Sonic Fan Remix vs. Sonic Colors. That's something I can get behind.

As long as the 2D segments are nothing like Needlemouse, it'll be awesome.

I'm not a huge Sonic fan, but this looks intriguing. I might have to give it a spindash! *zing*

It is so odd how there ever became enough of a gulf to warrant "Generations", but this still looks pretty neat.

Another 3D Green Hill remake? That means I'm getting it :)!
The Mario series is the best! It has every genre in video games but RTS'! It also has a plumber who does different roles, a princess, and a lot of odd creatures who don't seem to poop!

....They've finally managed to recreate the physics of the original Sonic trilogy and brought back Sonic's 90s design....and your only reason for buying is the fact that Green Hill Zone is in it?

Also....There's more.

I like how 90s Sonic runs in midair.

I never stated that was my only reason for wanting to buy the game. I loved the 3D Green Hill Zone remake in Sonic Adventure 2, and that was a great game on its own. Regardless, though, this game looks great, and I really look forward to it!

For the uninformed: The whole game is to be made up of remade levels from across the past 20 years of the franchise. Excitement ahoy.

Well, Nintendo made SMAS, and then... made it again, so I actually don't have a problem with this.

Also, I never got to that Green Hill Zone remake in SA2, but that's probably because I lost interest in that game very quickly (the GCN version, to be specific. That was in it, right?)

I will hold off judgement until I can play it, but I will say that how interested I am to play it will depend on how much the levels are remade from earlier levels and how much of it is just thematically inspired by them. It's going to be a tricky tightrope to walk, too. Go too far into remake, people will complain about nothing new, but the old games have some of the best level design the medium has seen, and I don't know if the people that have been doing Sonic lately have the same ability to create.

They managed to come pretty darn close to recreating the physics of the Genesis trilogy after shrugging it off for like 10 years now. I consider that an achievement. Whether the worlds included in the game are based on previous ones or not is a non-issue for me.

*sigh* This game does look awesome, but alas, it's only coming to the PS3 and the 360...

Nintendo games look awesome too. Super Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros Melee and Brawl, the Metroid Prime games (I've only played the first one, but I have seen the other two in action)..

Well, that's true. And I suppose no-one's ever played Sonic games for their looks... have they? I mean, the demo for Unleashed had some nice scenery, but this is a series I don't vest as much interest in as I used to.

I alway considered the graphics to be one of the main things SEGA has pushed for Sonic. It kind of goes hand in hand with the old Blast Processing stuff, how it all looked so good going that fast. Then you slow down and it looks even better. Though I guess they haven't used the brand for new stuff(graphics wise) lately, so that kind of falla apart.

Played the new demo. It... wasn't too bad!

The classic mode physics are almost okay, which is a giant step up from Sonic 4. And the X button boost thing in modern mode is fun and lets you go ultro-fast at almost all times.

What exactly do you mean when you say "almost okay"? Do you mean you don't like most of it, or it's actually not too bad, or what?

Classic feels sluggish and like he's always moving through tar.  Also, I had some trouble keeping track of where I was and what was Badnik, everything is in vibrant colors.  Modern is pretty good, and seems to have the old branching paths plan.

It's good to know that the Classic mode physics are better than Sonic 4's physics (I downloaded a demo of it on my phone and was highly disappointed). I don't like the inclusion of the boost in Modern mode because Sonic is about momentum-based gameplay :/.

To be fair, most of the later stages look like there are less places to boost. This is a good thing.

« Reply #25 on: October 21, 2011, 10:18:26 PM »
I'm going to disagree that the boost and Sonic being about momentum. As much as speed was important and you could just power through levels, you're just as likely to fly right into trouble and missing the better path doing that, and it's about knowing when to not go at breakneck speed.

I wasn't referring to speeding through every level. Let's say there's a slope that curves and extends up to a ledge, like they have in every 2D Genesis sonic game. If you didn't have enough momentum to get up the slope, you can just activate the boost instead of going back and gaining more speed or using the Spin Dash. Now that I think about it, why did they bother making Sonic's boost move when he has the Spin Dash? That was the entire point of making it in Sonic 2...

At least in this game we have Classic Sonic to get your Spin Dashy momentumy physicsy gameplay on. I'm just happy they've refined Modern Sonic enough so that his levels aren't all "BOOST BOOST BOOST STRAIGHTLINE BOOST".

I don't know. I heard good things about it but I saw some Modern Sonic gameplay and was disappointed that about every level just randomly turned into a 2D side-scroller. That's what Classic Sonic is for. I was hoping to see many of the old levels recreated in full 3D, similar to Sonic Adventure 2's Green Hill Zone. That boost ability just completely ruins the game as well.

Also, why does Super Sonic jump just as high as normal Sonic? Yes, he has more acceleration, but his better jumping abilities are what made him stand out from other characters' super forms.

So Modern Sonic is fail and Classic is win? This game is so accurate!

Modern does turn into 2D a lot but the movement is very different than Classic: navigating with midair dashes, homing attacks, and boost versus Classic's spin dash.

I'm actually enjoying Modern more because boosting is so pimp. But Classic or Modern, this game kills Sonic 4.

Something I really appreciate about this game is that every rating and challenge is based almost purely on raw speed alone. "Collecting" bull[dukar] is kept very minimal; time is king. Sonic Generations is basically a weird racing game.

Another thing I like is the fact you can choose the music at all times. You can play every single level listening to "Sonic Boom".

I was finally able to get it on Steam, but I got low FPS. Minecraft runs smoother with Fancy graphics and Far render distance. Any way to fix this?

Reprogram Generations so all its graphics are made out of giant cubes with 16 x 16 textures?
