Author Topic: Does it matter the order to play Paper Mario games?  (Read 14901 times)

« on: November 28, 2009, 01:21:30 PM »
Hi everybody I'm new here and I have a question.
OK I just bought Paper Mario and the Tousand-Year Door and I have Paper Mario 64 for Wii's Virtual Console already. I don't beat Paper Mario 64 yet (I'm stuck with Toy Box's Boss) and does it matter if I play Paper Mario 2 already? Or should I beat Paper Mario 64 first?

PD: I live in Mexico, so excuse my bad english
PDD: You may think that my username is "Superluigui" because of Mario's brother, Luigui is actually my real name!

It doesn't really matter what order you play the games in, but there are some injokes from the first game that appear in the next games. But no, no previous experience is required, though I would do it anyway. The Paper Mario series is a great series. :)

The two games have no connection apart from the title and gameplay. A few characters from the first game make cameo appearances in the second one, however.

I personally wouldn't play a game and its sequel simultaneously, but... no, I did that when I got stuck on Viewtiful Joe. Anyway, well, these guys are right, the two games aren't really connected, but if you want to see the, uh, evolution of the series from PM to TTYD, I'd wait it out.

Play the first, then the second to catch some of the nods the second one has to the first.  Don't play the third.

That's sage wisdom, folks. Take it to heart.

Thanks for the name suggestion. It's going into the hat suggestion box. Our next kid will have his/her name randomly drawn from the hat box.

Don't play the third.

What's wrong with SPM (Super Paper Mario, for the un-informed)? I thought it was great..

There's even more references and in-jokes in Super Paper Mario, so you'd probably want to play it.
We went to see them for the first time in 5 years because they were going away for 3 years.

It's not all that original, and technically not an RPG, but SPM is still a great game.

I guess it's not really that bad, but I never finished it, due to it being way too easy, and probably never will.  It has nothing on the gameplay of the first two, either.

I think you'll probably like Super Paper Mario if you liked the first two, since a lot of the non-gameplay aspects are similar (and quite a few details of the gameplay are similar, too). It isn't a true RPG like the first two, but that doesn't stop it from being a great game; personally, I think it's the second greatest Mario game ever created (my first is Galaxy). I would highly recommend it if you're playing the whole Paper Mario series.

I don't see why we can't have links or images in this.
Avatars would be nice too.

Loved PM to death, liked TTYD a lot as well, SPM seemed all quite meh to me.  Just sayin'.

And what is similar in the gameplay?  I fail to see any notable similarity.

Super Paper Mario is an awesome game. There is absolutely no reason not to play it.

Despite the combat in SPM paling in comparison to TTYD's unique, simplistic RPG-style battles, SPM is worth playing, but I'd recommend that if you do play it, do it before you play the first two, so the shock won't hit you as hard.

"Combat", by which you mean pretty much normal Mario platforming...
That was a joke.

"Paling" in comparison? How so?

Damage-based platforming with wonky hit detection just isn't a recipe for success.

All you have to do to beat most enemies and bosses is move slightly to either side to compensate for the recoil of your last jump.  To cite a rather extreme instance, it's possible to reach level 99 in about half an hour with this method (that's not to say that TTYD door doesn't have its game-breakers, but they're a tad bit harder to set up and still require you to go through most, if not all, of the story to use them).

RPG and platformer battle mechanics can be mixed, and mixed well, I just didn't care for how SPM's battles were done.  Also, Weegee has a point about the collision detection.

...what is similar in the gameplay?  I fail to see any notable similarity.
The way the game is set up is similar; the game is divided into chapters where Mario collects a certain item and then returns to a hub area, and the HP/Attack/Defense system is similar (although not in RPG), with items, coins to spend, and all of that. It's essentially a platforming game in an RPG format.

Actually, everything but the actual gameplay is virtually a carbon copy, what with all the similar elements and the re-used models/sprites and sound effects.

Why? He has a point, although recycling good graphics and FX isn't necessarily a negative tactic.
