I can't blame you. Our mortal ears are unworthy of comprehending such tonal perfection, such musical splendour, such lyrical artistry. Even CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/web/03/15/rebecca.black.friday/) is all over it.

By the way, here's Bob Dylan's version of this instant classic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FISHEO3gsM&feature=related).

Who the hell is Rebecca Black?
Title: Re: FRIDAY
Post by: CrossEyed7 on March 15, 2011, 10:45:51 PM
I love how she's trying to rip off Bieber by throwing in a rapping black guy at the end who refers to her as "RB".

The name Ark Music Factory seems a little too self-aware.

I also love this guy's comment on her webzone:
Quote from: LancerPancer
You're song "Friday" is inspirational.  Period.
It includes all the makings of a hit: 1) it's educational (teaches the days of the week), 2) it incorporates real life issues that everyone struggles with (which seat to take), 3) it's fun (even repeats the word "fun").

She's following C-SPAN on Twitter. Why? Is this a viral marketing campaign for a presidential candidate?

Every pop music video produced since 2007 has featured a rapping black guy.

Who the hell is Rebecca Black?

A thirteen-year-old girl with very rich parents and fanciful aspirations of becoming a pop-music superstar. And to think she'd never have had the opportunity if it weren't for Auto-Tune and unscrupulous California businessmen!

Fair enough, but the RB thing has to be intentional.
Title: Re: FRIDAY
Post by: BP on March 15, 2011, 11:56:37 PM
The name Ark Music Factory seems a little too self-aware.

Apparently it's a company trying to intentionally create Justin Biebers by making music videos for any kid whose parents have money and this is one of them. And the rappin' bro in the video, the one who heavily implies he is ready to get it on with some high schoolers, is one of the producers who puts himself into all of them.

So yeah Weegee summed it up

Who the hell's driving the car? She's thirteen. Either someone about thirteen is driving, or there's a kid mixed in there who's at least seventeen. Is the seventeen-year-old hanging out with a bunch of thirteen-year-olds, or is she a thirteen-year-old hanging out with a bunch of seventeen-year-olds? I'm not sure which is less weird.

Title: Re: FRIDAY
Post by: CrossEyed7 on March 16, 2011, 09:15:52 PM
Why did she go to a bus stop and have to catch her bus if she was going to ride in her friend's car? If she had her mind set on going somewhere on a bus, why is it suddenly no longer important? She doesn't have to make up her mind between going with her friends or going where she was supposed to be going (school, presumably), she just has to make up her mind between sitting in the front or the back. Except there's not an empty seat in the front anyway. Why isn't the girl on her left her friend? And why is there a totally different set of people in the car twelve hours and forty-five minutes later? Why is she the only person still in the car from that morning? Even the driver isn't the same, even though it's the same car. What the hell happened during the course of the day? Why does she say "sittin' in the back seat" when everyone in the back seat is standing? And why is everybody Russian?
Title: Re: FRIDAY
Post by: Weegee on March 16, 2011, 09:44:23 PM
As bad as "Friday" may be, at least it doesn't star a sixteen-year-old hooker who goes only by her first name (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7-1BYFBngs&feature=related).

I still love how Fat Usher insists on inserting himself (pardon the pun) into every single video.

Title: Re: FRIDAY
Post by: CrossEyed7 on March 17, 2011, 12:12:20 PM
Why is only the one on the right her friend? I'd be willing to overlook it if it was for a rhyme, but it doesn't rhyme with anything. In fact, there literally are no rhymes in the entire song other than rhyming "seat" with "seat" in the bridge and "Friday" with "Friday" in the chorus.

I guess technically "I got this you got this" rhymes with "You know what it is" in the second verse.

Even Fat Usher doesn't have any rhymes. Why doesn't the rapper put together any rhyming words. The closest he comes is "In the front seat, in the back seat" and "Fast lane, switchin' lanes", two lines which only rhyme with themselves because they repeat the same noun twice with different adjectives in such a way that each line contradicts itself.

In her defense, she's taking it pretty well, and she doesn't seem to have an inflated ego.

Although no matter how well she takes it I just can't bring myself to think any more highly than before about the song itself.

And Justin Bieber?  Really?  I don't know whether she's pretending to be intelligent or pretending to be an idiot.

The Good Morning America interview. (http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video/rebecca-black-dont-think-im-worst-singer-13164800)

"After seeing it go from 4,000 views to 70,000 views in one night and then waking up in the morning gotta be fresh gotta go downstairs gotta have my bowl gotta have cereal and it was at 200,000 views, that's when I realized, this is gonna be big"

In her defense, she's taking it pretty well, and she doesn't seem to have an inflated ego.
Agreed, she could probably cash in on the attention if they didn't do any autotune and the lyrics weren't hilariously awful.

If I were a record label, I'd sign her on right now to do an album of jazz covers. It'd get plenty of attention, sell at least pretty well, and possibly even be decent, considering the few seconds of un-autotuned singing we heard in the interview.

And Bieber is actually pretty good.

I figured out what abou is so irritating. Well, aside from the obvious.

She smiles wrong. Rather than smile lifting the muscles at the corner of her mouth, raising her cheeks and squinting her eyes, she pulls the corner out as she lifts her upper lip up. It's more like a pained or forced smile, and creates heavy nasolabial lines, and looks unnatural.

Two (http://www.theawl.com/2011/03/arms-so-freezy-rebecca-blacks-friday-as-radical-text) great essays (http://i.imgur.com/N00hU.jpg) analyzing the video. (language, mature themes)

Neither of them addressed the significance of everyone in the car being female in the second verse and the applause at the end being totally silent, though. I think those both have some potential for literary criticism.

[darn], just passed 70 views! And it now has more dislikes than Baby. Or at least, I'm just now noticing that.
Here's why Wikipedia is stupid:

Quote from: Wikipedia
Today, Rebecca Blacks "Friday" has superseded the video of "Baby" as the "most disliked video" on Youtube. This should be edited. Crush-40 (talk) 20:51, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
It needs to go with an independent reliable source (not Youtube). Tbhotch* ۩ ۞ 20:52, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
YouTube is not a reliable source. Ever. Even for the number of dislikes a YouTube video has. So someone needs to find a freakin' newspaper article that says that Friday has more dislikes than Baby. Until they find a source, 1,183,000 is more than 1,352,000.

Wouldn't they need another newspaper article to tell them what the other newspaper article says?
Title: Re: FRIDAY
Post by: Lizard Dude on March 31, 2011, 07:15:38 PM
It seems dumb now, but it's because the YouTube counters themselves aren't static information. In ten years, links to the videos' stats as a source wouldn't tell you anything about the events of March 29, 2011. YouTube itself could still be the source, but they'd have to post a dated blog article about it or something first.

I walked into Little Caesars on Sunday to get a pizza and they were blasting "Friday" throughout the store. I happened to know the only other customer and I said to him, "Huh, they play good music in here" and someone in the depths of the kitchen started lolling.

Kinda disturbing that anybody would willingly be blasting that song anywhere, unless they're sadists of some sort.

Quote from: Fat Usher
"So I said, 'What seat should I take? Should I take the front seat or the back seat?' Realizin' that we were supposed to have a school bus. Guess what? We didn't have no money for a school bus (bus bus). But we made it work."
Well, that certainly puts things in a new light. In the original text of the song, she was meant to get on the school bus at the bus stop, which is where she saw her friends. Presumably, the second verse is actually set at 7:45 AM, which is why she wants time to fly and why she only mentions one friend at her side (most school buses only have two kids in each seat), and Fat Usher was passed by the school bus on the highway either in the morning (which would put it concurrent with the second verse, as the bus was cruisin' on the highway at that time) or in the afternoon -- not at night.

Everything makes sense now.

Except for the whole "we charge these kids over a thousand dollars a song and couldn't bribe a school to let us borrow a bus" thing

Wow, she has an ego. First she sings a song about her hangin' out with friends, then a song about how famous she is, then a song about people caring about her.

I especially love the positive spin everyone's been throwing on her, saying she was "the viral hit" of 2011. How could they completely miss the point so hard?

How could they completely miss the point so hard?

"There is only one thing worse than being talked about and that is NOT being talked about."

"I don't care what they say about me as long as they spell my name right."

"There's no such thing as bad publicity."

Who, over the age of 16, and with good mental health could agree with all that? Black switched to homeschooling after Friday happened because of bullying, Luigison--even she must have realized that "everybody loves me" and "everybody loves to hate me" are very much not the same.
