Yeah, I would say it's about as much of a Mario game as all those realistic sports games he awkwardly appeared in on the GameCube.

Well, for sure, it's no contest compared to what PM actually ended up as. But take away the header and it looks tantalizingly like a game that would've come out for some alternate-universe system that existed between the SNES and N64.

Yeah, one part of me is psyched that there's a little less institutional bigotry in place, while the other part of me will be interested to see how the gay divorce rate pans out now that the forbidden-fruit aspect is gone.

On one hand, typing like that unironically is now officially--and rightfully--relegated to the early 2000s; on the other hand, they'd probably understand it just fine if it was speaking in hieroglyphs emojis.

Dang, I think I still want a Mario RPG that looks like that.

Reggie likens the reaction to MP:FF to the initial reaction to Wind Waker's visual style.

I hope Wind Waker isn't going to be Nintendo's card every time a game looks bad from the outset. You can't say "you're acting just like back then" because the circumstances surrounding each are not the same.
Yeah, apples to oranges of the highest degree. Wind Waker definitely looked risky at the time, but (1) Nintendo was still pushing it as a legit Zelda game, (2) it didn't come on the heels of one horribly-received game, borrowing the name of another critically-acclaimed sub-series that hadn't seen a new entry in eight years.

Also, "we don't want to announce games until we know they're going to release within a year" he says as Nintendo announces the Zelda game for every console years in advance and then delays it.
Yeah... how long has that been a thing, and why?

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is essentially the first Paper Mario with a new paint job.
Wut? I mean, okay, some partners and superficial narrative threads were similar, but otherwise it was plenty different. I don't see the game's mechanics being otherwise largely identical as surprising and/or bad, if that's what you were getting at. The only criticism I'd give TTYD is that the areas were more linear than in the original PM and the fetch quest before heading to the moon was aggressively annoying.

Also, for the record, I'll still stick up for SPM. Partners in Time, though, now that game was shamelessly repetitive.

Mario is your oyster.
Best N64-era print ad tagline that never was.

Not keeping up with the livestreams (or Muppets) by the second probably cushioned the blow, but I didn't feel like this was *that* disappointing of a show. I mean, don't get me wrong, Three Swords and Animal Crossing Whatever might as well be pieces of cardboard with "obligatory 'social' spinoff" written on the front, and FF has the reek of a B-side IP concept getting transfused into a dying franchise, but it's not, say, E3 2008-level unspeakable. Star Fox Zero looks promising, I'm reserving judgment on Mario Maker, and Paper Jam should be great so long as it leans more toward Dream Team than Sticker Star.

But cards on the table, Sony was killin' it for the first time in recent memory.

With my VHS copy of the Crystal Coconut irrevocably degraded, this is the best news out of E3 week so far.

Yeah, I'd be willing to agree it's been rendered a bit obsolete by latter-day translations and such, but there's still a bit of "at last!" validation to this.

Random question: Is anybody seriously supposed to remember which Myers-Briggs Personality Types are which by acronym alone?
