Title: Weirdest Mario Power-up
Post by: Corleone on December 19, 2007, 05:15:49 PM
What is the oddest Mario power-up that exists?

It's a tie between Frog and Tanooki Mario; I never imagined Mario/Luigi dressing up like cats, frogs, etc. Plus, it looks pretty uncomfortable. A full cat suit in a castle full of boiling lava, or crouching most of the way through a level seems...

The Tanooki Suit is based off the tanuki in Japanese mythology, which is based off the raccoon dog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raccoon_Dog).

I thought the tanuki was a wino with huge balls, but hey, different strokes.

Hello, Kuribo's Shoe, anybody? That's as weird as it gets.

The tanuki is depicted in some parts of Japanese mythology as having oversized testicles and carrying a jug of sake.

Now there's a powerup for ya.

It's pretty common knowledge as far as Japanese mythology goes. Thing is, only the part about the wine is made up.

I think that the weirdest power-up would have to be...the...um...(thinking)...(thinking more)...(brain fart)...Frog Suit.  I know that the Frog Suit was already said, but how in the world could Mario hop around like that? Wouldn't it hurt his legs after a while with him jumping up and down like that? Don't answer that. I know that it's a Mario game, but still...it's weird.

The suit makes him do it so I don't think it's exactly all his leg muscles.

Well that and I don't think the tanukis attacked people using their testicles as weapons.

I wouldn't exactly consider to be normal those Rabbit Ears that allow Mario to float in 6GC.

Those are much more whack than the Frog Suit. I mean, a frog swims well. A Frog Mario swims well. That makes sense.

Floating Bunny Rabbit Mario? Now THAT is crazy.

Yeah, you don't really see Bunny Mario anymore... I guess SML2 wasn't popular enough to warrant that (that, and Nintendo is always coming up with new flight suits. Raccoon, bunny, cape, bee...).

Where'd the leaf symbol idea come from, anyway? I mean, a severed raccoon tail isn't too appealing, but what do you think was the thought process behind that--raccoons live in the woods, and there's leaves there?
Title: Re: Weirdest Mario Power-up

Tanuki(e?)s use transform leafs into thing, namely money, but the leaf power-up seems to be an inversion of this.

Think Animal Crossing (except Tom is a Tanuki, and not a raccoon, in japan)

Oh, yeah, the leaves (first time I played that, I threw away a fridge, or something, because I was like, "that's not a fridge, it's a leaf!")...

Hey, I know it's fun to be a d**k and all, but I read pretty much everything on this site before I became a member (especially the Japanese-to-English ones)--I just didn't think of going back to an article I hadn't looked at in over a year to answer some question about leaves I made after Christmas dinner.

There's no need to get defensive. Throwing asterisks in my general direction (or Chupperson's) does not intimidate, insult or infuriate me. It was just a detail that I'd imagine one would remember when considering leaves and Mario. Didn't mean for anyone to decide to pick a fight or something. Calm down.

That's always kind of annoyed me.  You'd think they'd come up with one flying power and stick with it.

Oddly enough, my friend swore he once played a stand-up arcade version of "World" where there was raccoon power instead of cape.  But, he had a tendency to make stuff up.

It would be like removing helicopters from the world because we have airplanes. How silly would that be?! I think there should be many ways that Mario can traverse the sky, the coolest of which, is, without a doubt, Raccoon Mario.

My reasoning was that they invented mushrooms, and kept them for many games.  Same with flowers.  So I would have thought that when they invented leaves/racoon power they would have kept it for subsequent games, too.
Title: Re: Weirdest Mario Power-up

While the Super Mushroom and Fire Flower have remained unchanged, their function alters a bit in some games. i.e The mega effect cause by a Super Mushroom in SM64DS and time Fire Flower in SMG. The flight power ups, though, almost never function in the same manner.
Title: Re: Weirdest Mario Power-up
Post by: The Chef on January 05, 2008, 12:20:08 PM
I one day wish to see a Mario game that has all of the different flight power-ups available.  Let's look at the data:

Super Leaf
-First of many
-Gives Mario an added appendage in the form of a tail.
-Requires full running speed to work.
-Can't fly as far as it can fly high.
-Also enables rapid-fire floating to the ground
-Serves as an extra method of attacking/ breaking things.

P Wing
-Actually the same thing as the Super Leaf except running is always fully charged so you can fly whenever you want.

Tanooki Suit
-Full body version of the Super Leaf that adds one more function: turning into an impervious statue.

Cape Feather
-Once again requires full running speed.
-Serves as a method of attack with a larger radius and more functions than the tail.
-Allows floating by holding the button instead of rapidly pressing it.
-Can't fly too high, but once airborne, can stay in air almost infinitely with the para-sailing maneuver.
-Mario can also make earthquakes by diving headfirst out of the sky.
-Floating mechanic can be carried over when riding Yoshi.

P Balloon
-Inflates Mario, allowing him to be steered anywhere on the screen.
-Runs out after a certain amount of time.
-Time limit prevents going very high or far.

Super Carrot
-Once again gives Mario added appendages, this time in the form of bunny ears.
-Cannot actually fly, but can floating.
-Floating is more in-depth, as you can float longer but slower by holding the button , but can also float shorter but faster by pressing the button rapidly.
-I remember it making Mario's regular jumps higher, but I could be wrong.

Wing Cap
-Added appendages include wings on Mario's head.
-Once again a limited time power-up.
-Flight is the most in-depth to date, as it was a 3D title. Mario can fly just like an airplane as long as he has a sufficient take-off method.

Personally, I think the Cape needs it's own P Wing treatment, though that may actually be sort of unfair. I also think that full-fledged Bunny Suit would compliment the Carrot quite nicely. Not sure what purpose it would serve, though. Lastly, I think it would be cool to see how the Wing Cap would work in a 2D game, or how the other power-ups would work in a 3D game. Maybe the Wing Cap could lose the time limit or something. The possibilities never seem to run out, do they?

Anyway, I also forgot to mention that the Leaf and the Feather both pop out of blocks differently, specifically shooting up and floating down gently. The Carrot on the other hand just sits there like a Fire Flower, waiting to be plucked.

Weirdest Mario Power-up has to be the mini shroom that makes you shrink. The spring shroom (smg), the P-Baloon, and Bee Mario are lol. What does the P stand for in P-balloon. The power flower in SM64DS is weird. It effects everyone in a different way.

My answer has already been mentioned and re-mentioned by people who didn't catch it the first time around, so I'll show some restraint and not be the 12th person to say "bunny ears."  Some other power-ups that crossed my mind include:  the Koopa shell (NSMB), the frog suit, and--oh!  If power-ups from YI can be included, just about everything in that game is weird... Transforming Yoshi into a train?  Wha--?
Title: Re: Weirdest Mario Power-up
Post by: penguinwizard on January 29, 2008, 01:02:16 AM
Hey, the Bunny ears were cool.

- I'd agree with the frog suit, just seemed out of place somehow.

- I'd like to say the Tanooki suit. I know I'd normally say it's cool, but in hindsight, it really wasn't that different from Raccoon Mario (and turning into a statue didn't do much good for me), so I was left wondering what the point of it was.

- Kuribo's Shoe is certainly strange, but an awesome power (I refuse to call it Goomba's Shoe).

- Fire Mario in Super Mario Land 2. Why is that strange? Because I could never figure out what that slanted thing on Mario's head was. Made me think Mario was wearing a turban or something.

- "Spring Mario" from Super Mario Galaxy screenshots. Toy Box Galaxy I believe, where Mario turns into a spring. What the heck?

- If I can include a powerup from Wario Land 2... well, just about any powerup there will do. Puffy-Face Wario and Zombie Wario come to mind.

Though P in P-Wing actually stands for Para (as in Paragoomba/beetle's Wing).

- Fire Mario in Super Mario Land 2. Why is that strange? Because I could never figure out what that slanted thing on Mario's head was. Made me think Mario was wearing a turban or something.
In case you still haven't figured it out, it's a feather.

- Kuribo's Shoe is certainly strange, but an awesome power (I refuse to call it Goomba's Shoe).

But Kuribos = Goombas, so I don't see what the problem is.

Anyway, anyone think that the feather-cap and the red fireball suit have any differences, or was it just because of the Game Boy's limited pallete?

Definitely.  They're one of my favorite power-ups, actually, and the one I'd also hope to get during roulette.  Still, they are undeniably weird--not necessarily a bad thing...

And the "P" stands for "para???"  That's not nearly as cool as "power."
Title: Re: Weirdest Mario Power-up

Para-Balloon would make sense, though. I think the P changes meaning, depending on what it's adorned upon..

Para-Wing sounds a bit better than Power-Wing, but the latter still makes sense. Para-Balloon or Power-Ballon would both work, but P-Switch.. I believe that is Power Switch, because Para-Switch would make absolutely zero sense.

None of the P-Switches ever flew (unless you carried/threw them really high in SMW). XD

Also, Para Wing matches up perfectly with Paratroopa's kart name in Double Dash!!, which probably means that was what Nintendo intended it to be.

Either that, or a scary coincidence.

Looking at the Japanese versions, the P in P-Switch, P-Meter, and P-Balloon stands for Power.
The P in P-Wing stands for Patapata's (Pata is the Japanese equivalent of Para; e.g. Patapata = Parakoopa, Patakuribo = Paragoomba, Patametto = Parabeetle).

I'd say the weirdest would be Kuribo's Shoe.

Superball = prototype of eggs in Yoshi's Island?

Well, they both bounce off of stuff and collect coins. Am I right?

Could very well have been the inspiration. I always thought the Wing Cap was inspired by Bunny Mario from SML2, so maybe these things happen more often than we think.

I liked Kuribo's Shoe. Wait, if he's inside a shoe, doesn't it get all stinky?

I'd say that the weirdest power-up would have to be The Koopa Shell suit in New Super Mario Brothers. The Koopas have been Mario's most bitter enemies since the Mario Bros. Arcade game. Over time it's evolved so that you can pick up and throw their shells, ride on them, and whatever. But that suit actually turned into a shell and you got to experience what it felt like to be kicked around after all of those years.

Well technically, in Mario Bros., the enemies weren't actually Koopas, but "Shellcreepers". But it's a similar concept either way.
