Video Game Chat / Game Review Site

Can someone tell me what the name of the video game review site that has the pie graphs is?  It was very helpful, but I forgot the name, and now all my old bookmarks are gone.  I especially liked it because it was the only review site I could find that told how long it usually takes to complete the game.

Matthew Gideon called, he's gonna need you to go ahead and give his show its logo back.

Anyway, my pet peeve is the fact that the "no political discussion on Fungi Forums" rule means there will be no threads relating Mario to another famous (as of last night) plumber.  I mean, there's material for humor there...  ; )

For the SNES version, I got to level 80-something before quitting in frustration, because by then you're blasting those annoying mushroom guys that need to be bombed two times in quick succession. And I managed to get through the 1-P mode... eventually... I think that mode just takes a lot of combos to clear successfully.

Yeah, the furthest I've gotten is round 83.  The bad guys shouldn't be allowed to throw down waves of those double-kill mushrooms.  That's just sadistic.  The 2-P mode isn't bad, but I don't find it as fun s 1-P (even when 1-P is being ridiculous).  I'm also disappointed that the pumpkinhead guy isn't named "Pumpkinhead" in honor of the "classic" horror film.  : )

The discussion on this thread reminded me that I have a copy of "Wario's Woods."  I bought it online about 8 years ago, then put it away after a couple weeks.  The furthest I got was to round 26, and toward the end of my playing it it was really frustrating.  Anyway, I found my cartridge a couple weeks ago.  On my first game I played for 2½ hours and got to round 67 before I got a game over, despite not having played it in years and being increasingly tired while I played it.  So yeah, that games a lot easier (and thus more fun) than I remembered it.  Or rather, I got a lot better at it somehow.

I can vouch for "Aladdin" for Genesis and "Wario's Woods" for Super N.E.S. being fun, but I think "Batman" for N.E.S. is just frustrating.  My buddy loved "Quackshot" but I never played it due to my belief that a video game based on a Disney cartoon couldn't possibly be good.  Obviously this was before I was talked into trying "Aladdin."

Has anyone played "Cybernator" or "Demon's Crest?"  Those are said to be great, overlooked games.

We should make the Nintendo Nebula a meme.  ; )

I remember "Uniracers!"  It was advertised a lot, but I never played it.

I'll add "Overkill" to the list.  It's a vertical-scrolling shoot-'em-up like "Galaga" for P.C.  Neat stages, neat enemies (several of which are enemy types with different species for each planet), and genuinely challenging on the right difficulty setting.  Unfortunately it's short.

I would include "Space Harrier," "Astro Warrior," and maybe "Kid Chameleon," but it's been so long since I played them that they might not have been nearly as good as I remember.

I don't quite remember Oddjob being that short...

I think Lizard Dude meant Nick Nack.

And I'm guessing few if any recent games can compare to the awfulness of some of the games of the '80s (don't read that as meaning all '80s games were bad, because I'd be the last person to make that statement).  I'm talking broken Atari ports, senselessly difficult N.E.S. games with no save or continue features, and edutainment games that could make kids hate learning.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there doesn't seem to be a thread for underrated games.  I think an exchange of favorite obscure titles could enrich many a gamer's life, and maybe even spur some interesting discussion.

First up I'll nominate the "Turrican" series (I've played "Mega Turrican" for Sega Genesis and "Super Turrican" for S.N.E.S., which are two different games, not ports of the same).  These are very addictive, very arcade-like techno-space-themed sidescrollers with amazing music.  It is very easy to compare them with the "Metroid" games of their time, and it is very easy to see the "Metroid" games' superiority, but at the same time this series deserves plenty of kudos (and sequels) that just don't seem to be out there.

Secondly, "Skyblazer" for S.N.E.S.  I don't remember hearing anything about this game when it came out (1993), nor do I remember knowing it existed before this summer.  Bought it, almost done with it, amazed by it.  Immensely quirky, immensely enjoyable sidescroller with beautiful backgrounds and creative enemies and levels.  I really don't know why this wasn't popular.  It's not at the absolute upper echelon of S.N.E.S. sidescrollers where games like "Super Mario World" and "Super Metroid" live, but it's not far away.  Definitely more than you expect from an unknown title.  It's not on the Virtual Console, but if you have a working Super Nintendo I suggest you buy a cartridge of it (it's available for very cheap online).

I'll stop ranting about my own (ancient) favorites and open the floor to others.

It probably does look like a jellyfish to a regular person, but I've played through "Metroid 2" and "3" so many times in the past 10 years that I have Metroids ingrained in my brain.  Also to me it looks like it has those teeth (or whatever they are) that Metroids have, and doesn't have those skinny dangly tentacles that most jellyfish have.

Incidentally, my friend says he can see Mario's face in it, too.

As I understand it, colors in pictures of nebulae are enhanced, but not randomly selected.  The colors of stars and gas are based on their chemistry.  Closer nebulae can be seen with faint colors, and the levels of those are greatly increased for photos in books, magazines etc.  Our instruments can't see any color in further nebulae, so colors are added based on their known or hypothetical chemical compositions, giving an impression of what they might look like (again, with the contrast turned up).

Edit: I should probably post where I found the picture. - http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap080825.html

So Mario's father is his arch enemy and his sister is his love interest.  Star Wars much?  ; )
