So, what's the verdict? Personally, from what I've experienced with the demo's single-player, this game rules hard, and can only get better with human players. Basically, it's what you'd expect from Valve: awesome graphics, control, gameplay, difficulty balance, and system requirements (Source Engine FTW). And the game really does feel different each time you play. Areas that were once swarmed with zombies are eerily different the second time through, and various crazy-powerful zombies like Tanks and Witches appear at various unpredictable locations - or not at all. And teamwork really is required to survive. In fact, I intend to buy a good microphone exactly for this game.
-
I enjoyed the demo, but this is exactly the kind of game that would give me nightmares. Also, playing it on expert was really irritating, especially with incompetent teammates.
Some things I liked about it:
- Visually, above even HL2E2
- No more floating camera; you've got legs
- Simple, easy to use inventory
- Horde swarms were exciting but not impossible to escape from
-
I've only had a chance to play through the first half of the single-player portion, but I could tell just from that how awesome this game is. However, I probably won't be purchasing it for two reasons. One, Internet connection...blah blah blah, no multiplayer. Two, my computer barely meets the basic requirements, which are higher than any of the other Source games I've played (as in, the minimum requirements are equal to the recommended requirements for TF2, and I had to set the former to the absolute minimum for it to run well, including resolution).
-
Personally, I think the game would benefit from a few more horror-esque bits, as I never came across or have heard of any scenarios where you would barricade a fort or anything of the sort, although I think that might bog down the game's flow.
Basically, I'm counting the days until a multiplayer fort-barricade game comes out.
-
The glimpse of gameplay given by the demo has made me really excited about Left 4 Dead. I had already decided to buy it before the demo released but it was still great. The only downside to the game is that so few of my Steam mates are getting it.
-
I don't have a PS3/360, but even if I did... I dunno. The multiplayer aspect sounds promising, but if you've played one game with twenty-somethings fighting off deformed dead people, you've played them all.
-
Also, for people playing the game on PC: type openserverbrowser into the developer console to look at servers like the other multiplayer Valve games.
ShadowBrain: There's a third option (http://store.steampowered.com/).
-
Oh, yeah, forgot about that... well, I'm a console man, anyway.

Not every console.
-
I initially had my doubts, but Left 4 Dead is unlike any other undead-shooting-game I've ever played before. Even the normal zombies seem different, with their constant scrambling around like drunken track runners.
-
I wasn't impressed by the demo, but I suppose it was entertaining. I liked how weak and stupid the zombies were... during a wave, I could take out my shotgun and pump it until the zombies stopped coming. I also liked how you could go at whatever pace you wanted. I could run around and blow zombies' heads off with the shotgun, or I could sneak around quietly and pick them off from a distance with my (unlimited ammo!!) pistol.
But I still probably won't get it. Not immediately, anyway.

Dude, the multiplayer is the game, and from what I've played of it, it's nothing like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Dead Rising, or Half-Life.
If I have one thing to be disappointed about, it's that I likely won't have many (any?) people to play it with on day one. I gotta get more of my friends turned onto Steam.

I'm finding L4D to have marvelous propensity for gameplay-created narrative. Three examples:
My very first time playing and it's on No Mercy. We get to the final wait for the chopper and I don't know what to expect. We battle off the hordes but things get to going badly just as the chopper's landing. I then realize I'm the only one still standing and madly run to the chopper, desperately meleeing zombies out of my way. I make it as the sole survivor and feel awesome. Then the "credits" start to roll and I see "In memory of" and I'm all, did someone at Valve die during making this or what? Then it scrolls up with the names of the other 3 players and I have a good lol.
It's the end of Death Toll and things are again going badly. One person's dead, one person's on the boat, I'm running across the dock nearly to the boat, and the last person's still on land. A couple steps away from safety, I turn around to see the straggler Zoey go down to a swarm of Infected, pistols still blasting in defiance. I'm low on health but I figure I should be able to manage a rescue since it's just some normal zombies. I run back to the incapped Zoey and promptly get my legs shot, downing me. The lone boatman sails off...
It's Chapter 4 of Death Toll, which always seems hard. Three of us are alive, all with 1 HP. We round a corner and see the safe house door. No zombies are in sight. Just as the dude in the lead gets to the door, a Tank hurtles out from the alley to the right, instantly killing him. The other survivor and I scream and run, but we both get knocked down. :(
-
The boat sequence in Death Toll rewls. So there we were, fighting off the horde, one dude incapped, one bleeding out with around 60 health dropping fast, and the other two of us with less than 30 health. Just then, as one guy's helping up the incapped guy, a Tank shows up as the boat approaches. We make a mad dash to the boat, shooting like crazy. I saw a fuel canister by the boat. I shot it, and it exploded just as the dude playing as Francis jumped into the boat. So we sail away triumphantly, as the Tank collapses in flames, one meaty arm dangling off the edge of the pier.
I seriously wish L4D had a replay function.
-
I just beat Dead Air with some dudes on advanced; everyone survived at the end. Over 2,000 zombies were harmed in the making of the film and I got the most with 770, also I nailed the most Hunters and Smokers. Tonight I am truly a man.
-
I was thinking about getting Left 4 Dead just because basically anything with zombies is good, but after seeing videos of it, the gameplay looked a little repetitive.
-
It can be, but since each run is randomly generated, and since it's possible to be killed by regular zombies if you act like a weiner and run away from your group, teamwork is the main factor.
-
What it really feels like is doing an MMO instance run, except with fun FPS gameplay instead of boring RPG gameplay. And best of all, people can't memorize and plan each step of the run. A great improvement!
-
Has anyone played Versus much?
I love it and it's a good substitute for a campaign if you don't have an hour and a half of free time (though, the game could run this long if both teams suck at being zombie bosses). My favorite zombie boss is definitely the Smoker. It's so satisfying to snag a survivor from maximum distance when they are trying to get rid of Hunters or fight a Boomer-vomit-summoned horde; even better if it is all happening at once due to great zombie teamwork and execution.
-
I have yet to play versus for...some reason. If I have a choice I'll try being a Hunter or Smoker first. Judging from single-player, Boomers look like ridiculously brittle and easy-to-hit targets.
-
A lot of great tips for playing as the Infected here: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=761708
Focuses on being the Boomer.
-
I hated playing as the Infected until I realized I was basically an infinitely reincarnating suicide bomber with changing abilities.
-
Today I played with this guy named MEATWAD42016. He was hilariously awesome and right when I joined the lobby he was telling how his roommate had just lit a bong off a lamp. We played and had a good fun run of Blood Harvest - Normal, with all 4 people chatting jovially along the way. Everyone stayed for the next match and we did Dead Air - Easy where I got Akimbo Assassin and Unbreakable at the same time.
Another cool thing about MEATWAD42016 is that he never pays for Gold and lives completely off of 2-day trial codes that people he meets in games send him. I'll be sending him my 2 from L4D and Gears 2 and he got a third one from another member of our group. Hilarious.
And a general thing I am growing to love in L4D is all the convoluted schemes people have for trying to get Cr0wnd and they never work. It's the modern-day hiccup remedy. "Yeah I hear I gotta run up shoot two shots from an auto shotgun then pistol the head after she stands up and is 'activated'."
I also love the people with horrendously complicated defense plans for alarms and finales. "Okay you crouch on this piano and cover windows 1, 3, and 4. You circle the house running backwards while the other two cover the west and north sides while he's not on that side. When the radio announces 3/4 fueling we will throw a series of bomb, Molotov, bomb at 5 second intervals..."
And then after about 10 seconds someone's dragged halfway back to the start on a Smoker tongue, someone's chasing that guy, piano guy is being mauled by a swarm and the planner is soloing a Tank.
-
While playing No Mercy on advanced there was a Witch near the water heater on the left, right before you get into the room with the generators. A guy with the auto shotgun very calmly and with no warning to the rest of us walked behind her as she started to stand because of the flashlights and blew her head off from behind getting the Crown'd achievement. I got splattered with Witch head gore and pooped.
-
A couple days ago I got Witch Hunter when a Witch spawned in front of a gatling gun emplacement (she went down in roughly one and a half seconds), and I've given up on Cr0wned since it's nearly impossible for me. Man vs. Tank doubly so (you'd think it'd just come down to molotoving him and then pumping him full of M16 clips, but you'd be wrong).
-
I think a better strat would be Molotov and then run and don't stop running until you hear the bleep bloop.
-
About half an hour ago I tried to do a run for Akimbo Assassin (Death Toll, Easy, single-player; yes, I realize this is the wimpiest way to do so and I apologize). I Inspector Tequila'd my way through the whole campaign, carefully avoiding picking up juicy, delicious primary weapons and savory, sweet thrown weapons. Apparently, though, the game counts fuel canisters and propane tanks as weapons (I know it applies to picking them up and placing them, though whether or not shooting them on the ground counts, I'm not sure), robbing me of my achievement.
GRR >:(
However, I got Toll Collector and No One Left Behind, so it's all good.
-
Last night I was in a party with an actual girl playing Zoey and an actual black guy playing Louis.
-
I played one game where actual white people were playing as Bill, Zoey and Francis.
-
Today I was playing Blood Harvest on advanced and something amusing happened.
Me and three very capable, microphone equipped (this is good for the lulz), strangers were cautiously blasting our way through the map when we got to the end of chapter (?) where you have to cross the long bridge and there's a train car turned safe house at the end. We got horde-spammed about three times near the barn/house right before the bridge so two guys ran back to the barn where there was an ammo pile. I was standing on top of one of the train cars ahead picking off zombies with the hunting rifle when suddenly one of the guys yells, "OH ####!" I turn around and see his tiny, yellow outline wriggling in the embrace of a Smoker's tongue obscured in fog. Everyone was fairly out of reach so he was going to take a lot of damage before anyone got to him. I peered into the fog with my scope and saw a pixel or two of green swirling around above the survivor's yellow outline. I didn't believe it but I took a blind shot into what I perceived as the center of the swirl and was rewarded with a message saying "Daddy TEM killed the Smoker."
This all happened within the space of perhaps three seconds. I promptly pushed the talk button and yelled "FROM DOWNTOWN" at the top of my voice while the other three guys all asked me how in the world I made that shot at the same time.
Later in the same run the final run into the tank/truck thing was pretty intense. We were really spread out in the field so we could take out the tank easier, and one of the guys ended up really far away when the vehicle pulled up. Three of us got in right away but the fourth guy was almost beyond visibility and getting swarmed. One guy timidly asked, perhaps with a tear in his eye, "Is he going to make it?" Once again, my hunting rifle came to the rescue. I scoped and completely tore down the group of zombies surrounding the survivor while a guy got out of the vehicle with an assault rifle cleared out the immediate area. The fourth survivor got into truck, all of the survivors made it. One guy got the achievement for never falling down, and none of us died during the campaign.

I saw a hilarious comment today:
"The Witch is crying because Chicago Ted is in the city."
-
I punched someone off the roof of Mercy hospital as the Tank today. Best feeling in the world.
Edit: I forgot the best part. The guy's message in the chat (he was a noob and wasn't using teamchat) "he punched me off" I like to think his lack of punctuation and capitalization represented his total disbelief at what just happened.
I'm also writing a noob guide for the basic Infected team attack and some other pointers. I'll post it here as well as the L4D forums when it is finished.
-
I'm planning on buying Left 4 Dead sometime in the near future with Christmas money and Golden TEM Point money and whatnot. I hope TEM isn't getting tired of it!
-
Here (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=8746109#post8746109) is the Basic Infected Attack Plan (with extra pointers.)
Edit: I got the CROWND achievement today using the tactic described in the Extra Pointers!!!
Edit2: attached a crazy picture I saw.
-
Well, I have Left 4 Dead now. Not surprisingly, it gave me nightmares. Apparently the Smoker had quite an effect on my subconscious.
-
I guess that means I have to get it now, so all four of us can play.
-
LEFT 4 DEAD GEEEEEEEEEEEET
-
I should be getting it on Monday. :D
-
Me and bobman37 just had a sweet round of L4D. The finale was a little too easy (we were playing on Normal) so in the rush to the rescue vehicle I decided to run out and save the downed bot even though the 3 humans were safely aboard to make it more exciting. The result was me getting the bot up, but then a Tank downing one of the humans and I ran back on the plane screaming for bobman37 to get on so he'd get the achievement. bobman and I escaped while the bot and human died outside.
-
Yeah, I escaped, but barely. I had merely ticks of health left and the horde was swiping at me from behind, hindering my movement. So I turned around, held S and right-click and TEM was shouting "GET ON GET ON" and I was like "I'M GONNA DIE" and I broke free from the horde and got aboard the plane. It was probably the most intense moment of the night.
-
Edit: I forgot the best part. The guy's message in the chat (he was a noob and wasn't using teamchat) "he punched me off" I like to think his lack of punctuation and capitalization represented his total disbelief at what just happened.
I never actually use teamchat since nothing I ever say ever benefits any team.
-
Infected see the Survivor text chat?
-
There's a chat where anyone can see it and a chat where just your team sees it. I think Y is allchat and U is teamchat.
Edit: Oh, I realized I didn't answer LD's question, no they can't.
-
I was playing Versus earlier today and my team was doing our turn as the Infected. We got a Tank on the 4th section of No Mercy where the building is only partially built. He punched one guy clear off and the last standing Survivor was running backwards from the Tank and ran off the edge killing himself. Everyone laughed out loud.
-
Left 4 Dead for PC GET!
...I'm ALWAYS a Boomer in Versus. ALWAYS. It's because I'm fat, huh!?
-
Hey, I love playing Boomer, but I always get a Hunter. It's because I'm always wearing hoodies and jumping on people, probably.
Yesterday something terrible happened. I was on Versus on the Infected team; playing on said team was what sounded like a ten-year-old kid who repeatedly stated he had just gotten Left 4 Dead and referred to his Boomer as a "fatty". And he never spawned; he just sort of followed the action around, declaring how stupid the game was since he couldn't do anything. But before any true hilarity could ensue, I was votekicked.
W
T
F
Votekick me for no reason if you must, but don't do it when there's some hardcore funniness coming. I'll never know what happened next.
Also, I played some co-op where a guy took a twenty-minute smoke break and we all had to huddle up in the safe room guarding his useless Francis while a constant stream of zombies raped us in the doorway.
-
I played a round on No Mercy today and had a few good moments.
We were on one of the middle stages, I don't remember which one. I joined the game midway, so I got thrown in as Bill and there were humans as the other three. When I joined, I was low on ammo, no one had a health pack and everyone was in the orange for health. Needless to say, I was on a team of noobs. I mean, I'm a L4D noob, and these guys sucked harder than I did. Case in point: I told my team to wait for me as I used a healthpack, so of course all three of them run forward in the open, leaving me backed into a corner next to a truck to heal. Just as I get done, I get gangbanged by a smoker on the truck and a hunter that jumped down the hall to my left. I was incapped and halfway dead before my team realized I was back there. No one had pills or a health pack. We ran over toward a building and inside was a health pack. Two of our dudes were in the green, one was high orange and I was blinking flashing gonna-die-now red. So the high orange guy picks up the health pack before I stumble into the building, and I sit in front of him and teamchat "Heal me please". Then I watched as he bent over and first patched up his legs, then his arms, then gave a satisfied "Ahhhhhhhh" and turned around and ran off to catch up. I stood there in kind of stunned silence, then followed him, health dwindling quickly from 20. Across the street was the safe zone. All three of the dudes were in there already and I was crawling along at a leisurely pace, ****ed off at the guy who healed himself first and at the fact that I wasn't gonna live to see the ammo pile. As I was about twenty steps away and with three health left, I was like "NOOOOOOOOO" and made a dive/jump toward the door. I slipped in with one health left. One. Health.
The other really cool part was at the finale, defending the top of the hospital until the chopper arrived. We were doing ok, I was sniping any and all special infected, one guy on the turret, the other two shooting as needed. All of a sudden, all four of us were on the upper sniping level and the horde was swarming below us. A tank arrived and diverted all our concentration to it, so the horde had time to gather. The dead tank fell off the roof and the horde swarmed us just in time for a boomer to blow up. Zombies were everywhere, I ran out of hunting rifle ammo, the chopper arrived and yelled at us to hurry and get in, and me and this other guy died. I switched first person team view on Francis, who was running behind Zoey. They looked like they had a clear path until all of a sudden from both sides of the screen a big horde accompanied by a tank swarmed around Francis, who immediately died. Zoey was inches away from the chopper and turned around to melee the horde for better running and was met by a hunter to the face. No one survived. It was awesome.
-
You can't bleed to death; it will always stop at 1 HP.
-
Earlier I saw a guy join (we'd been playing with three humans and one bot), type "kill" into the console, and leave at the beginning of the final section of No Mercy. Everyone was calling him a noob who didn't know how to play when it was rather obvious he was griefing. Naturally, we lost.
-
Well, today was a fun round of Death Toll. We had mostly competent survivors (except for our Francis who would PURPOSEFULLY ATTACK WITCHES, and he finally got an achievement, hmph.), and we never really got in too deep. On one of the middle stages, though, I (Bill) was left with one health, and still managed to save Zoey from a Smoker, Louis from a Hunter, and melee a Tank to death as he beat Louis near to death. And I still managed to make it to the safe house :D! Later, when we got to the Finale, all was going well. I kept healing people, throwin' pipe bombs, helping bring down tanks. So the boat comes, and as we run to the dock...we all get mauled. By normal infected. And Francis, who was in the green, didn't come to save us, noooo. He just stayed on the boat. He was the only survivor. Ghost of Bill's gonna fix that....
-
Dude today I finally accomplished what I've always wanted to. On No Mercy, the part where the survivors have to cross in front of the gas station, scale the buildings and drop down to the sewer, I spawned as a smoker and camped in the corner of the sewer room. Everyone dropped down, but I snagged the last guy in line and killed him from full health because no one could save him. It was so cool.
-
Ah L4D. My most recent addiction. If any of you own it for the Xbox, I'd be glad to play a match of versus with ya'. ^^
-
Yesterday I was playing with bobman, Captain Jim, and TEM. We were all egging bobman on to go cap a witch with his autoshottie. He was edging closer and closer and we were all telling him he could do it. It looked awesome until the witch wised up and feasted on his entrails.
-
He tried to shoot it from like 5 feet away, I told that man he needed to get real close-like.
There was the other funny time bobman37 got incapped by the Witch when I messed up. We had a good system going where I would shoot the Witch with the hunting rifle from far away and everyone else would start shooting her when she ran at me. Well one of the times we did it I missed the Witch like 5 times in a row and bobman37 thought I was hitting her, he shot her from like ten feet away and she ran at him and gave him a slap. It was pretty funny from my end.
-
Yeah, both times I was thinking "awwww yeeeah this (w)itch is going DOWN" and then I went down and was like "...well (poop)."
Vulgar language is practically a necessity when playing/talking about L4D because you can't help it.
-
I was singing "Smack My (W)itch Up" by The Prodigy whenever I teabagged a witch. For good luck.

All the things LD said were in the thread, did he repeat them on purpose or is it hive mind?

I got Cr0wned today, on my first attempt!

I got Man vs. Tank the other day in the most cowardly way possible (teamkilling all my AI buddies in singleplayer, tov'ing the Tank, and running like hell).

February 7th, 2009 - The day TEM killed his own joke.
-
I got Man vs. Tank a while back in the greatest way possible: every one of my teammates simultaneously lost connection, and I shot the Tank while using the frozen friends as bait. BRILLIANT.
-
If every other player simultaneously loses their connection...
...you might have lost your connection.
-
I'm sure everyone who cares already knows this, but I'll bring it up for the sake of bringing it up: there's free L4D DLC coming out on PC and 360 this spring.
I currently have no idea whether the playability of the game on here shot up when I put in a better video card like the other Source games, but even if it did, I'll still wait until a price drop or I get real Internet to buy the game.
-
If every other player simultaneously loses their connection...
...you might have lost your connection.
So, he soloed the tank in some alternate universe? If he lost his connection, I'm pretty sure he would've just been kicked.
-
I'm not saying he's wrong (maybe they were all on the same network?), I just wanted to make a Jeff Foxworthy-esque statement.
-
That'd be
If every other player simultaneously loses their connection...
(pregnant pause as the audience laughs, knowing the punchline)
...you might have lost your connection.
After you tell six variations of the same joke. And then sell beef jerkey.
-
And host a game show.
-
To anyone who may be interested but thinks $50 is too much: PC Left 4 Dead is $25 this weekend.

I just had the weirdest VS match with TEM, with multiple attempts to get started before
Attempt 1
We had to ditch, since one guy remembered my name from when I was griefing a while back and got thirsty for blood. Got a weird rush out of that. Also, someone asked TEM about Boba Fett.
Attempt 2
Lobby was full, according to TEM. Wasn't for me. Perhaps TEM lives in an alternate dimension just slightly out of synch with ours. Will investigate later.
Attempt 3
Went mostly according to plan, except our team sucked a little. When all but one of the other team ragequit and the lone guy still won, we ended up getting voted back to the lobby after the lone guy realized our team was actually winning. Then TEM raged.
All in all, probably more fun than a straightforward no-nonsense A-to-B match.
-
Then TEM raged.

Fair enough. I withdraw my post. But you have to hand it to Microsoft, they lurrrrv money.
-
My reaction was essentially the same as LD's but with less FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU amd more jizzing of the pants.
Also,
In fact, I intend to buy a good microphone exactly for this game.
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhahahahahahahahaahahaaahhhaaahhh
I was so naive back then.
-
The description seems to suggest that it is Versus mode only. I thought that was kind of disappointing.
-
While containing both Survival maps and a Co-operative Campaign, the primary goal of "Crash" is to deliver a complete Versus mode experience in just 30 minutes, resulting in a streamlined version of the game's existing Versus campaigns.
-
If it says primary goal in a sentence I immediately start reading there. I can't shake that space marine training.
-
WOOOO! Suck on that, 360 Valve gamers!
-
Wooo. PC elitism continues to rear its ugly head.
-
I'm pretty sure it's Microsoft wanting a cut from DLC this time (it was a big deal that the Survival Pack was free, remember?) instead of PC elitism.
-
Actually I was referring to the previous "Suck on that, 360 valve gamers." comment. I'm well aware of Microsoft being a greedy business corporation. Afterall, there's a reason people replace the S in Microsoft with a $ in a mocking fashion.
Also, a page ago I already stated "Microsoft lurrrvs money." So there. Please read more posts next time before being snarky.
-
bobman has admitted to me in private that he wishes he had gotten L4D on 360. His post was just him trying to make himself feel better about what he has, similar to kids with Genesis in the 16-bit days.
(PC is superior for FPSing though...)
-
True. I have L4D and TF2 on both PC and X360. I just don't have the desire to retrain myself to be comfortable with wasd.
-
No, Meowrik, I read that post. It's just that A. it was yesterday and I've slept since then, and B. at this point I'm so used to people unnecessarily quoting the post before them to respond to it on so many forums that it's almost impossible to tell what someone is talking about when they don't.
Besides, it was either that or talk about how PC is loads better.
-
But PC is loads better. Pretty much the only genres PC-exclusive elitists are missing out on are fighters and first runs of big-big triple-A titles. The only catch is that in this day and age you'd better have a [darn] good computer if you ever want to actually play anything with decent graphics.
-
Actually, my reasons for finally getting a 360 (which my dad will be paying for, mind you) are The Beatles: Rock Band, an assload of insane XBLA-only shmups, and Mega Man 9. None of those are fighting games, and only one of those could be considered a AAA title.
I (or anyone else) can build a computer for under $1000 that can handle a lot of the stuff coming out for a while with no problem. Nowadays, the whole "$2500+ to play games on your computer" thing is a myth perpetuated by a vocal minority who want 16GB of RAM and graphics better than what most games will be putting out at max settings for months.
-
Personally, I enjoy PC gaming for quite a few reasons:
High customizibility with, for the most part, ease of doing such (Xbox owners have to jump through some crazy hoops to get their Alyxs naked)
The loads and loads of indie games that will probably never end up on Xbox Live Arcade (and I'm not talking about the big popular corporate-backed indie games)
Mods (Garry's Mod, Research & Development, Trespasser, Pirates Vikings & Knights, that one that turns Civ IV into an alien-fighting real-time RPG, all that good stuff)
And Warp, the emphasis in my post was on "missing out on". As someone with such a sophisticated taste in games, I don't consider the Beatles, an assload of shmups, and Mega Man 9 to be reason enough to buy an Xbox. I do consider Dead Rising, Halo, and GTA IV to be, though, and along with lots of others.
-
I am no PC elitist. I would much rather sit down on my couch and play a game on my 360 than sit in this uncomfortable chair in the hottest room in the house playing a game until my computer shuts down. That's my main problem with PC gaming-- I don't understand my computer enough to fix the weird problems that arise, like random crashes during L4D and it freezing every 2 minutes like it's doing now.
There are exceptions: RTS (WarCraft) and Valve games (TF2, L4D, Counter-Strike, Half-Life). RTS because it's just so much easier with a mouse. Valve games because:
1. Mouse + keyboard
2. User-created content (maps)
3. Free downloadable content and updates
Other than those few exceptions (among others), if a game is on the PC and 360, I will buy it for the 360.
I did say I wish I had L4D for 360, there's no reason to hide that, because there's nothing wrong with that. What I didn't say was I wish I had it for 360 instead of PC. In fact, TEM would applaud me because I would be 2/3 of a true fan.
Thus, my comment. 360 L4D players should know better than to buy a Valve game on anything other than PC at first.
-
Glorb's outrageous statement that PCs get most of console games is boggling my mind. PCs right now are getting a lot of 360 fare and vice versa, but then I think about Mario Galaxy or something, Final Fantasy XII, the list goes on.
PCs can theoretically get way better graphics and stuff if you build a good one though, this is true.
-
I never said PC gets most of console games. I said the only genres PC gamers are missing out on in a major way are fighting games and first runs of triple-A games (i.e. exclusives). This means that:
a) PC gamers have to settle for MUGEN or whatever, and
2) you probably won't get to play Grand Theft Halo Fantasy until a year or so later, if at all
If you play PC games primarily you will not feel you are missing out on girly RPGs and Mario because you'll have Half-Life and whatnot. Conversely, the opposite is true for console-primary gamers who are perfectly capable of getting by with Mario and girly RPGs.
If I have to explain this again I may freak.
-
Actually I want to play MUGEN.
-
It sure is PCvsConsole in here.
Hopefully we can round up a go at Crash Course. I'm looking at you, bobman37 and Suffix. The 4th person maybe any number of people.
-
When does it come out again?
-
sophisticated taste in games
Halo
Any credibility this argument may have had disappeared here.
RTS because it's just so much easier with a mouse.
Not because RTS on anything except PC is for the most part ass on the same level as E.T.? I'm still trying to repress the memories of Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings.
-
What the heck? Revenant Wings is super fun.

Are we thinking of the same game, timebreaker? I'm thinking of the fun-for-a-bit-but-then-quickly-becomes-ugh-no-more DS RTS sequel to a PS2 JRPG, if that helps.

I'm nearly at the end of the game, sir. And it is still fun. Hard, but fun.
-
Left 4 Dead or Revenant Wings?
-
Revenant Wings.
-
The next question, then, is of whether or not Chupperson has ever played an RTS using a mouse.
-
L4D doesn't really have an end!
-
(By the way, Glorb, I played through about half of Revenant Wings before I came to the conclusion that it had started really sucking several chapters earlier, so it's not as if I played for a few minutes and then quit. I'll mention now that it's the same case with Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days [but with extra sucking], before anyone jumps down my throat when I talk next month about how much it sucks before I even play it.)
-
Crash Course is out. I'll be on at 10 PM Eastern time looking for fellows L4Deaders to play with.
-
oh my god.
brb
-
I downloaded it. We can give it a shot sometime soon.
-
I tried it on coop and died at the very end of the first half and then quit because I had to make dinner.
But it was still mad fun. And Francis says "GOD[darn]" a lot more than he used to.
-
I'm without graphics cards, I should have a new one Friday or Monday. I tried to rally a game before but you guys didn't show.
-
Sorry, I had a crazy scheme to help out with. I'm totally open for Friday, though.

Just played my first campaign of L4D2 with Eclipsed Moon, Captain Jim, and a dude named Travis who managed to kill more zombies than me. The chainsaw is awesome and I love chopping up zombies with the blade melee weapons, the axe and machete in particular. I pooped a little at the finale of the Parrish because we were almost across the bridge and when I looked behind me I saw Jim as a little dot getting ground to dust by a Charger. We left him there. Also EM yelled at me for shooting him when me and Travis were blowing zombies off of him when he was the last guy getting to the chopper.
EDIT: Also I pooped when I was rallying everyone to prepare to take out a wandering Witch when Jim shot her directly with a grenade launcher with no warning.

I just played the sickest match of Scavenge ever. We were playing 5 rounds in the Mall Atrium. Each team was pretty good, and the first 4 rounds were won alternating back and forth. SO the 5th round was going to decide it. My team played infected first and stopped the Survivors at 3 cans. We rejoiced because this was almost a guaranteed won round, winning the entire game in the process. However, the enemy team came at us full force. We got 3 cans in, 2 guys on the ground, 2 on the stairs near the car. I got pulled off the ledge at the top of the staircase by a Jockey, then when my partner (who was lagging a bit) got up to help me up, the same Jockey got HIM off the same ledge so we overlapped hanging there. On the ground one of our teammates was down by unknown means, and the same Jockey got the guy trying to help him up, ending the match.
I was pooping in amazement at this Jockey, and thinking that we lost the match when we stopped the other team at 3 cans. But then the tie-breaker started and I realized we got as many cans as them at the end, and we did it in 30 seconds to their 2 minutes, winning us the round and the match. It was a freak fest.
-
I'm really bad at Scavenge so I don't play it.
-
Both of the Midnight Riders songs played during the Dark Carnival finale hit the Rock Band Network today. So awesome.
-
I am cry. (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99316-One-Left-4-Dead-Survivor-Wont-Survive-The-Passing)
-
Oh man, that is sad. The only cast member of L4D1 I didn't always like was Francis, but even he has his amusements. "Keep your beard on, Bill!"
I happen to have a question: are there any people who would be interested in mapping for L4D1? I'm not going to make any more progress after the two maps I made for a campaign doomed to see the release of L4D2. This doesn't mean it couldn't be somehow adapted with a lot of hard work, but it's sad. Anyway, two vmfs useful for finishing campaigns, making survival maps, or learning how to map if anyone wants them.
-
I love how Valve feels they have to spoil every [darn] thing about any new L4D game or DLC before it comes out. I realize that it doesn't ruin the game one bit, but I'd love to be playing and suddenly - ooh, it's raining! Wow! Or, ooh, there's a new zombie I've never seen before! Y'know?
Anyway, I already like to tell my teammates I've been bitten and bravely sacrifice myself by jumping off the roof at the beginning of No Mercy, so this is old territory to me.
-
So I played The Passing. The L4D1 tie-in stuff is pretty cool, but my favorite part is the achievements, which are easily the most creative in L4D so far. Another highlight is that the graffiti in The Passing is probably the funniest stuff Valve's put out since Portal (and the most reference-laden; I counted riffs on Dead Rising, the 2004 Dawn of the Dead, and Shaun of the Dead, for starters). Also, (SERIOUS ACTUAL SPOILER), I'm not telling you which of the L4D1 survivors dies, just play the [darn] thing. Packs much more content into three sections than Crash Course did. Also, the whole thing with the Mutations looks sort of cool, if hilariously unbalanced.
-
Just ran through it on Normal with bobman. That was the most anti-climactic "someone dies" I've ever seen. The way they did it, I am also suspicious that it could change each time? (haven't checked if I'm right) Will there be more details in the upcoming L4D content?
Mutations and more Scavenging are the best parts.
P.S. I saw a Plants vs. Zombies reference too.
-
LD, apparently the death happened before The Passing, and will be explored in the L4D content that takes place leading up to it. It's also been the same survivor each time I've played.
Also I spied an American Dad reference. My favorite is still the Dead Rising one.
-
I noticed it's impossible for anyone to play The Passing without theorizing wildly how ??? died. My favorites:
Kidney failure
Suicide
Finally succumbed to infection or wounds (or both)
Killed by the other three
Zombies (I suspect this is the most likely to be canon)
-
These people playing Realism Versus without mics are the very definition of n00bs who don't care about winning.
-
Anyone playing Realism Versus on the survivor team probably doesn't care about winning anyway.
-
Uh, you alternate sides. That's how the game works.
-
I noticed it's impossible for anyone to play The Passing without theorizing wildly how ??? died. My favorites:
The sound files of one of the other survivors hint that ??? was killed by a Tank.
-
Uh, you alternate sides. That's how the game works.
What I was saying is that RV's design is clearly and purposly biased against the survivors for that true zombie movie feeling. When you play as the survivor team, don't seriously expect to get to the saferoom at all, teamwork or no teamwork (unless the other team has like one guy on it and/or all four of you rock on realism mode anyway). Mics don't really change anything since no one playing in a public game should be concerned with hardcore teamwork battle tactics.
-
I didn't say "getting to the saferoom", I said winning. Obviously you can't get to the saferoom.
-
Well, look at it this way: I play without a mic and I have played Realism Versus and didn't really care either way about who won, so I suppose you're right.
I hope one of the modes is a continuous survivors vs. Infected mode where you stay with the team you're on until the end. I don't know why, I just think that'd be cool. Also, a mode where the humans have Infected powers and the Infected have guns.
-
Hey, yesterday I got to play with Eclipsed Moon, Captain Jim (briefly), TEM (very briefly), and my old old buddies Rynoh and Tackle Dem Gritz! Good times!
Also I got to go to this party where I spent the majority of it playing Call of Duty with this super-hot girl who was better than me. Aren't you guys just jealous?
-
Note: Neither Rynoh nor Tackle Dem Gritz are actually buddies with Glorb. Nor do they know him.
-
Also I got to go to this party where I spent the majority of it playing Call of Duty with this super-hot girl who was better than me. Aren't you guys just jealous?
No 'cause anyone can fantasize.
-
On Tuesday new DLC for L4D and L4D2 come out. Me and EM plan on playing The Sacrifice on L4D2 at 10 PM Eastern. We need two more for the run, who's going to be there?
-
I'm in. Can I be Bill?
-
By all means.
-
I call Zoey.
-
Awesome. I will bravely die for you.
-
Oh wait, 10 eastern? I have rehearsal until 11 eastern, if you guys would be willing to wait until like 11:15 then I'm still good, otherwise I guess I can't play. I really want to though. Or I can do 7 eastern. :(
-
I ragequit so hard I completely shut my computer down and did laundry.
-
Yeah, TEM pussed out and we beat it without him. It was badass.
-
Why did TEM ragequit?
-
Because he couldn't fight through the pain.
-
Finally got around to playing "The Sacrifice". Played with two other dudes and a chick, the way L4D is meant to be played. We beat it on Normal and did 'Chaos Generator'. I found it odd that the achievement names aren't CAPITALIZED this time. Then we partied like it was 2008 with "No Mercy". That finale is a lot more interesting when everyone can't hide in a tiny room using their infinite melees on the doorway. ;)
At first I kept accidentally shooting teammates because my brain was only lookiing out for L4D2 friendlies. Francis is kinda scary-looking, ya know?
-
I miss playing L4D2 with LD. I realized it when I got to a jukebox and played the Jonathan Coulton song. And scavenge.
-
Scavenge 4 life, yo.
I forgot to mention the Mutation this week is hilarious insanity: "Taaannnkk!", where all 4 Infected players are Tanks and the Survivors get a 15 sec. headstart. All medkits are instead pills.
-
Gotta say, it's refreshing seeing the old survivors again. Francis went up a bit in the jack*** stakes for the newest campaign, but hey, it's fun.
-
this week is "hunting trip?" I don't remember what it's called but it's all 4 hunters. :D
