Title: Sonic Adventure
Post by: BriGuy92 on June 25, 2011, 11:14:36 PM
So as part of some kind of marketing thing involving Sonic Generations and Sonic the Hedgehog's 20th anniversary, Sonic Adventure is on sale on Xbox Live Arcade for $5. I've never played this game before, but I've heard a lot of people say a lot of very nice things about it. I'm kinda considering buying it, but I'm not sure if I should. Like I said, I've never played it, but I have played a bit of Sonic Adventure 2, which I found to be kind of... eh. The Sonic/Shadow stages were fun, the Knuckles/Rouge stages were boring, and the Tails/Eggman levels were more boring. Are the two games similar at all?

I've never played the second installment, but I found the first to be rather underwhelming.  It just felt rather sloppy all around.

Mind you, I played the GameCube version.  Don't know if that makes a difference.

For reasons that only a combination of preadolescence and considerable disposable income can explain, I procured a copy of both the pretentiously-titled Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut and the vaguely-titled Sonic Adventure 2: Battle for the GameCube in my youth. At the time, I'm not even sure if I knew they were remakes, and I'm still not sure how much was changed besides minor uprezzing and the titular cuts/battles. I got minor enjoyment out of each, but at least at the time, I got stuck on both and lost interest. Still, I can't help but feel ripped-off now that they're selling it for chump change--but if memory serve me right, that's what it's worth. In retrospect, yeah, they did feel pretty rough around the edges, but as the first in a long line of regrettable (2D/)3D Sonic games, what else could you retroactively expect?

Sonic Adventure was Sonic's first 3D game, and like Mario 64, it amounted to a whole bunch of various crap they threw against a wall to see what stuck. Unlike Mario 64, though, most of it kinda sucked.

Adventure 2 is a streamlined version of Adventure 1 gameplay-wise. It took the multiple levels and whittled it down to the fun ones. So imagine the decent to mediocre Running, Shooting, and Looking For [dukar] levels from Adventure 2, and add in Running After Someone levels, Running Away From Something With A Hammer levels, and Fishing levels. Think of all the most annoying, boring, stupid-ass [dukar] in Adventure 2, and think to yourself "After two years of revision, this is the stuff they kept."

Still, there's some fun stuff in there, and if you don't care about the Super Sonic level (which is cool-looking but kinda boring and/or annoying to play), I'm pretty sure you can just play the pretty fun Sonic and Tails levels and ignore the boring Knuckles levels, annoying Gamma levels, stupid Amy levels, and stupid-ass Big levels.

If you hated Adventure 2 overall as a game, you'll really hate Adventure 1 overall. However, if you loved the Sonic/Shadow levels, and think it'd be worth five bucks to just play some more of those and ignore the rest of the game (or "game", as the case may be), go for it.

But on the other other hand, the good levels will probably be in Generations anyway.

First time I played SA was on a rented imported Dreamcast from a local rental store. This was before the Dreamcast had even hit America, and the graphics and music blew my mind. It was awesome but I got stuck after a few levels because I didn't know what to do in the overworld because I couldn't read Japanese. So I spent the rest of my rental period playing Pen Pen Triathalon and Marvel vs. Capcom in Japanese.

A long time later I got SADXDC on Cube and got the true ending, beating it fully with every character. The graphics weren't impressive anymore but the music was still awesome. I'd say it's still the best 3D Sonic. For $5 do it.

And I loved fishing. Haters gonna hate.

Hey there big guy
Hey little guy

Sonic Adventure DX and its sequel used to be one of my brother's favorite games on the gamecube, and every time I watched him play it, he looked like he was having so much fun. So, naturally, I tried it out also. But what I found was honestly the exact opposite of fun. The mediocre graphics (good for the time, even better than SM64), just didn't age well, the crappy voice acting, (what else did I expect from a Sonic game), the annoying platforming, a mixed with meh level design, and sloppy controls made the game a chore to play, and I didn't even beat the second 'level'. The sequel's opening level was much more exciting than anything I'd seen in the original game, but the rest of the game (at least what I played before I quit) was quickly plagued with more of the same problems from the first game. I'll admit the music was catchy,  but i wasn't about to play through a game like these just to hear music that I could listen to hassle free online.
But if you're a big enough Sonic fan, I do think you could get some enjoyment out of it, especially for five bucks, but since you said you didn't really like the sequel, i would advise you not to get it, because the sequel basically improved on just about everything from the firsy, and still didn't get it right. So no, don't buy it.

It hasn't aged well at all. Namely the graphics, physics engine and voice-acting. But it is the closest Sonic's ever come to having a 3D world that actually felt like a world and not a bunch of one-way obstacle courses. It's also the only time Tails has ever been playable in 3D and not forced to use a mech suit or exploding ring boxes.

I wouldn't say they're too similar, but Sonic Adventure 2 is one of my all-time favorite Sonic games. I'd say the first one is definitely worth the $5.

Yeah, for me, it's almost worth it just for being the only 3D Sonic game ever to have decent Tails levels. But I'd rather have Sonic Colors Wii, where even though Tails isn't playable, he has the first good voice actor he's had since... ever, maybe?

But, hey, for five dollars, why not.
