Title: Paranatural
Post by: BP on January 26, 2013, 05:50:22 AM
This comic. (http://paranatural.net/) It's awesome. The art is detailed and fantastic. The writing is smart and funny. The characters are... almost all insane, but endearing, varied and interesting. I can't say enough nice things about it.

I read up to the current panel in one sitting. Now I'm slightly frustrated that there isn't more to read. :/

Same here. I must say, using speech bubbles as a way to frame scenes that characters are recalling is pretty clever.

It's a fun story to follow; that's for sure. The characters are amazingly endearing and funny. It's actually a very inspiring series to me, as a writer. I'll definitely try to keep up to speed with this.

What is it with Bird Person and hat-wearing bat-wielding magic kids?

He's one of them

Wouldn't surprise me too much. His superpower must be art. Or cooking. Or something.

He doesn't wear a hat though. Or carry a bat. He is magical, however.

I used to have a bat but it broke. It was cracked.

When my hair gets really long I wear a hat to keep it out of my eyes

Lizard Dude makes his debut appearance (http://paranatural.net/chapter-4-page-11/)! Along with Mickey Mouse '40s mobster film reel gal. In some undisclosed location in Subcon, apparently.

Mr. Spender is so awkward I love it

I think everyone in this dream palace is a medium. Spender included; the shades aren't a tool, they hide his spirit's manifestation. Manlizard was confirmed by the author in the comments, and no obvious tools are in this page or the previous one.

Well, one can be a spectral without necessarily having a tool or being a medium. Also, tool-wielders don't always carry their tools with them. A lot of the people in the rainbow tower are very obviously mediums, though.

I suspect Spender is a medium AND a tool-wielder, personally. The previous page pretty much confirms he's bonded with least two spirits, possibly three. I agree; I think his spirit's manifestation shows in his eyes, which he uses his sunglasses to hide. But I also think there's another spirit IN the sunglasses--a tool.

SPOILER WARNING FOR THOSE NOT CAUGHT UP TO THE MOST RECENT UPDATES.
I don't want to bother using spoiler tags.

Okay, so something got me thinking. Spender clearly has light-related powers. He's been shown to make things/himself brighter or glow and apparently he can flick off the lights. But check out page 3-44 (http://paranatural.net/chapter-3-page-44/). It looks almost like he nullifies and/or absorbs Isaac's lightning. That kind of deals with light, since lightning involves light, but I dunno. Could this be a different spirit's power? Does one of his spirits emit light and another absorb light? On a later page, he mentions his mind being a "delicate balance." Maybe that's the balance?

But, regardless, I think his actions on 3-44 provide evidence he's a medium. Like Isaac, he seems to use his powers without the aid of a tool. As opposed to Isabel, Ed, and Max, whose powers come directly from/out of the tools they wield. (I'm excluding "standard" spectral energy powers, like spec-shots, of course.) Even if Spender's sunglasses are a tool, he demonstrated those powers using his hand, not the shades themselves. (Although his shades do glow dramatically in the 7th panel.)

Although I really wonder about how he spoiler tagged his words in the last panel, to which Isaac reacted. Does he also have the power to break the 4th wall? XD I know the author discussed the 4th wall breakiness in the alt text, but still, Isaac DID react. I'm curious as to WHY it was spoiler tagged, too. When removed, the information is interesting, but I dunno about it being worthy of spoiler tags, either for Isaac, his spirit, or for us, the readers. Time will tell, I suppose.

Also, really interesting about the Mr. Walker and the "weird suits" and the "mooks at Isabel's place" comment from Isaac, the latter two whom have been shown in recent updates.

I love all the foreshadowing in this comic. Yeah, I still find 3-44 to be one of the most intriguing pages.

Also, 2010 (before the comic launched):
(https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F31.media.tumblr.com%2Fd830e154b4706a7e01799386f0e111a7%2Ftumblr_mtsgg4bJwR1shqsw5o1_250.gif&hash=ff2e6ba1974945b4b77c71ecd9358e54)

Isaac had goggles. Hurr. Maybe they were his tool and he wasn't going to be a medium, or the concept of mediums didn't exist yet? But no one else in this GIF has their tool, so maybe he was simply even more anime than can be imagined.

This comic remains the best thing ever. An inspirational thing. And I love how time after time it's answered questions I've had. Most recently with spirits being shown to not always leave people or tools when fully powered. I had wondered why spectrals never seem concerned with their powers being temportary, and how many tools Isabel would have gone through, with how spir-with how passionate she is about spectral stuff. Turns out the spirit in her tool recovers very quickly and could leave it whenever she wants, but is a friend who kills herself to repossess it. Additionally, if it takes Eightfold a few days to regain power even with how much spectral energy she must get from Isabel, it can probably be assumed that larger and more powerful spirits like Max's, Isaac's or Perfecshbluh could take years and years to recover even with regular amounts of received energy... now I wonder what happens to a spirit whose medium dies. Do they remain possessing the body or does it count the same as a broken tool? Isaac must die and answer my questions.
