« on: June 30, 2007, 03:01:20 PM »
Starting today, the 30th day in June, 2007, I shall start the journey of a lifetime.  I shall go through each and everyone of the video games that I own, and beat it.  By September 6th, I will have either completed over 20 years of games, or failed miserably.

Basically, I want to beat, in some form, every game that I own.  The reason for posting here is that I need your help.  Since for some of these games, it’s been years since the last time I played, I’m going to need some help.  And also, I need other people to know about it if I am to motivate myself to go through all of them.  Otherwise, I might get lazy and not complete the task.  I’m going to list the games that I need to beat, and I will use the site as a sort of continuous checklist, which I will update when I beat a game.  Okay, here’s the list, starting with Nintendo, going to Sega, then Sony. (Note-to make some games more difficult, such as ones I’ve beaten many times before, or to specify what it means to “beat” the game, there will be an added note after the game’s title?

And there you have it, every game that I must beat.  The games with “?” are ones that I don’t know how to consider it beaten, or I don’t know how to make it harder for myself.  Mainly, puzzle games that have no ending I need some suggestions on.  I didn’t include games that I am borrowing from friends, since those aren’t part of MY collection.  I also did not include my DS games, since right now I am without a DS, making that goal impossible to complete.  I will allow any game I get in the next week to be a part of the challenge, so if I find the DS in that time, I will add it, otherwise, no.  As games are beat, I will take a photo proving that I have beaten it, and edit the list with the completed games crossed out.

My basic plan of action is to go through the NES, Genesis, and Gameboy games, as those are generally shorter, while worry about the RPGs until the end, as those take the most time.  All games will be played from the beginning, so no old, partial completions to work off of.  I might have at least one LoZ game going at all times, since those can also be quite time consuming.  Any suggestions or comments are welcome.  I might be forgetting something I wanted to say, but for now, I think this looks good.  Oh, and the spacing is a little off because I originally wrote this in another program, then just copied it over.

September 6th? There's no way dude. You're going to have to play like 25 hours a day every day and be really good to be able to beat all those hardcore old NES games.

« Reply #3 on: June 30, 2007, 04:11:06 PM »
Yeah. Two months isn't long enough for that massive list of games. I think you'll find yourself getting frustrated/running out of time. Good luck though.

No way. Just, no way. Hey, don't give up, though... prove me wrong! I'll offer all the help I can give, though... jump, jump, don't die. You can do the Mew glitch in Yellow as soon as you get an Abra south of Cerulean, and it turns lethal really quickly. PUNCH THE MIIS FOR GOD'S SAKE! You can use Epona to jump over Gerudo Valley and finish the Biggoron's Sword quest anytime after Link gets old instead of waiting until after you get the Longshot.

So, you're going waste 2 glorious months free from school playing your entire game collection?

Why not get some air? I mean, do you really want to be couped up in your house all summer long? If you fail, that would have been 2 months of no-school gone to waste.

I'd be doing pretty much the same thing then, just not having a real goal to it.  At least this way I'm trying to accomplish something.  I just have to beat an average of about 3 games a day, for the next 66 days.  It's going to be tough, and that's the idea.  Most of these games have been replayed so many times that they've lost that sense of achievement.  I'm just trying to get that back.

Pessimist me: My God, man, you're insane! No one could do that! No one!

My stomach: Chips...

Real me: Okay, don't listen to the pessimist and the stomach. They'll just get you into trouble. I have faith in you, really, but that is a big list... Just try your best and remember to get some fresh air every once in a while, okay? ;)

WOW.

This is an impossible list and if you do prove me wrong, dude...you must have had a LOT of time on your hands.

I think that you might/ARE going to lose your sanity trying to do this.

By the way, nice collection of games you have there ^_^.

Cheese.. I wish you luck on trying to tackle that monster of a list in 2 months.

I do have a question though: wouldn't it be a bit redundant to beat the Mario All*stars versions of the first three games, since you would have done it already (assuming you are playing in order)?

I think you should exclude games that are remakes (unless they are home versions of arcade games, or have completely new areas), and endless puzzle games (Wario Woods, Mario Bros).

Just my thoughts. Good luck.

A lot of puzzle games aren't endless; you just haven't played them enough :-p
For instance,

Yoshi's Cookie (NES/GB) has two endings, one after level 10-10 and one after level 99-10.
Wario's Woods (NES) has 99 rounds in each of game A and B as well as time trial.

The SNES versions are somewhat different.

Wow. That's a mighty list there. I'm sorry if I seem pessimistic, but I'm not seeing all of those games just based on size alone beaten in two months. And with games like Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, and Super Smash Bros. Melee that take such a long time to meet their goals (Melee doesn't really have an end, but your goal is huge.), I just can't see them individually beaten in like 2-4 weeks.
Might I suggest instead focusing more on games you haven't beaten? Or, maybe you should try listening to all of Britney Spears' albums (that might actually be a lot harder.) I just see no way of you meeting this goal in two months. Maybe 4-6 months, but not two. Yes, not even you, Lizard Dude, could do this.

Game and Watch Gallery, get enough stars to view the credits can be your goal for that game. For Yoshi's Story you can either get all the levels, or beat the game to view all the credits (your choice). For Animal Crossing, pay off your house. Super Mario 64, do the staircase glitch to beat the game first then get all the stars. Super Mario Sunshine will take you a while because of all the blue coins, and Sonic 3 and Knuckles doesn't take more than 2-4 days for me to get all the Super Emeralds. You can beat Ocarina of Time in less than a day and Super Mario Bros. 3 in a few hours. For Link to the Past, there's this glitch to beat it in 3 minutes. I think it will help. Start a new game and go to where Zelda is in the prison. After going up the stairs from the cell, go down to go up another flight of stairs on the same screen. Jump down from the little ledge on the right and push Select to open up the save menu after you're about halfway to the ground after jumping off. Select Save and Quit and continue your file again. Get hit and you will be invisible. Go to the staircase as you normally would, but wait, you go through it into an empty room! Go up once into another empty room and go right once after that. After going right, keep going up and you will eventually get to Ganon and go to the credits! I tried it myself, it works!!

You can do it! Just put your mind to it!

Did you actually play through Yoshi's Cookie to level 99-10, or do you just know?  I don't think I could bring myself to play Yoshi's Cookie that much...

But there's no way he can do it.  No way.  Nooooooo way.  You could spend a few weeks on the NES section alone.  When are you going to sleep?

Oh, almighty Vid, it must be so nice, up on that pedestal.  What's it like, being greater than all of mankind?  What can I do to please you, because that "I rock and you all suck" attitude makes me oh-so happy!  When I grow up, I want to be just like Vid, better than everyone.

Concerning my attempt to play all my games, yes I did fail, but it's not like I just stopped trying, I got a good chunk through it.  I've got a list somewhere around here that has all the games I did get through, which I will update the list in a little bit.  I think everyone should try this, because it was a lot of fun going back to play games I haven't looked at in so long.

Now where-oh-where in my post did I have an "I rock and you all suck" attitude? I'm sorry, I don't see what you see, and I'm not very tolerant of sarcasm of this brand, sir.

What I DO see in my post was pointing out the fact that I was glad that real life somehow might have intervened in your game-a-thon. If you were to have this event back in, I dunno, 1996, I probably would've had a more supportive attitude, since I was mainly glued to my SNES back then myself.

Now though, at your age, you have a ton of fun things in this world besides sitting on your couch playing video games all day. I know I haven't spent many summers playing video games, and I mostly spent this summer doing stuff outside my house, like riding my bike, or going to the library or pool. You might actually do these things yourself, and I have no doubts that you did do stuff like this at one point over the summer, but planning something like this...eh. Kinda seems sad to me. Video games are fun. Doing other stuff can be just as fun, though.

He means that lately you've been imposing your "South Park Goth Kids Pshaw" attitude at people for a while now. You always point out to people what "stupid crap" they're doing and try putting yourself at the center of attention saying "I don't really give a care of what's going on, but I'm going to try ruining it for everyone else," like "Ooh, I hope this doesn't become another stupid patriotic topic" or "Hey, you forgot the option 'I really don't care'." From the tone with which you revived this topic you were saying "yay, CoconutMikeNike got a life" and that's just rude. Let CoconutMikeNike have his game-a-thon. Again, I don't see this attitude people are claiming that I have. I might be blunt in a few of my posts, yes, but I am quite a literal person on the internet. I mean what I say and try not to make it seem like something negative, but for some reason, many people take it that way. A curse, maybe.

I might have somewhat of a superiority complex when it comes to age, though. I try not to let that get in the way. Being given commands or orders I do not like by someone considerably younger than me urks me a bit.

But, to defend myself from your examples:
•When I said I don't care, I meant I didn't care who won in the battle, not that I didn't care entirely. Melee clarified that in one of his posts.
•A couple of users once upon a time made it clear to Jman that 9/11-related stuff was frowned upon when it apparently came the time to "feel sad" for it again. Being one of the users closest to Ground Zero, it seemed that I had the most to feel sad for, as the day DID have an effect on my family. If I don't feel sad about it today, why should you be?
•This wasn't a huge bump. This thread was posted in less than two months ago, and it was still on the first page. I wondered how MikeNIke was doing on the thing after awhile, saw his list and lack of strikethroughs on titles, and was glad that he didn't spend his whole summer doing just one thing. It's not like I posted "I LIKE CHEESE".
•The couple was wrong to do that to Glorb. I like video games, it's definitely a fun activity and hobby. But, all day, every single day, just staying at home, on your couch, probably in your underwear, playing video games? I'd imagine most people getting bored after 2-4 hours straight of video games. That's when I turn off my system and go do something else. I'm not saying he needs to socialize, but to put a little more variety in his day instead of just controlling things on his television set or computer all day. As Robert said earlier in this thread, why waste 2 months just doing that?

More like, "I'm a brilliant child psychologist and CoconutMikeNIke's a doofus." Vid, you've hardly any need to educate us.
I'm a little tired of your cabooses to statements like these, in here and in IRC. They just add salt to any wounds made by the statements that seem invisible to you or the person inflicting them.

I didn't mean to offend anyone with my words. I never do mean to offend anyone with my words. I make it very clear if I do. Trust me, you'll know it.
