Has anyone ever attempted to caputre every instance of the SMB overworld theme on video? Do we know of every instance??

I am going to make such an attempt. Thing is, I don't know every instance. Do we have a list that has the games that the SMB theme is in? I know some games have more than one instance (Mario Party 5, for example, has five instances) and some Mario games don't have it at all (Mario Kart 64).

Let's start out with every Mario game that has it. This can include the first 5 or 6 notes (like in Mario Paint) or a character singing it (Mario in the shower in Mario RPG and Superstar Saga)

Well then, before we start compiling videos we'll have to have a list.  It will probably be best to organize it by system.  I can maintain the list, we'll just keep adding to it as we go, so post any game that it appears in that I'm blatantly leaving out.

It's hidden as an easter egg in Super Mario World's Special World. The theme is also in every Paper Mario title to date, not to mention Super Mario Bros. Deluxe.

I don't think SMBDX counts. I'd forgotten about it being in SMW...

And, like Toad said, it is indeed in Mario Paint, and M&L: SS.  It's also in Super Mario Sunshine and Galaxy, SM Advance and SMA4 (if those count).
If she is indeed genetically mutated such that she has an eye in the back of her head, then I guess that she is genetically mutated and has an eye in the back of her head.

If SMBDX doesn't quality, logic dictates that the SMA series shouldn't, either. Just sayin'.

I was also thinking we could video the number of times the theme is in a game, if it's in multiple times (such as all five of Mario Party 5's instances: 3 in the Popstar Pirahnas minigame, 1 in the chance time! spaces [or equivalent], 1 in the ending credits)

Remakes only count if there is a new verison of the song. Mario All*stars game selection and SMBdx's title screen qualify for being new remixes or having snippets of the theme.

Heh.. I kinda meant just any/all that occur in the games.

I have here a list of all the console instances that I could think of. This is by no means comprehensive, and I know a few games are missing. To be honest, I ran out of paper. Anyway, to the list! Nice project; I hope it goes through! I believe you forgot two more occurrences, though. In Paper Mario, when you jump in a pot in Bow's Mansion, you turn into an 8-bit Mario. While you're an 8-bit Mario, the theme plays. The same thing occurs in Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door, except you fall through a hole in a ventilation duct in the X-Naut Base which leads to a dressing room. After opening the curtain, Mario and his partners turn 8-bit. While they are 8-bit, the theme plays.

I'll check back often to help out, and I would really like to see when this project gets completed!

The Mario series is the best! It has every genre in video games but RTS'! It also has a plumber who does different roles, a princess, and a lot of odd creatures who don't seem to poop!

Ok, so I think I'm about ready to start filiming the first few games, but I need some help. The best recording device that I have is a Flip recorder. It can record up to thirty minutes, and has a USB plug-in. If I use it, I'll be recording a tv (or DS) playing the theme.

Is there some way that I can maybe hook it up to the computer and record directly from that? Or maybe an alternate method..? I mean, recording a tv/DS is fine, but we have a fish tank in the same room as the games, and what I'm afraid of is the fliter sound interferring with the video sound.

I may do a test movie first, just to see how interferring it might be. Any help is appreciated. :)

Does your Flip recorder have any A/V recording features? If it does, you will be able to record your games directly off of the TV. I'm not sure about your DS, though. If you want, I can record some instances in a few games and you can mix them in the video.

I can't do recording, since 1. I don't have most of the games and 2. I'd have no way to capture the video other than simply pointing the video camera at the screen (which definitely doesn't work).  Sorry.

EDIT: Also, take Super Mario Land off the list.  The Marine Pop/Sky Pop theme is distinctly different than the SMB theme, in my opinion (you may want to give them a listen just to make sure)

Oh, one more question: How long should each clip be? Let's say I was recording the Toy Time Galaxy song in Super Mario Galaxy. Would I start from the beginning of the level and wait for the song to loop once or would I just let the song play for around 15-30 seconds?

I don't think the Flip has any AV features. I'll have to mess with it some more to find out. Also, unless it's an extremely long wait to hear the theme, from the beginning of each level would be good, letting it get to the loop. I think sitting in the Special Zone in SMW is too long, maybe about ten to 15 seconds before the theme kicks in would be good (let the Special Zone song loop at least once itself).

I guess let's cap off at 30 seconds just for now. That way we'll know if we need to make a clip longer.

you may want to give them a listen just to make sure

I plan on playing through each game to make sure I don't miss any instances. I don't mean starting new files, unless the intsance happens in a spot near the beginning that would be impossible to go back and film (such as Mario singing in the shower in Superstar Saga)

Thanks for the help, everyone!

I actually just waited for each song to loop over once, so songs like Toy Time Galaxy took around a minute to loop. 30 seconds might be too short for some songs. If a song takes really long to loop, I think we should let it play for about a minute.

It also plays when you pick Mario's hat up for the first time.  Also, there are a ton of small allusions to the theme in Paper Mario.

I dunno if you want to add it, but in Mario Superstar Baseball, in between innings there's a short jingle that kinda incorporates the first 6 notes.

And I didn't see anyone else answer, but DDR Mario Mix has two occurances. There's an entire remix of it, and the original version also plays in the ending credits where you can dance to it.

I recall that in Wii Sports Resort's Island Flyover game, you can hear someone playing SMB in one of the cabins, however, all I've heard so far is the death music.  It might play the theme as well, though.

Well, during the intro, when everyone's hanging out in front of the castle before the M-Star crashes down, the SMB song is a bit more robust as if it's orchestrated. However, when the M-Star crashes down and everything turns into 2D objects, the song then repeats, but with a more Toy Time Galaxy-esque twist on it, more childish, more playful, in a sense. Also, slightly different notes, and different instruments. A bit more stacatto-y and jazzy, too.

For reference and recording purposes:

Mario Party 3 > Sound Room > Toad's Music Box > 10th page labeled "Story Cinema" > Prologue 2 (orchestra-sounding one) & Prologue 3 (Toy Time-sounding one)

Okay, I'm almost certain I heard the SMB theme coming from that house just now in Wii Sports Resort. It's usually the death music, but apparently sometimes it's the main theme too. If I have a DVD-R somewhere around here I might be able to record it.

I'm glad someone bumped this thread. It made me think of a couple of questions..

Should I make a list of games that I cannot cover (due to lack of owning a copy of the game, usually)?

What would be a good website to upload my videos to? I have a Facebook account, but I'd rather not everyone found out my real name here.. Not that I'm saying we all aren't trust worthy here..

GCN: Mario Power Tennis - in the Bloopers Reel, if that hasn't previously been noted.

It has, but thank you.

And now, a question: There are several videos up of the Mario theme all over Youtube (like this one, for instance).

Should I abandon the project, or should I press onward? Nobody else has yet to put them in any kind of order like I want to do..

Nah, go right ahead and put them in the order you want.

You could do it in the same fashion as the guy who has recorded every single Starman theme on Youtube......that fashion being chronological, and also... you could feature the box art or a screenshot for the game it was featured in so people could remember/have a visualizer.

Well, thing is, I would have to record the actual game in order to get the theme recorded at all. I don't have all those fancy capture cards and whatnot. I have a Flip and it does a good job, but the picture quality won't be nearly as crisp as say, those videos Kimimaru has provided.

Tell me which games you would like me to record and I'll see if I can record them. I think your Flip recorder would work better for 2D Mario games because they aren't as detailed as 3D games.

Actually, alot of the 2D games record better because they are less detailed. I don't know, but Mario RPG didn't look as good as SMB.

Anyway, another question: upon submitting to a website (like Youtube), should I submit separate movies for each game (ie: one for SMB, one for SMB2, etc) or maybe like one per system (one that contains all NES, one SNES, etc)?

You should probably upload separate movies for each game. It would be easier for others to find every occurrence that way.

Another appearance that was missed on both lists (I believe...) is in the cutscene that appear when you get all 96 exits in SMA2.

So, Toad, could you give us an update on progress? Are you still trying to find all the instances, then record them in one huge batch... or are you recording what you already have as you go... or...?

I've been trying to record what we have. I've got up to all the Snes instances, except for 8-bit Mario in Booster's Tower. I would have more, but we got some exciting news about our son (he could be home on Thursday!) and general lack of time have made the project hard to make progress on.

If someone finds an instance we don't have listed, give us specifics on how to get it (if it's complicated. such as the one jdaster listed above) and.. if I have some kind souls who could help me test..

But I am working on it. :)

I've got VBA, but only the Japanese ROM; not sure if the animation is any different (other than the text), though.

If SMBDX doesn't quality, logic dictates that the SMA series shouldn't, either. Just sayin'.

SMAS should count since it's a subtle arrangement of SMB and not exactly the same if you pay attention... namely, a totally new bass line was written, and some unique touches (which I love) are added in as well. As in, the accent notes in the 6th measure of the song that last 8 more measures. Also, the small group of ascending & descending notes (arranged in triplets or 16th notes?) in the 9th and 12th measure. I'm not sure of the musical term for it, but give it a listen and pay attention....aaaaand you'll notice. Also, the small touch at the end of the 14th and 29th measure.

I'm about halfway through with the N64 instances. Can someone else record Mario Golf 64 please (or gift it to my Wii. yeah right, lol)?

Here is a list of games I don't own that I think has the Mario theme..

The GBC sports titles (Mario Golf, Mario Tennis)

The GBA sports titles (again Mario Golf, Mario Tennis)

Mario Superstar Baseball and Super Mario Sluggers (I know MSB does for sure, not sure about SMS..)

and with M&L3 released recently, can anybody tell me if it has any new instances, or how many there are?

The project may go on temporary hiatus this Friday and Saturday. My sister and her husband is coming to town and there will be much gaming and hanging out with them to be had. :)

Yes, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story has a few instances, but I don't remember exactly how many it has. I think it has around 1 or 2.

Well, I have some bad news: The tv I had all of the old game systems hooked up to has gone out (I didn't have them all hooked up at the same time). I have my sister's old tv, which is just like the tv my Wii is hooked to, so recording will recommence very soon.

I don't know how soon, though, because in kinda related news, I need a root canal. The procedure is being done Thursday morning. Depending on how much pain I'm in, I may try to do some recording that night and this weekend.

Project update: I have a capture device now. I get some recordings done now, so I will get to them as I have time for it. Life  happens.. We are expecting our fourth child literally any day now (she was due Feb 26th, but the due date could be off by a week or so..)

The project lives!

Amazing how priorities change in just a few years' time. I thought I would have plenty of time for this video project.. I haven't forgotten about it, but some other life events have taken priority now over recordings of music from Mario games. That being said, I may still be involved in a recording project that will launch in the near future. I don't know if I am able to finish the project in its' current state though, sadly. And several new games have been released in the time since I started it.

I do plan on finishing this project. Eventually.
