A new Mario game has quietly appeared on Nintendo's Japanese Wii release list: Super Mario Collection Special Pack, dated for October 21. Early reports indicate that Super Mario Collection Special Pack is a port of Super Mario All-Stars (http://themushroomkingdom.net/games/smas) (known as "Super Mario Collection" in Japan) and will include a Mario history book and CD soundtrack, all for the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. (http://themushroomkingdom.net/games/smb), which launched in Japan on September 13, 1985.
Will they release the game and goodies in North America? Will they fix the reversed brick physics (http://themushroomkingdom.net/smb_nes2smas.shtml#brickphysics) that plagued Super Mario All-Stars? We'll post more info as it develops.

I bet part of this becomes NoA's "Club Nintendo" prizes if it does come to America
-
Er, what system is it for?
-
Japanese Wii
-
D'oh.
-
This is awesome, so it's obviously not going to come out in the US.
-
I wondered if anything was in store for SMB's 25th, but I wrote that off after NSMBWii came out. At any rate, now that it's announced, it had better dang come out in America. It's probably the number-one game I've wanted to see since about 2006. That or a new SMBDX.
-
I wonder whether the game will be a straight port of SMAS, or if it'll be an updated version.
-
I was wondering that as well. Seems like it'd be a bit of a waste as a Wii game if it weren't. Unless Toad's right, that is... Either way, it's pretty sweet.
-
If I had to guess, I'd say it'll be the same game (collection), but the menu screens will navigate slightly differently (with Wii friendly controls).
I was sorta also thinking they might do something like in the Mario Party games: highlight the game you want to play and a little movie of the game starts playing (I think that little feature started in MP5..). I was thinking it'd be neat if they had little fun facts and tidbits about the game too, but that's probably just wishful thinking on my part (what don't we know already about these classic games anyway? XD )
Oooh! Interesting thought: is this going to be SMAS or SMAS + SMW??
-
I think they'll keep the graphics basically the same, fix minor glitches, and make it easier.
-
Why don't they man up and put a graphically updated SM64 on it?
-
Sounds good to me. SML ports, while they're at it?

IMO, because they can still milk money out of SM64. Nintendo is all about profit maximization. Note that they made SM64x4 for the DS and I predict will have a port of it for the Wii2 or whatever.
-
Sadly, that's probably indeed the case. I miss the Super Mario Deluxe/Advance-style remakes badly.
-
Port confirmed. (http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/09/07/mario_collection_port/)
-
They weren't kidding about Nintendo being quick to pull it from pre-order sources, though: It's nowhere to be found on Amazon.
-
Soundtrack sounds neat, but there's no other legitimate reason to buy this.
-
That and if you don't already own a SNES, I suppose. But yeah, were it to come out here, I'd probably buy it anyways.
-
I'd definitely buy it even if I do own a SNES.

Yay Mario! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Va95ewZEnYU)
But it bothers me how they always leave out the Yoshi's Island games and the Mario RPGs.

But it bothers me how they always leave out the Yoshi's Island games and the Mario RPGs.
The RPGs and the YI games aren't part of the core series, so wanting them to be included would be no different than demanding the Party or Kart games to be added in.
Interesting how the video contains no SMAS footage...
-
But the Yoshi's Island games and the Mario RPGs are still full-fledged Mario adventures with stories, characters, level progression, and final bosses. It doesn't make sense to me to just cluster them with spin-offs like Mario Kart and Mario Party.
-
From a business perspective, they're unique and elaborate enough to justify a separate, wallet-milking release... hypothetically.
-
Yoshi's Island is definitely a main-series game. Yoshi's Story isn't as much. The RPGs are really too big games of their own to be included in collections.
At any rate, all they're doing here is porting SMAS to the Wii to get some money.

Yes, and they included SMW. I wonder if that means this'll be SMAS+SMW..?
-
That was my first assumption, seeing as that was in that special Japanese version that came out later.

The official site says no: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/svmj/index.html

SMAS+SMW only came out in the US and Europe.
-
That's... news to me. Ironic!

Well that's a pity.
-
Hopefully, not a full-priced pity.
-
I seem to recall reading it was about (the Japanese equivalent to) $30 dollars. Was that on here somewhere..?

Yah, TMK news :P http://themushroomkingdom.net/board/index.php?topic=13310.0
