Title: AP: Michael Jackson has died
Post by: Super-Jesse on August 31, 2007, 07:06:11 PM
LONDON, England (AP) -- Michael Jackson, a leading world beer critic who praised the brews of Belgium and acknowledged he would never be as famous as "that Michael Jackson," has died. He was 65.

Jackson, known as "the beer hunter," died Thursday of a heart attack at his home in west London. His body was found by his house cleaner, Paddy Gunningham, his long-term partner, said Friday.

She said he had kept writing and traveling, despite suffering from Parkinson's disease, and that he planned to write a book about the ailment.

"He was simply the best beer writer we've ever known," said Tim Hampson, chairman of the British Guild of Beer Writers.

"He told wonderful stories about beer, breweries and far away places. He told the story of beer through people, and he was humorous and erudite at the same time," Hampson told The Associated Press.

Jackson especially loved Belgian brews. His books "The Great Beers of Belgium" and "World Guide to Beer" introduced them to many export markets, including the United States.

By identifying beers by their flavors and styles, and by pairing them with particular foods and dishes, Jackson helped give birth to a renaissance of interest in beer and breweries worldwide that began in the 1970s, including the North American microbrewery movement.

His TV documentary series, "The Beer Hunter" -- which popularized his nickname -- was filmed around the world and shown in 15 countries.

He worked as a beer critic for more than 30 years, writing in newspapers and gastronomic magazines, holding seminars and giving speeches, appearing on U.S. talk shows and writing books about beer and whiskeys published in 18 languages.

Jackson knew he would never be as famous as Michael Jackson the rock star, and that was reflected on the beer critic's Web site. "Hello, my name is Michael Jackson. No, not that Michael Jackson, but I am on a world tour. My tour is in pursuit of exceptional beer. That's why they call me the Beer Hunter," it says.

Technically the title isn't misleading. :P

But I was definitely thinking something else.

Lord, say it ain't so... As weird as he was, Wacko Jacko was undoubtedly one of the greatest musical geniuses of the twentieth century. If the news is true, this weekend I'll dangle an infant over a hotel balcony in the legend's memory. Goodbye, sweet king.

Of pop.

I'm holding out a little bit of hope that it's just TMZ being a tabloid, but they're probably not.

LA Times is reporting he's dead now, but CNNBRK says sources say he's in a coma. The link to their sources isn't working, though.

EDIT: Or maybe the LA Times is the one reporting he's in a coma. Twitter isn't always the most reliable source of information.

EDIT: It looks like pretty much everyone's confirming it now. Apparently he was in a coma about an hour ago, but was pronounced dead at the hospital about twenty minutes ago.

It's a shame that a music genius like Jackson had to descend into madness and then die.

I'm not sure what's worse: MJ dying, or the entire human race's collective IQ dropping a hundred points from everyone being an ******* about it.

He's been immortalized by his music. Although this is quite sad, he'll never be forgotten.

I mourn Michael Jackson the entertainer, but not Michael Jackson the, well... you know. Or, rather, I mourn him in a very different way. My arguement has been that, pedophile or not, the guy still did some really crazy stuff. Whether he molested any kids can be debated, but there's certifiable evidence to suggest that he nearly removed his nose, had plans to build a laser-shooting robot of himself in the desert, and wanted to make a leprechaun-based theme park in Ireland--among other things.

It's an odd feeling, though, knowing that my generation will probably be the last to make Michael Jackson Jokes, just as a generation or two before us were the last to appreciate him as a legitimate music artist. He's been entertaining people for years, intentionally and otherwise, and I guess I (and others) assumed he'd become some immortal figure, destined to enrich humor and tabloids forever.

I'm sure I'll think of more to say later once the shock has worn off (wow, Farah Fawcett and now this? One more celeb gone and we'll have a Watchmen-size conspiracy on our hands, hopefully minus the giant squid-monster) but for now, I really just want to play Moonwalker for the first time.

Regardless of what he did or didn't do, PL is right [EDIT: mostly about MJ being immortalized by his music, less about ripping nensondubois to shreds]. Michael Jackson was one of the greatest musicians in history. Worse, he was just about to launch an international fifty-show tour. Really, MJ's passing nearly ranks equally alongside Elvis Presley's and John Lennon's also-sudden deaths, irrespective of whether you appreciate their music or not.

You know, I wasn't really around back when he was being famous for being an awesome singer, but after finally listening to some of his songs a year or two ago and reading his Wikipedia page yesterday, I've definitely become a fan. They better do a [darn] good job on his biopic.

I generally don't pay attention to the lyrics in music, but I at least found his stuff to be pretty catchy. His dancing was great too.

Anyway, I really don't have anything insightful to say. I just watched the episode of AVGN where he talks about the Michael Jackson game for the Genesis as well as the episode of The Simpsons with the guy that claims to be Michael Jackson (Season 3, "Stark Raving Dad").

If he and his former wife, Lisa Marie Presley, were to have had any kids, that child would have been the single greatest musician in freakin' human history. That is, of course, provided that the child wouldn't have spontaneously exploded upon birth due to his or her sheer genetically-inherited  awesomeness.

Considering how young some of these artists are starting in music these days (especially those from Disney), we'd have probably been hearing or close to hearing this new artist right now.  Heck, MJ himself was famous at a younger age than that.

Likening Michael Jackson to Disney's studio-manufactured teenybopper groups is a practice which one shan't partake in. There haven't been any genuinely talented manufactured bands since the Monkees disbanded back whenever. The Jackson 5 was a rarity in that its success with such young members wasn't the product of corporate superficiality, but instead of authentic musical talent (and some promotion from Diana Ross of the Supremes, but still.).

I'll never forget the time he leaned forward to look past his lawyer and directly at me in the jury stand.

Say what?! Did we miss something here?

I was most definitely a very serious matter.  I didn't say much back then because we were under a court order not to discuss the case and had to be on a media blackout.  Here are two posts I made that might have given people not in the know a clue:

Screech, I mentioned Pac Man and hope they will do it.

The Big Boo, because of the recent Michael Jackson court case in Santa Maria, Ca (where I live) we will not be 'doing' him.

Lizard Dude, good suggestions, but we did Ice last year.

Deezer, I forgot about that one.  It is a must.  Thanks.
I hope to be able to go this year.  The manager at my local GameStop wanted to hire me for the holiday season, but I flew home for a couple of weeks over the holidays and didn't have time.  Now that I may have jury duty I may not have the days to miss work anyway.  (I can't talk about any case I may be on, but will simply say that I live in Santa Maria, Ca.)  Maybe I can work at GameStop this summer and will be able to miss a few days of school/work.   Aside from going to E3 the thing I want most is a SDK for the Nintendo DS.
From Wikipedia:  "Jackson was arraigned on January 16, 2004, at the court of Santa Maria." ... "The jury selection for the jury trial started on January 31, 2005."

It was a surreal time, but on a more positive note here are some pictures of his life and career:  http://blogs.denverpost.com/captured/2009/06/26/the-life-and-career-of-michael-jackson-in-photos/

They left out pictures of him in his PJ's the day he showed up late for court.  The judge was not at all happy and we were all tired of having to just sit there quietly.

At the trial against Vince Offer for beating up that hooker, I remember Vince looked straight at me in the jury stand, eyes full of anger, and picked up a small doll, strangled it violently, and then pointed to me and the doll to show that the doll represented me. No one else seemed to notice, and the doll disappered shortly thereafter.

Heck, that child would have burst forth from the womb singing. By the way, isn't it curious that none of Jackson's three children look even remotely black? Despite his pigment-diminishing "skin disorder", he was still a genetically African-American man. Just sayin'.

I think it's the elephant in the room at this point that those probably aren't actually his genetic offspring. Sperm donation and covert adoption happen.

It's just genetics. Whites are dominant, I guess. Gregor Mendel loves to keep the little guy down.
Title: Re: AP: Michael Jackson has died
Post by: Luigison on July 02, 2009, 09:18:02 AM
I think darker pigmentation is dominate in most cases.  Besides, there is no such thing as a black or white race.  Those are generalized terms that are not based on genetics.  The terms Sub-Saharan African and European are probably more appropriate, but I haven't kept up with genetic ancestry since I'm more concerned with genetic predisposition for disease.  However, the white elephant in the room, so to speak, may be Dr. Arnold Klein.
Title: Re: AP: Michael Jackson has died
Post by: Weegee on July 02, 2009, 11:04:21 AM
Sub-Saharan African = Black
European = White
Political correctness = Tyranny with manners

Happy now? Besides, it don't matter if he's black or white. On that note, I believe it would be appropriate to share CrossEyed's heartfelt call for sympathy towards MJ's passing here:

If we don't have the compassion to remember MJ sympathetically, a tragic figure whose childhood was stolen from him by a violent, avaricious father, whose pleas for help were ignored by those who should have known better and gotten him therapy, and whose attempts to reclaim his youth were perverted by opportunists and sensationalists, then I hope we can at least have the restraint and respect to remember him for being among the greatest music performers in human history, and not take the easy road of making hackneyed jokes about accusations that probably aren't even true  -- accusations that, along with the popular belief in them, contributed greatly to the stress that may well have killed him. It's the same courtesy we extend to Elvis.

Molesting children is certainly heinous, but if there's one thing that's worse, it's falsely accusing someone of it for your own benefit, knowing that a mark like that can never be erased from someone's public record. I don't know which of those happened, but taking into consideration the entirety of MJ's life, attested to by multiple sources, as well as the fact that he was acquitted of all charges, I'm leaning toward the latter, enough so that I don't want to risk being on the wrong side. I mentioned this before, but there's a guy who lives near us who, when he was about 19 years old, slept with a girl who said she was 18, while happening to be carrying his gun that he was fully licensed to have and everything. Turns out the girl lied; she was actually 17, and because of that one lie, he is now registered as a level 3 sex offender for the rest of his life. He has to stay a certain distance away from schools, he has to register his location every time he moves, his name shows up on that big online database with equal footing to people who've actually done horrible things, with no further explanation, and he will never be looked at the same way, not by employers, not by parents, not even by his friends. Crap like that can completely ruin someone's life. He's pretty optimistic about it, I think largely because he's gotten saved now, as we say, is really active in his church and has some hope to look to and hold onto, but for a lesser man than him, something like that could just totally destroy you. One person lied and got a label slapped on him, and most people only see the label. If MJ really was innocent, then he was in the exact same situation, except a thousand times worse. He was accused of far worse acts, he was found not guilty in court but no one cared, he had the whole world looking at him, most of them scorning him, and he fell from a much higher height. I know firsthand a small taste of what it's like to have you childhood stolen from you, and I now know secondhand a bit of what it's like to have the lies of someone you thought was your friend destroy your reputation. If those are what MJ went through, then I really feel for him, and I hate that I wasn't mature enough to do so when he was alive. Everything about his life, it seems, was a classical tragedy.

If we aren't open-minded enough to remember him that way, then I at least hope that 50 years from now we'll remember him for his contributions to the entertainment world. Elvis isn't remembered for being fat, he's remembered for being the biggest sensation of all time. Likewise, MJ should be remembered for inventing the modern music video, selling nearly a billion albums, transcending racial boundaries (though not knocking them down permanently, unfortunately; society today is far more segregated today, largely by choice) and being probably, thanks to the internet and the fragmentation of society, the last true cultural phenomenon -- the last star whom everyone loved, everyone wanted to meet, everyone knew all the words to all his songs without even trying. The closest thing we've had to him since then is Obama, and even he hasn't been too great at curbing racial divisiveness or getting everyone to like him.

It's really pretty amazing that back when he was real big in the 80s and early 90s, and even back into the 70s to a certain extent, race was never really an issue. White kids didn't think it was scandalous that they were listening to songs sung by a black guy, as kids from the 50s and 60s may have, but nor did they think it was specially cool just because of that, unlike so many Fubu-wearing rich white kids today who like to pretend they're gangsters because they listen to music made by other people pretending to be gangsters. People just listened to MJ because they liked his music, and even though I was too young to appreciate his music back then, I think he was still a major reason why I, a middle class whiter-than-cheap-flavorless-generic-rice kid born in North Carolina, grew up watching TV shows with mostly black casts and never gave it a second thought. It seems like most of that air of racial irrelevance is gone now, sucked away by those of the older generations whose careers depend on division thriving, but for a while there, it never felt weird or uncomfortable or forced or unnatural that we were all watching Sister Sister, the Cosby Show, Family Matters, and the one where my mom got scared and said you're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel-Air. I begged and pleaded with her day after day but she packed my suitcase and sent me on my way. She gave me a kiss and then she gave me my ticket, I put my walkman on and said might as well kick it. First class, yo this is bad, drinking orange juice out of a champagne glass? Is this what the people of Bel-Air Living like? Hmm, this might be alright. But wait I hear there're prissy, bourgeois and all that, is this the type of place that they should send this cool cat? I don't think so, I'll see what I get there, hope they're prepared for the prince of Bel-Air. Well, the plane landed and when I came out there was a dude looked like a cop standing there with my name out. I ain't trying to get arrested yet, I just got here! I sprang with the quickness like lightning, disappeared. I whistled for a cab and when it came near the license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror. If anything I can say this cab was rare, but I thought nah forget it, yo homes to Bel-Air. I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8, yelled to the cabbie yo homes smell ya later. I looked at my kingdom, I was finally there to sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel-Air.

Getting Bel-Aired hurts my feelings.

And Keenan & Kel was the best show of all time. I watched it as a kid before even knowing that there were such things as race.

All it's missing is Vincent Price's ghoulish outro. Tres magnifique.

I stopped watching them when I realized that show was not real life.

The irony is enough to make anyone cringe... Wow indeed. However, such speculation is nothing new in terms of the Jackson saga:

If Luigison, there's anything else that's ever made me feel so happy and so sad simultaneously, I can't recall it.

So Michael Jackson was predicted to at age 40 turn into Lando Calrissian?

My subconscious mind = read.

This is all even more ironic considering 1986 was about when he started going white.
