Super Paper Mario (http://themushroomkingdom.net/games/spm) slips onto store shelves across the US today. The dimension-shifting adventure is Mario's first for the Wii and third in the Paper Mario series.
-
Man, I wish I had the money for it. Maybe I'll be able to get it anyway.
-
Phht... I can afford it, but I doubt anyone'll really have it at launch. I always get some junnk about the "shipments" being in, but I have to wait to actually buy it, or it somehow miraculously sold out.
-
Well, we bought WarioWare:Smooth moves a two days ago, so I doubt we're going to get another game so soon :(.
... not to say that WarioWare isn't fun :D *hugs WarioWare game box*.
-
Awww, this freakin sucks. I want it but I don't even have the Wii yet. Almost 6 months after launch. No worries. I shall get it soon...hopefully.
-
This is great, I can actually buy it right now if I want to. But then again my parents wouldn't approve. Maybe I'll wait a while.
-
You people... I save my money for important junk, like this. Except no store is going to have a copy today. So I'll have it tomorrow...
Tomorrow school starts again. Rrrrrrghhhh!
-
Hahaha
I have to help clean out the shed today (maybe tomorrow), which will be a tedious task, especially with my grandfather. He can't walk too well, and he's apt to get in the way. Fortunately, I'll get a boatload of money for it. It won't be enough for SPM, but hopefully my grandmother will be nice and make up t he difference until it gets warm enough for me to cut the grass. It was, there for a while, but the temperatures dipped to the forties again.
-
I just wonder if Peach and Bowser will play as important parts in the game as Mario. From what I've seen of it, they don't seem to be there for much...
...but I'm sure the game will explain. Hopefully I'll get a copy of it this weekend.

Heheh.
Well, MaxVance, I know for a fact that they play important parts, but Mario is the most important, of course.
-
I looked at a Best Buy thing the other day, but it said they wouldn't put the game on the shelves till 2 pm tomorrow. I have school that day! >:(
-
Getting it tomorrow. Was planning to do it today but given how it's only shipped out and probably isn't on shelves yet, I'll wait a bit. I was going to get it at Kmart but Circuit City has some GBA games on discount and there's two titles I have my eyes on.
-
This just in:
If Circuit City doesn't have it in stock after 2PM, or it is sold out after 2PM, you score a $20 gift card.
-
I have it!
.. but I won't be able to play it until later, and won't be able to post here again until tomorrow (if you're wanting reviews and such of the game).

Too bad it's at Circuit City. My parents decided to stop shopping there after they fired many of their employees since they were getting paid more than the employees of competitors.

As they say in Iceland, "halló!"
This is my first post– and, I am glad to add, a post made in good humor!
This afternoon, I bought a copy of the game (with more than one days' salary,) and I must say, I like it quite a bit. I've not progressed far, but already, "Super Paper Mario" seems (even despite its quirks and new mechanics) to be much more faithful to the feel of "Paper Mario" for the Nintendo 64 than was "The Thousand-Year Door" on the GameCube.
The game is jaunty, charming, and quite pleasantly nostalgic, calling into play a whole slew of enemies, tunes, and terrain from Mario games passed, even as new and equally interesting characters and places are introduced. The 'flipping' mechanic truly does add a unique feel and exploratory quality to the gameplay, and the pacing "issues" alluded to in many of the popular gaming website reviews are not a significant enough problem to even warrant much commentary. If you found the story sequences to be of tolerable length in the series' previous installments, you shall likely find no flaw in the pacing of Paper Mario's latest adventure.
I hope my little spiel was of any help to those interested.
Au revoir,
Cole
-
Lucky Cole! I have hope for this new game yet! :D It seems fascinating. I've been reading spoilers. I'm going to watch spoilers. For some reason, they really don't "spoil" for me.
-
Got it.
I've gotten far enough to tell it's not as awesome as TTYD. It's awesome though.
-
It seems a bit hard to compare TTYD and SPM, considering that the games are largely different in gameplay. (Though you could wear a Bump Attack badge and almost play TTYD like a platformer.)
-
Man, I got it today. Such a great game, but so far it seems to be a little lacking in the humor department; a major reason I liked TTYD.
-
I also got it. I'm really enjoying it; I'm up to Chapter 1-4 already.
-
Ah, that's where I'm at, and I must say, I was wrong. SPM still has the humor that TTYD had.
-
Cole90 seems................happy.
-
I'm kind of disappointed at how short it looks like it'll be though. I'm on 5-3... Maybe several plot twists will occur and I'll have to play 22 more or so...
-
I like this a lot more than the RPGs because it's like the RPGs pretty much except when you hit an enemy, instead of going into a boring battle, it's instantly resolved. Jumping on a Goomba and instantly killing it (like Goombas are, ya know, supposed to be) instead of jumping on a Goomba, going into a pointless battle where you know it will do no harm to you and you have to select jump a couple times from a menu, then winning and seeing your star points and then exiting the battle right to where you jumped on the Goomba is definitely something I allow.
See, Bird's complaining that it looks too short, but I think it's just that the battle time is cut out, and you get pure Paper Mario goodness with no pointless battles. Yes!
Also read this ONLY if you've passed 2-3: Earning the 10,000 Rubees on the wheel was so hilariously boring and long I simply have to allow it. Best "joke" of the game so far.
-
What? You actually MADE ALL 1,000,000 running? You didn't just get them out of the safe on the upper floor??
-
I was able to get it yesterday (doing great on my report card helped). It's fun and all, but the chapters I did were a bit too easy.
-
Yeah, I'm on that, er, sweatshop level as well. Game's as fun as heck (and I agree with LD on why it's "shorter"), but sho' 'nuff, no one had it on the first day. But no matter! It's here, it's somethin' to do, and Chapter 2 is pretty short.
-
I said 10,000 not 1,000,000 dude. Ya know, to get the password to the safe.
-
Beat the game. I will not disclose any spoilers. Awesome ending. Though the biggest plot twist was progressively given pretty heavily that you knew it quite early (probably not before the end of world 5? That's when you learn the big plot twist of The Thousand-Year Door...), wow. More plot twists. Excellent game overall, but I stand by my statement, that TTYD was the better game... though SPM's ending was the better one. Buy Super Paper Mario, you won't be sorry.
See, why are the "main" Mario platformers not as excellent as the RPGs, huh? The Paper Mario series puts Super Mario Sunshine to SHAME, man! Perfect level of humor: enough jokes anyone can understand and enough you'll laugh at after some time in school (and playing Mario's classics). The best storylines: do I really need to go over the monstrosity of a plot SMSu had yet again? Best depictions of characters: I'll take go-getter, helpful Peach over "Mama Peach? I'm your mama?" Peach any day. What else do I need to say... no, I think I have it all covered at this point.
-
Well, it's possible that that all could be disproved when SMG is released.
-
Man, do I hope so. Of course, platformers should have simpler plots than RPGs (or SHOULD they), but that doesn't mean it can't still be good.
Maybe I care too much. SMSu was still fun...
-
BP, you beat this game, in four days, the most if you got it at launch, but you gobbled this game up, man, I'd take my time, and explore all areas completely, bet you rushed on it, didn't you?
-
Are you using comma splices on purpose?
-
Wow, four days. I myself, I've never played a Mario platformer all the way through. Sad, I know. But I liked the RPG's! I wonder if SPM is as funny as TTYD because TTYD was hilarious!
-
I can't stop it. When I'm playing I'm like... One more level. Oh what happens next, I must know. WOW that's so awesome I've... another level...!
I'm ALWAYS this way when it's a very very good game--I won't stop playing until I'm exhausted or until I have to eat, and I won't give up. I've pretty much given up on Wario: Master of Disguise just because it's boring and the controls are so picky. Mmmm... I don't regret playing it so quickly, really. It's like reading a good book... in fact, I'm exactly the same with good books as I am with good games.
And about thoroughly exploring the levels... yeah, I don't catch many sidequests until post-final boss. Same with Zelda games. I get too caught up in the main quest to go astray and don't get a quiver any bigger than the first one until after beating it.
Peach: It is. World 7 is the funniest, I think.
-
Are you using comma splices on purpose?
Are you working for Warp Rattler? If not, who are you and what have you done with PL?!
-
Defending your excessive use of comma splices is useless, as it's something that has no right to be defended.
-
I wasn't defending anything, just that PL is getting addicted to correcting people, it's starting to get on my nerves.
-
Yeah, I hired PaperLuigi to correct you for me while I was busy having a life.
-
And I want my 500 dollars.
-
Guys, come on, there, seriously, really isn't any need, for pointless, arguing, such as this, since, we're all good, supportive friends, aren't we, guys?
-
I have a chip in my head that burns whenever someone uses comma splices. And right now, I'm in a huge amount of pain.
-
I beat the game last night. It was awesome. However, my least favorite part was when you had to say key in "please" over and over.
-
I'm at World 7-4, and how the h311 am I supposed to know how to get Piccolo and treasure maps without reading GameFaqs, or something?
-
I can't tell if that was a serious question... Well, simply talk to Merlee in her place at Flopside, but directly (not from across the table). The rest picks up from there. Dunno about the maps... didn't know there were maps ;-_-
-
What's wrong with GameFAQS?
-
Nothing's wrong with GameFAQS...
It's just that there's a lot of things you can do in the game but you are never given the slightest indictation where there are, how to do them, or if it's even possible (Tiptron, the Whacka and Treasure Maps come to mind). Now, I know HOW to find Piccolo and did, and I think that MAYBE I would have accidentally tried that out (talking to the fortune-teller) at some point, but I just beat the game, and I have yet to recieve any info that would lead me towards the conclusion that you have to give Francis in Chapter 3-4 999 coins for Tiptron (I only figured that out by going online... I'll try it later).
-
I guess you're supposed to figure that out by exploring areas of the game that you haven't checked or want to see again to see what's changed after beating it. Also, I beat SPM a few days ago, and I can say that I didn't use any walkthroughs for it.
-
http://wii.nintendo.com/site/spm/ This is exactly the sort of thing I hate about SPM. Twenty seconds to "draw" a screen. I'm bored. The platforming is really cool, but I feel like a cheat going to 3D to pass something. It's still a really good game, just not a triple-A title in my opinion.
-
I see your reasoning that the "drawing" scenes may take a while, but then again they're not that frequent to make me hate them. Besides, if you thought that those small parts were boring, then it's a miracle how you got past all the dialogue without rapidly tapping through it.
-
Maybe hate was too strong a word, but you're right. I tap the button to speed the text up. I want it all on the screen so I can read it then click to get the next screen, not have to wait (will the text types) to finish reading dialog. I haven't finished the game (been enamored with Excite Truck), but so far it's not as funny as Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Maybe I wouldn't feel as rushed in SPM if it weren't for the platforming (I play 2D platformers while holding "b" to run) or the fact that I've been playing Excite Truck and drinking Monster Khaos so much.
-
There are clues within the game for all three of those things.
For Piccolo, you can get a tip from the bartender in Flopside that starts the sequence of events.
For the treasure maps, it's really just a matter of realizing the connection between the two cities, and flipping appropriately.
And for Tiptron, there actually IS a guy in Flopside (just walking around on the street) who will tell you that Francis has something.
The game is quite fun, retains the Paper Mario Humor, and pulls off some great twists.
It's just so easy. None of the bosses could stand up to what my friend dubbed "The Dream Team" Which was Bowser on Carrie, a dangerously effective combination.
And there is a ridiculous amount of periphial stuff.
-
I wish I had noticed that tip guy in Flopside before. I noticed to one in Flipside who always prepares you for the biggest shocker ever but turns out to be Captain Obvious... I only talked to the alternate guy who tells you he doesn;t really know anything useful but tells you something huge AFTER I beat the game and bought Tiptron.
-
Where is that guy at?
Also I didn't know about the maps. This is actually the first I've heard.. Where can you get maps??
-
Thanks for the tips, Fifth, although it's embarrasing to say that I found those three guys after grousing about it the other day.
And as for the maps, all who are wondering, go to B1 (where the cafe is) in Flopside and flip and go down the water on the left (where the chest and path to the item salesman was in Flipside)
