Title: Marching Band
Post by: Lola Prue on September 30, 2002, 04:28:50 PM
Okay..here's a really fun question! :) Who here is in Marching Band. Seriously! You don't HAVE to name your school, but I was just wondering! I am! So...how about you! I just thought that it would be fun to know! Maybe talk about "marching basics" or something like that!

:)

I'm in marching band at Havre (Montana) High School. I play euphonium and this year we're doing/done a James Bond show.

That's so awsome! I love James Bond! Our show this year is called "Down from Shimmering Skies" We had a competition last week, and we placed second in our division, and guard (me) placed 1st. We made it to finals and placed 7th out of 12. It was fun! Are you guys going to GSL?

Well, probably NOT b/c your school's in Montana! But, what ever!

Heh, you guessed right. My director hasn't done any competitions in quite some time, although some surprisingly small schools around the state that I know of have gone to surprisingly big competetions. Anyhow, we basically just perform for our town (parades, games, etc.) and sometimes play for random college games and whatnot.

The Bond show is pretty cool. It includes JB Theme (of course :P), "Live and Let Die" (one mean song, if you ask me), and "For Your Eyes Only."

So what kind of songs are you playing? Twinkle Twinkle Little Star?

Those are good songs.
One thing, the title is actually "Carry On Wayward Son", no "my". :-D

I LOVE the song, Live and Let Die! I'm a HUGE JB freak! Anyway...NO! We do not play twinkle twinkle little star. All though that would be funny...we're not! The music is an arrangment of a piece by James Curnow called "Down from Shimmering Skies." It has five movements, and we are using parts of mvts. 1;2;3; and 5. The movements are called:

The Cosmos
The Spirit World
The Mortal World
The Sky World

It's really fun! We just has a competition on Saturday. Band placd 3rd, and guard placed 2nd. Not bad. It was so muddy! I slipped and fell! :) But I'm all right!

Just got back from college game homecoming pre-game marching. Things went well, except we took about 10 seconds too long so the dual jet fly-over came 10 seconds before the end of the national anthem.

Oh well, time to go buy Mario Sunshine.

I was in a marching band, but I graduated this year and am in college now.  But I play symphony band now.  Symphony is so much cooler because your can actually hear the woodwinds, especially saxes.

Heh-heh! Boy don't you know! We can hardly hear our saxes too!

:)

(No offense to any one who is actually in my school's marching band!)

I play trumpet in the high school marching band (Now, anyway, marching season is only 2 weeks away from being over) And I must say.. I don't get any respect there. My director has me playing the crappy 3rd part wheras I am better (Not saying this to sound condesending, but it's true) Than all of the 2nds and 3rd, and about 1 or 2 of the 1sts! They got a freshman playing first part! (I am in 10th grade) Is it any coincidence that his mom is also head of the School Board of *Insert my town here*? And that the band got a "larger that normal" budget from the School Board of *Insert my town here*? I doubt it. And so the director has me playing the crappy 3rd part. I am the only person playing 3rd Trumpet that can PLAY their part. None of the others can play their part, along with the 2nds either... And therefore you only hear 1st Trumpet, and I am forced between making a sucky blaring sound or not being heard (Most of the 1sts can play their parts... includidng the freshman. Hey, I never said the freshman sucked.) because no one else in the 2nds and 3rd are playing, and the 1sts are heard oer everyone. I am surprised we even got a 1st caption (60+ points) at our District competition...

Needless to say, our band is run corruptly.

I am not a people person. In fact, I`m more of an anti-people person.
I respect your post. As long as you don''t insult my intelligence in it.

I'm in marching/concert band. The way my school goes, if you're in concert band you're in marching band. I play tenor sax in Advanced band and jazz band. My band teacher's cool! He's really funny. Last year we went to Knott's Berry Farm, a theme park near us. We have about 165 students in the band.

I've eaten some Knott's jelly of some kind before.
I'm not in a marching band, but I'm in an orchestra... and not a crummy school orchestra either.

You know what's fun? :) I'm in orchestra too! My orchestra teacher makes fun of the band all the time, and a lot of what she says it true! But anyway, yeah, I just thought that it was fun that I'm both in band and Orchestra. The ADVANCED chamber orchestra too! 1st violin too! :)

If you must know....I do not play a BAND instroment. I play violin and piano. But that doesn't matter! Anyway...I am IN the marching band because I am on the color guard. The people that spin the wooden guns and large shiny poles with flags upon them.

Unfortunately....this saturday is the last competition for Marching season! :( We are performing our show at the TWA dome, or GSL dome, or the Edward dome, or what-ever it's called now, really bright and early that morning!

I don't think any of you are going to be there, but if you are, let me know so I can cheer for you! :) I plan to stay there all day too! I think I updated my e-mail (lp9007@earthlink.net) so drop me a line if you don't want others to know what school you are! And yes I'll e-mail back!

Anyway...if/and/or/when anyone out there is going to that certain competition, and are there to see us perform, we are called, The Marquette Mustang Marching Band. We perform at like..........early in the morning! :) I forgot the time! Anyway, drop me a line, or not! :)

I had my concert band concert last Wensday! It was so fun seeing the entire band crowd around us, the jazz band, just for warmups! My conductor didn't even notice for about 10 minutes, and when he did, it was really funny watching them scram!

It was funny joking with my intermediate band(i'm in advanced) friend, saying he didn't make adv. band 'cause there were no open alto spots, but over the summer, all but two of them quit!

Guess what?!?! It's that time again to take out your drill books and set picture one of the show...marching season has started. Well...it's pretty much over now...but oh well.

Okay, I know I haven't posted in ages, but I still feel loyal to the good ol` TMK.

But that's off topic.

MARCHING BAND PEOPLE! What's up? :)

There's really no "real" point to this post, but as a spontaneous question...what competitions have you performed at so far? What places, what's your show called and what not? :)

We've performed at...

Farming Competition
Lafayette Competition
Echoes off the River Alton Competition
and
Greater St. Louis Competition

We don't do very much, but the football games and parades take a lot out of you. Not to mention the practices.

Anyway...anyone been to these competition? Which ones have you all been to?

::side note:: thought I'd bring this topic to life again! :)

Anyhow, I pulled out of marching band at the last moment for my freshman year of college because of the huge time commitments. It also conflicted with a different Honors Program thing I was doing. Oh well, maybe next year.

Well, my marching season is almost over (less than a week!). At least I am playing 1st like I should this year - the sad irony being that I can't play antmore due to my nose surgery. I'm glad I can at least march the show for Regionals.

I forgot to mention my band.

I am in the top band entitled, "Wind Ensemble." I am also 1st chair out of four. The people I beat are very good, so that means that I am a bit better. They totally messed up a chair test, but I knew the music very well giving me the advantage.

I'm not in marching band anymore, b/c I am in college.  No college within driving distance from my house has a marching band, but I still play in the symphony.  My little brother's marching band is doing a 70's theme and have just put the whole thing on the field......yes, it took that long for them to finally get it.  He goes to Satsuma High School as was my Alma Mater.

I have a sister in a college marching band. It's the Pride of SMSU.

She's co-captain of the color guard there, which is like a pretty big thing! They're performing at the GSL festival next weekend as the exibition group.

Yeah! I get to see my sister perform! We're both on color guards, except I'm in highschool, and, well...she's not! :)

The Marching 100 have had A LOT of state competitions that they have won.

They are from Belton, Texas, the county seat of Texas right in the middle of the state. Belton's an awesome place to live!!!! Woo!

I will be in the Marching 100 next year, woo even more!!!!

That's so awsome! :)

I'm in marching band. I play bass drum. I'm going to play snare next year. I'm better than both our snares, but I missed tryouts. This might sound like boasting, but if you heard me play next to them, you want me to play snare, too. ;)
The surprising thing is, the Northmor High School Marching Band(That's my band, if you can't put two and two together.) is one of the best things we have at our school. It is rivaled only by the Girl's Cross Country team and the wrestling team. That's why were the Pride of Northmor. Our football and basketball teams suck. Big time.

Our school doesn't give a crap about our marching band. There's even a new rule at our school that says all the cars need to be movied out of the parking lot by 3:30 so we can practice. It's now called the "band parking lot". You think we could use the stadium field, but noooooo! Football people don't want us to tear up the field!

Sigh...we put up with so much!

But yeah for snare drums! They're amazing! :)
Title: Re: Marching Band
Post by: Dairy King on October 18, 2003, 08:46:37 PM
We're allowed to practice on the real field, but we aren't allowed to set our drum harnesses on the "precious" track,(it goes around the football field, by the way)because we might damage it. We set them there anyways, and then drag them along it. We're so rotten!

Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused!
