Video Game Chat / Competitive Pokémon

That's what you get for using a "balanced" team rather than plowing through everything with your starter.
You might not know this, but the main point of Pokémon is to battle your friends. To even begin to do this, you need to level six things to Lv. 100. And that's just for a single bare minimum team. And if you want to do it well, you have to level them from newborns and according to invisible secret stats. Hundreds to thousands of hours needed just to be able to play the "real" game.

Compare to a fighter like MvC3. To play the "real" game, you similarly need to invest hundreds to thousands of hours training in the systems of the game to be able to achieve anything the characters are capable of at your whim, but you have to train yourself to be better, as opposed to mindlessly mashing A for 1000 hours to make your artifical stats raise. This is why Pokémon is bad and why MvC3 is good. One flushes your time down the toilet; one invests your time in a skill.

Historical Note: I did not post this as a thread. Someone split it from posts out of the Weekly Releases thread.

Forum Games / High Definition

Write the dictionary definition of a word and the other people try to guess the word. First correct guesser gets to post the next definition. Not sure how helpful Googling would be for this but to maintain fun you probably shouldn't.

Video Game Chat / Lizard Dude Wii Ketchup Project
« on: January 18, 2011, 12:10:38 AM »
For the last year+, I have not used my Wii because the disc drive developed a nightmare gigavolume banshee wail so loud that it rendered playing any disc game impossible. Due to laziness and xtreme procrastination I delayed sending it to Nintendo but the weight of all the games I haven't played yet because of it has now become unbearable so now is the time.

The purpose of this thread is to help me not forget anything I should have played in the last year. I'm going to list the games I already plan on getting and you remind me of anything I missed.

Super Mario Galaxy 2
No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Kirby's Epic Yarn
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers
Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles
Boom Blox Bash Party
Metroid: Other M
Walk It Out

Syncopation in the Super Mario Bros. theme

An interesting little look at the evolution of SMB Overworld. Note the part at the end about how he plays it live now.

Video Game Chat / Die2Nite
« on: December 27, 2010, 10:47:34 PM »
Let's play some Die2Nite. It's one of those real-time browser-based games. This one is about towns of 40 people surviving in a zombie apocalypse.

Unless you have a Hero (paid/earned) account you can't choose your town but you can form coalitions of 5 people that will all join the same town. Go ahead and start in a random town; I'll invite people to my coalition and once we're all dead in our initial towns we can groupjoin a new one.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is a platformer. Fantastic wall-jumping wall-sliding action, brutal difficulty, tons of characters, collectible out-of-the-way items, secret mini-game worlds, references to classic videogames, references to tons of hit indie games, a really cool Light World/Dark World structure, and most importantly it screams its own name at the title screen.

Discuss SMB here.
