^ I always think of a Harry Potter character when I see that "Dad" guy, for some reason. Maybe crossed with Daniel-Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood.

...And I guess I lost, if only because that precise concept had never directly occured to me, but it's not inherently that amazing. Obviously, a controller needs to be contoured to the hand, and a trigger button where the index finger will rest--directly opposite a joystick--just makes sense.

I thought that was fairly well known. If you look at the Virtual Boy controls, it's also very similar. I'd be willing to think that Nintendo would trademark that sorta shape like they did with the cross control pad design.
