what do you do with the buttons on sunken ship in mario rpg?

Do you mean the room with two buttons and a pile of barrels in the corner?

Try jumping aound on top of the pile of barrels.  One of them will come loose, and you can kick it on top of one of the buttons.  Then jump onto the other button and viola!  I can't remember what exactly happens. but it's got to be something good.
