Title: More Minus World Than You Think.
Post by: Sherbert on March 15, 2003, 01:13:48 PM
Before you shout "It was a dream" or even better, "Liar!", hear me out. Zip back several years ago. Me and my brother sitting in our room and Im playing Mario Bros 2. I wasnt playing for real, just messing around in the first level. I was at the part where there is the star and the turtle shell, when I jump and poof, the next thing I know ia that there ia a black screen and the words "Welcome to World -1". It did not include the small image or info on how many lives you have. When it started, it was just like another level in the game except black and white. Now here is the part where you yell "Why did you do that?!" because I was at the time, extremely afraid of game secrets and glitches and stuff that generally doesnt happen in a game. 10 seconds later I RESET the darn NES. Poof, this minus world never to be seen by me again. Now, I have a theory that maybe the game overheated or something, and thats what it produced, but Im still kinda skeptical about it. I also have no idea how i accessed it either. Probably a certain combo of buttons. If anyone has the system lying around and the game, my best advice is to just go wild in the first level. More evidence to support that it might have just been the game overheating is that you dont see any info on it anywhere. These days you can tear a ROM apart and see the coding, so if it were really in there someone would have said something. This is getting a little lengthy so ill end it here. To recap: Im serious, i didnt know how i did it, i had a whitness (my brother who still gives me the 3rd degree about restarting every time i bring it up).

Hi, Sherbert. Welcome to the boards. Try not to fall to the newbie curse.

With that said, "It was a dream. Liar."

I find that very hard to believe.
You sure it didn't say something like "Warp - world 1"?
And then got the wrong palette setting. You warped to the same world and the game got confused and gave it the wrong palette, probably due to a misaligned pin.
That's my guess.

That would be a very excellent explanation, but im absolutely positive it said world -1. and the world it warped to wasnt the same, it was one of the much more later ones. but eh, who knows!

I still think it was a misaligned pin.

i think modern nes emulators should include cart overheat function.. then we could experiment with minus world.

That would be a really cool function BUT
I'm under the impression that all the emulator programmers are more programmy dudes and probably don't know much about physical overheating. PLUS, I don't know if ROMs would be able to deal with overheating programming because it has to do with the physical layout of the cart. Therefore, I propose a new format of MAC data that encompasses Memory And Cartlayout. Now someone make it.

They would have to like program in a random amount of error probability and a value for how you stick the cartridge in or something... heh, that would be funny.
