Title: Things in need of Pokéfication
Post by: Weegee on May 02, 2011, 02:26:41 AM
One would assume that 649 is more than enough to cover eveything that's ever existed, but Game Freak has proven otherwise. What organisms, objects and concepts have you always thought should be represented as a Pokemon? These stick out in my mind:

-The world's largest rodent, the capybara. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capybara) Even if it was [dukar]-tier Route 1 trash like Ratatta or COMPLETE AND UTTER CODSWALLOP WHOSE MOTHER IS A WHORE like Bidoof, I'd want one.
-Kingdra's well-camoflauged counterpart, the leafy sea dragon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leafy_sea_dragon).
-The near-indestructible tardigrade, AKA the water bear. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tardigrade) This microscopic mother****er can survive in a block of ice, a blazing fire, and even the vaccuum of space.
-A dolphin. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolphin) Believe it or not, there are currently no Pokemon based primarily on dolphins.
-This thing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetable_Lamb_of_Tartary)
-A Pokemon based on the ancient art of internet trolling. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_(Internet)) It would be like Porygon's ******* cousin.

I think it'd be hilarious if they made Pokemon based on famous historical figures or politicians.

Ooh, we discuss this in the chat some of the times. one of the most popular ideas is a Jack-O-Lantern. It'd be a Grass/Ghost type.

I once came up with a Ghost/Steel type. It started as a floating sword, then evolved into a suit of armor.

There's something wrong with the picture you posted.

It depicts a Bidoof that is alive and not suffering agonizing torture.

It's a Bidoof

That's torture enough

To me, there are other Pokemon who are for more deserving of disdain than Bidoof.

Title: Re: Things in need of Pokéfication

There haven't been any designs based off of other video game characters (not that I know of, anyway). GameFreak has done more than Pokemon, so you'd think they could throw in references to their past works (game consoles in certain areas notwithstanding).

Also, what is so bad about Bidoof/Bibarel? They're not my favorites, but they're not that bad..
Title: Re: Things in need of Pokéfication

Touche, but seriously, why is he hated so?

It has an ugly oblivious expression and it's far too common in areas where far better Pokemon can be found.

Since I didn't play much D/P/Pt and didn't really spend a lot of time searching for 'mons when I did I don't really have that much of a grudge on Bidoof. He wasn't even that useless in the part of PMD2 where you have to take him with you, nope nope

But Bibarel is just whack, what a waste of a beaver. Beavers are awesome and they so blew it

Dewott's got a beaver's tail despite being an amazing otter samurai, though, so Game Freak is forgiven

This reminds me of when I collected Beanie Babies as a kid, and drew up a list of all the animals I could think of that hadn't been made into one yet. I suppose that says something about Pokemon in more ways than one...

Anyway, cool thread. Let's see...

--That one virus that looks kind of like a spider-robot. I saw there was a microbe Pokemon in B/W (shades of Bowser's Inside Story for me), so why not?
--An actual starfish Pokemon. Am I the only one who thinks that, even by the current generation's standards, Staryu/Mie is really weird? It doesn't have a face, and it's... made out of precious gems, or something.
--On that note, a sand dollar Pokemon. It could be a Magikarp-type thing and evolve into... er, a mussel? A Eggecute-esque barnacle Pokemon? Hey, I live in the Pacific Northwest--cut me some slack.

I have other ideas, but some of them are ones I'm actually planning on implementing into a very heavily Pokemon-influenced book at some point, so I'd just as soon they weren't Pokefied. To be honest, I'd prefer it if there were more Pokemon that were at least superficially "original", or at least based on Japanese stuff that I'd have to look up and educate myself with. No more of this "change its color and one letter of its name" crap.

A bacteriophage would make a neat, if terrifying, Pokémon. What type would that be, do you think, Poison/Steel?

There needs to be a grass-type based on a snapdragon. Snapdragons are the most kickass flowers.

All in favour of a marijuana Pokemon?

I want to see a dragonfly pokemon with a Bug/Dragon typing.

That type combination would have been perfect for Flygon.

I've always thought that Yoshi, as a species, could work well as a "cameo" Pokemon. Green Yoshis would be pure Dragon-type (yes I am aware that Yoshi is a dinosaur and not a dragon but whatever), while other colours of Yoshi would be dual-type (Red = Dragon/Fire, Blue = Dragon/Flying, Yellow = Dragon/Ground) with matching movesets. They could be given Shells which boost the strength of moves corresponding to their colour. Black and white Yoshis would be version-exclusives.

Ankylodon and Triceratops fossil Pokémon. Rock/Dragon, one has higher Atk, one has higher Def.

Edit: Better yet, make the Triceratops an Electric/Rock with higher Sp.Atk, Ankylo Rock/Fighting with higher Atk.

I like that guy. He looks like he should start out as pure Flying type and then his final evolution is Flying / Ground. And next generation add in a branch where he turns into a waterspout instead.

It crossed my mind that its second type could change based on where it's been, like with Burmy and Wormadam. However, as there's only one pure-flying-type, and it's a legendary, I'd personally want to see it stay. Or perhaps give it a variation of Multitype, where it gains a second type by holding move-boosting items like Nevermeltice and Hard Stone. I dunno.

Proposed [dukar]ty moveset:

-Gust
-Sand Attack
-Twister

-Whirlwind

-Hurricane

Maybe it could also learn weather moves like Rain Dance and Sandstorm, as well as related attacks like Whirlpool, Fire Spin and Rock Throw.

There's not a lot of change between Ponyta and Rapidash, or Growlithe and Arcanine, or Seel and Dewgong, or Omanyte and Omastar, or Kadabra and Alakazam, or Pidgey, Pidgeotto, and Pidgeot, or Clefairy and Clefable, or Poliwag, Poliwhirl and Poliwrath, or Machop, Machoke and Machamp, etc.

I think less that all the Pokémon in gen 4 are terrible than I used to... but I still think a lot of them are over-designed. Gen 5 stepped back on that a little but there's still room.

It blows my mind that there isn't a mosquito Pokemon yet.  Bug/Dark of course.  I'd love to see it as kind of a cute bug with some classic Dracula elements to it.

Going in kind of a different direction, I'd love to see Poison become a more useful type.  Some of my favorite Pokemon designs I'll never use (especially Trubbish/Garbodor, but also Muk/Grimer and Koffing/Weezing), because Poison is such a worthless type.  It's POISON, why wouldn't it be good against grass?  Or most living things

Branching off that idea, I'd love to see an atomic explosion/mushroom cloud Pokemon as a Legendary.  Fire/Poison type.

The jack-o-lantern Ghost/Grass idea is awesome too. :)

I'd also love a jellyfish Pokemon that isn't an ugly ******bag.

I can't speak for how the game is currently, but Weezing always was very good as a defensive 'Mon. Competitively speaking though.

I'd love to see some Pokemon based off some of the creatures in the southern hemisphere. Australia and New Zealand especially. There are some freaky animals in this neck of the woods, there's no reason why they can't be adapted. I'd use the heck out of a dropbear Pokemon.

Quick correction: Poison IS super-effective against Grass. In Gen 1, it was also good against Bug Pokemon.

I agree about the mosquito Pokemon. Maybe it could start as a pure Bug-type larva thingy before turning Bug/Dark (or Flying) and learning lots of HP-draining moves.

I doubt there'll ever be an A-bomb Pokemon, for obvious reasons. If Kuro were still kicking around, I'd get him to make a legendary duo called Hirosaki and Nagashima.

There could be a whole region modeled after Australia. It could appear in a Ranger-like spinoff called the Pokemon Hunter:
Koalas? Emus? Tasmanian devils? Dingos? Platypi (Psyduck doesn't count, no matter what anyone says)? Bird/fruit-hybrid kiwis? Shoe-dwelling funnel web spiders?

Thanks for the correction on Poison types.  Can you tell I don't use them?  All I could remember is that after Gen 1 they lost super-effectiveness against a type.  And yeah, I can imagine an A-bomb Pokemon, cool as it would be, would also be a PR nightmare on a few different levels.

Ahh!  Platypokemon would be insanely awesome.  A pre-volution for Kangaskhan would give us a more obviously kangaroo-based pokemon, and could end the weirdness of Kangaskhan being born already caring for its own baby...

Poison's not really that bad. Poison-types can't be poisoned. They resist Fighting and Grass. A good number of them have abilities or types that neutralize one of their two weaknesses or make them ineffective.

Poison moves kinda suck though. They're pretty much only around to cause poisoning. But Toxic is better, and anything can learn that. Burns are better than regular poison, too, and Will-O-Wisp has made that more of a usable strategy.

Poison has gotten better over the years.  The main reason it seemed useless in Gen 1 was because most of the grass pokemon at the time were part poison.

Speaking of poison types, they could make a poison/rock line based on radioactive elements. Start with Cobalt 60, the. Radon, and end with Plutonium. Give it an ability where when it enters battle it auto poisons the opponent for 5 turns. Their names could be based on their discoverer or something like their usual use
