Title: Super Mario Galaxy
Post by: SolidShroom on November 13, 2007, 04:04:49 PM
Most people have got it today, and while there are a few that are really into it, I think a majority of us are just beginning the game. So, I'd like to know what everyone thinks. I think that for once, a Wii game has given me a great first impression. The camera angles aren't half bad, the cinematics are decent--so far--and the control scheme, like 64, is as smooth as butter. While this may be a strange belief, Galaxy kind of feels like a Ratchet and Clank game.

It sorta does. Anyway, I was wowed by the graphics, and it is most certainly not a Mario 64 clone. I like Mario's new move: the crouch walk, where he ducks and wobbles around while crouching. I also enjoy the new star spin!

The camera seemed like it was on rails at first, but I haven't found it to be too bothersome so far.

regarding the voices, Bowser sounded like Jabba the Hut, and Peach seemed to have a slight british accent. Not that I'm complaing mind you. Jabba the Hut > cookie monster.

Post by: Metric on November 13, 2007, 08:29:14 PM
Yeah, they failed on the voices again in my opinion. Also, I think the Camera is a bit off, and Mario's side somersault is differnt than in the other games and makes it hard to do. Those are my only complaints.
On the other hand, this is the most beautiful video game I've ever seen. It's awesome to be doing long jump again and I LOVE messing with the gravity on small planets by long jumping off edges. I've only gotten two power-ups so far though, I can't wait to get a fire flower.

Oh yeah, one more complaint; When you reset, you're lives reset. I find that a bit frustrating.

It reminds me of NiGHTS for some reason. I still want Mario Galaxy -_- Is it worth running out and buying it?

I won Twilight Princess of ebay Monday the 5th 27 dollars, Won the Nintendo Wii Wednesday the 7th for 240 dollars, won Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Sunday the 10th 41 dollars, Won Super Mario Galaxy Monday the 12th of November.  Have yet to play the Wii.  So I will likely have to try Wii sports before I can take on Galaxy.  I won't see it until thanksgiving since I shipped it to my parents.  I have exams going on so will only be able to play it Thanksgiving break then I have to go back to take exams and won't go home until December 12th.

However, once December comes I will be a happy man.  Wish I could try it out now.

Probably shouldn't get on this board very much until I play Galaxy... too many spoilers.

I have 50 something stars so far. My favorite galaxy as of now would have to be Dusty Dunes. I liked Dusty Dunes.

I have 28 stars.  My favorite galaxy is the Honeybee Galaxy.  I love using that sweet, sweet bee suit.

P.S. First post!  May I cherish it forever.

I got it 2 days ago. I'm on the Dusty Dune Galaxy with 32 stars. I just miss belly-sliding (when you want to)...

Honeyhive Galaxy = PWN

I played Dusty Dunes today.  It's lame.  All you do is travel around some quicksand.

Has anyone noticed that a few of the galaxy's seem to be based off recent movies?
I got just a bit suspicious when I went into the Honeyhive Galaxy. I mean what with the recent Bee Movie and all. Just a bit though.
Then I went to the Loopdelopp Galaxy, and I'm like "Ok, hold it!". Surfing penguins. In the tropics. Needless to say, I saw the resemblance in that movie Zurfs Up.
I liked the Beach Bowl Galaxy though. The swimming system is great. Heck, I liked all the galaxy's, but I thought Mario runs a bit too slow.

When I was playing through Honey Hive galaxy my brothers wouldn't stop making puns.

"I'll bee there."

"When will it bee my turn?"

And so on.  Coincidently,  the day I got galaxy was the day I saw Bee Movie.  And I don't think Nintendo is ripping off of animated movies.  Those ideas just seemed very innovative to them and they decided to go with it.ß

Got 86 stars :O wewt!(got a lot of free time.)  MY favorite galaxy is the Freezeflame galaxy, but my favorite boss is Bouldergeist.

GOOD: Great graphics, cool powerups, innovative locales
BAD: Camera, stage layouts are too linear
Title: Re: Super Mario Galaxy
Post by: BP on November 16, 2007, 12:00:29 AM
ALSO GOOD: Many many levels, with fewer stars (the inverse leads to boredom). Bowser Jr.'s voice is much less annoying.
Beat it. I only got the minimum amount of stars though (61). Now there'll be something fun for me to do when I feel like playing it some more.

I just hate the fact that Bowser Jr. is in the game.  Give us the Koopalings!

I would've loved seeing Tatanga or some Shroobs.
And, yes, I wish they'd bring the Koopalings back.

The remixed soundtracks in this game are godly.

I also loved the Pikmin reference in the Space Junk Galaxy.

Post by: BP on November 16, 2007, 08:22:28 PM
Bringing back the Koopalings means the Koopalings as bosses and thusly means zero boss variety.
C'mon, Bowser Jr.'s voice is even less annoying this time.

I'm definitely enjoying the fact that Bowser and friends don't speak this time around.

^ Actually, with all the flak Nintendo takes for not having voice acting in their games, I saw the lack thereof in SMG somewhat of a step back...

Oh, and Mario doesn't run very fast in this game.

Ugh. I'm on those annoyingly hard Green Star levels (after your collect all 3 Green Power Stars)

35 stars left until I get Luigi!
Title: Re: Super Mario Galaxy

Ah, beat it earlier today... minimum amount of stars, of course (ten less than SM64... *sigh*). Onto the next 60!

If you come back later they show up again, I think. Randomly.

Talk to the weird purple-looking star at the Comet Observatory (he is to the left of the dark brown Luma) and tell him "Move It!".

I don't think you need to.  I'm pretty sure the comets will just appear and reappear at random.

I have 86 stars so far and I think this game is awsome. Ive found some refrences from other nintendo game's on galaxy which is cool.

1. Theres a pokeball shaped plant on one of the 1 star galaxys

2. Theres captain Olimar's space ship in the space junk galaxy.

3. One of Kirby's enemys the are in this game thier the spinning top guys that are in some of the levels.

One more thing. Did anyone notice that the maple leaf galaxy is axtualy the honey bee galaxy backwards?

1. I think I remember that... care to elaborate?
2. Oh, THAT'S what... whoever it was meant when they said there was a Pikmin reference... now where is it?
3. Um...... sure. I guess...
And in regards to the Gold Leaf Galaxy, yes, I did notice that sad rip-off. At first, I thought THAT was the Pikmin reference--stealing old levels and slightly changing them.

It's an old practice in Mario games. Super Mario Bros. did it.
Title: Re: Super Mario Galaxy
Post by: ShadowBrain on November 20, 2007, 10:41:38 PM
When? They sure haven't done it recently...
Title: Re: Super Mario Galaxy
Post by: BP on November 21, 2007, 02:23:11 AM
I worded that wrong. It's an old practice, and it has been used in Mario game(s ?). Like Super Mario Bros. It's like an RPG enemy's palette swap--not very different from the easier one, but not as easy.
It's hardly any different from having 8 stars in the Honeyhive Galaxy alone, isn't it--and Sunshine used to do that. Therefore, you love the Golden Leaf Galaxy.

Don't waste your money on the Prima guide.  It's just a glorified walk through.  I only thumbed through it twice, but didn't see any detailed list of enemies with pictures, nor was there a list of max coins per galaxy, or anything else of value to me.  I wanted more details about the game, not a step-by-step walk through with tiny pictures.  I wish I'd kept my twenty bucks.

Well, like there's a whole lot to talk about... start here, follow this path, get the star, repeat and beat in a week.

I beat the whole thing only using the YouTube playthrough videos about 3 times.
Title: Re: Super Mario Galaxy

Come now, SB. If I had amnesia and forgot all the star locations in SM64 (but still knew how to play, had experience) I'm sure I could beat it in three days. It took me three days to beat Galaxy.

You know, I realized a little while ago what the problem is... Twilight Princess. That game was so in-freakin'-credible, I can't help but compare all other games to it, even when I know that was a once-in-a-lifetime, too-good-for-it's-own-good game.

Random comment. To tell everyone the truth when I first saw the maple leaf galaxy I thought that they brought back raccon Mario. That would have been somthin wouldent it?

Oh yes and one more thing. Do you think that Yoshi was going to be in the game originaly? I think he was becuase they have his head model in the game. But it dosent mean he was ment to be in the game.

And why is TP a problem to you!? Can you just not face the facts that it's a great game? Or do you just plain hate Ledgen of Zelda games?
Title: Re: Super Mario Galaxy

Twilight Princess wasn't even as great as OoT. I think you're just out of reasons to complain about SMG.

That doesn't even make sense because there are very few games in the Zelda style at all. And those are really the only ones that can be "compared" to it.

Maybe Luigi's just indecisive or wants to try for as many women as possible.

And if the spin-offs can be taken as seriously as you just have then Yoshi is most definitely asexual and can reproduce with just a bit of food.

I bet Yoshis just mate 1000 times each year and can turn food into embryos.

Yoshi doesn't lay eggs containing children, just... random stuff.
