So my younger brother got a drone last Christmas and, coupled with my post-Comic Con spoils, decided to put together a little Zelda homage!

Apologies for the non-embed -- I haven't posted a thread on here in, what, six years? Not even sure if that thing works anymore.

Video Game Chat / Let's *Not* Play, Apparently

So Nintendo called "muh copyrights" and is now fixing to get paid even more from videos with their stuff in it--which in this case, already amounted to free advertising anyway. Yeah, I'm aware it's not just Nintendo that can/has done this, but with as much as they've been bungling marketing the last few years, it's certainly hard to see how it's doing anyone favors. Thoughts?

Fan Creations / Love&Darkness: Vol. I - Available Now!

As a Kindle eBook - only $2.99!

For physical copies (Paypal button won't appear for some reason, but it's right below the cover image)

As you may have heard occasional remarks about around these parts, I did write a second book! Love&Darkness: Vol. I, that is: a collection of stories and poems I wrote from 2010 to 2012, wrapped into a thematically-connected compilation (part two indefinitely pending). The "set list" is as follows:

PART I – ACCEPTANCE
1 – All of My Ex-Girlfriends Are Monsters (Reggie DeFatales Must Die: A Cautionary Anecdote in Five Poems and a Limerick)
“So…then what you’re saying is, all your ex-girlfriends have, somehow, banded together, and are now ‘after you’?”
 “Yes,” Reggie winced.
“So I’m presuming you broke up with all of
them.”
“Correct.”
“And—and since I’ve never met any of them, I’m just going to, uh, take your word for it…they are actual, inhuman creatures?”
“Pretty much.”
“What, with, like, fangs and claws and stuff?”
“Some of them, yeah.”

2 – It’s No Use
3 – A Man’s Got to Have His Priorities
4 – But Crazier Things Have Happened
5 – [Citation Not Needed]
6 – Fear Itself
7 – The Aftermath Villanelle
8 – Were
“How many have lived to tell of this beast’s violence? Likewise, how many moons have waxed and waned with no one caught suffering from curious scars or delirium?”
“Just what do you suggest?” asked the husband with irritation. “That it is a different breed of abomination altogether?”
“The absolute contrary,” the leader explained solemnly. “It is my conviction that he has embraced his nature, and learned to control it.”

INTERMISSION I
i – The Three Little Porcites and the Big Bad Lupoid
ii –  Totally Epic
I threw my controller to the couch and stood up. “I’ve got an idea!”
“What, what is it?”
“If we get rid of enough vampires and zombies, maybe they’ll stop making so many stories about them!”
Eddie raised an eyebrow. “You think?”
“It’s worth a shot, isn’t it?”

iii –  Distribution Methods
iv – Amusement

PART 2 – ADAPTATION
1 – Hi!
I rolled onto my back, lamenting as I did that my brand new mattress was less comfortable than my friend’s old one. “She said she wants us to be closer, but it’s not going anywhere.”
“How many dates have you been on?”
“Seven.”
“And…what base are you on?”
“Still making a run for first.”
He winced. “I see.”
“I wish that was the only thing bothering me,” I sighed.
“What do you mean?”
I sat up against the wall. “There’s something…strange about her. I don’t know what it is, but I can’t ignore it.”

2 – Fyrewrit
3 – “One Thousand Ways;” or, “Reinvented.”
The cycle of rejection was abhorrent:
Within and out the home, her nature [darn]ed.
And so one dusk, the rain a raging torrent,
She packed her choicest instruments and ran.
With lantern-light her sole and guiding ray,
She staggered past the furthest dead-end street,
Then on the moors, she found a place to stay:
A crippled mansion, straddled in the peat.

4 – The Agents of Fear
Don’t ask me how I know what to call them. Perhaps it’s something I’m meant to, by the very virtue of their presence. It doesn’t matter, because I’m still not afraid. And that’s why I’m writing this.

Because it’s killing me.

5 – Unthinkable
6 – In Finiti
“On this day,” the Magistrate reiterated, pointing at an overlaid date, “a massive meteor shower, the Maslow Cluster, impacted Earth with the force of ten thousand nuclear explosions. Seventy-five percent of the planet’s population died immediately, or over the course of several months… What life survived was violently mutated by exposure to alien chemicals spread throughout the atmosphere and water.” Tima was again quietly awed by the man, showing such calm at the sight.
7 – Ctrl+C
They gave me something, before melting into space as swiftly as they’d appeared. It looks like an SD card, but it’s something much more—a tingling flooded my arm as I pushed it into the port, and when I tried to read the data capacity, there was only a string of strange pictographs. I could recognize one, though: the symbol for “infinity.”

They gave it with a single thought:
copy.
8 – Love&Darkness (A Song with No Music)

Game Help / Wii U Internetting, Minus TV
« on: January 02, 2013, 11:18:49 AM »
Okay, so I acquired a Wii U last month, but I haven't gotten around to going online with it yet because my apartment building has free Wi-Fi in the lobby but not in my room. If I I just plugged the console into an outlet down here, though, could I use the Gamepad screen to do everything online? I only ask because I keep hearing about some update process that'll brick you like nobody's business if you cut it out, and I'd hate to have "please look at the TV screen" appear at some point during that process when I have no TV screen to look at.

General Chat / Bad Endings

It's pretty simple, really: Which stories did you think ended poorly? I don't mean that it was an unhappy ending, but that the resolution (or twist) was silly, nonsensical, seemed rushed, or just left too many unanswered questions--or any other reason you can think of. Keep in mind that "story" here refers to books, films, and videogames--I'm not sure if TV episodes should count, but you're welcome to bring those up if a particularly egregious offender springs to mine.

I'll wait on my own opinions and see if this thread catches on or not.

Video Game Chat / The Holy Trinity, Or Whatever
« on: July 01, 2011, 01:39:35 PM »
So as you may have heard, a fair number of (American) Nintendo fans are going nuts because of the apparent decision to not localize The Last Story, Xenoblades, and Pandora's Tower. While I didn't know enough about these games to begin with to get too excited about them, I can understand how this is sort of the camel back-breaking straw for a lot of fans. Granted, business is business, but this is pretty much a perfect example of what... well, what I sort of promised I wouldn't grouse about anymore. In any case, what do you think? Does this bode ill for the long-term veracity of The Big N's "I'm sorry, baby, I didn't mean it" PR-speak as of late? Are you just going to shrug "figures" and hit up an import site for your region un-locked Wii? Are you going to complain on the internet for a while, then buy Skyward Sword anyway? Commence vocalization on this localization sensation! (Dalmations)

Not at the Dinner Table / "The E-Personality"
« on: April 03, 2011, 02:13:36 PM »
I recently finished Virtually You: The Dangerous Powers of the E-Personality by Elias Aboujaoude, MD, and it got me thinking like no other book in recent memory. This is particularly because many of the issues discussed within it were ones I'd been pondering for some time, well before it caught my eye at the school library. The book's argument is this: Though the internet is a force for good and a tremendous boon to the world in many ways, if we don't exercise moderation, it also runs the risk of turning us into childish, impulsive, inattentive, socially inept narcissists with zero privacy (worst-case scenario, of course). Simply put, the sheer number of things available to do online, as well as the speed and illusion of detached anonymity with which one can accomplish them, has serious implications for both human psychology and human civilization.

So what are your thoughts on the matter? Do you ever, say, buy over the internet things you never would in a brick-and-mortar store because of the disconnect with "real" money? Do you lose any empathy for tragic events in the news when you're hearing constant updates about it from five different sites alongside the day's hottest viral video clip? Do you think there are any dramatic effects dealt by a message board such as this, where fully formed identities take a backseat to what we can garner from a username and signature? What about the polar opposite, Facebook, where everything short of "What number am I thinking of right now?" can be answered in a matter of clicks, given the right privacy settings? I'll save my no doubt tl;dr-worthy thoughts on the matter for a while (including thoughts on the use of such phrases as tl;dr), and instead turn it directly over to you.

Not at the Dinner Table / Singularity, or The Future of Us
« on: February 15, 2011, 11:46:47 PM »
General link on the subject.

Time did a thing on this recently, and it got me thinking. For those unfamiliar, a "singularity" is basically a point in the future where technology will become so revolutionized, we can't even predict what life will be like afterwards. Currently, it's looking like that point will be when the exponentially increasing rate of technological advancement leads to computers that can surpass the combined totality of human knowledge and/or be physically integrated into our bodies. Some additional possibilities include genetic modification to modify ourselves and world as we please (as well as stop or reverse aging), and putting our consciousness into machines.

Personally? At first, the thought of this stuff scared the crap out of me, but now it mostly just makes me angry... mainly because I know that, from a scientific point of view, there's no reason to not do this stuff eventually. I mean, it's true--humans are just organic computers (you all debated about the Chinese Room, right?), and it's only a matter of time until we collectively create a superior being. But still... you call this progress? Okay, let's hypothetically take "making people immortal" for example: First of all, when we talk about a future where these kinds of things are possible, you know [darn] well that not every man, woman, and child on Earth is going to be able to take advantage of it. And how are we deciding who's going to live forever? Who'd even want to? How would this affect the world's population and resources, much less countless generations of the knowledge that living things are supposed to die? This isn't technological progress, this is what a five-year-old wishes for: "I wanna put my brain in a robot and live forever!" I know it's all theories at this point, but it's a selfish ambition--and for something being suggested by people who make a living predicting the future, surprisingly shortsighted. And treating the human genetic code like a Lego set? Don't even get me started.

So what do you think? The future's going to come no matter what, but how do you think revolutionary developments like these could affect humanity? Many things we do now with technology may have seemed surreal and unspeakable if you were to present them to someone from hundreds of years ago, but do you think these sort of accomplishments are different?

...But seriously, what's your opinion on those new airport security things? Are people overreacting, or is this another example of the government putting paranoia ahead of safety and privacy?

In any case, I personally think this is a pretty inspiring story.
