Title: Worried about the future of Mario
Post by: KoopaTrooper on June 08, 2013, 11:58:54 AM
For the past 4 platforming Mario games, Nintendo has basically made the same game. You could say there are different power ups but that's like saying each Pokemon game is different because it has different Pokemon. The graphics have been the same style since NSMB, and while they try to add things like carrying Yoshis and lots of coins, they come off as cheap gimmicks. I feel Nintendo is going the route of other big corporations and not caring about its customers.

1. NSMB is a sub-series, not the main series.

2. Nintendo didn't make a machine that focuses only on watching TV and spying on people. I think we're getting the better deal here.

If it isn't the main series then what is? The SMB series died 20 years ago.

You can't seriously be discouting SM64, SMS, and SMG as part of "the SMB series". If your criteria for that is two-player options and side-scrolling, then... well, the whole point of NSMB was to bring that back, like it or not.

I'll take what we've got over what we had during the GameCube era any day of the week.

I for one liked Super Mario Sunshine.

Besides not being so big on Sunshine I also refer to the coincidental drought of real Mario games at that time. The best RPGs were all made in the early aughts but wow where did the real-time face-stomping action go?

Remakes on the GBA.

Nothing but remakes.

(which I'm actually fine with. That's how I first played SMB3 and Yoshi's Island.)

Don't forget all those spiffy e-Reader maps in SMA4.

I never had any of those. I didn't have an E-Reader. Made me a little sad.

Yes, but they only release series 1 and 2 of the cards.  Maybe we'll get all the levels on Wii U eventually.

Back when these forums got started, in the late N64 and early Cube era, there was thread after thread of people begging, pleading, dreaming, and scheming for new 2D Mario platformers.

Now that we get them constantly, sometime multiple a year, as well as 3D brilliance like SM3DL and SMG2, people complain about it.

Because they're all basically the same game.

The levels are completely different each time. That's what actually matters. Graphics and power-ups are just fluff.

Have you actually played SM3DL? The future of Mario is bright.

It comes off as a over the top attempt at grandeur and useless branding worthy of Disneyland.

Part of the plot is that the tree with the Super Leaves had the leaves blown off by Bowser and misused by his minions. Of course the game is going to have a lot of tailed creatures.

NSMBU was lovely. I played it backed up by CommodoreJim on Boost Blocks and we had a good time, him not being too huge a Mario fan; when we'd play NSMBW I'd blaze ahead, he'd die all the time, it wasn't the best thing. The best world 8 ever, exactly what I was hoping it'd be: it's set in the grounds and interior of Peach's Castle, renovated by Bowser. Good bosses. Good levels. Good powerups. Good game. You smoked all of it, Kooper.

The way I see it, we're still getting sweet new games once or twice a generation, with RPGs and spin-offs still coming as regularly as they did before, only we're getting new platformers as well to tide us over. And that's fine.

I'd make the claim that NSMB2 was really the only one that didn't add much, anyway. Wii had 4-player multi, which Miyamoto said he'd wanted in for a while, and U had that and the touch-screen mechanic, which has made griefing infinitely more enjoyable for *******s such as myself.

Besides, I daresay Nintendo won't let the Wii U slide by without a new Galaxy title or something else amazing...

Oh good, now Super Mario 3D Land is a sub-franchise. I thought there was some unspoken rule about using "3D" in the name of any console game made after 1997, but Nintendo's always been one to raise the bar.

The only thing I've criticized the New series for has been the overflow of irritating voices in the music (BAH BAH, baby Yoshi voice in NSMBU), and its never-changing art direction. I do rather enjoy NSMBU's laser sharp graphics, etc., and hey, it definitely fits the theme. I've always jumped on Donkey Kong Country Returns (and now Tropical Freeze DEFINITELY) for having what I think is the snazziest art style and highest level of organic detail along with action-packed levels. New Mario has always seemed pretty relaxed by comparison, and the Tropical Freeze trailer got me pumped up. Seeing the Mario Kart 8 trailer, it would've been great if THAT had been what 3D World looked like with open, sprawling levels.

Don't get me wrong, I am jazzed about 3D World for sure. I DON'T believe, however, that this is going to be the definitive 3D Mario platformer to define the Wii U platform. Regardless of how polished it looks or how solid the gameplay is, 3D World just couldn't hold a candle to the masterfully crafted Galaxy series. We're only several months into Wii U's 5-7 year lifetime. Nintendo wouldn't punish us by having 3D World be the answer to the Wii's Galaxy 1 & 2.

Im really really worried, just the same stuff of saving the princess at NES style and now with 3D Land  Im like, ¿Cat Mario? are you freaking serious?...
But well atleast they combine 3D, with Nes always-stuff and Mario 2 from Nes and SNES in Mario all star...so, maybe MIyamoto have a trick over the hand

I hear so much criticism about how the NSMB series is the "same game, but with different levels, items, and gameplay." If I'm not mistaken, is that not what individuates every platformer-style Mario title? Incidentally, Mario looking the same in every game (also known as having an identity) supposedly indicates that Nintendo is lazy.

What. Did you just say that they should make a game as a sequel to a game that not only spawned it's own spin-off series, but was released in 1995? Why?

For what it's worth, I have no respect for either series, but I keep playing NSMB games (except NSMB2) because they *are* delightful in two-player mode. Also, less xenophobia than COD, as I understand it.
