I spell it colour. How do you spell colour? Do you spell it with a U. Do you spell it with out a U but spell other words like favourite, harbour, honour and savour with a U. Do you spell it with the U but other words like harbour and honour without a U? Or do you just spell colour and all words like it without the U? How do you spell colour and other words like it? I usually spell all words like harbour and favourite with the U.

The only place I've heard someone seriously spell it "Colour" was for "The Colour of Magic", that Discword Novel. And even then, the author eventually just spelled it as Color.
Colour feels weird.

Nintendoobsessed, talking about that book is actually the only occasion I'll use "colour" rather than "color".

I spell it "Colour" but not on the internet and I spell it that way just to make a point. If I could go back in time and stop American English before it formed I would. Even though I'm American, I find that American English is another bad thing because it is unnecessary and it just makes me feel like I'm uneducated because it is the incorrect and the wrong way of speaking the English language. Don't even get me started with Southern American English.

Spelling colour with a U is really inconvenient when doing a cross-word puzzle. Why is American English so messed up anyway. No wonder all the people on sickipedia make fun of Americans.

A newspaper which I can't recall the name of right now decided to remove goofy spellings from American English to make it more American. Don't listen to nensondubois because he doesn't know anything about linguistics. American English is in no way incorrect or wrong. It is different from British English because America hasn't been part of Britain for 250 years, and both British English and American English have changed since 250 years ago. Some of the changes went the same direction and some of them went different directions. For that matter, consider even regional dialects and such.

From what I understand, nenson claims to spell "color" with a U because he is under the impression that American spellings are "wrong" so he's spelling it British style.

Well that explains why American English is so messed up. Still I feel American English is wrong and should be done away with. What about Boston English, the closest you'll get to British English in America?

Don't forget about the whole process of splitting from England. Perhaps denying the British way of spelling those words was our first way of saying, "Suck it!"

Actually, I believe that was part of it! Just like why we have the fork on the other side, drive on the other side, and have tie stripes that slant the other way (it's true).

I spell it "color". American here. I watched one Eddie Izzard sketch where he briefly touches upon how Americans and... um... British people?... how they differ in saying words. "You say "erb" and we say "herb", because there's a ****** H in it." He mentioned that he favors the American spelling of "through" as "thru" (I rarely see it like that except at fast-food restaurants, but whatever), believing that "through" has too many unnecessary letters in it and that it looks more like "thruff".
But one word I could never get used to was seeing "theater" spelled as "theatre". Just looks strange, always makes me want to say it as thee-a-tray.

My English teacher, normal in all other ways, pronounces "theater" "thee-AY-ter". Oh, and "nuclear" "nukular." I repeat, English teacher (I think I said this before, anyway).

I wasn't aware of how to say "nuclear" until the JibJab "This Land" cartoon. I remember Homer Simpson saying it incorrectly, I guess I heard W. Bush say it, and I didn't know that was wrong even though looking at how the word was spelled should have given me a clue. Reminds me of third grade when I was told that "route" was supposed to be pronounced "root" instead of "rout", then I later found out "rout" is the common American pronunciation. In any case there was a memorable "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" moment where Colin Mochrie mispronounces it as "root" and Ryan's probably thinking "oh, you Canadians and your silly words".
I've only been as far north as Vancouver B.C., so I don't think I've really gotten the Canadian experience, but close to the border it really doesn't seem that much different from America. Except for using the metric system everywhere, so that we initially went 50 mph when a speed limit sign actually said 50 km/h. I might like Canada's money better though, any excuse to have a loon in my pocket.
Anyway, back to British. Um... I really like their accents.

I say the former. Is that a regional thing like soda, pop, cola, or Coke?

I grew up using pa-CAHN for the standalone nuts, and usually PEE-can for the pie. My mom's from Texas and my dad's from New York, so that might have something to do with it. (I was raised in upstate New York, which is basically North Carolina with snow in the winter and Democrats in the government.)

I sometimes pronounce words randomly depending on my mood.

pa-KHAN for me. Half the time I can't pronounce any words correctly and end up substituting one consonant for another or becoming Australian.

Quick question: how would I go about unsubscribing from this thread? As entertaining as it may be debate the proper pronunciation of "pecan", I believe that I've already put in my two cents' worth of input here. I've already deleted this thread from my "notifications and email" settings, but it still constantly appears when I check the "show new replies to your posts" button.
Any suggestions? My apologies for steering the discussion into a slight tangent, but getting constant reminders to check a thread I'm no longer subscribed to becomes a nuisance after a week or two.

I spell it color now but I used to spell it colour. I kept getting marks on my papers, though, and eventually figured it out. The same thing with my use of theatre instead of theater.
