Title: If Mario wasn't a plumber...
Post by: Mario Maniac on July 02, 2008, 04:00:23 PM
If Mario wasn't a plumber, do you think the Mushroom Kingdom would still be filled with pipes?

What if Mario was still a carpenter like in his Wrecking Crew days? Would the Mushroom Kingdom be filled with... cranes?

Giant saws... no wait, those are already in SMW...

Giant hammers. Those saved my life from the days of Donkey Kong.

They made him a plumber to justify the pipes. I highly doubt not doing that would make much of a difference.

Good point.  Have you ever seen Mario actually use a wrench or a plunger or any other tools like that in the video games?

Maybe it was another programming shortcut. Maybe they couldn't draw cranes back in those days. Well, they could, but walking through giant pipes is cooler.

Well, the way I see it is that Mario Bros. took place in... a sewer, basically. With that game being Mario's first real game, pipes became synonymous with him, and SMB followed suit (never mind the fact that, aside from mold, fungi don't exactly have much of a reason to be associated with pipes). I guess Mario's thinking must be "well, it's a good thing I know my way around pipes, because this place is full of them!"

Of course. That's like saying "If Bill Gates didn't invent Windows, would our computers still have internet?"

Uh, the Internet was around before Windows.

...Wait, I guess that is what you're saying.

Windows were around long before the internet. Houses would've been stuffy otherwise.

Well, the main thing here is that... it's not like Mario being a plumber caused the Mushroom Kingdom to have pipes. Of course, it seems we are discussing this from the perspective of the game designers, not in-game canon, in which case his plumb-dom is indeed a direct link to the Kingdom's pipe overload.

If I remember right, he did in Paper Mario: TTYD, to unclog a toilet.
