Well, that came out of nowhere...
-
Well holy crap.
I don't think anyone saw it coming.
-
I like how they talk about the backwards compatibility like there was ever a chance Nintendo was abandoning something they've been condoning since 1998.
-
They did with the DSi.
-
I'm calling April Fools on this. The strange formatting of the letter, the enthusiasm of the reporter, the "too good to be true" aspect. Something about "fiscal year ending in March" made me think of April.
I'll wait until April 3 and see if this story's still floating around by then. If so... then that's cool. But I didn't think we were in the age of holograms yet. It just seems like it's going too fast for Nintendo. And you just know the first titles we'll see for that thing will be ports of the Virtual Boy games.
By the way, I wish GoNintendo would keep that Cave Story art up on their site forever.
I'm declaring this guy the "Be wary of April Fools" Pokemon:
(https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpokemon.neoseeker.com%2Fw%2Fi%2Fpokemon%2F8%2F85%2F200px-Farfetch%26%23039%3Bd.png&hash=4f1889295bd27234a0114a028e7bea96)
-
So the fact that the PDF in question is hosted by Nintendo doesn't mean anything?
-
You can do 3D without holograms. They just haven't been very good at it yet.
-
Sweetness. We've had these same darn systems for so long now I forgot how it felt to look forward to a new one.
-
I call April Fools, guys, sorry. Nintendo can host all the crazy news they want, I still don't think it's true.
-
We've had these same darn systems for so long now I forgot how it felt to look forward to a new one.
There were nine years between the Game Boy and Game Boy Color. Six between the DS and its follow-up isn't that bad by comparison.
-
Those of you crying April Fools: Check the site again. Nintendo themselves stated it will be showcased at E3.
Now lets see if they launch the system with a new Mario game or a 3D port of Super Mario Sunshine.
-

Though that raises the question....
Do we really need a new one now?
I know the system will be a day one buy for me but still...the DS has a lot of momentum left and if I was Nintendo, I'd wait a little more before moving to the next system.
-

That's what makes it such a good joke!

[T]he DS has a lot of momentum left and if I was Nintendo, I'd wait a little more before moving to the next system.
Considering what's still in development for the DS (fifth-gen Pokémon titles and Golden Sun, among other things) and that the new system will be backwards-compatible, I wouldn't be surprised if the DS keeps going the same way the PS2 has. Also remember that games that had Game Boy Color features but were still compatible with the original Game Boy continued to be developed for some time after the Game Boy Color's release.
-
No GBA compatability. FFFUUUUUUU--
As for the "3D" aspect, speculation (http://kotaku.com/5499712/is-this-how-3d-will-work-on-the-nintendo-3ds) runs (http://kotaku.com/5499823/nintendo-3ds-could-borrow-3d-trick-from-iphone) wild (http://kotaku.com/5500166/report-nintendo-3ds-also-has-3d-joystick-force-feedback--more). If they'll seriously be relying on Paper Mario-style 2.5-dimensional graphics for a pop-out effect (as demonstrated in the first link), I'll be filled with disappoint.
-
The DS will go HD and 3D before the Wii. This gives me mixed feelings.
-
They did with the DSi.
Ah right. I try to pretend that never existed.
And unlike my dislike of WarioWare, I DO have good reasons to dislike the DSi.
-
There were nine years between the Game Boy and Game Boy Color. Six between the DS and its follow-up isn't that bad by comparison.
GBC -> GBA three years
GBA -> DS three years
It's bad.
-
Which GBA: the original release or the GBASP?
I think it's too soon for another DS iteration (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2009/8/31/). DSlites, DSi's, and the upcoming DSXL are (or will, in case of XL) still selling pretty strongly, and they're still making good games for these systems (not just the puzzle game fillers that typically come near the end of a system's life).
I know the comic has nothing to do with the subject, but that word made me think of that comic..
-
GBC -> GBA three years
GBA -> DS three years
If anything, those systems' lifespans were shorter than usual (and the original Game Boy's lifespan far longer than the norm), since the system cycle is normally about five years. But I see what you're saying, especially since it'll have been close to seven years between systems by the time the 3DS actually comes out.
Also, GBA compatibility isn't that big a deal. Just play games on an Actual GBA. (This also applies to people who ***** and moan about not being able to play PS2 games on their PS3, though it's understandable there with such a small number of games worth playing on the PS3.)
And he means the original, obviously, Toad. The SP can be treated as you would the DS Lite.
And the 3DS hopefully won't just be another iteration of the DS. If even half the rumors are close to the truth, it'll be a completely new system that happens to also be compatible with DS games.

It would help if my GBA and PS2 (http://themushroomkingdom.net/board/index.php?topic=13046.0) still worked...
Also, have you considered that even with access to a GBA, you don't get the same backlighting and vibrant colors the DS Lite provides?
-
Assuming this is real, Nintendo really dropped the ball not including GBA capability. Yes, yes, I can always play on a GBA, but it's still nice to have.

-
Turtlekid, have you considered that you do with a newer SP (which you could pick up for about $20 at a used game store)? Or better yet, on the Game Boy Player (same as long as you didn't get rid of your GameCube)? (And PS2s are pretty cheap now too.)
Glorb, have you considered that including the GBA architecture in the system would make it physically larger and cost more to make?
-
How much more? Early models of the PS3 that could play PS2 and PS1 games actually included the chips for them (or at least the one for PS2).

Has anybody at all considered that there's generally not a separate lane for horses on the highway? I love the GBA, too, but we've all got to move on at some point.
Also, the 3D thing will definitely give them a leg up, but it sounds pretty crude, and it doesn't take much imagination to ponder the gimmicky crap we're going to have to suffer through before, if ever, it gets put to good use.
-
Heck, I'll take gimmicky 3D over a gimmicky touch screen any day. At least 3D isn't nearly as hard to use creatively.
...in theory, anyway.
-
I'd be inclined to say the same, if it didn't sound like the 3D is going to be that Paper Mario-esque "layers" tripe that's currently infiltrating every theater in the country. Heck, at least with the original DS, you could count on two dozen games about magical writing implements, but about all I can think of for faux-3D is a couple "hey, look, there's such a thing as spatial dimensions!" Super Paper Mario gimpers. That, and shoehorning excuses to have random crap fly at my face.
...Actually, in all seriousness, you know what series will be perfect for this thing? DQ-style RPGs.
-
How much more? Early models of the PS3 that could play PS2 and PS1 games actually included the chips for them (or at least the one for PS2).
Did you notice that when they took out PS2 backwards compatibility they also dropped the MSRP by two hundred bucks? (Also, PSX compatibility on the PS3 is via emulation.)
Regardless, the effect including GBA hardware in the new system would have on the system's size and/or shape would probably be greater than the effect it would have on the cost.
And Turtlekid, ShadowBrian, I'm guessing neither of you guys have played a lot of DS games that really use the touchscreen well. They're out there! And didn't really take that long to come out!
-
Um...I didn't even know there was anyone around who still called the touch screen on the DS "gimmicky". Oh well, I guess you learn something new every day.

-
PS1 on my PS3 is done through the Emotion Engine I believe (which also handles PS2), not emulation. It's probably emulation on PS3s now though.
-
I guess we're forgetting that GBA games are playable on the DS. It's still a nuisance to know that I'll have to lug two systems around in order to play SMB3/SMW/SMW2:YI/whatever else portably, though.
-
Weegee, why carry around a DS to play GBA games when the GBA (especially the micro, which can probably be had for pretty cheap now) is smaller?
-
Man, once I pretty much 100%'d all the GBA Mario games I stopped playing them. Come to think of it, the last time I played a GBA game not for work purposes was just to test how the Game Boy Player looked through component, and before then who knows? Moral: I don't even play GBA games anymore.
-

He wants to play both. A DS plus something else is not smaller than a DS.
-
That's not the issue here. A 3DS plus a DS wouldn't be smaller than a 3DS plus a GBA.
-

Nah, man. You'll be busy playing Super Mario Bros. 3 3D, Super Mario World 3D, and Yoshi's Island 3D.

-
Are you that OCD that you have to carry around games you've already played through dozens of times on a dated portable system that will be a decade old by the time this one comes out?
-
You're forgetting that some of us never moved beyond Tetris or (insert crazy fun puzzle game here).
I wouldn't mind a facelift of SNES Yoshi's Island using the graphics from Yoshi's Story. All the good gameplay and music of the SNES original with the eye-popping visuals of the N64 version. You know, like what we all thought "Yoshi's Island 64" was going to be. In 3D.
So you can... I don't know, tickle Yoshi's belly and have him giggle like the Pillsbury doughboy. I can imagine there'd be some people out there who'd want to actually do that. Glorb gets the "Tickle Freeman's Bod" version.
-

Super Mario World is my favourite Mario game, The Minish Cap is my favourite Zelda game, The Amazing Mirror is possibly my favourite Kirby game, and I've logged well over 700 hours into the GBA Pokemon games, more than any other generation. If I'm "OCD" for replaying my best-loved titles, you're ADHD for not.
-
penguinwizard, I would argue that Yoshi's Island was better looking than Yoshi's Story, and had a more appealing visual style throughout.
-

No, but if you care that much for those titles that you absolutely must play them every time you leave your house and would be willing to carry 2 separate systems around to juggle your video game taste, I'd say you're definitely some sort of weirdo.
-
No one here is arguing that Weegee isn't weird. But he is justifiably so in this case.
-
I don't even consider replay value when I buy games nowadays. If I really want to play through a game again (and it isn't sixty hours long) I will, but whether or not it would be worth doing so doesn't factor at all into my initial purchase.
Given the supposed power of the new system, I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo starts offering a Virtual Handheld service this time around. Of course, people would complain that they couldn't play their two-generation-old games without paying for them again, because the GBA is almost certainly fresher in people's minds than the N64 was when the VC went online. In fact, they already are complaining about it.
-

I agree with this, but I also don't think YS was a terrible game. It just wasn't as good as YI.
-
I never said YSt was bad or that I didn't like it.
-
I know. I guess I was just ready for someone to debate about that (not neccesarily you).
Back to the DS: I don't know about this 3DS business. It sounds kinda like another Virtual Boy. Of course, I'll reserve judgement until I've actually seen/played it myself. I just hope they make some new games, not ports of ports (Super Mario Bros 3D! Super Mario Advance 3D! Super Mario 64 DS 3D! Fish Tycoon 3D!)
-
The Virtual Boy was cool too. What is the deal with people
-
We're all mushrooms. :p
I thought the VB was cool too, back when it was first out. Sadly, I never owned one, and the one time I got to play, I only got to play Mario Tennis (about ten minutes was all I could take: the game was fun, but my head started hurting).
This makes me think: why hasn't Nintendo put any VB games on the VC? WarioWare (the first game) proved that they can recreate the VB games in better resolution (Mario Clash was one of 9 Volt's microgames).
What is the deal with Chupperson? XD
-
Maybe the Virtual Boy would have been better if 1. it used some color other than red, 2. there was a comfortable way to play it, 3. more games used the 3D aspect for a good reason, 4. Red Alarm wasn't essentially Sector Y of Star Fox SNES so that you'd have a clue where to go, 5. more games like Wario Land.
-
It's funny. I own many portables, but I never bought them for the on-the-go factor.
-
All you people who get headaches simply don't know how to set up a Virtual Boy properly.

Do a 3D version of the Zoolander Shigeru Miyamoto GIF and I'll be happy.

The photo does look 3D without glasses, I'll give it that much.

Do you think the 3DS will stick with cartridges, or be Nintendo's first portable system to use discs?
-
You really just wanted an excuse to use that gif, didn't you?
-
Well, he was banned from showing his fine physique on eHarmony, so he had to post his picture somewhere.
Anyway, I dunno. It kinda looks like they may still use carts. But with the graphics quality, it may be discs. Who knows with Nintendo.

The specs were released last week, and the medium has been shown to be cards again. And the minimum size is going to be two gigabytes, bigger than the set-in-stone 1.8GB of a UMD.
-
Two gigs minimum?
Holy
-
two gigabytes
Which means...?
-
Again, that's more than the UMD, the format the PSP uses. It's also larger than a GameCube disc.
-
[darn].
Hey, I forgot I started this thread...

A little tab on the side to keep you from putting it in a regular DS. Another throwback to the Game Boy Color, along with the infrared port.
If I'm reading the specs right, though, 2 GB is, like, the minimum maximum -- i.e., at launch, cards can be up to 2 GB, and later on they'll start making bigger ones.
-
Ah, yes, rereading it, that does seem to be the case ("2GB max at launch").
Personally, I think having two gigabytes as the absolute minimum card size would have been better; as seen with DS games, developers don't have to use all of that space, and untrimmed ROMs for every single game being a minimum of two gigabytes would put a damper on piracy (if not due to pirates having to download the ROMs, then due to not having space on a microSD card for a lot of them). I don't know if the larger cards are more expensive to manufacture or anything like that, though.
-
I want Game & Watch Gallery 5 on 3DS. I'm picturing a virtual bookshelf of Game & Watch units, at least 20-25 or so games featured, and when you pick one, it flies at you in 3D until its screen fills the screen. Then once you're actually playing, the Classic mode uses the 3D effects to subtly simulate the different layers in the screen (overlays, backgrounds, and sprites), and the Modern mode can go crazy with it. And the last game you unlock is the Crystal Screen version of Super Mario Bros., using the outside cameras to simulate the see-through screen (like this (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/gouki16/Climber.jpg)). That would be amazing.
-
CrossEyed you're a genius.
....sadly now that you mentioned that it'll probably never happen. T.T

Well, that looks rather impressive to be sure. I wish that certain games intended for the 3DS would also be playable on the regular DS similar to how you could play some games intended for the Game Boy Color on the regular Game Boy. The tab of course would be absent and the games would be downgraded a little bit but not much.
-
I want a Metroid II: Return of Samus remake on the 3DS. I'm picturing full color and actual 3D models instead of sprites (although still on a 2D plane). The Metroids' fighting styles would be adapted according to newer games (for example, the Omegas wouldn't be able to fly anymore), and newer power-ups like the Speed Booster and Gravity Suit would be implemented, along with maybe some all-new ones. And maybe as a bonus, the original Return of Samus would be included as well. Basically the Zero Mission treatment that was given to the NES Metroid. And I know AM2R is ongoing and looks awesome, but still. It'd be nice to see Nintendo acknowledge RoS beyond adding a seriously-nerfed Spider Ball in the Prime games.

Its as big as a console.

I found a picture where the sign's next to a DS cart for comparison.

Sloppy spelling mistakes like those ruin even good jokes.
-
There needs to be some sort of rule about how funny something from 4chan is before one is allowed to post it.
-
You can turn the 3D off though. How would you not be able to see it right then?
-
People were inquiring about that? Do they not understand the mechanics of binocular vision? People with one eye can't even see RL in 3D - how the HECK is the 3DS supposed to accomplish it.
-
The 3DS is going to have "automatic" firmware updates. Bwahahaha.
-
Sounds downright evil.
-
Hence the "Bwahahaha."
-
yes thanks i couldnt tell until you pointed that out
-
I'm here to help.
-
Three to five hours? (http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=146792) Five to eight for DS games? Three hours to charge?
I'm assuming that's at the highest brightness setting, considering the DSi (whose battery is apparently a bit more than half the capacity of the 3DS's) gets more DS game battery life than that on medium brightness.
-
That's also due to Wi-Fi always being on when playing 3DS games.
Regardless, it's still loads better than the PSP2, which (judging from reports on its specs) should have an operating battery life of about twenty minutes.
-
Eh. That's not that bad. And yeah, if it's anything like the DS/Lite, Wi-Fi is a huge battery sapper. It'd be nice if it were possible to turn the connection on and off.
-
What, you can't turn off Wi-Fi? Gimme a break... it's not just the battery life, it's the potential health issues.
-
potential health issues
I wonder if ShadowBrian complains about the potential health issues of moving vehicles or loaded guns.
Probably not, since they aren't developed by Nintendo.
At any rate, the system's not even out yet, so we don't know if you can't turn off wireless, just that they've said it's always on by default.
On the other hand, it's going to have automatic firmware updates, so who knows? Would defeat the purpose if you could just disable wireless and never have to see those. Unless it could only be disabled in-game and was forced to be on while you're at the system menu or in built-in apps...
-
I wonder if ShadowBrian complains about the potential health issues of moving vehicles or loaded guns.
I might, if there was a venue for doing so. Besides, I'm tentative about excess exposure to pretty any kind of signal--that's half the reason I don't want a cellphone.
-
(https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm5.static.flickr.com%2F4069%2F4705635383_feecec1558.jpg&hash=082c78db24a9b6b3bb6374f9d98ff341)
Not only is it turn-offable just like on the Lite and DSi; it can now be turned off without even going through a menu.
I'm pretty sure they legally have to have a way to turn wireless off since it can screw with pacemakers and airplanes and stuff.
-
It's a switch now? Good deal.
Since firmware updates will almost certainly be included on new game cards and require installation to allow those games to run, I wonder if by "automatic" they mean it'll force the firmware update instead of letting you opt out (at the cost of not being able to play the game) like Sony's systems do.
-
potential health issues.
Don't joke about that; my great-uncle turned into a mutant by standing too close to a microwave once.
As for the 3DS's battery life, it shouldn't pose a problem for me. I haven't unplugged my DS from the charger since October or November.
-
3DS is region-locked. Ugh.
-
Well, assuming updates aren't forced, you might be able to fix that when the inevitable homebrew community develops.
-
- March 27th (in America), $249. Blue and black; no red.
- One friend code per 3DS. No game-specific friend codes. Connect through local wireless with another 3DS and their friend code is automatically registered.
- 30 games in launch window.
- Take photos in Pilotwings Resort (presumably 3D)
- Augmented reality in Nintendogs + Cats (watch your puppies and kittens walking around on your real-life dining table or whatever)
- Quasi-multitasking -- press Home button during a game, go to the menu, do other stuff, and then go right back to the game.
- A screenshot of the camera software looks like you can add 3D bulges to photos in the album.
- Activity Log -- keep track of how much you play each game, and how much you walk. Walking earns Play Coins that can be used to unlock stuff in games.
- Virtual Console / *Ware replaced with eShop system -- merging of Shop Channel and Nintendo Channel, plus demos; cash-based rather than points-based. Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and 3DSWare at or near launch (3DS website says that a system update may be required).
- (https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nintendo.com%2Fimages%2F3ds%2Fsoftware%2Fbuilt-in_0010_Internet-Browser.jpg&hash=34cbcf539e1b1047611e6a6d8058ec0e)
- Music player (3DS Sound) about the same as on DSi, except in 3D, with some form of StreetPass (tag mode/local wireless) functionality, and compatible with MP3s (not just AACs).
- No new information yet about 3D videos in America.
- 2GB SD card included; supports SDHC, so can go up to 64GB.
- Transfer downloaded games from DSi to 3DS (*There is a limit to how many times transfers can be made. Some software may not be transferred. More Information Coming Soon). Hopefully also from 3DS to 3DS, because I want a red one.
-
- One friend code for every game. Connect through local wireless with another 3DS and you won't even have to register their friend code.
I know nobody would really know yet, but does this mean you have just one fc, or one fc per game (ie: I need a different fc for Mario Kart than I would need for Animal Crossing)?
-
It means you have one friend code. End of story.
-
That's great news! It looks like Nintendo is finally catching on!
-
Indeed! That is exciting!
-
That release is a lot earlier than I expected. Hope I'll have enough cash to get one.
-
$250 for a portable system? That's a paddlin', Nintendo.
-
Compare to Sony's new handheld.
-
$250 for a portable system? That's a paddlin', Nintendo.
It's one of the first mass-consumer products to use 3D technology without required glasses. I believe it's worth the $250.
-
Not bad. Would've preferred a custom username instead of a generated digit code, but this is still a step up from the Wii and DS' online structure.
The launch line-up isn't very impressive, but the number of early fighting games and RPGs is very promising. I wish we could at least have a Mario Sunshine port at launch or something.
Activity Log seems like an attempt to make the system a part of your daily routine. I think it'll work for me since free coins to unlock stuff sounds like a good deal.
-
- Activity Log -- keep track of how much you play each game, and how much you walk. Walking earns Play Coins that can be used to unlock stuff in games.
My DS never leaves the house unless we're going on vacation, so here's hoping Action Replay can once again trump Nintendo's software. It's better than Club Nintendo Coins, at least.
It appears that the lack of Mario games available at the Wii's release wasn't just a one-time fluke: Mario launch titles have become a thing of the past. :(
-
Are you honestly that lazy that you would rather shark for points than just carry the thing with you on the way to the library or something?
-
>library
Oh Wiggles, you so crazy. The only viable option would be to carry it around at school, which I wouldn't be comfortable doing.
-
Might just be my situation, but I don't have a car so I usually walk or take a bus to places I need to get to most of the time. Something like this seems perfect for me since I spend much of my idle time on my DS.
-
Finally, the ability to add 3D bulges to my photos.
-
While you're doing that, we can see a 3D image of you drinking your urine?
-
Finally, the ability to add 3D bulges to my photos.
That's what she said.
Bonus ending: *Bow chicka bow bow*
-
Cute (http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/10/nintendo-can-remotely-brick-your-3ds-after-flash-card-use/).
-
So, theoretically, you could insert a flash card into any 3DS of anyone you find and get Nintendo to brick it remotely?
I miss the days where you could buy something and actually have ownership of it.
-
Flash cards don't work that way and Nintendo can't (and doesn't) legally brick things on purpose.
There's nothing current piracy devices do that touches anything in the system software; you can't access the kernel at all from SLOT-1 on a DS or DSi, and it's probably the same on the 3DS.
If that's not the case, it won't be long before someone makes custom firmware or something like the Homebrew Channel, at which point thousands of users will void their warranty by installing the unauthorized software, void their bowels when their systems stop working come update time, and whine like three-year-olds on the Internet when Nintendo doesn't replace their bricked 3DSes.
You know, exactly like what happened with the Wii.
-
I'm getting the 3DS day 1. I'm most excited about the built-in Augmented Reality games, as they seem to be an innovative and fun use of AR technology.
-
ARRRRRRRRR technology?
-
No, that was the original DS.
-
That monitor is pathetically small.
-
Speaking of pathetic things, behold the 3DS launch title lineup (http://www.crunchgear.com/2011/02/22/here-are-the-north-american-3ds-launch-titles/). Note the dearth of interesting first-party releases.
-
Riiiiiidge Racer
I take it as a bit of a good thing that the games we want to see most aren't launch titles--yeah, you have to wait, but it's better than rushing them
With DLC and patches and all that crap it seems like no one but Nintendo actually finishes their games before they release them anymore
-
Furthermore, why do you care about launch titles? Why are you buying a 3DS before the first hardware revision (featuring sweeping improvements and a reduction in size) hits stores? Haven't you people learned anything from this console generation (PS3 notwithstanding)?
-
To the first DS model's credit, it didn't have as many widespread problems as the Lite seemed to--broken shoulder buttons and hinges...
-
It's still pretty sad that the 3DS is the second Nintendo console ever to not even slightly have a Mario game at launch (the first being the Pokemon mini, so yeah). Even the Wii at least had some Mario games on the Virtual Console at launch (and it also had a brand-new Zelda game).
Nintendo clearly wasn't planning on putting this out before November 2011, before it leaked and shareholders got ****y about slightly lower sales figures.
-
My Lite never gave me any trouble in the years I had it. I even dropped it on a tile floor once and the worst it got was a crack in the outer casing.
-
It's a matter of tradition: A Nintendo console without a Mario launch title is like an AC/DC album devoid of any sexually-suggestive song names.
-
Well, after seeing the launch title list, I feel much less obligated to get the 3DS as close to release as possible. I'm still interested as to how that Paper Mario'll pan out, probably more so than I am about "Super Mario 3DS", but I guess I'll have to wait a while to find out anyway.
-
Is there a way to play our games while the 3DS charges? If not, that's kind of a disappointing step backwards. Because whenever I'm practically glued to a game on my DS, and the light turns red, I can just plug it in and continue to play.
Looking at my monetary situation, the 3DS' launch titles, and its battery life, I think I'll wait for the next model.
-
Pretty sure the 3DS comes with a charging cable as well as a cradle. That'd be how they let people play it at all of the demos.
-
The charging cable can be plugged into the cradle or into the 3DS directly.
-
I held my 3DS today. I stroked it, nuzzled it, and kissed its box. I talked to it so it would learn the sound of my voice, like a baby in the womb. I played it some classical music to help its development.
-
- The analog stick/circle thing is neat, and it even seems to work in DS titles (with limited success, mind you).
- The D-Pad and shoulder buttons aren't as good as the DS Lite's. The former is all clicky and weird, while the latter are much smaller and less responsive.
- They moved the Start and Select buttons again. But then they put the Power Button there instead. I'm going to turn off my system in the middle of a game at some point, and then I'll be miffed.
- The 3D is, unfortunately, noticeably hard on the eyes, even after a few seconds. Unless it's required to play a game, I'm not sure how much I'll be using it.
-
The stylus placement is abysmal.
Everything else is good.
-
Ah, yeah, stylus. Kinda sucks for right-handed people.
Good thing I was born with fingers.
-

Your casual is showing. Any truly HARDCORE gamer would have honed their senses by immersing themself in 3D media prior to the launch of the 3DS.
-
anyone got $250 lyin' around
-
So, uh, is there any advantage to using the Cradle to charge the system as opposed to just directly plugging it in? Because it seems like it's a disadvantage since you can't actually use the system if it's in the Cradle.
-
With the cradle, people like LD can gently rock their 3DS to sleep every night.
-
Man. 3D is cool but I start experiencing motion sickness after too long.
-
Really liking how everything works so far, but I guess a good bulk of features won't be available until May with the new update. I was very surprised to find an OKGO music video in my last system update...
The 3D was kinda hard to get used to at first, but I'm pretty well-adjusted to it by now. My brother and I have been having a lot fun "interacting" with the character AR cards.
-
Wow, yeah, the d-pad and buttons feel like the original DS.
CLICKY BUTTONS ARE BACK, BABY!
-
ProTip: Hold down START or SELECT while tapping the menu icon to display a DS game at its original screen size ratio.
-
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/03/cradled-by-inadequacy-the-3ds-battery-put-to-the-test.ars
I wouldn't be affected by this much, considering I'm used to playing a game system with about the same amount of battery life (and used to laptops with worse), but too bad for people who were expecting to be able to play the system for several hours straight without it being plugged in. (I don't know who these people are, but still.)
-
Even if it is 3D, 3DS just barely having the same battery life as Game Gear in the best case scenario is just nuckin' futs.
-
Well, my brother just got his. Here's to saving $250 by having a sibling!
-
Same here, for now.
I want to at least wait to get my own until they're in red, preferably after a price drop (which won't happen), and I really should wait until I have a better-paying job. Hopefully I have the self-control to wait until at least one of those conditions is fulfilled.
-
I'll buy it when worthwhile games start coming out.
-
I tried it at Best Buy today and couldn't see the 3D very well. Still, I'll probably get it when: I have an income, the second generation comes out, and/or Paper Mario 3D, Ocarina, etc. is released
-
For those of you who have a 3DS, I have a couple of questions about Nintendo 3DS Sound:
1. Can you arrange your songs into playlists?
2. Is there a 'random song' option?
-
I didn't realize it could even play songs.
Although I haven't messed around with it much. Just recorded a fraction of a second of audio to see how it worked. I'm not sure.
-
The 3D looked pretty good when I tried it at Best Buy. I'm just gonna ask it for my birthday since it's about a few months away. I'd kind of like to get it sooner to do some trading between my Soul Silver and Platinum, but this will save me money in the long run. Heck, it's not like any of the games I want have a confirmed release date yet.
-
It needs to be "late May" already.
-
Replacing the battery screws up StreetPass, probably permanently. (http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=155653)
Yeah, I'm definitely waiting for the revision now. And don't say they're not doing one. I don't care what they said in Iwata Asks, they wouldn't have put the stylus where they did if they weren't already planning on a revision.
-
They can't make anything these days without having a revision planned.
Part of the reason I didn't jump all over getting a 3DS.
-
You know, Nintendo's had a good track record with technical issues until now.
-
Eh. The DS line has its share of minor problems. Cracked hinges, dead pixels, L and R going on strike...
The Wii's all good though. Mine's quit reading discs a few times but that was my own [darn] fault for leaving it on all the time. I've... learned my lesson about that.
But will it work perfectly in 2026? Bet my SNES still will
-
I don't have one yet, for a variety of reasons well-covered by the majority of the internet, but I still have to ask... what the heck's up with no web browser at launch?
-
My DS phat is 6 years old, but it's still in pretty good condition. No dead pixels, shoulder buttons work, no cracks. The touch screen is a little scratched from use, but not terribly.
-
Played the 3DS for the first time yesterday, at a shopping centre demo. Nintendogs was neat, and I liked the AR cards, but I found I felt a bit sick after only a couple of minutes of play (headache, eye strain, nausea). I'm just wondering if this is a common reaction, even after such a short playtime? (the 3D was all of the way up, but even still...)
-
It only happens the first couple of times that you use the 3D. After that, if you're like me, you won't notice any nasty side-effects.
-
All this talk of gaming-induced nausea is beginning to remind me something...
(https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexgentech.org%2Fwp-content%2Fplugins%2Fwp-o-matic%2Fcache%2F118b0_virtual-boy-2011-03-21-600-35.jpg&hash=dfba193381a93da7b3186e1e5cbeb7b4)
-
I've found that after playing in 3d for only a few hours, my eyes became accustomed to the 3D, and ever since then I've been able to see the 3D as naturally as the 2D.
-
Same here; after only a bit of it seeming weird, the 3D screen now seems totally natural. I have even kind of started to "think" in 3D, if that makes sense. Like when I picture doing something in the game in my head.
-
The update that uncripples the online stuff will be here June 6th, apparently. Thoughts?
If Metroid II is one of the offered titles, I'd like to pick that up.
-
The same week as E3. COINCIDENCE?
It's probably just going to be Super Mario Land... which I will buy.
-
Actually, Link's Awakening is supposed to be one of the first titles available. Thinking of getting that, too...
But it all depends on how much they're going to wanna charge for the games.
-
I am beginning to think about getting one of these, since i will have money soon and I need to replace my slowly falling apart DS lite.
-
My DS's touch screen is progressively going to [dukar], but spending nearly $300 to replace it with a system that has no games would feel like a waste.
3DS: the next Virtual Boy? (http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en&tab=ww#hl=en&sugexp=lcms&xhr=t&q=3ds+sales&cp=6&pf=p&sclient=psy&safe=off&site=webhp&source=hp&aq=0&aqi=&aql=f&oq=3ds+sa&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=29ee382ee74c5d2c&biw=1366&bih=667)
-
So it's not selling well eh? Well maybe it's because of the steep price tag, or that there are very fame games worthwhile out yet?
-
It's the latter, definitely. The Wii was the same price, but it had Zelda
-
That's what you get for not having a Mario launch title, Nintendo!
-
I honestly think they should've launched it with a game from one of their popular franchises, or any popular franchise for the matter. Even a new Castlevania or Ninja Gaiden would've tempted me to get it on launch. They should've just pushed the launch back and released it with Ocarina of Time 3D.
-
Yes, BP, but a $250 price tag was pretty reasonable for a home console. A handheld? Eh, while it's not ridiculously high, it's a little more than what some people with tighter budgets might willing to pay.
So some gamers, it's a combination of price tag and lack of worthwhile launch titles.
In my case, I don't have much money, and the only game I know of that I'm looking forward to is Paper Mario. Until that comes out, the only purpose that a 3DS would serve for me is some Pokemon trading.
-
Since the update, it seems like sometimes the charging light will get stuck on and not turn off when the system's done charging. Anyone else seeing this?
-
I've read about it happening fairly commonly.
-
lol3DS.
-
No big, it'll prob be fixed in the RR3D-fixing update.
-
Because of the length of time you have to hold down the Power button to turn the 3DS off and the fact that it goes to that Sleep Mode explanation screen before actually powering down, every time I shut off my 3DS it feels like I'm strangling something to death with my bare hands.
-
You should shake it while saying, "Why you little!"

Wal-mart selling 3DS for $170 a day early.
Get into Ambassador Club despite only paying $170.
Deal with it.

The original MS Paint version of that comic is better.

So far my mind is blown by the AR Card games. But I'm not sure, does the 3DS have any games?
-
Nope. Not really.

If you meant any NEW games than I don't think so. I'm still holding off on purchasing one until Paper Mario, Super Mario 3D Land, and/or Luigi's Mansion 2.
-
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Shadow Wars is PIMP.
-
When I came back and looked at my post again I realized it might have looked like I was being facetious. I was not.
-
Update your systems now! New features include 3D video recording, stop motion video-making, a ton of new Streetpass stuff, and a new app called Nintendo Zone.
What do you guys think of it? The camera shutter noise gets really annoying when trying to make a stop motion video, but besides that the new features are quite awesome.
-
Seeing as the AC adapter can be plugged directly into the 3DS, what's the point of using the charging cradle?
-
Small convenience only. I do legitimately appreciate it though. When on the verge of sleep, merely placing the 3DS down onto the cradle next to my bed is much nicer than searching for the right cord (among the DS and PSP cords in the same spot) and concentrating enough to plug it in.
Is there a reason you haven't posted your friend code? I'd friend you.
-
No multiplayer games yet.
-
When the 3DS updates Nintendo Video does it delete the previous four videos? Is it possible to get them back or to otherwise download and watch them in 3D on the 3DS? I'd like to be able to show some of the old ones to my friend and family when I see them over the holidays.
Also, I think this would be cool in 3D on the 3DS's Nintendo Video channel:

-
If you are a 3DS Ambassador (bought it before the price drop), go download your 10 free GBA games now!
-
Good stuff. Unfortunately my brother brought the 3DS to his finals today and hasn't come home yet...
I really wish they'd actually go through with adding GBA games as a regular Virtual Console release. It also kinda bums me out that they're not utilizing its full potential like multiplayer. Granted, it would a more likely to happen if the GBA games weren't an Ambassador Program exclusive.

I bought my 3DS on July 27th, 2012. There have been about 576 hours since then.
Of those 576 hours,
about 144 were spent sleeping
about 102 were spent at work
about 22 were spent driving to and from work
for a total of 268 non-discretionary hours, leaving 308 discretionary hours.
According to my Activity Log, I have used my 3DS for a total of about 97 hours to date.
This accounts for approximately 31.5% of all discretionary hours since purchase (though this does include considerable amounts of multitasking, as well as the ~2.5 hours to transfer my DSiWare games and photos).
Nearly one-tenth of that time was spent playing Mario's Picross, which I just bought two days ago.
(Despite the biological imperative, I do not count eating as non-discretionary hours, as it would be possible to watch Netflix on my 3DS while eating.)
-
I'm proud to say that I've never used StreetPass, SpotPass, SwapNote, or any other silliness of the sort.
>inb4 LD calls me a Neo-Luddite
-
My Activity Log wouldn't be accurate anyway. I'm almost ashamed to admit, but I've been changing the date a couple of times to get more Play Coins so I can finish the Find Mii quests.
I'm near the end of the second quest for the first time, but there are still multiple paths I can take..
