Video Game Chat / Question About Data Transfer from Wii to Wii U
« on: November 18, 2012, 07:03:28 PM »
Would someone who did the data transfer from Wii to Wii U please answer this question?  Can the following games have their data moved from the Wii to the Wii U, or do they just stay in the old Wii?

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Mario Kart Wii
Animal Crossing: City Folk

Thanks!

Mario Chat / A Question about Toad
« on: November 13, 2012, 02:12:14 PM »
I was just reviewing the from Japanese to English comparison of Super Mario RPG and wanted to ask for clarification.  In the English translation, Toads were referred to as Mushroom People/Mushroom Retainers with one specific individual named Toad.  In Japan, all the Mushroom People/Mushroom Retainers were always known as Kinopios (the Japanese name for Toad), right?  It wasn't until Paper Mario when the English translation more closely followed the Japanese naming convention.

So if I'm reading this correctly, Super Mario RPG has one Kinopio specifically named Kinopio, right?  Because Raz ("Kino") and Rani ("Nanshi") are other Kinopios that have their own names.

Game Help / Super Mario Land 2 All Levels
« on: November 04, 2011, 12:21:04 PM »
I'm playing through Super Mario Land 2 for the first time through the Virtual Console.  I've managed to clear 31 levels according to the file select screen, but I heard that there are 32 levels.  Am I missing a level, or am I at the maximum?  Could the last level (Wario Castle) be the 32nd level, but the game doesn't save to count it?

Game Help / DS Wi-Fi Transfer
« on: August 20, 2011, 09:06:11 AM »
I have a question regarding transferring your DS Wi-Fi account to a 3DS.  If you transfer, do all your records and friend codes move to the new system intact, or are they lost or altered?  For example, would my Mario Kart DS friend code and win/loss record be reset if I sent them to a 3DS, or is the information simply moved?  I'm guessing the data is moved, but I wanted to check with someone to be sure before I decide if I wanted to try it.

Game Help / World 9 in The Lost Levels
« on: January 05, 2011, 04:22:58 PM »
In order to reach World 9 in The Lost Levels, you have to play from 1-1 to 8-4 in one run without warping.  I'm considering trying this out, but first I want to know this: in the All-Stars version, does reaching World 9 allow you to select it in the main menu?

Game Help / Blue Smudges on Wii Remote
« on: December 31, 2010, 11:33:22 AM »
I noticed that some blue smudges have emerged on my white Wii Remote after I tortured myself by completing DKCR's sadistic Time Attack mode.  With the remote in the horizontal position, the smudges appear by the "right" button on the control pad and the 1 and 2 buttons.  I can only assume that these formed by pressing these buttons so hard for so long with sweaty hands.  I tried cleaning the remote to wipe the smudges off, but so far nothing has been effective.  My remote still functions so it's no big deal; I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a similar situation.

Mario Chat / Somebody DOESN'T Like BIS!

Wow, with all its stellar reviews, I thought Bowser's Inside Story was as universally lovable as those singing ants from Garfield and FriendsHere is one dissenter.  At least even he acknowledges the awesomeness of Fawful!

Edit: A bit of a problem.  That link doesn't work because the forum is automatically censoring part of "game set watch" which put together forms a naughty word.  So if you want to see it, visit www.gameset watch.com/2010/11/column_the_spoony_bard_when_an.php#more without the spaces.

Mario Chat / How Would YOU Do Mario Kart?
« on: July 05, 2010, 04:58:24 PM »
Note: This topic is not about the upcoming Mario Kart for the Nintendo 3DS.  It's a discussion on how YOU would handle an entry in the series.

Ever since I first played the SNES original I've fallen in love with the Mario Kart series.  That doesn't mean, however, I wouldn't change a few things if I was in charge of developing the latest game.  So if you had the power, what would YOU do differently?

I'll start with the roster.  One thing I'd try to do is have everyone in the so-called 'Big Eight' have one partner, one rival, and one rival's partner.  I'd also make sure there is only one version of each character; this means no baby characters or playable skeletons of other characters.  It's not that I have anything against those characters, but the Mario series has no many lovable faces that it just seems like such a waste to have any one character take more than one slot.  I'd also not include generic drones and random bosses and instead focus actual characters that are more 'significant' in the Mario series as a whole.  The only exception I'd make to this would be the Koopa Troopa (and his partner) since he's appeared so often he's almost become a character in himself (as in, the Mario Kart Koopa Troopa).  Also, one thing I enjoy about Mario Kart is that it's not just a celebration of the Marioverse, but also a celebration of the extended Marioverse.  So I'd include more characters from the Wario and DK series.  Without further ado, here's my list:

LIGHT
Toad
Toadette
Little Yoshi
Koopa Troopa
Koopa Paratroopa
Kamek
Kammy
Diddy Kong
Dixie Kong
Spitz

MEDIUM
Mario
Luigi
Peach
Daisy
Yoshi
Boshi
Bowser Jr.
Professor E. Gadd
Captain Syrup
Mona

HEAVY
Bowser
King Boo
Rosalina
Wario
Waluigi
Dribble
Donkey Kong
Kiddy Kong
Krunch
K. Rool (preferably in a racer outfit)

You probably noticed the lack of Birdo.  I just don't understand why Birdo is often paired as Yoshi's partner; as far as I recall I don't think Birdo is even described as a dinosaur in any official media!  I'd much rather see Little Yoshi from Tetris Attack paired with the dino rather than a random Super Mario Bros. 2 boss.  I was also considering putting in the Shroobs as rivals to the Toads, but I wasn't sure if they would be 'significant' enough.  And in a way the Koopa Troopas could be considered their rivals.  Well, enough blabbering from me.  What would YOU change about Mario Kart, from characters, items, tracks, or anything in particular?

Mario Chat / Donkey Kong Country Returns

I'm a huge fan of the old DKCs so, needless to say, I'm really excited about this one.  I just hope there may be a some more returning Kong family members and Kremlings!

Game Help / Mysterious Mailtoad
« on: January 30, 2010, 03:00:35 PM »
Does anybody know how Mailtoad's free 1-Ups work in Super Mario Galaxy?

Here's my situation: my file was setup so that every time I started, Mailtoad would be there to offer me the free 1-Ups.  I eventually decided to play around and max out my Star Bits and get new high scores.  I never talked to Mailtoad, but he eventually lost the free 1-Ups.  Now I'm done playing and would like to setup my file like before so that Mailtoad offers me free lives whenever I select me file.  But he never has the 1-Ups whenever I start.  I figured that the Mailtoad having 1-Ups is simply a rare event that happens by chance.  So I kept playing until I saw that mail symbol over his head.  I saved and quit at that moment, but when I select my file again he STILL doesn't have the letter!  Any ideas how I can replicate what I had before?

Edit:  Nevermind, I somehow got it back.  Don't know why, though!

Mario Chat / Vocal Hypocrisy
« on: January 23, 2010, 05:27:48 PM »
Time after time creative minds at Nintendo have explained that Mario is a silent protagonist so as to allow the player to take up the role of the character and use his or her imagination to create the personality, thus immersing the player into the imaginative world.  I've never quite agreed with this notion; wouldn't the existence of a main character destroy the immersion?  Not everyone can relate to a short, fat, hairy man, so why not just play an adventure game as your Mii?  I feel that two relatively recent Mario releases, Super Paper Mario and Bowser's Inside Story, have especially highlighted the hypocrisy of the silent protagonist.

In Super Paper Mario, you start off as Mario who mostly remains silent in the game as usual.  So when you later unlock Peach and Bowser and play as them, the consistent thing to do to keep the player immersed within the game's universe would be to have them become silent protagonists as well.  On the contrary, the game developers allow Peach and Bowser to maintain their voices.  Does your immersion in the game honestly shatter when Peach or Bowser open their mouths and speak a few lines of dialogue?  Same thing in Bowser's Inside Story.  When you switch to Bowser, the Koopa king continues to boast, give threats, etc.  You cannot convince me that the game's world would have been more immersive without that characterization!

Do you find that giving playable non-Mario characters a voice destroys immersion?  If not, doesn't this throw a monkey wrench, or at least complicate, the philosophy behind the silent protagonist?

On a slightly related note, consider the Mii.  The Mii, what is quite literally the empty vessel for the player, is given a voice in Mario Kart Wii.  I hate my Mii's voice!  When I play as my Mii, I cannot help but think, "Oh yeah, that's not really me playing.  That's just my Mii."  Doesn't this vocal hypocrisy just drive you mad?!

Mario Chat / Yoshi's Cookie Inquiry
« on: December 03, 2009, 07:03:57 PM »
I remember enjoying the puzzle game Yoshi for the NES, so I didn't hesitate downloading it when it came out on the Virtual Console.  I never got a chance to try out Yoshi's Cookie and have realized that it has been out on the Virtual Console.  Before downloading it, however, I just wanted to ask if there are significant differences between the NES and SNES versions of the game, besides graphics and music.  Would it be worth waiting for a possible SNES release on the Virtual Console?

Mario Chat / Should the 1-Up Mushroom just die?
« on: November 09, 2009, 05:30:02 PM »
Really, think about it.

The only real threat of losing all your lives in games anymore is to be sent back to the title screen.  And then you just select your file again and continue playing.  Is there really a point in having this coin-eating arcade tradition continue to pursue on home console games?

I remember the first time I 'died' in Donkey Kong 64.  I was a bit surprised at first that there was no life counter, but then I liked it.  There's no need to tediously rack up on lives just so you don't technically 'lose' the game.  The only real penalty for failing a mission is that you have to try again.

But I can see how some people may want to keep 1-Up Mushrooms around for nostalgia.  Do you think maybe 1-Up Mushrooms can stay around, but just have a different role?  Maybe they can fully recover the playable character?  Well, either way, it doesn't look like 1-Up Mushrooms will be dying anytime soon as they show up in the trailers for New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Mario Chat / TSMBSS! Lost Episodes
« on: November 05, 2009, 10:54:08 AM »
As a fan of the old Mario cartoons, it's great having all the box sets.  But I'm still missing something...the lost live-action skits of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!  I've found a few of the episodes on the internet, but am still missing the following shorts:

Mommies Curse
Tutti Frutti, Oh Mario
The Magic Love
Treasure of the Sierra Brooklyn
Tutti Frutti Mario (not sure if this is a repeat in Mario Wiki or a separate skit)
George Washington Slept Here

In a semi-related note, I'm also looking for these episodes of the Donkey Kong Country TV series:

Speed
Watch the Skies
Baby Kong Blues
To the Moon Baboon
Message in a Bottle Show

If anyone can tell me where I can find these lost episodes, it would be greatly appreciated.  I know there is a rule on this forum against sharing copyright materials like MP3s, but I didn't think this would apply since none of these episodes are available to purchase on DVD.  But if the moderators feel that this topic is inappropriate, I understand that this topic should be closed.

Mario Chat / SMB3 VS. SMW
« on: November 01, 2009, 07:24:40 PM »
Both Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World are often referred to as Mario's best in 2D platforming, and rightfully so.  Both games are huge leaps in the genre.  But which one is your favorite?

Notice I did not say which one do you think is "better."  I think that comparing the two now, Super Mario World's gameplay, with its expansive map and branching pathways, make it a clear winner.  Despite this, however, I find that I still favor Super Mario Bros. 3.  Why?  I think it has to do with a combination of many elements.  There is simply something about Super Mario Bros. 3, it's setting, atmosphere, and overall mood, that just puts a bigger smile on my face.  Consider the story.  We had to rescue the kings and restore peace to the entire Mushroom World!  The princess wasn't even captured until later as a plot twist!  I thought this was a very epic story for a Mario game, especially for an NES Mario game!  Super Mario World's story wasn't quite as hooking for me.

Which is probably why I favor Super Mario Bros. 3.  To me, the game just has more magical moments.  Who could forget discovering the White Toad Houses, turning the Hammer Bros. into treasure ships, consistently finding new powerups like the Hammer Bros. suit and the Takooni Suit, and encountering Kuribo's Shoe, among other things?  At least for me, Super Mario World's list does not go on as long.  And who could forget the Chain Chomps, Boos, and Thwomps?  Believe it or not, at one time these were all INTRODUCED into the Mario series, and now they've become nearly as classic as Goombas and Koopa Troopas.

The battle between Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World kind of resembles the battle between Donkey Kong Country 2 and Donkey Kong Country 3.  While Donkey Kong Country 3 wins in the gameplay department, Donkey Kong Country 2's story and atmosphere makes it much more memorable.  Donkey Kong Country 2 features a pirate-themed adventure where the heroes invade enemy territory to rescue Donkey Kong.  Donkey Kong Country 3 felt more like "let's take a nature walk!"  Not as memorable.  Well, at this point I'm just rambling.  So, what do you say?
