Title: Any interesting boss fight experiences you would like to share?
Post by: Keiji Dragon on May 09, 2009, 02:04:30 AM
So yeah, I'm the kinda player who wants to find creative ways to finish off a boss in games, just because I simply think it looks awesome. <airhead talking>

One day, I played Kingdom Hearts II again from the beginning up till that point where you fought the Twilight Thorn. I got it's HP down to 1, but I didn't land a finishing move on it. It played that Reaction Command sequence for the final time, but after when Roxas throws that Keyblade at the boss and falls back to the ground, the boss lands on his head and is defeated, to my surprise. The head slam counted as a Finisher, while Roxas is still lying on the floor! I laughed so hard at that.

If it will make any more sense, I have it all on video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSw53drbvIA

So to reiterate the question: Do any of you recall any interesting boss fight experiences that you would like to share? (Examples: Won the boss with 1HP with no items, miraculous victory in the end, seemingly good battle turned upside down, sudden stupid death by accident, etc.)

(Yeah, it 12:30AM here, gotta get to bed. zzzz)

Here was something that wasn't fun.

I was playing Marvel Ultimate Alliance, battling Galactus. I was playing as Deadpool, and I switched to Captain America. As soon as I did that, Deadpool jumped off the highway and died (Shouting "HEY! That hurt!").

I ended up losing Cyclops the same way....

I'm just going to say "Mischief Makers" and leave it at that.

Since Paper Mario is so easy, I've come up with a number of interesting ways to beat several of the later bosses.

Specifically, My favorite boss is the Crystal King, and since his first attack (shooting Crystal Bits) is so weak, I can load on defense badges and FP-restoring badges, then charge my jump for a practically unlimited amount of time. This leads, obviously, to serious overkill. (Did over 600 damage at one point, heh)

Right now I'm playing through SMRPG and only saving at the beginning, so when I get a game over, I end up back at Mario's Pad with all the experience (although only for the people in your party at the time). So I just fought the Hammer Bros. at level 24.

Three things come to mind.

Left 4 Dead: The first time I got punched off a building by a Tank (which is the closest thing to a boss in that game). It was during the finale on the No Mercy campaign.

Half-Life: I was told by other people that you were supposed to leap up and shoot the Nihilanth's brain while you sat on top of it. But by the time I got to that part of the boss I had developed a hatred for it and wanted to kill it quick. I fired a RPG and aimed the laser so it went above its head and curved down into its brain for a one-hitter-quitter (for the brain). Not only that but the boss itself was ominous and very difficult.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night: After fighting a giant dragon warrior thing sub-boss the real boss of the game seemed almost easy. I'm told by nerds who play RPG games that often there are secret bosses who are more difficult than the real final boss; but it was the first time I had witnessed such a thing.

I laughed a good portion of the time while beating General Guy in Paper Mario.

Dead Rising: The Convicts. Three escaped prisoners in a military jeep who go gunning for innocent people for no reason. Regardless of how many times you kill them, burn their bodies, scatter their ashes in the river, and dismantle their jeep, they return every night. Their music is easily the best in the game, and there's a pretty big number of strategies to take them out.

Resident Evil 4: The first time I played, I was a lowly noob, not nearly prepared for the opening village sequence. On the third time I restart it, I wise up and become much more mobile, running in a big goofy figure-eight around the village square and nearby houses, scavenging for ammo and taking potshots at the occasional knife-wielding dude. And then I meet the first Chainsaw Guy. More chases ensue until I come across a locked door (locked since it leads to a later level). My health is in the red, the Chainsaw Guy is bearing down on me, etc etc. I finally kill him once and for all with my absolute last remaining shotgun round before Ada rings the church bell. Easily the most intense first half-hour of a game ever, even moreso than RE5 (since that opening level was pretty much just a co-op revamp of RE4's opening level).

It took me what may have been several hours to beat Queen Shroob in PiT, partially because I think I was semi-consciously trying to make it more difficult by using a minimal amount of Bros. Attacks.

Once, in a battle with the Crystal King, I had him down to 2 or 3 HP left, and I had no FP. Mario was frozen and was also close to death; I had no more Life Shrooms. I had Lakilester as my current partner, and Crystal King had divided into three. I could not hit them all at the same time for lack of FP, but I knew if it didn't defeat Crystal King then I'd lose the battle. So I used Lakilester's Shiny Throw and aimed randomly at the middle one-- and it was the right one. I won the battle in luck.

Truly intense.

My very first win against Culex was arguably the least-intense battle in SMRPG history: Peach, tactfully equipped with the Lazy Shell, let Mario and Geno perish after a turn or two and held her own for the next fifteen minutes by making liberal use of the eternally-recyclable Star Egg. Since Culex and his crystal cohorts were only capable of depleting one hit point per attack against Peach, my hundred per turn seemed more than reasonable. If that wasn't enough, Culex actually ran out of FP towards the end of the battle, resulting in the majority of his turns being occupied by a "Monster's FP is gone!" banner.

Thirtysomething relatively uninteresting turns later, the battle was mine.

Ah, yiss. I fought Odin-Powered Dr. Doom yesterday in MUA. Under the pain in my side of a passin' kidney stone. Most agonizing boss battle yet.

robotrek...

I can't remember his name but it was one of the last bosses, and I thought my one robot was right pimped out, but he was still doing really little damage, and I didn't realize till much later that my weaker robots actually had better weapons.

I literally spent 4 hours fighting him.

Half-Life:..I fired a RPG

You fired a video game at a boss? That sounds intense!

Anyway, I always thought fighting Rapheal the Raven in YI the first time is still pretty intense. The screen spins for crying out loud!

As for RPG's, I aways have fun fighting Fawful any time, in any form in the first M&L game. I always get a kick out of the scenes that happen right before/after the battle (or during, as in the case of the first battle).

The Axem Rangers are always a bit of a challenge for me. It doesn't seem like it matters what kind of level I am at, Bowser and Geno always seem to die at the point where they fire up the Breaker. Mallow can take at least one round (which is good since I use the round it recharges to recharge myself), but those two always die..

Also, this..

Right now I'm playing through SMRPG and only saving at the beginning, so when I get a game over, I end up back at Mario's Pad with all the experience (although only for the people in your party at the time). So I just fought the Hammer Bros. at level 24.

sounds like fun! What happens when you are level 24 and someone joins your party? Do they stay at level 4 (or whatever level they normally join you at) or are they super powered as well??

The ones who were battling alongside Mario keep the EXP, while those on the sidelines are left to wallow with their mediocre stats and levels.

I haven't touched SMRPG since getting to and stuck on Yaridovich.

Beating Boss Battles on Intense was... intense!  I was at about 120% damage when I beat Tabuu, so it was pretty close.  I swear, my heart was pounding for an hour afterwords.
Title: Re: Any interesting boss fight experiences you would like to share?
Post by: CrossEyed7 on May 13, 2009, 05:27:49 PM
If I saved after they joined the party, they keep all the experience they got. Otherwise, they just start at the level they normally start at. So I've got Mario with 193 HP right next to Mallow with 30 HP. I'm planning on getting each character up to level 30 one at a time. I've already gotten to where I can't use my best specials on the Hammer Bros. because I can't possibly have enough max FP at that point.

When I finish that, I'm going to restart another thing I tried a while back: specials only (except on Bundt). It's a lot of fun. It gave me a new appreciation of Mallow.

For Yaridovich, remembering that the first copy the pointer is on when he first splits is the real one helps a lot.

The copies surprisingly never give me any problems.  It's that darned "water-pulse" move.  KOs any of my party members with just two uses.

Group Hug is practically cheating. It's like killing Dr. Lugae with 2 Elixirs while Reversal Gas is on instead of fighting a real battle. Or like Whirling Exor. It's that game-changing.

I've always found the temptaion to exploit SMRPG's programming flaws by Geno-Whirling Exor to be far too great to deny.

That was post-boss fight, bro. When else would I talk about boss fights with someone else?

EDIT: if Toad wasn't joking: the cool RPGs are Rocket Propelled Grenades.

I was joking, but that's still good to know. The more you know..

I have decided to try doing the Mario RPG levelling thing. I've never done it before, and it's kinda fun. How do you get over the monotony of pummeling the Hammer Bros over and over again?
Title: Re: Any interesting boss fight experiences you would like to share?
Post by: CrossEyed7 on May 14, 2009, 02:48:55 PM
I think I've only been back there three or four times now. I usually get pretty close to the end before getting a game over.

It works best on the Virtual Console, of course, since it requires not turning the game off for long stretches of time.

What about Lazy Shell Armor? Make Peach wear it and keep using "Group Hug" to beat the game? That's my method of choice.

I wouldn't nescessarily call Peach's Lazy Shell a programming error by any means, but it certainly makes Culex that much easier.

One day I was playing Metal Gear Solid 2. I was using a GameShark code that gave me all the game's weapons with infinite ammo. I decided to unload my AK on Fatman. What happened next was hilarious.

Fatman didn't get knocked down; rather, my AK pushed him clear across the screen and caused him to grumble 50X faster than normal.

I replayed the "boss" fight at the end of Half-Life 2: Episode 2 recently. I say "boss" fight because you fight a large number of enemies you've encountered many times before under special conditions as opposed to fighting a singular something you've never fought before. You ride around in a car and throw sticky bombs at giant tripods of death called Striders, but first you have to kill their escorts that will shoot the bombs off. You can run the escorts called Hunters over, or shoot them with your guns, or throw logs at them (I like to run them over two at a time with turbo on). After you fling the sticky bombs on the Striders you have to shoot the bomb with one of your other guns to make it explode. All the while you are doing this the Striders are marching towards a base where a rocket is about to be launched and they are blowing up buildings on the way there. It is your job to stop them before they ruin the rocket launch! One of my favorite "boss" fights or at least end-game battles ever.

Cool boss fight story, bro.

I recently beat God of War and the boss fight was pretty FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFantastic. I tried several times one day and eventually gave it a rest. A few days later I tried again and had the game conquered within an hour of waking.

I beat that boss with ease on God difficulty.

There is a boss in GoWII that's legit hard on Titan difficulty.

Also the part in GoWI right before the final boss where hundreds of Kratoses attack you, I guess that's legit hard on God.

That means you had done it once before on a lesser difficulty setting. For the less perceptive readers: when I say I beat a boss battle within an hour of waking that means it was easy.

I had lent my M&L:PiT to my boyfriend. After playing through it once, he did a low-level run and beat the game at level 12. I was told that the final battle took three hours.

Beating the Elder Shroob Princess still takes my level fiftysomething team nearly a solid hour. Of course, I also refrain from using Bros. Items as an act of protest against how much the game pushes them on you.

Here's one!

The summer Mario RPG was released, my sister and I were so into it. We both started new files, and suddenly I was facing Exor, while she was still stuck at the Hammer Bros (note: she has gotten better at RPG's since then). I couldn't figure out how to beat Exor, so I stopped for a bit to clean our gerbil cages (pets at the time).

I come back to find that she was playing my file, had finished off Exor for me, and was just taking a nap for me at Mario's Pad before handing me the controller. I was stunned.

She told me about how she had discovered the Geno trick, and was surprised that I hadn't known about it. I found that it didn't work on bosses, so I gave up using it on bosses long before.

Sorry for the double post, but I have another one..

My first time fighting the Elite Four in Pkmn Blue. Ok, I was fighting my rival. We were both down to our last pkmn (his Venusaur, my Kabutops because everything else had been KO'd). Both of our HP were pretty low. I thought to myself that the next hit would surely KO my Kabutops and I would just try again after levelling up some, so I told him to Dig. Rival gets the atk in before I Dig. I watch as Kabutops' HP goes down.. to 1 before stopping (and nearly giving me a heart attack). Then I watched as Kabs used Dig (for a split second, I'd forgotten that Dig was the next move). I thought he fainted and had my finger ready to move to the power button..

Then Venusaur's next atk missed, I won, and the rest is history. :)

A RPG boss battle description double post. Christ on a Crimson Crackerjack.

In God of War II, at the end of the Theseus battle, I swore aloud against my will by the violence in slamming Theseus's head in the door repeatedly. That battle and the Perseus battle caused me to look up the two characters in my big classical mythology book I had previously purchased for a class and ended up keeping because it was cool.

Does the word really take that long to spell? Don't encourage Game Freak and their grammatical quirks!

Anyway, I think I may have mentioned this before, but not on here. When I fought Trunkle in M&L long ago, the battle itself wasn't inherently interesting, but I later learned that, apparently, he was supposed to, like, send out Mini-Me's at some point, which I don't think he ever did.

Oh, and on a related note, my brother's re-fighting the Shadow Queen in PM:TTYD right now. It's worth sticking around just for the BA battle music (which I forgot had creepy whispering and/or weird plumbing noises in it at one point).
