toad Brigade who had a pickax. I've always liked obscure characters for some reason. Probably the reason I always liked the yellow Yoshi the best. The blue one is so cliche. It's everyone's favorite. And so easy to get, too -- just let him eat the star and Start-Select out. But to my young mind, Star World 3 was a force to be reckoned with. Obviously it's by far the simplest level in the game, but few have such a high concentration of hecticness. You're standing on nothing but grabbable blocks, only one or two layers of them separating you from oblivion, and when the run and grab buttons are the same, it's all too easy to fall through there before you even know what's happening. And there's immediately a Lakitu directly above your head. Jump for the silver P-switch and you're just as likely (at least if you're four) to hit a Spiny as the switch. And it's made all the more frustrating by the fact that the goal is always visible, right from the start -- but that isn't your goal. You're here to get a yellow Yoshi, in the only place they have them. To get the baby to eat five things, you have three options, none of them easy: you can pick up grabbable blocks, and probably do a striking imitation of Bowser in SMB3 in the process; you can try your luck at hitting that switch and turning the Spinies into coins, which you will accidentally pick up before Yoshi (or Lishi, as I often call the yellow one) can eat a single one; or you can try your luck on the pure Spinies, and, when you go to pick up the baby dinosaur to use as a voracious shield, more often than not pick up a grabbable block instead and fall into the bottomless pit. It must have been years before I was able to get a yellow Yoshi on my own, and once I did, she was forever a badge of honor.

I rambled a bit there, didn't I?

There's a 4th way to get the yellow yoshi to evolve, and it's faster: Let it eat whatever's in the top screens item box. Press the select button  to drop the power-up and presto! Instant yoshi growth. Maybe next time you guys can make a Yoshi's island cake. With yoshi cookies and stuff...oh, man, I'm getting hungry again.

Don't worry. The yellow one is my favorite too.
