It's time we talked about this.

Most of the rumors come from this French website, though IGN claims they have anonymous sources of their own. But IGN is also IGN, so yeah.

What they agree on:

  • More powerful than the 360 (either "significantly more" or "just a notch higher")
  • Standard PS-style controller with motion controls, also a 6-inch touchscreen (the French website calls it a "Super VMU on steroids")
  • Games can be streamed from the Café to the controller, but probably only when the Café is on and within a certain distance.
  • Backwards compatible with Wii games, controllers, and peripherals
  • The Café and probably some Café games will be shown at E3, but probably not playably
  • No one's announced a Hot Café mod for it yet

If this is true, and Nintendo does it for a reasonable price, it could end up being a lot like the 16-bit generation, neh? The Wii is the NES, the 360 is the Genesis, the PS3 is whatever maybe a TurboGrafx, and the Café is the SNES.

Sony and Microsoft won't be putting out new consoles any time soon -- Move and Kinect are their next-gen consoles. So we'll end up with three consoles, all with HD graphics and motion controls, with Nintendo having the best motion controls and quite possibly the best graphics, with their competitors in no position to release new consoles (they just invested way too much in getting up to speed with motion controls, and development costs are too high as it is).

This would be pretty sweet if true and not expensive.

Do not want.

I have enough gaming stuff to buy already without a new console adding about 50% to the collective price tag on my wish list.

I'm kinda surprised that rumors about a Wii successor are sprouting up, especially if they're true. I think the Wii could probably survive another couple years at least. Correct me if I'm wrong, I mean, I'm no analyst... it just still doesn't feel the same as when the Nintendo 64 and GameCube were almost over.

But then, that could be because there's no new PlayStation or Xbox yet, like you said, because they just added the Move and Kinect. And it could be that I only don't think of those as signs that it's Nintendo's move because I don't care to get a Kinect.

Not that surprised. I haven't felt like the Wii was going to buck the 5-year console cycle. I am pleasently surprised at a playable version so soon. Also, I wonder how much backwards compatability this one'll have.

I'm extremely glad to see Nintendo realizes that the Pac-Man Vs. / Crystal Chronicles / Four Swords Adventure era provided some of the most unique and enjoyable multiplayer experiences ever and is devoting an entire console to the concept.

Good times they's a comin'.

If this system has forced multiplayer games like Pac-Man Vs. or Four Swords Adventures, I'll release a colony of dickants into Bozeman, Montana's water supply.

Oh man, I didn't even think of the possibility of more of those games. While I never played FSA, Pac-Man Vs. was so much fun. Man, Nintendo, still killin it with their multiplayer...if your in the same room. But still. Awesome.

Not at all, merely stating, unnecessarily at this point I'm sure, that Nintendo has a poor multiplayer set up. I still prefer having people be in the room while I play, but since that's not always possible, don't make it a whole song-and-dance to play over the Internet.

Now this looks more like it. I haven't had a desire to spend money on a Nintendo console since the DS, hopefully this changes things.

(and yes I bought a DSi that was because I didn't want to)

Wait, it uses regular lithium batteries? Come on, Nintendo, the amount of people screwing their Wiimotes with third-party battery packs makes it pretty bloody obvious that this is something people want...

I decided to look at every single registered domain that started with "nintendo". After five minutes of extensive research, I can say with almost 100% certainty that Nintendo's console will be called the Beem.

Just look at the evidence:

NINTENDOBEEM.COM
- Registered on May 24, 2011 through the same company that registered NINTENDOWII.COM and NINTENDO3DS.COM. This was registered nearly a year before any of the next-gen speculation began.

NINTENDOBEEEM.COM
NINTENDOBEAM.COM
- Registered on May 28, 2011 through two differed registrars. This obviously isn't just a coincidence.

NINTENDOBEEMSTORE.COM
NINTENDOBEEMSHOP.COM
NINTENDOBEEMGAMES.COM
- All registered on June 1, 2011.

Also, the domain BEEM.COM was apparently purchased on January 31 for $136,000. Nobody's going to drop that kind of money on a domain name unless they have a vested interest in the name.
http://wii2blog.com/could-beem-be-project-cafes-real-name/

When you look at the evidence, Beem is the only name tha really seems to make sense.

∃EEM <- anyone know a unicode or font to make the "M" look like a rotated "E"?

Edit:  Oh well, that was fun.

Eh, I don't know. It doesn't really look enough like text at a quick glance. An average person who looks at it will see some squareish threes before they see a word, even if it's only for a split second, and I have a hard time seeing Nintendo doing something like that. Maybe it just needs more revision, but you'd think they'd have a pretty finalized logo by now. And the story on wii2blog for how that guy found the logo is rather dubious anyway. But it's possible that he just made that part up to co-opt the broader "Beem" speculation that other people had already done.

I do like it better than "Stream", though.
