Wish granted, but your art studio is out in the middle of nowhere and you get recognized not for artwork, but for being a hermit. Also, you get chicken tenders, but there's a meat recall the day after you eat them.
About PAL vs NTSC: I did TV announcements in high school and used to see these letters all over the studio so I asked the teacher one day and he said PAL is a different signal and, if I remember, is what most of Europe uses instead of NTSC, which I think is the American standard. Not sure what Japan has though.
I wish I had Albert Pujols on my fantasy baseball team. I got snubbed in the draft order again this year.

General Chat / Not Really Video Games...but Games Nonetheless

I just posted about it in another thread but I thought I'd give it its own thread here.
Is anyone here a veteran of the old-school education programs for computers? Maybe you had them at school on those old Macs that everyone had in their labs or maybe you had them at home...or both!
Here were the ones I had at home...I used to have these on this really old Macintosh called a Macintosh LC, most schools seemed to have these computers too. I actually used that computer up until five years ago or so.
Math Blaster: There were four games in this one, they taught the four basic operations. One of the games was solving problems to build a rocket. There was another where you had to find the missing addend (or whatever number was in the middle) and got points you could use to shoot outer space trash. Another game was finding the right numbers to make the problem work called "Recycler" and there was the arcade-type game where you guided the little guy up to the right answer and also got to eat the food for extra points. I had this at school and at home.
Oregon Trail: I think everyone born in the 1980s knows about this game. A simulation of the westward migration which usually took the place of that chapter in your social studies book. You could cross rivers, hunt, and die of cholera. Lots of fun times with this game. I had this at school and at home.
Carmen Sandiego: If I recall, the computer game came out before the TV show did. I used to watch the TV show when I came home from school. It was always fun plus the singing group on there, Rockapella, was really cool. The game has you chasing a crook from country to country based on a clue, just like the TV show. You got a desk encyclopedia with it so you could look up anything you didn't know. I had the "where in time" one, my school had the "where in America" one in elementary school and "where in the world" in middle school. There was also a Europe one at middle school which I think was the hardest, probably because schools in the US don't teach much world history. The time one had to be my favorite.
Number Munchers: Another classic from what I hear. This one had prime numbers, factors, multiples, etc and you were this little green dude who had to eat the right answers while not eating the wrong ones or running into the monsters. My school had this one as did I. At my school there was also a game just like it but you had to eat vowel sounds, we used this in our phonics units in first grade all the time (the math one is a lot more advanced though--even someone in Algebra I could probably use it to brush up on their factors).
OutNumbered: An arcade type math game where you walked through a TV station and had to solve word problems. You also had to shoot this guy who looked like a TV who would give you regular math problems and code. The code matched up against what you got for solving word problems and you had to pick a combination to figure out where the bad guy was. This one was really addicting. I played it first at the computer camp my school had one summer (that just about everyone from my class went to) and got it for my birthday later that year.
Kid Pix: Not really a game but my school had it. I had it too. Basically you drew pictures and could add these awesome rubber stamp things to them and you also had some cool erasers like a firecracker. There was an addon pack you could get to make movies from your pictures.
Battle Chess: I learned to play chess with this one. It plays just like chess but when you capture someone they fight. This started out as a black and white program but they later came out with a color version that had music. My school didn't have this one but I did.
Windows Solitaire: Good time waster from high school. I lost so many minutes of productivity when we had computer classes with this one. There's a Mac version too but it's called Klondike and costs ten bucks or so to register it.

It seems the most common problem people have with math is a mental block.
You have to keep a positive attitude and an open mind with math. Don't let people scare you with stories of "how horrible Algebra is" or that "geometric proofs are a waste of time" or that "word problems are stupid" and "fractions are pointless". Most every application in math has a purpose (although you really aren't likely to use calculus at all in the real world unless you are a certain kind of engineer or a math teacher--if you have the option in high school, take stats instead of calculus, especially if it counts for college credit).
I've got a friend who says he is no good at math. However, he can do pretty well if he actually tells himself that he's good and gets some help when he needs it. For as bad as he thinks he is, he usually got a B in his high school math courses and aced tests he got help for (and by help, I mean from someone other than the teacher--I used to work on assignments with him at lunch).
Now if you really aren't good at just mathematical thinking, what you need is practice. Another buddy of mine had that problem (in every one of his classes, actually). However, he got instructions to do extra work for a semester. He wound up getting A's and B's in math (and science, with the exception of physics) all throughout high school.
And if you don't do any work in math it shows. A friend who had an A average in Algebra decided to take Algebra II and geometry at the same time. He worked hard in Algebra II and got an A. He slacked off in geometry and barely made a B. (He also had a 0% in economics for a short time since he didn't hand in his first three assignments).
I used to use computer programs to get ahead in math. There was a big set of CDs called Mind Power Math, not sure if they still make them, they had a course in every area of high school math plus Calc I (which you can use in college). No stats CD, but lots of good examples and practice problems. There was also an old Math Blaster spinoff called Geometry Blaster, which has to be the best program for proofs. And if you find you can't do your arithmetic without a calculator, better dust off that old copy of Math Blaster (I actually still have mine--as well as my copies of Carmen Sandiego, Oregon Trail, and Number Munchers).

In Melee, I usually play as Peach. I also like to use her in Mario Kart. Folks don't take me seriously whenever I play as her which allows me to do more damage to them.
I'm not sure when or if I will get Brawl. I may get it for the summer when I have most of my parties at my place, although I want Mario Kart and will probably buy that first. I'm sure that I'll stick with Peach though (in both), especially if her moves are similar to what she does in Melee.

Me at the bowling alley today...
Me: Man, I think I've lost my stroke (just threw my third gutterball of the game)
Buddy 1: Dude, don't throw gutterballs just to make us feel good (they had thrown more than me at that time)
Me: Nah, I think that was my wrist
(next time up, I throw two gutterballs)
Me: I swear, it's the Wii that's causing me to throw poorly
Buddy 2: Yeah, Wii bowling will do that to you
Me: My stroke is too Wiiified
Buddy 2: I can tell since you aren't getting the ball down low enough
Buddy 1: The bowling ball is not your half pound Wiimote
Me: Yeah, that last swing would have been at least a three on a Wii
(next time up, I get the ball down and wind up getting 8 pins)
Anyone else ever have this happen to them if they haven't done real bowling in a while and have played a lot of Wii Sports?

My high school used to celebrate it big time. All the guys in physics would make pi day shirts and the math teachers would try to sneak pi into the lesson somehow.
I went out with my buddies and one of them brought it up, some old memories came back. We joked that we missed the time of 1:59, which would have made it a bit more accurate (3.14159).
BTW: My pie was chocolate cream pie.

I once turned an unassisted double play at second base despite being a natural shortstop. I also have the distinction of being the only player in the history of one of the leagues I played for to hit for the cycle (one each of single, double, triple, and home run in the same game) and steal a base all in the same game. Oh, and I'm a switch hitter. Why does the Wii not allow one to switch their hands on the Nintendo Sports baseball game? (The new 2K one works more in my favor that way--just got it last week and love it!)

I don't know too many guys who bake cookies except guys who are actually bakers. One of my ancestors was a baker, maybe it runs in the blood? I've been baking cookies since I was a toddler.
