Title: Let's count movies PER REEL
Post by: Glorb on February 09, 2009, 02:32:16 PM
The original theatrical cut of Star Wars (before it was titled Episode IV: A New Hope), was roughly 11 reels, or 121 minutes.

One reel is generally accepted to be around 11-12 minutes.

Come one, come all...
We're gonna have a ball!
Just leave your cares and woes
And let your troubles fall!

We'll find a starry sky behind that cloud you're under!
It's such a perfect time for One! Reel! Wonders!

This thread sucks and unless you can confirm exactly how many reels were used in the theatrical presentation (or I guess maybe if you have a home video release with cigarette burns) you can't really say anything.  In the age of home video (and of course digital theaters), editors are probably concerned less and less with reel cuts.

This one's a stretch. But I applaud the effort.

Edit: Nevermind. There's like 30 of these now. This just happened to be the first I saw.

Neither can you; nobody refers to the reel-change blips as "cigarette burns" except for people who got it from Fight Club.

YEAH BOYEE

Actually, now that I hear that term, I think it's fairly appropriate.

I always wondered what those were.

I thought it was just stratches and dust and whatever on that old, cruddy film... Actually, I still sort of think that. So it's from when the reels change?
